I rarely buy biographies but, for a variety of reasons, I found this on Amazon in a second hand hardback version and purchased it. I knew a little about Caspar John beforehand, but only the basics and I was expecting a somewhat dry, factual account of his life in the Navy.
But this is glorious. The detail is rich, the book is written with love and an immense amount of personal understanding and Caspar John comes across as a man devoted – not only to his work – but to his family. It's a lovely, lovely account and my only 'gripe' is that I wish it were longer.
And the book I bought is from the 'library' of someone with an unusual name - so much so that I looked him up on Google and discovered he was a submariner who became a Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy.
