Starfish and Coffee

Rate this book
On the island where they first met two lovers from opposite sides of the tracks are reunited. Now jaded and broken, Alex and Matt still can’t deny their sizzling connection or the memories of one perfect, uninhibited year together.

At twenty-two, Matt Tarrington is rich, good-looking and destined to be powerful, but behind that confident exterior lurks a man who resents the life his family thrust upon him. Desperate for an escape, Matt heads to Mirabella Island off the coast of Florida for a year of relaxation and some wild nights with vacationing party-girls.

Matt never expected to find real passion in the arms of Alex Hunter, a handsome, laid-back local.

Alex is gay, but closeted. Matt should be completely off limits, but Alex finds the deeply in denial rich boy too tempting to ignore. Especially when a bet has them working together, fighting the heat in the rundown, beachside cafe where Alex sweats for every dollar.

Their love felt inevitable until youth left them vulnerable to hatred and greed. Now after six years of hating the lies they live, Alex and Matt will have to risk it all for the second chance they both desperately need.

A freckle-faced redhead born and raised in Hawaii, Kele Moon has always been a bit of a sore thumb and has come to enjoy the novelty of it. She thrives on pushing the envelope and finding ways to make the impossible work in her story telling. With a mad passion for romance, she adores the art of falling in love. The only rules she believes in is that, in love, there are no rules and true love knows no bounds.

So obsessed is she with the beauty of romance and the novelty of creating it, she’s lost in her own wonder world most of the time. Thankfully she married her own dark, handsome, brooding hero who has infinite patience for her airy ways and attempts to keep her grounded. When she leaves her keys in the refrigerator or her cell phone in the oven, he’s usually there to save her from herself. The two of them now reside in Florida with their three beautiful children, who make their lives both fun and challenging in equal parts—they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hello Readers!!

Life's good!!I mean what else can I want with a cup of coffee and a good book, right??

Mmmmm...I'm still enjoying it!!

The coffee you can see...and as for the book,I'm going to tell you about it.....

"You want me to own you, don't you Matty?Tell me,and I'll give it to you."

Oh yes,yes,yes and yes.....

"You used to blush like that when I fucked you.God it turned me on.Still does.I wanna eat you."

Lord,it's hot out here!!

"What do you wan't to hear? That I've been jerking myself raw thinking about you for the past three days?"

**sigh**

Okay,now back to the story....

----------------------------------------------------------------

Meet Alex--

He owns the restaurant Starfish and Coffee in Mirabella Island.

All his life he has lived in Mirabella Island. He loves the beach at sunrise, when streaks of pink stretches across the night sky spreading the hope of a new day.

Now meet Matt---

He is hot and obscenely wealthy. The CEO of a chain of companies....

And they have nothing in common except.....

A connection which is soul-deep.

The beginning---

The story starts with Alex....walking across the sand.

He lifts his gaze to the shoreline and sees a man standing there as the waves rush past him.

Matt.

For a moment his breath catches and he knows this can't be true.He comes up behind Matt and wraps him up in his arms.....

"Loving Matt wasn't going to hurt him--not this time."

It is a new morning.A new beginning. And Alex wants to cherish it.

But...he looks up....and sees Matt's handsome face fade away.He reaches frantically for Matt's shoulder's...and his fingers slip through air, clutching at emptiness.

"No!Matty!Don't go!"

....he wakes up!!

-------------------------------------------------------------

Six years ago, they had met.Six years ago, they had fallen in love. And six years ago...their youth, stupidity and fate all together tore them apart!!

This is their story. How they meet...How they fall in love...How they separate..And how they meet again!

Sometimes FUN--

"I love you for your money."
"That doesn't make you unique.I thought you loved me for my sucking."
"That too."Alex agreed.

Sometimes HOT--

"You blush too easily Matty. You gotta stop that."
"Why?"
"Cause it gets my dick hard."

Sometimes BEAUTIFUL--

"He was tired of pretending Matt was anything less than the reason Alex looked forward to waking up in the morning."

Sometimes wildly ROMANTIC--

"Matt should probably be focusing on his oxygen deprived lungs, but he needed Alex just a little more than air."

So Readers...this is about second chances and finding your way back home.

Isn't that right???

No matter who you are,no matter where you are,no matter what you become....YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND YOUR WAY BACK HOME!!

And no matter what stupid things you have done on the way...you'll be forgiven!!

"Alex realized then the island wasn't his home;it had never been.Matt was his home...."

So,all of you,sit back with your cups of coffee, kick back your legs and enjoy!!

Sugar won't be needed....This book will provide all the sweetness.

Ta-Ta!!

Re-Read 4/5/2015!!

Just as good the second time around! It was one of my first MMs and it remains one of my favorites!

5--SMOKING HOT--Stars!!!

LOVED it!!! This one definitely one of the best (and hottest--oh wait, did I already mention how HOT it was?) M/M books I have read to date. Best part, it had a great story to go along with the HOT man sex!

Starfish and Coffee is the story of Alex and Matt (or Lexi and Matty, if you are so inclined). Alex is a beach rat--he grew up a fisherman's son, lives in a shack on the beach and works as a line cook in a diner. Matt is the heir of a chain of department stores--rich, privledged and a snowbirdie. Complete opposites yet perfect for each other.

