Ember of Night #2

Shadow of Light

Rate this book
Perfect for fans of Brigid Kemmerer and Tracy Wolff, the second novel in Molly E. Lee’s angels-and-demons YA series will keep readers turning pages until the very end.

I just saved the boy I’m falling for from a gruesome death by a demon. And what does he have to say? I’m the key to opening the gates of Hell. I mean, a thank-you would’ve been nice. Or another scorching-hot, forbidden kiss. Either way, destiny will have to find someone else to torment, because I’m so done.

Or I was, until my little sister starts cackling exorcist-style and stares at me with eyes that aren’t hers. They’re Marid’s, the Greater Demon I just kicked back to the dark realm he came from. Possessing Ray whenever he wants is his ultimate revenge.

The only way to break the tether between them includes a road trip through Hell, aka the Ather. I quickly discover nothing is as it seems in this place. Yeah, there are realms of terror, greed, and desire, but there’s also peace, and a beauty I never knew existed...and it’s eerily familiar.

With each obstacle we encounter, I slip a little further into the chaotic energy of my growing dark powers. And when an unexpected betrayal hits me square in the chest, I freefall into them.

Fate painted me as the monster of nightmares, and after this? Destiny is about to learn just how monstrous I can be.

A YA fantasy of sisterhood, family, and the lengths you’ll go to save the ones you love, Shadow of Light has tons of intense, heart-pounding action, surprising revelations, and immersive and vivid world-building. The story is so immersive and intriguing, and it sucked me right in. The characters and world-building are dynamic and intriguing, and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened, especially after the ending of the first book! Plus, there’s the romance!

The book picks up where Ember of Night left off. Determined to kill the demon who has possessed her beloved younger sister, Hayley journeys to Hell with her sister Ray, Draven, and others by her side. As they travel through the different circles of Hell, they must face demons, the ever-present threat of the Twelve Greater Demons, and many other obstacles before they can break the tether that ties Ray to the evil demon that possesses her.

This is a great continuation of the series, and the author creates such a unique, vivid, and frighteningly dangerous world. I was captivated by each new setting that Harley and the others travel to. They are intriguing and dangerous, and you never know what might happen in each new place that they go to. Danger comes from every direction for Harley, and there is a building sense of urgency surrounding her quest. It makes for a super intense and suspenseful read.

Harley grows a lot throughout her journey, and she learns so much about her powers. I enjoyed seeing her become more self-aware, stronger, and she never loses her sense of humor or her sarcastic wit. She also cares deeply and will do anything for those she loves. Harley’s love for Ray is what propels her throughout the series, and their relationship is wonderful. I love Ray! She always has such a positive attitude and tries to see the good in everyone. She is a strong foil to Harley, who is a bit more jaded and cynical.

I also love the found family aspect of the story, and it’s really powerful when they are referred to as Harley’s tribe. In the midst of the danger and chaos, Harley has found her people, and that is a wonderful thing. Old characters and new become close and aid Harley in her quest, and their growth as a unit adds an interesting layer to the story. I’m curious to see how these relationships grow and change as the story continues. I’m particularly intrigued by a character who has minor but significant role in the story. He doesn’t actually go on the quest with Harley and the others, but he has a unique connection to her. I have a feeling he might have a larger role in the story, and I’m eager to learn more about this intriguing character.

Of course, I have to talk about the romance because it is swoon-tastic! Harley and Draven are a team, and they are so good together. Their relationship is not without conflict. They don’t always agree, and both make mistakes, but their bond is strong and continues to strengthen in this story. There are some wonderfully tender moments that show just how deeply this couple cares for one another, and I think they both open up more about their feelings, which is lovely. This relationship has come a long way, and I have a feeling it will continue to face challenges and grow as the series continues.

