Interesting overview but not a good reference book. Aimed primarily at product designers, it has a fair assortment of short articles by different artists. The short article on sketch books, using and making your own was excellent.
The target audience for this book appears to be folks who enjoyed art classes in school but grew up to be middle managers in marketing departments. I personally found it a bit disappointing. The approach depends heavily on industrial design principles and methods, things that first established the “hate” part of my love-hate relationship with drawing way back in middle school. And worse, the text is written in buzzword-intensive, academic prose, reminding me of how my awkward relationship continued into college. Though the authors are clearly talented artists, their descriptions are often vague and demonstrations frequently hard to match with concepts. Counter-examples would also have been helpful. Also the binding in the hardback edition comes loose from the pages, so if that sort of thing bothers you then consider the digital version.
A lush volume, very attractively made. But alas, while it sets out for a variety of learning goals, this book enables the reader in none one of them. In their ardor to underline every useful aspect of sketching the authors outline their own habits but never make them concrete or helpful in any way. Written like there was no editor involved. Also, what's with all the washing machines?
#UXbooks There is one chapter on web-design with examples and tips. I didn't find it useful. I would rather recommend reading Sketching User Experiences: The Workbook (but it's also not perfect)
It's got many projects to help you develop your skills in drafting and conveying thoughts visually. Do not undertake unless you can commit to a fair amount of practice as it relies on developing muscle-memory.
Picked this up at a bookstore in Seattle. I've been curious about graphic design and thought this book might explain a lot of concepts and techniques without overwhelming me. So far, so good.
