The Hathaways #1

A Season for Love: 2-in-1

Rate this book
Two of Lisa Kleypas's beloved novels, now available in one volume, A Season for Love.

In WALLFLOWER CHRISTMAS, Rafe Bowman comes to London for an arranged marriage with the perfect aristocratic bride. But before the courtship can begin, Rafe needs to learn the rules of London society. And when four former Wallflowers try to make him into a gentleman, their plans go wildly astray. Winning a bride turns out to be more complicated than Rafe Bowman anticipated, as Christmas works in the most unexpected ways... and changes the most cynical hearts.

In MINE TILL MIDNIGHT, Amelia Hathaway is the oldest of four sisters and has only one brother to drive her mad. They live a genteel but impoverished life until they come into an unexpected inheritance. Suddenly, they have a title, a small fortune, and a ramshackle estate in Hampshire. But they're completely unprepared for an upper-class life. Amelia does her best to rein in her colorful and unmanageable siblings to match society's expectations. Until the mysterious, extremely wealthy half-Gypsy Cam Rohan appears. Cam wants to leave his civilized existence and return to his roots. The irresistible attraction between Amelia and the exotically handsome Cam poses a huge problem for both of them—their goals and lifestyles are incompatible. However, as Amelia deals with a multitude of problems, including trying to save her alcoholic brother, Leo, from ruin, she finds herself turning to Cam Rohan, whose friendship turns into a passion that neither of them can deny...

I have just read A Wallflower Christmas- this was a reread in the spirit of the season. 3.5🌟 for this first book in this collection.

I enjoyed Rafe and Lillian. I’m a sucker for a good story about falling for your intended’s companion. I wish we got more of them. This was a novella and it felt like a lot of the time was spent as a reunion/ where are they now catch up after the initial Wallflower series ended.

I will update this review in the future when I reread Mine Til Midnight- I can’t wait to see Cam again!😍

This is the love story of the oldest misfit Sister in the Hathaway Clan.
Amelia Hathaway was the mother hen of the clan. Once her parents died. Father of a sudden heart attack & mother of a broken heart due to the death of her beloved husband just months after his death. When the family solicitor informs the Hathaway’s, they have come into an unexpected inheritance. Suddenly, they are now titled, have a tiny fortune, & a decrepit estate in the Hampshire. Ramsey Estate needs serious repairs &
Amelia believes this is a good move. The Hathaway clan has gone thru many sorrows in recent years. Scarlet Fever almost took the life of two of Amelia’s siblings. The heir Leo & Winifred 2nd oldest sister. Unfortunately, it did take the life of Leo’s love Laura. Which has now made Leo mental, irresponsible & suicidal. Will Leo be the 4th Lord Ramsey’s to die prematurely? On top of that worry on Amelia’s mind, she has to deal with Laura haunting the clan. Leo, doing everything he can to kill & loss the funds to repair the estate. Then she has to deal with her 2nd oldest sister Winnifred. While the two younger girls Poppy & Beatrix should be thinking about balls, season & fashion. She needs to watch her pennies with her brother’s wasteful spending that should be flowing into the repairs of the estate. Amelia knows that the Hathaway clan is an unmanageable bunch for society's expectations. Are unprepared for an upper-class lifestyle.
While getting the help of her families devoted Romy Merripen like an adopted brother strong, tall & protective of the Hathaway women (Romy tribe) Merripen whose life was saved by the Lord Hathaway & wife over a decade ago.
He is out with Lady Amelia to find her drunkard brother Leo. On their discovery from tavern, brothel & gambling house. They have been directed to go find Lord Ramsey @ higher class gambling house ran by St. Vincent; who’s house manager, is stopping a brawl w/ 2 Lords. The mysterious, extremely wealthy half-Gypsy Cam Rohan. Cam’s story is that he wants to leave his civilized existence & return to his roots. Find out what his tattoo represents to him, his tribe & find out if he has any relatives.
Though when he meets Lady Amelia there is an irresistible attraction between Amelia & the exotically handsome Cam which poses a huge problem for both. Since their goals & lifestyles different. Lady Amelia deals with a multitude of problems, trying to save her alcoholic brother, an Ex who happens to come back into her life. None of the men currently in her life Don't trust Mr. Frost. She finds herself being saved or turning to Cam Rohan, whose friendship turns into a passion that neither of them can deny... Do they fight for their burning desires or do the follow what society expects? Read their story.

I thoroughly enjoy the Hathaway family! Except for Leo. His behavior was horrid. Did we need the orgy scene! I think Not!
Funny how the Gypsies that invade the Hathaway's lives are the gentlemen & civilized one! Over the educated Lord. That said Leo is a delight & funny in the second book. Winnifred & Merripen's love story. Do want to know what happens w/ him & Ms. Marks? I was thrilled that Amelia was finally getting someone to love & care for her. She definitely was the mother hen. But those Romy men! Strong on the outside & sensitive & loving on the inside. I want that man!

3 stars for A Wallflower Christmas
4 stars for Mine Til Midnight

A Season For Love is two previously published Lisa Kleypas’ novels - A Wallflower Christmas and Mine Til Midnight. Thank you @smpromance for my gifted copy.

A Wallflower Christmas is about Rafe (his sisters were the MC of previous books) who travels to England to marry Natalie. If he does so, his father will give him part of the family business. When he first arrives, he meets Natalie’s cousin, Hannah, who is serving as her chaperone.

What I liked: It’s a quick Christmas theme story with an enemies to lovers/instant attraction angle.

There’s a few scenes where you catch up with characters who must be in the other books that I think fans of Kleypas will enjoy.