Shadow of Light is a fast-paced, action-packed addition to the series, and I enjoyed every nail-biting second of it. An immersive read with great messages and characters (plus an awesome romance!), this is a great read for lovers of YA fantasy. I would recommend reading the first book in the series before you read this one, as it is not really a standalone. Thanks so much to NetGalley, Entangled Teen, and Molly E. Lee for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review. I’m loving this series and can’t wait to see what happens next in Harley’s journey!

Thank you to the publisher for sending me an advanced digital copy of the book!

Actual rating- 4.5
*Might contain some spoilers*

"I've never been able to live in hope for too long, and even though things are looking better than they have in a long time, I can't stop the nagging sensation that if I look at a picture of happiness too long, it'll turn to ash"

omigod! this book is a total ride.Molly E Lee's second installment of Ember of Night series fortunately do NOT suffer the middle book curse as she delivers an impressively immersive continuation of Harley's (mis)adventure. Shadow of light picks up right where we were left off in the first book but wouldn't wait a beat before delivering a crucial point of the story. Just when Harley dares to dream of a "normal" teenage life, she faces trouble in the form of her sister Ray, who falls prey to Marid's brutal games. Harely as we expect rolls her shirt sleeves to see the end of it BUT only to realize the end is one of the places she least expected to visit HELL or Ather in formal terms. Thus Harley, Ray and Draven along with Cassiel sets an unusual journey to Ather with the help of the resident sorcerer Kaz

In all honesty I was little hesitant to pick up book 2, although it took a while for me to get into it, the story picked up soon after and then I couldn't stop! The chapters were short and every chapter ended on an exciting note that made me want to turn pages with twists I didn't see coming at every turn. There were also new characters introduced and Wallace is my absolute favorite, she is no BS person giving you facts straight to your face which lead to a super fun dynamic between her and Harley.Harley on the other hand is constantly on rage trying to curb her dark powers that even she doesn't fully comes to understand but her sarcasm and dark humor made me laugh out loud so many times. The romance between Draven and Harley definitely took one (or few) step further on the spice-o-meter making the book read like NA at times which I was totally ok with, I also loved Ryder’s character and the little heart to heart moment with Harley.

The world of Ather with so many realms was tastefully written in my opinion and Molly takes us on an unforgettable adventure in a rig that was reminiscent of Fury Road at times ;)

The fast paced story with demons and interesting blend of urban fantasy and paranormal fantasy definitely is going to be a people pleaser especially if you enjoy YA shows like Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina-the newer scarier one ;) and The Vampire diaries. It specifically made me think of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina show towards the end and of course it ended on a cruel cliffhanger slashing the heart of Harley and as well as all the readers! I seriously cannot wait to see how the story concludes.

Read if you like:
-Fast paced fantasy with nonstop action/adventure with unpredictable twists
-Badass teenage female MC
-Paranormal fantasy with the premise of hell and earth
-Shows like CHAOS or The Vampire diaries
-Sizzling romance that may or may not be because of the influence of the lust realm ;)

Welcome back to this weeks episode of Ariel losing her mind over yet another cliff hanger. I really should have seen this coming after the way book one ended, yet here we are.

Jumping into this one was a little difficult. l remember reading and loving book one earlier this year, but for some reason the details were a bit fuzzy. I went back and reread the last few chapters of book one before diving in and it had me all geared up to jump back into this world!

Buckle up friends, we’re going to Hell!

Shadow of Light picks up right where Ember of Night leaves off. One of the things I wanted more of from book one was answers about Ray. I’m happy to report that many of those questions are answered as this book is quite literally a journey to Hell to break the tether between Marid and Ray.

If you, like me, are a fan of a steamier fantasy romance book, you will love how much Molly Lee turns up the heat! Especially once we reach Lusro (the realm of Lust).

This fast paced book had me flying through pages, desperate for more while dreading the end knowing I’ll have to wait until May of next year for Spark of Ash to release. 😭

Perfect for fans of Jennifer Armentrout and Tracy Wolff, read if you love:
- badass fiercely protective MC
- found/chosen family
- urban/paranormal fantasy
- fast paced adventures
- bad boy turned protective cinnamon roll love interest
- NA forbidden romance 🔥🔥🔥

Thank you Entangled Teen and Molly Lee for the e-arc!