The story is told in alternating POVs (yay!) and starts with present day--6 years after the end of Matt and Alex's relationship. Then it flashes back to when Matt and Alex first meet and fall in love. Afer the break-up Alex remained on Mirabella Island while Matt has been in Atlanta. Matt comes back to town for a two week visit and sees Alex for the first time in six years. He's finally able to get the answers he's longed for. Alex and Matt are given a second chance at the love they shared so many years ago.

I honestly loved everything about this story. I loved Matt and Alex as characters. I loved the build up of their relationship. I loved them together. Really a fantastic story of first loves and second chances.

4.5 stars!

^^^Me the entire book. At least it felt that way. Note to self, no more reading Kele Moon while in public.

I picked up this book because of a Goodreads genre recommendation. I was shocked I enjoyed this so much because Goodreads the website isn't a very good recommender. But I also have book friends who love Kele so I decided to give it a shot.

So Starfish and Coffee is the MM romance story of Alex and Matt. Alex is an islander in the south with no career aspirations other than to relax on the beach and fish. Matt is the rich boy from the main land who is taking a year off before running his family company. Both of these guys are something to swoon over.

Alex knows he's gay but has been deeply in the closet due to the small town life he lives. Matt finds himself attracted to Alex, but before him Matt always went for girls. What ensues is a really hot love affair with all of the forbidden boxes check marked along the way.

This was a wonderfully angsty read and being the angst whore I am, I ate it up. I like that the flash back happened all at once instead of back and forth, because that can be really annoying. We got the full story up front and it was refreshing in a second chance romance. I liked how blunt Matt was, and I liked Alex's carefree attitude. Both guys make great MC's.

So all of you MM lovers out there, this is the book for you. I'm just surprised it took me so long to hear of it, let alone read it. I will definitely be checking out more of Kele Moon's books after this one.

HOW TO RUIN MY MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF THE YEAR??? A tired, irritating plot device!!! Kele Moon, whyyyyyyyy????

Okay, okay, I have to breathe here. It isn't often that a book brings me to angry tears but I full-out angry cried during this book. Breathe, Heather, breathe.

I can see why people love this book and why most people expected me to love it too. It is a lovely sexuality discovery story (more like a coming to terms story) with a couple that has electric chemistry together. Alex and Matt had a deep emotional bond that I could feel coming off the pages.

And the sex... oh GOD. I love some sex!! The long, drawn out sex scenes were like candy for me. I gobbled them up. I could read about these guys doing it all day long.

However...

No, I'm still mad. Give me one more moment!

Okay. I'm calm, I swear, I'm calm!

I have certain pet peeves that just grow stronger with each book that I read. I have less and less tolerance for certain plot devices. Topping my list of biggest offenders are the . This story employs them both. All of the conflict in this story could have been resolved with one conversation between the two guys. Hell, even one sentence would have done the trick! I was seething. I was pulling my hair in anticipation of what was to come, muttering, "Don't you do it! Don't you F-ing do it!" but, alas, he DID IT.

There are other ways that the author could have written this book that I would have been more than satisfied with. I would have loved if this book had conflict that was deserved and worthy of all of that pain and suffering.

Despite my agony about the way the author handled some things, the story was touching and beautiful. I loved the couple together and I loved to watch the progression of their relationship. It made me so happy at times and I had a hard time putting this book down all day long. I wish the ending felt less rushed and I wish Holly and Will's relationship didn't mirror Matt and Alex's so closely.

I don't know, I'm still conflicted. Happy but conflicted? Maybe I'm still mad...

Solid 3.5+ stars...me likey...

The classic, basic and frankly, overdone M/M storyline: 2 boys fall in love, they live in a bigoted world where “coming out” seems impossible, drama ensues, but after all is said and done, we get a nice little HEA…and so the story goes.

If done poorly, a reader can walk away feeling bored, “been-there-done-that”, same book/different cover…

If done well, the story can feel like you’re hearing it for the first time. It can capture you with its intimacy and with its honesty…

“Starfish & Coffee” feels FRESH. There’s a lightness to it that’s inviting the reader to just ENJOY it. No need to overthink. No need to read it too critically. No need to hide that smile. “Come on in, take a load off, stay awhile…and while you’re here, please enjoy the company of my 2 sexy, adorable, loveable MC’s. “ Ahhhh…bliss.

Kele Moon writes Alex & Matt with such tenderness and care and reverence that it’s impossible NOT to fall in love with them. And you WILL fall in love with them. Their relationship feels so…PURE…which is odd to say since the book has some HOT (“knickers changing” (<-that’s for Gitte & Becs)) love scenes. And the “rekindled romance of our youth” storyline ALWAYS gets me…

Now, I will say that while swimming in all this sap, I still managed to notice that the book wrapped itself up almost too hastily in the final few chapters which annoyed me a bit. AND, as it’s clear she’s setting the story up for a possible series w/ the 2 secondary characters of Will & Holly, I really found no interest in them at all. I would have enjoyed more of the present day storyline for Alex & Matt, however.

But, by the “The End”, I felt handled w/ care and really enjoyed the read.

The story is actually nothing extraordinary or unusual. Two young men fell in love with each other, then they are separated by bigotry, fears, doubts, mistakes, and the lack of communication. Six years later they find each other again, and this time they don’t allow anything to come between them and live happily ever after.

The characters are special, unique, and outstanding, portrayed in a rich, vivid, and colorful way. Kele Moon's writing style is truly amazing. She conveys perfectly Alex and Matt’s feelings, their longing for each other, their growing affection, blinding lust, blooming love, doubts and the million questions they have about themselves, and about each other. Later their pain and heartbreak, and suffering without each other. It was amazingly done, and the author made me feel everything with her characters.

