When The Moon Sets is a collection of journal entries and poems I have written over time. These shared thoughts and feelings are to illustrate who I was in the deepest and darkest moments of my life and who I am working on becoming each day.
When The Moon Sets is a collection of poetry that sets out to empower and recognize just how strong we are. The thing I loved most about this book is the many overlays of topics. The sun and moon, heart and mind, light and dark; they all have one thing in common, you can’t have one without the other, and When The Moon Sets captures beautifully how intertwined these topics are. Though some pieces give you a sense of pain their is relief in reading their counterparts and seeing a change in certain words as you get further into the book. I loved feeling the shift of emotions as I read and how affirmed I felt.
I was intrigued by the title the further I got into reading, the moon being the center of attention in the beginning but it quickly flourishes as you hit the poem that is inspired by or inspired the title. There was a sense of darkness to the first half much inspired by the moon and I loved how she captured the essence of everything the night becomes. Dreams, reflections, sleepless nights just to name a few. I could feel such a connection to so many pieces being someone who loves the moon and reading her thoughts I felt almost as if I was listening to my own at times.
One of my favorite pieces in the first half was the opening piece of the book. The opening line begins “I said goodbye to the moon today.” A line I fell in love with because as much as I love the moon, I know the dark can't last forever and this concept is spoken about gracefully throughout the book. The second half of the book shines a light on growth and learning to appreciate the light just as much as the dark represented in the piece named Goodnight, moon and its opening line “I don’t hate the sun anymore.”
In all, I loved reading this collection of poems and though short this journal of experience is one I can say I’ll pick up again.