My poor sweet little Harley, just as she thought she may be able to live somewhat of a normal life she gets suckered right back in again and ends up having to go to Hell to save her sister, so naturally our resident bad boy we love to death called Draven goes along with her.

This is the wonderful second instalment to this series and I’m really enjoying this easy middle grade read. The characters are wonderful, the plot is incredible and the authors mind is clearly a wonderful place to live.

Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

“I’m thinking that you two deserved very different, much brighter lives. And I’m wondering how much of a selfish bastard I am because I know this, and yet I’m happy you came into my life.”

Esta segunda parte estuvo bastante interesante e entretenida diría yo, pero sinceramente esperaba más de la historia. Que sin duda creo que la voy a tener en el tercer libro, y lo pienso por ese final tan impactante.

"“I will find you,” he says. “You know I will. I always will.”
“Promise?” My lids droop closed without me agreeing to it.
“Promise,” he whispers, but he sounds so far away.”"

“I’ll be whatever you need me to be, Harley. Always.”

Pero eso sí, tengo unas ganas de saber el final de esta historia, que espero leerla pronto.

“If I start touching, Harley,” he says, his voice low, raw, “I won’t be able to stop touching you.”

"Three tickets to Hell please, and a side of fries while you're at it."

What a captivating sequel. I haven't been this addicted to a book in quite some time. It was an unforgettable journey that had me staying up all night and downloading the next book immediately.

I really enjoyed the Ather. Its various realms were described beautifully, creating a unique and immersive atmosphere that I found to be much more engaging than the setting of the first book.

I didn't realise how badly this series needed additional characters. Wallace, Cassiel, Ryder, and Wrath really enhanced the story. Harley finally got her found family and we got to enjoy their banter (and near death experiences). It elevated the book from a four to five star experience ⭐.

Harley undergoes significant character growth in this installment, but she still has some maturing to do. I'm hoping we'll finally see her fully accept her power - and herself - in the next book. I love when she loses her cool and says f-ck it, you're not pushing me around any more.

Some of you will be delighted to know that there is spice in this book 🌶️. The relationship between Harley and Draven progresses rapidly, but perhaps a tad too quickly for my taste.

As for the plot twists, they were good! The one at the end shocked me at first, but when you consider what we know about The Seven's power it's actually not that shocking?

My final, perhaps crazy, thought is that I would almost prefer Harley to be with Ryder 😂.

Ember of Night left us hanging, but Shadow of Light picks up right where we left off. IN MISERY AND LEFT GASPING.

This book portrays so much more than a world of make believe, but shows that family is beyond blood, and you are the maker of your story and the holder of your strength.

Molly E Lee has joined the gang of must read YA authors.
Love Jennifer L Armentrout YA?
Classandra Clare and all the angels and demons?
Then this series is right for you.

Read if you like:
-upper YA steam-tactic scenes
-angels, demons, and the one person who can destroy it all (or save them)
-diverse characters
-side characters to keep you wanting more
-found family
-magic, creatures, demons, and more
-an MC to cheer for

TW- child abuse/neglect, topics of self harm and suicide, trauma, alcohol abuse.

Why I knocked a star:
Honestly I think it's me..... I am a 30 year old woman who started with SJM and is slowly learning that 18 year old MC characters may not feel relatable for me anymore and at times I can find their decision making frustrating.
So.... I will stick with it's me, and I hope you give Molly E Lee a chance if you love YA/NA fantasy.

Rating:

Reasons to read: the fact that it doesn't suffer the sophomore slump

Personal rating: *screams in fan-girl*

There are many structured ways to write a book review, but I will follow none of those. Prepare for rambles. Wear your hard hat, kids.