The structure of the plot is perfect, the dialogues are alive, the erotica and intimacy between them are magnetic and raw and pulsing and fiery and just...

A must read!

He wanted to stay here forever, drowning in the pleasure Matt was giving him. It didn’t matter that it left him wide open to be hurt. The risk was worth taking if it meant he got to be with Matt in every way possible. Alex knew it’d be over some day, he knew some sort of horrible loss was at the end of this road, but his game plan changed. He wanted to take this rare connection he shared with Matt for all it was worth. When it was over, he might be broken, but he’d have a fuckload of memories to sustain him.

My favorite quotes.

It was totally amazing! And perfect! And emotional, and sexy, and lovely, and light, and heartbreaking, and simply everything I wish for in a romance.

The best book I've read in 2014 so far.

Why...I seriously do NOT know WHY I had waited that long to read this book. I had no idea what I was missing out on. This book was beautiful and I loved every moment of it!

This book starts off in the present where Alex is being haunted by the memories of his relationship with Matt. No matter how much time has gone by since they went their separate ways, he still longs for him, and his feelings for him haven't dulled in the least. This is a story about a second chance at love, which I am a huge sucker for. It's been six years since Matt left Mirabella Island for Atlanta heart broken, and now he is temporarily back to his hometown where Alex still resides. But, when these two see each other again, that same connection that drew them to each other six years ago, is still very much present. They can't seem to stay away from each other no matter how hard they try.

The book then goes back in time to where Alex and Matt met. Matt was trying to avoid being stepping into his father's shoes as head of the family company. That isn't what he wants in life. So to rebel, he ends up working at a restaurant, something his mother disapproves of. Here is where he meets Alex. It was a rocky start but they end up hitting it off and soon become friends. However, Matt is attracted to Alex and little does he know that Alex feels the same way.

Alex has been "out" to himself and to his best friend Holly for quite sometime. He just doesn't want any one else finding out about it, especially his brother Will. When Alex realizes that what he is feeling for Matt may be reciprocated, he takes a risk and makes a move. They both agree it can only be sex and nothing more, but that quickly changes when their feelings get involved.

I loved this book to pieces! I loved both Alex and Matt. They were alpha, strong, sweet and super sexy together. I loved watching them fall in love, it seriously melted my heart. There were moments where both of them were so vulnerable, that it hurt me deeply seeing them in that state. But the love between them was so beautiful to read. The sex scenes were über HOT!! I am talking SMOKING!! They had such amazing chemistry together, both in and out of bed. I loved it all!!

In the end, I LOVED this book so much. I LOVED both Matt and Alex separately, but when they were together my heart was bursting with joy. I enjoyed the story line and that neither of the characters irritated the crap out of me, well except Matt's mother that is. I even liked Holly, but I did wish there would have been more of conclusion for Holly and Will. Other than that, I was happy for Alex and Matt. It was beautiful and I definitely recommend you give this a try.

If this were a Movie, it would be perfectly placed in the Chick Flick category...It is a story of Love ~ Found ~ Lost ~ Reunited. With a beautiful, emotional and intense road travelled to the final credits... Loved it!

408056

Set on the Island of Mirabella - a visual feast of sun drenched sands, clear blue water and warm nights partying on the beach... where a romance blossoms between two young men from opposite ends of the Islands social hierarchy, who are heady on the passions of youth and lost to the freedom of responsibility... that can only come from Island life.

Alex lives in a beach shack with his brother Will, he has no aspirations for the future. He works hard and plays harder... hiding his sexuallity behind the show of an intimate relationship with Holly, when in fact, they are the closest of best friends - without the benefits!

When Matt starts work at Franks Cafe, Alex is bemused! Why would a spoiled rich kid who was outrageously wealthy and drives a fancy car want to work at a beach cafe as a line cook? His life was mapped out for him before he was born... to take over and run the family business! Hmm...

Despite being poles apart in their social standings, Alex has had a crush on Matt for years... Matt confused about his own sexuality is affected by Alex and with his body reacting to the forbidden, Matt is curious to what those feelings are and where they might lead!

Matt and Alex become like a couple of love struck teenagers, flexing their muscles, intimate glances and desperate to spend time in each others company and of course, the sexual tension between them was palpable... all stomach flips and butterflies!

As a love story, this is most definitely character driven and Kelly Moon has done a great job in endearing those characters to my heart. Alex is adorable, totally laid back and funny. He is a man who doesn't take life seriously and enjoys it to the max. You would think with Matt being the total opposite that their relationship would be doomed, or perhaps an escape from reality for our arrogant and cocky rich boy who is used to getting what he wants. However Alex is So. Not. Impressed by money or social standing and the effect on Matt is one of comfort, almost a kind of sanctuary from the life that awaits him and the controlling bitch of a mother that likes to stick her nose in... where it is most definitely not wanted!

For me, the love scenes... yep, no casual sex here, it was sensual and erotic... and yes, my head is back in movie mode! Ms. Moon's great descriptives had me watching with my tongue hanging out! This was more than sex, it was soul deep, a connection on another level that neither of them had been to before. Their loving was intense... an emotional journey to that moment of ecstasy, absorbed in each others pleasure and drowning in the emotion... their love was profound - wanting to hold onto it forever, knowing that it would eventually come to an end.

