Final Remains: Mystery at Ebey's Landing

Rate this book
When a human foot washes ashore at Ebey's Landing on Whidbey Island, it's the latest puzzling turn in an old mystery. Feet have been showing up on beaches all over Puget Sound and British Columbia for years. Whose feet are they, and how did they get here? Is a serial killer at work? Or did the victims die in a plane crash or capsized boat? For Sheriff's Deputy Katarina Brown, the search for answers takes her deep into the lives and stories of five missing women and the circumstances that put them in harm's way. What she learns forever changes the lives of those left behind.

I grew up in Western Washington and now make my home on Whidbey Island with my wife, Sue, and our adventurous canine, Duncan. We live in the woods with the deer, squirrels, owls, coyotes and other creatures that come and go when the spirit moves them.

After studying journalism at the University of Washington and receiving bachelor's and master's degrees, I became a reporter and editor for several newspapers in Washington and Idaho, including a large regional outdoor weekly. For most of my career I managed a magazine and other publications for a large insurance and financial services corporation.

But I saved the best for last. After giving up my good job in the city, I discovered how much fun writing could really be, starting with nature and rural life as my themes and, in time, evolving to writing mysteries, the most rewarding of all. What I love about mysteries is the platform they provide for my characters to stimulate reflection in the minds of readers.

My philosophy is my books should always entertain, but also give readers something more. Readers should come away having learned something new and been challenged to think about what they truly value in their lives.

Dan Pedersen’s 2020 mystery novel, Final Remains, was a pretty quick read.
Mostly this is because I’ve become accustom to his style and know many of his characters from previous books.
I can’t get over the feeling that Dan really enjoys his processes of
1. researching the context, facts, history, geography, etc.,
2. inventing new characters and/or resurrecting characters from previous editions of the Final series,
3. developing the rise and fall of the plot around these components,
4. closing the loops and tying off loose ends.

Dan’s writing is not sloppy or idiosyncratic. It is more like crisp non-fiction newspaper reporting...which is not surprising given his career in journalism.

Final Remains continues Dan’s mission to explore the seamier abysses of society from the safety of a policeman’s sterile diagnostic viewpoint. Society is sick and Detectives Kat Brown and Shane Lindstrom are going in to root out the malignancies, one novel at a time.

There is a secret story within the story as well and it is written specifically for the native Whidbey Island reader. It’s kind of like a “Where’s Waldo” story in which he describes a place or a business as part of the plot but he obfuscates the name and maybe plays around with the geography a bit. The savvy local reader knows where or what he is referring to and kind of marks it on their mental bingo card. I’ll never go into a certain coffee bar in a remote wooded part of south Whidbey again without looking around for Kat and Shane sipping cups of Happy Hippy drip and discussing a case. ;^)

Great read once again. Keep ‘em coming!