HUGE thanks to Entangled for just being the most awesome publisher out there. I mean, they're kind and quick to respond to emails. They approve me for every Edelweiss galley and for that, I tip my hat to you and I will try my darndest to give justice to such a stellar sequel to what is sure to be one of my favorite series of all time.

This is how you do a sequel.

I'm going to gloss over the cliffhanger ending because ERGH, but the rest of this book is perfection. Ember of Night was one of my favorite reads of 2020 because it had everything I love in YA: supped up hot boys, a snarky heroine, sisterly love, a unique story-line...but I'd be remiss if I didn't comment on Molly's superb writing skills and she really shines with the world-building in Shadow of Light.

Oh, and did I mention there's a lot more steam?

"I whimper, the consuming desire rising up in me, demanding I give him all of me and take all of him in return."

Good God in Heaven.

So, we've got Marid being a total butt and starting to possess little Ray's mind and that doesn't fly with Harley. She enlists the help of some old friends: Kazuki, Cassiel, and of course, Draven. To sever the bond between Ray and Marid, they have to go to Hell (Ather) where they meet, Wallace, their guide. This isn't just some jaunty romp, their goal is also to find Draven's brother, Ryder, who can also be an asset in defeating Marid.

I'm in total misery that things keep getting worse for poor Harley BUT the author sets up her books so perfectly that we already know what the next goals are going to be and I am in total awe of her genius story-telling. She's assembled a fellow-ship of well-rounded characters who bring their own unique personalities and skills to the table. They are the family that Harley needs and the family she's never had. The one thing that stuck out for me was Harley's thought about how she'd never had a girlfriend and having Wallace around truly makes her happy. I think these cast of characters are going to fight with all they have when the final battle comes and I truly hope they all survive.

Side note: I really thought someone was going to die at the end of this and I was going to riot if it was Cassiel. JS.

FAMILY TIES:
I love the intense love Harley has for Ray. They are all they have in the world (I mean Nathan is cool, but you can't top sisterly love) Although Draven may distract her with his hotness, she always returns to doing whatever she needs to do to protect her family.

THE ROMANCE:
Can I still say "I can't even?" or is that not a thing anymore? Anyway, I can't even with these two. They are magnetic and dripping with love and lust and ARGH. SO MUCH STEAM. That dancing scene got me fanning myself. I thought not long ago that my boyfriend cart was full, but I've made room for Draven. He can have the front seat. I'll buckle him in all neatly and kiss his pretty head. If he wants candy, I will buy him candy.

I'm always sooooo super hesitant when it comes to reading sequels and can count on one hand the amount of book two's that have actually lived up or surpassed their predecessors. I may have to use my other hand now because this sequel was *chef's kiss*

MY DISLIKES:
My only qualm is that Entangled didn't send me one of those awesome influencer boxes, but I forgive them.

Final thoughts: Don't sleep on this series. I will advocate it until my dying days.

Add me on Insta if you like pretty photos and more rambling

I LOVED this second book so much! It was even more exciting than the first one and the first one was pretty awesome!
It left off on a cliffhanger and I am still reeling, my mind not fully processing the cliffhanger it left off on!

*spoilers ahead from here on*
And all of the awesome information we got on Harley's heritage and who she is. I had a feeling she was the King of the Ather's DAUGHTER! What, what, what?!
I love Harley and I really relate to her character and who she is. I love how fiercely protective she is of her little sister, Ray. It's amazing.
I enjoy Ray and how cute she is. She's only 7 (almost 8) but she is so wise and smart that I sometimes forget that she is. And turns out she is a seer? How cool is that!!

I really love Draven and Harley's chemistry. And that they're mates! I thought it was cute how everytime someone was about to mention it they get cut off by him because he wanted to be the one to do it. It was also super cute how her dad, Rainier, got protective of her when he saw her and Draven kissing and embracing! Harley deserves a father who loves her and protects her, even though its 18 years late.

I know this is a fantasy book but the domestic abuse that Harley and Ray got from their "father" is very real and many children go through it everyday. It's heartbreaking to think about it and I hope that anyone who has gone through it or is currently and reads this book...that Harley and Ray given them strength and courage. You are not alone!