This is the moment you get out the tissues and a box of chocolates and wrap yourself in a comforter and...ahhh bless!

As with all good Chick Flicks, you get to the end of this book with a warm and fuzzy feeling. This is an easy and enjoyable read that I would highly recommend for those days when you just want something nice that will make you smile, and this certainly did it for me.

4 ½ Emotionally Charged Stars!! I LOVED Alex and Matt, and their bittersweet journey on the road to everlasting love!

“I was born gay, and I will die gay.”

This is a story about finding love, losing it and trying to get it back. So many emotional ups and downs, my heart filled and then it bled for these two beautiful men.

Alex is easy going, arrogant, snarky, but also sweet and charming. Skating through life, and just doing what he needs to get by. He’s also gay and uses his friendship with his best friend Holly to hide behind. He allows people to believe that they have an intimate relationship. It’s easier to pretend, than to suffer the narrow minding thinking that he believes he will be subjected too if he outs himself to his brother and friends. Matt was born into wealth, and is expected to rule the empire created by his beloved deceased father. He lives with his manipulating, overbearing bitch of a mother, and appeases her just to keep the peace, although nothing seems to be good enough for her. Matt lives the life of the stereotypical rich boy, but underneath it all he’s incredibly kind, righteous and hides his pain and confusion over what he really wants to do and who he wants to love!

Alex and Matt meet when Matt takes on a bet from his friends to see if he can last 2 weeks working in the diner where Alex is a line cook. They know each other from a distance and lusted, but when they encounter each other in such close proximity, the fireworks begin. Initially I was annoyed at Matt and his selfish reasons for taking the job, but when he takes a stand against his controlling mother, he stole my heart. Their first sexual tryst is an eye opening experience for Matt and was seat squirmer for me…YOWZA! As they continue to explore their intimate relationship, they realize that this is what they have both been looking for and ultimately fall in love. Oh my, to say I felt the passion and desire that they had for each other would be an understatement…they couldn’t get enough of each other and I couldn’t get enough of them…RAWRRRR!

They both find strength in each other to move forward in their relationship. Alex now has the support and love he needs to live his true life, and Matt has found a way to escape from the smothering life that’s been holding him hostage and love openly…or will they?

Kele Moon has a way of drawing the reader in and playing with their feelings and parts of the book brought me to tears. The underlying message of gay prejudice plays itself nicely into the story, but it’s the message of love that shines through. The book is filled with wonderful dialogue, explicit emotional sex scenes, that have just enough dirty to depict the erotic nature of the book, but are sensual and based on the deep connection that Alex and Matt have for each other. *SWOON*!!

My one complaint…the name Lexie, Matt's endearment for Alex. I loved Lex, but Lexie…I just couldn’t warm to it. Too much like a girl’s name and Alex is ALL man!! Also, a few issues involving other characters that needed to be addressed, namely Will and Holly. However, I still LOVED the book!!

I want a Mirabella Island series *stomps feet*! I NEED Will and Holly’s story; when did they realize the feelings they had for each other were mutual, why did he leave, what happened when Alex went to see him in NYC?? Jamie needs a book too! See Kele...I have the whole series laid out for…love on the island!! PLEASE!

My younger version of Alex and Matt!

”You think the marlin are biting this year?”

I swear that line gave me goosebumps…

Alex is a guy who’s been living all his life in Mirabella island with his brother Will and his friends. He hasn’t had an easy life but he’s doing well. Matt is a rich boy who is just enjoying one year off his crazy and “perfectly calculated” life.

They are opposites but they still can’t fight what they feel when they’re together. Not even Matt who is apparently straight.

”What do you want to hear? That I’ve been jerking myself raw thinking about you for the past three days?”

So that’s the premise of the book… What will happen when carefree local boy and Mr Perfect decide to give their feelings a try? I’ll tell you what will happen, you’ll feel goosebumps every time they are together, you’ll want them to have a HEA, you’ll want them to fight everyone to stay together but fate might have different plans for them.

SIX YEARS LATER…

You want to know what happens six long years later? Then read this book and enjoy their journey.

I am not going to sell you this like this is the most original story. It’s not but the way the author tells you the story is so special that you’ll love this book with its imperfections and all. And yeah, the sex was beyond hot!

And the last

Lately, just a few books give me the butterflies. Well, Starfish and Coffe was one of them.

"Alex realized then that the island wasn't his home; it never had been. Matt was his home..."

An un-putdownable gem from Kele Moon!

This story starts out in the present day, with Alex somewhat contentedly working in the restaurant he owns and runs with this best (girl) friend. An ordinary day in the life of a simple man, until Matt walks in. Matt, the only man Alex ever truly felt for, and not only the one who got away, but the one he pushed away, the one who lives in his dreams and nightmares, the one that stars in all his regrets...

Quickly, the reader is thrown back into the past, with Alex, the poor orphan kid living with his brother and best friend, happily working as a cook during the day and partying all night, occasionally making a trip to Key West for random hookups with random guys. And Matt, the island rich kid in training to take over his father's fortune 500 company, takes a bet to work a grunge job for two weeks. Alex is gay, Matt is curiously turned on by the hottie working the flat top. And the two begin a fast sexual frenzy that turns into a surprisingly natural, loving relationship. But Matt only has one year of freedom from his future responsibilities. And Alex must deal with his consuming love for a man that is way out of his league...a man with big goals, even bigger responsibilities, and a huge hold from his family. Alex makes a very bad...and very sad...decision that effects both he and Matt for the next six years...