What didn’t work for me: I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had read the previous Wallflower novels. You get some background in this one but I didn’t feel connected to the characters.

Natalie didn’t work as Hannah’s rival for Rafe’s affection; mainly because she comes across as vapid, spoiled, and with no actual spark towards Rafe.

Mine Til Midnight is about the Hathaway family (the Wallflowers make an appearance). Their brother has unexpectedly gained a title and an estate but is grieving the death of his fiancé. To escape the temptations of London, the family moves to the rundown abandoned estate. Amelia is drawn to Cam, who happens to be of Romani descent, and is a friend of their new neighbors.

What I liked: for me, this is the stronger of the two stories. The characters are more developed with backstories and side plots - I will be reading Win and Merripen’s story. I felt Amelia and Cam had more passion than Hannah and Rafe.

The characters have real issues to work through - Leo’s grief, Amelia doesn’t want to marry, Cam’s desire to find his tribe, and Beatrix blacking out and stealing things.

What didn’t work for me: I know this is on purpose, but there were a few open storylines that I want resolved.

There’s a subplot with a villain that didn’t seem entirely necessary. There’s a slight supernatural element that isn’t fully explained.

Who should read it: Historical romance fans looking for a new to them series - start with Mine Til Midnight (it’s steamy though). The MC instant attraction is built on with actual interactions and conversations.

Okay, so I'm not going to rate this one however many stars. I'm just going to tell my thoughts.
This book was a birthday present for me from someone who knows I love to read. The book had two stories in them and while they, themselves were good stories, I stumbled across a lot that I didn't really care for.
I'm not going to preface this review with anything other than this is a review from the perspective of a Christian girl. As much as I enjoyed the stories, I probably will not read it again. There was just too much I didn't like. There were countless bedroom scenes that I could tell were graphic. I had to skip most of the last part of "Mine till Midnight" and had to skip several other scenes in the book. There were a lot. O.O As a young girl trying to protect her innocence and virtue in the Lord, I would not recommend this novel to other girls who are doing the same.
I didn't like how Rafe and Hannah's relationship seemed sorely based on lust and how they made one another feel. There weren't any character qualities that attracted them to one another, nothing but pure love-high feelings. It does not encourage girls who read it to wait for their partner based off of character qualities, faith, goals in life, etc. There was a ghost who haunted one of the characters in "Mine Till Midnight" and, again as a Christian girl, I do not believe in ghosts nor do I feel that a Christian girl should read about them in this context because it goes against what Scripture says. And one of the characters through the book is quoted saying "Marriage is a female invention." I have a serious problem with this because marriage was created and instituted by God Himself in the beginning and, again, phrases like this go against what God says in the Bible.
All in all, the stories themselves were enjoyable. The author has a fantastic writing style, she really does a good job with the language of the day and she has a very warm and inviting style. She speaks of nature a lot, too, and that was enjoyable for me.

Two books in one.

A Wallflower Christmas
An excellent return to the Wallflowers and Stony Cross Park. I loved this addition to the Wallflowers series pairing Rafe Bowman and Hannah Appleton. Each is enchanting in their own way, interacting with each other and with the Wallflowers 'sisters.' Humor and spice and everything nice all rolled up together.

Mine Till Midnight
I've read this before and enjoyed reading it again very much. Ameila and Cam and the workings of fate. More humor sprinkled into a well written story of love, loss, good luck and bad.

Both are excellent.

This book has 2 separate stories. I only read the first and was not interested in reading the secound. This was my first read by Lisa Keypas and while she is a great writer I felt character development was lacking and am not willing to read all the series to better understand the characters in her stories. This was a book club read for December and an open door romance.

A Wallflower book and one from the Hathaways series. Can't go wrong with these! The brother of the Bowman sisters (two of the beloved Wallflowers) gets his own tale and the Hathaways kicks off with a cross over to the employee of Sebastian Lord St Vincent and childhood friend of Lord St Vincent's bride Evie Jenner. Love love love all these characters and their book world.

This is the first book I have ever read by Lisa Kleypas. Her men are strong, and a bit overwhelming, while her women are tough and usually on their own. They fall in love, overcome obstacles, and end up happy. Always a good thing. I think I need a couple more of her stories before I can make a real decision on how I feel about her books.

This review is for the entire series.

If you get this 2-in-1 edition please note that the first story is actually the fourth book from her previous series. So you may want to skip it like I did. I’m reading the previous series now and will read it last. The two series are based in the same universe so you may want to read the previous one (The Wallflowers) before, as some of the characters make cameos, but it isn’t necessary.

This series follows a family of four siblings (a older brother and three sisters) whose parents have died a couple years before. Unexpectedly through a quick series of death the brother inherits a title (that is possibly cursed) and the whole family suddenly go from being middle class to members of the landed gentry. The brother however has become an alcoholic and a rake. A year before his fiancée died in his arms from scarlet fever which he caught and almost died from. When he lay in bed dying he was happy to know he would join her, however, in the end he survived and ever since he has lost himself to the drink. The eldest sister, who has taken it upon herself to be the parent figure, decides to move the family to the estate they’ve inherited to remove their brother from the temptations of London in hopes of saving him from drinking himself to death. While there she runs into a handsome Roma man she had a chance encounters with back in London. And sparks fly 😉

Each book is the love story of a different sibling and they’re all great! You’ll completely fall in love with family and their fish out of water antics with their new lives as part of the peerage. I’m not sure which is my favourite but I think it’s a tie between the
brother’s and and the youngest sister’s.
I highly recommend these books. They’re a good example of when you shouldn’t judge a book by the cover (the covers for the single books are so trashy looking! IMHO) and f*ck the stigma against reading paperback romances.