I didn't particularly like Wallace at first... I thought she was pretty rude to Harley, but I can tell her and Harley can relate a lot and are similar in that they don't want people to pity them and they don't take well to affection from people they don't trust and it's really hard for them to trust people.
So I started to really dig their friendship and Wallace grew on me.
Also, one thing I love about this series is the "chosen family" that Harley and Ray have. I love that vibe in a book and his definitely has it!

Even though I got this book on it's release day I'm glad I waited until now to read it because the third book is coming out in a couple of weeks so I don't have to wait too long to find out what happens next! But these couple of weeks are going to be hard!

Omigod, this book! Shadow of Light is seriously even more enjoyable than the first book, Ember of Night!

I won't say too much as it'll spoil the entire plot of Ember of Night, but I will say...this book has plenty of action, witty humor, romance, and twists and turns that you might end up getting whiplash (and that flipping epilogue again...damn!), so hold onto your seat! It's quickly paced and written in such a way that makes you want to keep turning the page.

I loved the growth of some familiar characters and some newly introduced ones (I absolutely love Wrath!) and the relationships that were further built upon from book one. This book definitely held up well as a second-in-a-series story with no lull in the plot...no middle book syndrome here! I am greatly looking forward to "Spark of Ash"!

If you loved Ember of Night, I highly recommend you continue the series and read Shadow of Light!

“I determine it. From here on out, I decide my worth. If any wine doesn’t like it, they can go to fucking hell.”

Shadow of light is the perfect sequel to Ember of night. Filled with so much action, a sweet sweet romance, a beautiful relationship between sisters and a thrilling quest through hell that had me at the edge of my seat. It took me a second to get into it but once I did, wow, oh wow! It was absolutely addictive. I just couldn’t stop. Harleys character development was inspiring, her sense of humor was nothing but perfect. Draven? Well, all I can say is Swoon. The newly introduced characters were fantastic. That twist at the end though. Seriously, why?? Be prepared for a cliffy.

“Together,” I say, what is quickly becoming our mantra, despite the differences we’ve had, the struggles. Together we can face anything.”

I am loving this series. It's got just the right of snarky heroine with sob-story background, adorable sibling, and action and adventure to satisfy any demonic love story craving.
Because this is a love story. Harley and Draven are very much in the overflowing with hormones stage of their relationship, and this book does have sexual content. I know there are purists out there that don't want this in YA (and being a mum I can understand those reasons), but they straight up murdered people in the last book. Like, if you're worried teens are going to emulate or find things normalised through their reading, surely sex is a better alternative than stabbing people. And it made them seem more real to me anyway. If they've got this all-consuming, love-of-their-life type dating affair going on, it's a natural progression that at some point they get naked together. And be honest: she's the Antichrist. I don't think waiting until marriage was ever going to be a top priority.
There's a great cast of characters, so much action, and the reveals keep coming. It does end on another cliff-hanger, so be forewarned that you'll be hooked and need the next book handy.

{𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐈 𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖}⁣ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5⁣⁣
SHADOW OF LIGHT is a fantastic continuation of Harley and Draven’s story. Ember of Night ended on quite a tense note, and this book pick up immediately where that one left off. Things are still quite tense for our beloved Draven and Harley, though at least Harley is finally coming into her own with her powers and who she is. The romance continues to be my favorite aspect of this series, though Harley’s relationship with her sister comes in at a very close second. ⁣
⁣⁣
Bottom line — fast-paced, romantic, and so completely addictive, SHADOW OF LIGHT will hook you from the first page until the last. 5 brilliant stars, and I can’t wait to see what book 3 has in store for these characters.