This was, quite simply, captivating. Though the pace was somewhat slow, the overall tone is a sexually charged yet intimate story of two good people who are exact opposites. Yet they are exactly right for each other.
"It was the sexiest, most exciting, but unbelievably low maintenance relationship Matt had ever been in..."

I literally cried my way through about the last thirty percent of this book...not huge sobbing ugly tears, but the kind of tears that make your eyes blurry. My heart was heavy, it was broken, along with Matt's and Alex'.
"We're gonna play pretend", Alex said, his lips trailing up to Matt's ear.
"Oh, fuck." Matt's voice dripped with both desire and sadness. "No, no, no. Don't-"
"We're gonna pretend that day never happened," Alex went on, trying desperately to hold himself together. "That we have forever."

Holy geez, it just doesn't get much sexier than this, either. Swallow your tongue sexy. And just what I needed right now. If you like M/M but, like me, are surprised at how PG-13 a lot of M/M reads are, this is a good one for you! It goes on my M/M sexy shelf, and also my favorites!
"For just a moment, Matt felt like he could taste the essence of true love, the sheer joy of finding the other half of his sol in another..."

4 1/2 Stars!!

Kele Moon you've done it again!

At twenty-two, Alex Hunter is a native of Mirabella Island off the coast of Florida. He doesn't have much ambition beyond the next good time, and he's poor enough to be lacking in opportunities to improve his life. He's also gay. Though, he's too scared to admit the last to most of his friends, as well as his brother. The same age, Matt Tarrington is rich and the heir to a business empire. He's fulfilling a bet made with his wealthy friends by working for a year in a local diner on the island. To put it mildly, he's unsure about his sexual preferences. The two young men could not be more opposite. And, yet, somehow they ultimately fall deeply in love. However, their youth leaves them vulnerable to fear, and a regrettable six year separation follows. All these years later, are they both mature and courageous enough to finally risk everything for the love of a lifetime?

Sexy, lusty and also deeply emotional, Starfish and Coffee by the amazing Ms. Kele Moon is a wonderful story! This is a character driven and relatively simple read, but no less powerful for it. Matt and Alex are wonderfully fleshed-out characters, each with his own set of strengths and weaknesses. The chemistry between these two is scorchingly HOT!! Holy tingly bits, these boys are ON FIRE! If you've read any Kele Moon prior, though, you pretty well know to expect this. She has me spoiled because she is stellar at writing super-charged, intimate scenes between characters. Even better, however, is that she builds these scenes on a firm foundation of deep feeling and emotion. And, while the intense sexual attraction between characters is what, undoubtedly, first catches our attention, it's the emotion, the feeling, which keeps us all glued to the page until the very last word. Starfish and Coffee does exactly that.

So, why not five stars? My reason for that is probably purely subjective. There were one or two small areas in the story where I would love to have seen a bit more expansion. One of those being familial relationships. I feel like a bit more exploration there could have made the overall story just ever slightly more solid.

To be serious for a moment, there is one important point I do want to make here. I've neglected to mention it on other reviews of her books, and I regret that. Many of Kele Moon's stories carry the message of equality. And, the fight for equality can and does apply in many ways (not only sexual orientation) in each of our lives. I know it does in mine, for my own reasons. Everything she writes seems to encourage an open mind and an open heart. I think that's a valuable lesson to be reinforced. Now, Kele certainly doesn't slap you upside the head with what she believes. She isn't shoving anything down anyone's throat. It's beautifully woven into the story, but it's there nonetheless. That's one of my favorite things about this author. She inspires me to keep thinking and growing, even while she's entertaining the hell out of me;-) Now that? That's some talent! Give her a try if you haven't already. If you are familiar with Kele Moon, then I guarantee you won't be disappointed with this story!

4.3 Stars - emotional, romantic and delicious hot - a lovely story

When I was asked to read and review my "oldest" unread gay romances for the blog - Boys In Our Books' Spring Cleaning Week, I found Starfish and Coffee by Kele Moon there.
A lot of readers seems to love this story and it was absolutely time for me to read it at last. This event felt like a great and challenging opportunity. A highly regarded book like this one should not collect dust on a wish list.

And all these beautiful words of praise, were they true?
Thanks for asking me!! I got pretty much everything I could wish for in this book. A very romantic, emotional, sizzling hot and beautiful, both heartwarming and heartbreaking, story. I really enjoyed it. ~ Should have read it long ago.

My review on "Boys In Our Books" April 22.

***********************************************************

It was the summer when Matt Tarrington was twenty-two and came to Mirabella Island for a year off for relaxation, as he got to know someone he in the end cared about more than any other person.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos

Just to have something to do, to win a bet and maybe also to tease his upper class mother, Matt takes a 'simple' job in the kitchen at a beachside cafe. There at Frank's works also a young islander. Matt sees himself as straight, maybe sometimes a little bit tempted to guys, but there's something about this blonde, tanned, "beach-hunk" that attracts more than ever before.

Alex Hunter on the other hand has for years had an eye for this good-looking rich guy in one of the large summer houses. He is gay, and okay with that, but feel he need to be closeted. Rich boys like Matt are of course completely off limits, but Alex finds Matt too tempting to just ignore.
‘After it was out, they stayed there in the silence, the water lapping at their skin and sun beating on their backs as they held each other.’

***********************************************************

It was perhaps a silly bet that made it all began to steam in that warm cafe kitchen, but it ended up being so much more. It was passion, love and friendship. ~ They were perhaps from opposite sides of the tracks and had, as it looked, really nothing in common. But they were young, needy and free to live as they wanted. It was sun, bear, party, beaches and sand, starfish and coffee....hot, and absolutely amazing days.
Photobucket Pictures, Images and Photos
‘...wild, young and free like it once was.’

But the lovely fairy tale was shattered...

***********************************************************

You know from the first page that something happened. Starfish and Coffee start when a time have passed and Matt is back on the island. He is there again that sexy, beautiful, rich guy from the mainland. Nice, good-looking and confident is Matt still like a unattainable golden dream for Alex.
‘The wash of desire was overhelming. It was softer, sweeter, infinitely purer, but it was also a thousand times more powerful.’

***********************************************************

Starfish and Coffee is lovely in the story's youthful sweetness and joy of life in the beginning, and later in the last part, it becomes an epic hot angsty drama. So well worth reading. A romantic girl as me can without a doubt not resist this. Most of all - is it deeply emotional. It's heart, pain and all kinds of emotions.

Though I try to hold back sometimes, I become completely sucked into this whole emotional storm. In the end, I simply can't but swallow a grandiose ending. Maybe I should actually snort sometimes, but it's so damn cute. ‘The kiss tasted like home.’ ~ Ah jeez, it did.

I want to laugh, smile, gasp and sigh with pleasure, and even sob, when I read my romances. I want to see "the movie", these beaches, these beautiful guys and all this yummy scenes. ~ Sweet, but not sugary. Steaming hot, but not so much that it took over. Just lovely...

Recommended to all romance-hungry "boys who loves boys" fans.

I LIKE - undoubtedly, this one gave me what I want

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful ...

A story about starfish...

and coffee...

and two very different but equally gorgeous men falling madly in love...
"Holly thinks I should tell you I love you,” Alex whispered once he caught his breath. “At a time when it actually counts."

Matt’s chest tightened, and he had to clear this throat. "Now would probably count."

Alex reached up and brushed at Matt’s wet hair; then he pushed up and whispered into his ear. "I love you, Matty."

and then the unthinkable happened... *sigh*

The story had a fair dose of angst and was totally impossible and very believable at the same time. The characters were amazing, the loving was tender and sensual and oh so,so hot...

The reunion after 6 years was heart-stopping and the ending made my heart swell
"That’s the nice thing about home. One way or another, you usually find your way back"

Highly recommended enjoyable M/M romance

This was a fabulous read to which I give 4.5 stars, and I won't be going into a load of drivel for the review. Suffice it to say that there were two lovely guys, a sensual, tender romance, a perfect setting, some really good friends, lots of food, and another complete cow-pat of a mother who has my undying hatred!! I shall be looking out for more of your books dear author!!

***4 Sand, Surf and Sex Stars***

This was a beautifully written, bittersweet story of two men who typically wouldn't be friends but turn into so much more.

The book begins in the present with Alex's nightmare of regret having lost Matt from his life. For six years he's been trudging through life without him. Out of the blue Matt shows up at Alex's work and conjures up all of the old memories and emotions. He's come back to the beach, and to Alex, to find out what happened all those years ago. At this, we're transported back to where their story began.

Matt is an upper-class rich kid, taking a year off of college to live and work on the beach. Once his year is over, he's to go back to school, get his degree and take over the family business.

Alex is a local beach bum, for better or worse. He works in a run down restaurant, helps as a caretaker for tourist beach shack rentals and lives a carefree life. His biggest worry in life is which swim trunks to wear that day.

Alex has known of Matt since elementary school as that's when Matt's family bought a summer home on the beach, but they've never really met. When Matt takes a job at the restaurant Alex works at, the two bond over their misery. One night, one thing leads to another and the two have a very intimate moment on the beach. From there Matt shares his attraction to men and Alex shares his closeted lifestyle.

What ensues is an emotional love affair. During the day every stolen moment, hand touch and secret glance is felt. Their nights are filled with shared dreams and passionate lovemaking. Escapes on a boat for deep sea fishing and swimming allows the two to have the sun shine on their love. Both are living in the moment and the uncertainty of what may come after their year is up.

Outside influences play a large role in their relationship and ultimately, the two must decide what's more important....career, family or each other?

I loved Matt and Alex. Alex's carefree lifestyle and Matt's lack of filter at times played out great. The setting of the book felt like another character, and it would certainly have a different feel to it if the location was somewhere else. I could practically smell the saltwater while reading.

This would have easily been a five star read for me if it weren't for a few things:

1. Matt's cherry popping was a bit sudden for me. Call me a prude, but I would have liked a bit of anticipation leading up to it.

2. I didn't understand the side story with Holly and Will. Didn't quite feel necessary to the plot and then any type of conclusion was rushed at the end. Almost as an afterthought to just give them some sort of closure. Unless they're going to be getting their own book down the road.....which I'd definitely be on board with.

3. I didn't understand all of Holly's nudity and her VERY close relationship with Alex. I get it, he's gay...nothing will every happen. But they sleep naked, shower and change around each other, skinny dip together with her wrapping all her junk around him. Again, this may just boil down to what appears to be my prudish tendencies.