Shadow of Light is the second book in Molly E. Lee’s Ember of Night series. The series focuses on protagonist Harley Ward who becomes the hero of her own story after she’s thrust into a world full of demons and more that she never knew existed. Harley who has spent most of her life as her father’s punching bag has always had to fight to survive. But the events of Ember of Night takes all of that to a new level. With the help of Draven, a boy who mysteriously appears and is more than he seems, and a warlock with powers galore, Harley fights off demons trying to kill her and a Greater Demon who wants her to open the Ather gates.

Shadow of Light picks up before the final chapter and epilogue of Ember of Night. Unlike the rest of the book, the prologue is told from Draven’s POV. I personally don’t think this is a standalone story, though some key events from Ember of Night are mentioned. Shadow of Light finds the most important person in Harley’s life, her eight-year-old sister Ray being possessed by Greater Demon Marid in a quest to get Harley to let him out of the Ather, so he can take over the world. Again with the help of Warlock Kazuki, Harley, Draven, Ray, Draven’s best friend and brother in arms Cassiel aka the Angel of Death make the dangerous journey to the Ather to break Marid’s hold on Ray and finish him off for good. Along the way, they make new friends, get into some fights and Harley discovers who or what she really is and takes her rightful place. Sadly, a girl who has the power to destroy the world just can’t be happy and content. Shadow of Light ends with an amazing cliffhanger that at least I didn’t see coming.

Molly has once again written an amazing story full of surprises, twists, and turns that you won’t see coming. The fight scenes are good. There are memories and mentions of the physical abuse Harley endured. There is also a consensual encounter between Harley and Draven. I am definitely looking forward to reading the next book Spark of Ash.

You know what I love most about YA? All of the emotion. The age range of typical characters in the YA genre are at the age where they feel everything so strongly. Everything is intense and tension is high. At the heart of this, that was what I was feeling and I loved it!

Picking up right where Ember of Night left off, we are thrown pretty much right back into the action of the last book. And in Shadow of Light, stakes are higher! We learned so many things at the end of the previous book and we continue to ride that explosive train all through the sequel. We get more badass Harley, more swoon-worthy Draven and lots more of sweet, sweet Ray (and quite a bit of not-so-sweet Ray… you’ll see).

Harley is the key to opening the gates of Hell, quite literally. And with that bit of truth bestowed on her, what’s a girl to do? She has just saved the boy she’s falling in love with from a fate worse than death and the adventure is only beginning.

Now, her lovable little sister is freaking her the hell out… that is of course, when a demon begins possessing her at his own whim and fancy. Seriously, the Exorcist is the scariest thing I have ever seen or read and this gave me total vibes. Yikes!! Now, Harley, Draven, Ray and a whole cast of others must travel realms to find answers, searching for Draven’s long lost twin brother in the process.

This book was wholly darker than Ember of Night, in more ways than one and I loved every single second of it. I am still completely reeling from the last line of this book and dying for Lee’s third book!

Update 12/23/21: I've officially finished the book so my mini review will be updated to reflect that. It may be a couple days though because THAT ENDING HAS ME SHOOKEN!! THE CHILDREN ARE NOT ALRIGHT.

Update: 2/8/22:

This book...I am shook.

The world that the author created by bending the ideas we have about the Devil and Hell and the Antichrist is absolutely amazing and something I can't even begin to put into words.

Then there's the characters, Harley and Draven. They are amazing. They're so realistic and imperfect and have flaws and aren't afraid to acknowledge them. They're probably the two most bad*** characters I've ever met. The found family is incredible and the love they have for their siblings is awe-inspiring.

My only criticism is that the book ended on a cliffhanger and the author is making us wait until May to resolve it. Also, this book was quite fast paced and chapters would end in one location and then open in another and while it didn't affect the book, it was a bit confusing since locations would change so quickly.

😈 Firstly, thank you to Entangled Teen with providing me with an E-ARC. This in no way affects my review
😈 If you haven't read "Ember of Night" yet, you should probably do that.
😈Lusro and the cave are a vibe
😈 The sexual tension is strong with this one
😈 Strong, imperfect heroine and love interest.
😈 This book is also fast paced, the chapter will end in one location and then the next one will start in another. It was a little jarring at first but it didn't hurt the story.