As you can see by my rating, even my few quirks didn't severely affect my enjoyment of the book. So, if you're a fan of beautifully written, emotional and hot MM books, then I highly recommend this one.

I expected this story to be one of those done-to-death romances of young love lost & found with a gay-for-you, coming-out trope. I knew how it was going to go before I even started – the synopsis is quite telling. I was in the mood for a nice enjoyable story but what I never would have guessed, is how much I would ADORE it.

Matthew (Matt) Tarrington: privileged, beautiful, straight republican, and a fearless frat boy who is the heir to a Fortune 500 company and a heart attack waiting to happen meets (officially) Alex Hunter: orphaned, beach bum, gorgeous, gay, closeted, zero college education and he works as a line cook! And on the scruffy side of Mirabella Island no less. Alex is so far removed from Matthew’s social standing he should be on another planet.

These guys should have nothing in common, apart from being young and horny. A fast friendship develops despite their differences and initial opinions of each other. But the attraction and chemistry between them is POWERFUL and dominant. None of the dangers of being discovered can deny the desire and consequent secret love affair that ensues. I believed in every word of their dialogue, and action; I was completely side-swiped by their soul-deep romance, the build-up and execution totally flawed me.

The sex - and there is a lot of sex - is an erotic toe-curling exploration as tender as it is wild and made more life-like by moments of uncertainty which briefly dilutes the passion, but fuels and compounds the sweet realism of the moment. Each and every time was a moment the reader gets to cherish and revel in – so beautiful, so erotic, so powerful and made to last {insert dreamy sigh here} a million years.

My response to their love exposes my jaded and cynical heart to aching emotions, which proves to me that love stories like this still have the ability to move me deeply. I LOVED it. I loved them; together and as individuals, they both shine. I wanted to stay with these guys on Mirabella Island forever. If I could just be the one to towel dry them after skinny dips and fishing trips and pass the condoms, I’d be a happy woman.

This should have been perfect! And most of it was perfect, the setting, the romance, the characters, even the break up was perfect. Then toward the end it all just slips away down the slippery slope to fall in line with all the other mediocre rekindled love tropes; and mediocrity does no befit Alex and Matt’s story. Oh how I stomped my foot and wailed for it not to be so, shaking my fist in the face of ordinary didn’t work but I sucked it up and wouldn’t let it steal my glow.

I was willing to overlook the seriously weird, too close relationship that Alex shares with Holly (which creeped me out) and the villainess who wouldn’t have been out of place in a pantomime where I could boo and hiss every time she made an entrance. Yes, I was going to ignore all that, but the last 20% is too rushed and lacks any anticipation of the big reunion, which is hasty and most uninspiring. Ordinary. The six years of separation are too briefly glossed over with minimum build up to the present. I got my HEA (not a spoiler) but I feel cheated because the book just got shoved into the realm of chick flick – urghhhh!

A more detailed review later, but this is waffling around a 4 or 4.5 so I'm rounding up.

I hate to say it, but Will practically ruined this book for me. Dude was a dick of epic porportions to more than one person, and fuck, I wanted him to jump into an active volcano.

There were also, ehhh, some very minor typos and grammar errors.

The big misunderstanding at 92%, along with the hurtful (but realistic) pretend game, kind of diminished my glow.

I would have liked the ending to focus more on Alex and Matt currently and to have seen them really work through their problems and learn to love each other as the men of today.

But, you know what?? Who. Fucking. Cares.

This book made me so happy on so many levels for so long. I held off finishing it because it made me so happy. The characters were realistic, yet dreamy enough to hold the ideal nature of that one true love and romanticism in books I seek. The dialouge felt natural, witty, and at times, downright filthy. I completely bought Matt and Alex's relationship because the author took the time to build it. I read their memories of them passing each other by for years in school and on the beach to reading about when they first started working together and not being able to deny their attraction. She built their interactions up slowly, but never to where it dragged out. There is a ton of sex in this book, but it always felt fresh, new, and exciting, so that I felt like I was really experiencing their connections as the characters did.

The first 'I love yous' broke my fucking heart into a million pieces, and I swear I will never look at a marlin again without thinking of these two men. Who the fuck would ever think I'd say that statement, especially about a fish, but that's the beauty of this author's writing for that scene.

This book made me feel like the two men felt at the beach, where I was off somewhere in this hidden special vacational place, but I felt safe and at home. I didn't want to return to a reality of my own or somewhere that Matty and Lex weren't together.

So, this book isn't perfect and I've noticed the friends that I almost always agree with on books have rated this between a 3 to a 5. I can see reasonings for any of those ratings, but I think anyone would enjoy this book as a getaway.

2.5 stars rounded up to 3.0

Matt Tarrington is rich, rich, rich. He is destined to inherit the department store conglomerate that is his family's legacy. Confident and focused on the outside, inside Matt struggles against the life thrust upon him since birth. After college, he takes a year off as a respite from his life. Living the life of a beach bum (albeit a rich one) on Mirabella Island, Matt meets and falls head-over-heels in love with Alex Hunter - a laid back local and closeted gay man from the opposite side of the tracks. For a year, the two work side-by-side in a rundown, beachside cafe where Alex sweats for every dollar he earns ... and life is grand. But all good things must come to an end. Alex breaks off the love affair and the two part ways until six years later, when Matt walks back into Alex's life again.