Synopsis: I just saved the boy I’m falling for from a gruesome death by a demon.

Review: Overall, I really loved this book as well! I thought it was a well done sequel and it held its own with its own story and issues separate from the first book but still connected. The character development was sound, I loved the new characters, I loved all the twists and turns, and I enjoyed the world building. The book also had a strong plot and I enjoyed the ride. I also highly enjoyed having the triggers in the front of the book.

However, I did think that some of the book was repetitive in the plot. I felt like the same conflict resolution conflict resolution rhythm repeated a few times in the book and it was a bit dull in the middle and a little at the end. The book also kind of did the same thing with the romance aspects. The book’s pacing also slowed down in the center and a little towards the end.

Verdict: It was great! Loved it!

Everything I loved about EMBER OF NIGHT I loved about SHADOW OF LIGHT, and frankly, everything I love about YA fantasy in general. SHADOW OF LIGHT is fearless, bold, edgy and explosive, and adventure with characters you can't help but adore and a plot that keeps you turning pages. I listened to the audiobook in tandem with the eARC and it was just such a delight. Harley's character development is arguably the strongest part of this book. I loved seeing her newfound confidence as she travels to the depths of hell to keep her sister safe from a vengeful demon. Watching her journey has truly been a wonderful experience and it really warmed my heart to see her claim her power and accepting the love of those around her. I loved the romance and the chemistry between Harley and Draven. This romance is the stuff of favorite OTPs and was very sweet to watch develop throughout this book. I still love Harley's love for her sister. All the relationships, familial, romantic, and platonic, were all so well-formed. Learning more about the Seven and who Harley really is was also fascinated, and we have very high stakes that propel the plot perfectly forward. It's a fun read, to be sure and didn't lag at all. From beginning to end, it hooked me, and thus earned a coveted 5 stars. So excited to continue with SPARK OF ASH soon!

“I’ve never been worthy of you. But I’ll stand with you. For as long as you’ll let me. I love your scars, your darkness, your rage. I love every piece of you…”

Just like Ember of Night, I loved Shadow of Light and after that cliffhanger, I will unabashedly beg for Book 3. Draven is devoted to Harley and I’m devoted to Draven.

Read if you love Constantine Vibes, the Winter Soldier, YA fantasy, Chosen One Trope, Angels & Demons, Soulmates.

This novel continued on from where the first novel left off. And what an epic adventure it was. I really enjoyed the 'found family' with the addition of new characters. I did find myself skim reading in some sections as Harley's thoughts were a bit to in-depth at times.

Even better than book 1! The author has really shined in this sequel and the story has surpassed my expectations! Many sequels fall victim to the dreaded book 2 lull but not this!! I must continue STAT with book 3!

Totally enjoying book #1 and jumping into book #2 this one took us right into the Aether or hell as we know it. As Harleys sister needs some help so we meet so many new characters who I fell in love with. Draven and Harley's relationship progresses so much as they are constantly challenged. Then they are pretty much led to her father who has been trapped there for a millennia or a long time idk. We learn a lot in this book which will help our quest in book #3. Then it ends on a wtf cliffhanger when we were all happy in WITSEC living the farmers life.

The second installment of Ember of Night is fast-paced, captivating, and a wild ride as Molly E. Lee takes us through the different realms of Hell, otherwise known as Ather. Shadow of light provides action-packed scenes, steamy romance, vivid world-building, and uncovered truths that will have you flipping through those pages.

Shadow of light begins right where Ember of Night left off. Just when Harley believed destiny was done with her, Marid possesses Ray in order to torment her. Now, she has to venture down to Ather in order to save her sister and break the tether. However, Harley won’t be alone as Draven, Ray, Kazuki, Cassiel, and other new characters join her on this journey.

The reintroduction of old and new characters is a great addition to the story. As they embark on their journey, you learn more about these characters and eventually grow to love them as I did. The Shadow of Light gang has to be one of my new favorite found families! Kazuki is officially my favorite “dark warlock.” He has a great sense of humor and a kind of sassy personality. I mean what’s not to love?! Cassiel, the angel of death, is the type of loyal, caring, and protective brother/friend everyone would want! Then, there’s Ray! She’s such an adorable, strong, and wise young lady. She’s just a ray of sunshine throughout this whole book! (pun not intended 😂) You just want to whisk her away from all terrible situations. I love her so much, not to mention that she enjoys her fries better with ranch! We’re officially besties!🥰

The direction in which Molly E Lee took this novel was just perfect! As the characters venture through Ather, you are introduced to new realms such as Lurso. Each realm has a unique culture, society, and way of life that is depicted with such vivid imagery you almost feel as if you are right there with them. I was very fascinated with the different realms, and the author depicts Hell in a way never seen before.

Throughout the course of book one and this novel, you really get to see Harley grow as an individual. She finally realizes her self-worth and that she shouldn’t let others determine who she is, so because she becomes a stronger and better person. The chapter in which Harley realizes is so empowering and impactful that I was like “ Yes, you go girl!” From that point on, I was cheering her on. However, not only do you get to see Harley find her self-worth, but this chapter also makes you realize your own. Molly E. Lee conveys the message of no matter how many battle scars you have or no matter what you’ve been through and survived you are enough. You shouldn’t let others or yourself diminish your self-worth. This message will be forever seared in my mind.

Lastly, we can’t forget about romance! The heat is turned up on the romance! Harley and Draven are just perfect for each other. They are both so protective and always trying to save one another. Draven is such a huge support system for Harley which I love. I will always love them with my whole heart!🥰

The last thing is the ending. If you look for the foreshadowing, you’ll find it; thus, there will be no surprises when things are revealed at the end. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it! There’s something about having your predictions confirmed that is just so satisfying! I have never been more grateful to have the arc of the third book! I can’t wait to see the finale of this amazing series! Overall, Shadow of Light is a page-turning read that did not suffer from second book syndrome. It was filled with funny humor, romance, dangers, secrets, and adventure which had me hooked and intrigued from beginning to end!

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this second installment of Ember The Night series, so when I got emailed the ARC book I practically screamed with excitement, I couldn't wait to dive into this awesome world again.

𝙏𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙 𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙮 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚........𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙮𝙤𝙪."

Shadow of Light carries straight off from where we was left in Book 1, After Harley saves Draven from death,  he tells her she is the key to opening the gates to hell. Harley refuses to even think that she is a key for opening hell, until her little sister Ray is taken over by Marid, yes the Marid that's been haunting and tormenting Ray in Book 1. Well for Harley this changes everything because she will go to the end of the earth, and into hell to stop Marid from possessing her. This was a hair-raising and breathtaking adventure. You just never know what was around the corner, as our favourite characters take a trip to hell, as Harley finds out the only way to break the tether between Marid and Ray and to stop his revenge whenever he wants. Is to enter hell itself.

"𝙃𝙖𝙡𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙛𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙄 𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙙. 𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚. 𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣𝙩 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪."

Harley we see grow into her powers so much in this book, she is an absolutely wicked character I love her kickass attitude and her sarcasm is fantastic haha. The love and protectiveness she has for Ray. Draven and Harley baiter and sense of humour is amazing, I was laughing out loud at some of their scenes and it was so brilliant. Draven has always been my favourite character. I absolutely love him, and his and Harley relationship grows and it is so adorable.

We meet old and some new characters in the shadow of light. This second book has everything, action, romance, and a thrilling exciting adventure, and the ending just had me screaming, noooooo you can't leave it there lol. You won't ever want  it to end. This is one of my favourite series of the year and I am so excited for Spark of Ash. The third installment. Molly has written this series so well, you can't help but fall in love with the characters, I can't recommend this series enough. You wont regret it and it will stay with you for a very long time. Bring on Book 3.