I soooooooooooooooooooo wanted to like this book. And I could've, and I would've if it weren't for a couple hang-ups. First, Alex and Holly. W.T.F.?!?!??! BFFs that sleep (practically in the nude) with each other? Seriously?!?!! That's one jacked up BFF. Nuff said.

Next, That is NEVER heroic in my book.

Lastly, doormats. I hate them. I loved Matt. Adored him. He didn't deserve to be Alex's doormat.

Bottom line: This one had the makings for a great book but it fell short IMHO because Alex was so undeserving of Matt. I'm a Kele Moon fan and remain so. I just didn't care for the ending here ... or Holly.

I'm so excited I read this. I've had it on my to-read shelf for so long and I thought it was finally time to read it.

It was very sweet, emotional and even heartbreaking at times. It's about the reunion between ex lovers after six years of separation. I loved how their past was told through flashbacks of how they met, how they came together, how they ultimately fell in love and how they broke up.

I loved their relationship that was told through the flashback. I fell in love hard with these two boys, they made me swoon, and then it felt like my heart was being ripped out when they broke up.

But I loved seeing them rekindle their relationship. It was so heartwarming and sweet.

This story is one of those where you start at the end, then see the beginnings and come back to the present again and go from there.I always find this tactic to be a bittersweet one, seeing their current situation, then going back to see how good things were, and then now....gah! But it really works for me on the emotion side of things. This way I get drawn in and I am on tenterhooks the whole way through wanting to know what goes wrong and when.

Alex has been living a empty life for the past six years. The only good thing about his life is that he has bought and brought life and success to a coffee shop, Starfish and Coffee. This shop is where he and Matt, the love of his life, got together, and found an unexpected love with one another. Matt was the island's golden boy, rich and spoiled he was looking for an out from his preplanned life of business and shallow relationships.Alex was a closeted gay and their relationship was kept completely secret until something happened that tore them apart. Six years later Matt is gone and has been for a long time, all that is left is a broken heart and an empty existence for Alex.

This story of finding love, losing it and then reclaiming it again is an emotionally charged one. Made especially hard by the fact that these two men are having to hide everything. Neither has outed themselves to their family or friends and as Matt is destined to inherit his father's business and social standing and Alex is the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, there is enormous pressure to stay hidden. The stolen moments between these two are intimate and special and sometimes I really felt like I was intruding on something beautiful. From the initial awareness of each other, to there first interlude ......"You wanna try something different?"....to the moment they thought they might actually like a relationship..."I wanna make this real, Matty,"Alex said once he found the ability to speak again. His thoughts were fractured, and his voice was still raspy with pleasure. " Like.....boyfriends, not rent boys. Okay?" and finally the I love you,( perfect day) I was completely drawn to this couple. The sexual tension was off the charts and I was fanning myself throughout just to deal with how explosive and hot these two were together.

Alex and Matt's personalities were just so likable, Alex even though so strong and dominant had a vulnerability about him. Matt who could have been a shallow little rich boy had depth and his honesty and caring nature really won him over for me.

This has been my favourite read of the year so far. I don't know what else I could ask for in a romance novel, but to me this book lacked nothing. Great plotline with an undeniable connection between characters, wonderful visually attractive setting,so well written I could smell the beach I swear.A heart wrenching story so good, that I couldn't help but shed a tear or two. Dammit, I wanted these two boys to have their happily ever after. The secondary characters Holly and Will, who I am hoping we will see again in their own story, were a welcome addition and also well developed. I cannot gush enough about this one.

Kele Moon has a knack for getting that something special in her relationships and transferring it to paper in a way that I feel it. I have enjoyed all of her stories, short or long, but this one is tied for first alongside Beyond Eden.

This will definitely be a book I come back to, I would recommend it to all m/m romance lovers, but especially those who like something sweet and hot.

"So long as I can breathe or I can see, so long lives your love which gives life to me.
-William Shakespeare

When I started reading this book, I knew I would love this one. Which I still did after finishing it. Hot and Good!

I am a sucker for second chances themed books. I love the angst it would bring(Angst? who would love that? Well, me apparently.)and that moment when the love that was lost was found again. (Yep. That's the romantic side of me talking)

I love the main characters. Both radiating with dominance. They are good to each other. And the sex scenes were hot which surprisingly did not bothered be seeing as this book contains a lot. And the unresolved sexual tension when they first met? god. That was vibrating. It was so thick a knife could cut it.

I'm not going to say a lot aside from saying that I really enjoyed this one. Though I could have welcome more angst.(my other self: seriously?! You want more?! the other self: Yeah! The parting scene hardly made me cry!)

If you are a fan of second chances themed books too. You might want to read this! :)

There are much better reviews out there for this, like Shelley's, that says it all much better than I can or could.

But...

This was good. I love a reunion love story.

The way it was told was refreshing; starting with the present and leading us to the past to fall in love with Alex and Matt as they fall in love with each other. The boys were so romantic and the sex was hot but more important, it was emotional. You felt the connection each time Matty and Lex did, you had no choice. It was overwhelming and beautiful and I couldn't get enough of it. I even cried during one and me crying during sex scenes, usually only happens with a few authors, so kudos to Ms. Moon for that.

I get the frustration some readers had with the end or what tore Matt and Alex apart, I didn't like it either but it did make up for some intense make up sex.

At the end, this was a great romance of finding that one person you just can't live without. Period.

It would be interesting if Will and Holly got their own book... do they have their own book? I need to look into that.
