This epic young adult dragon fantasy includes the three exciting novels in the Dragonspawn Trilogy: Dragonspawn Dragon Oracle Dragon Deep
Queen of the Dragons Ava Richardson invites you to immerse yourself in a dragon-filled world with epic magic, fearless heroes, and, at its heart, the deep bond between dragon and rider.
Ava Richardson writes epic page-turning Young Adult Fantasy books. She creates lovable characters and drops them into intricate worlds that are barely contained within your eReader. Ava has written 21 YA dragon fantasy series, including her bestselling series Return of the Darkening and her recent series, Destia's Dragon Shifter War.
She grew up on a steady diet of fantasy and science fiction books handed down from her two big brothers – and despite being dog-eared and missing pages, she loved escaping into the magical worlds that those authors created. Her favorites were the ones about dragons; where they’d swoop, dive and soar through the skies of these enchanted lands.
I've been enjoying many of Ava Richardson's books so far, but the Dragonspawn trilogy was a disappointment for me.
Everything felt surface level, to the point of feeling shallow, and almost nothing is explained. A number of dragon species are mentioned and named, but aside from Nightsoul's, the books never go into detail on how big or small these dragons are, or what else they are capable of.
The magic system is interesting and the concept of using memories as fuel for said magic is original, but the story never delves into it, and sadly, the same applies to the lore and characters. The lore had potential, but in the end there was barely anything to it, and as a result, the world of Pothena felt so small and barely lived in.
As for the characters, while there is some development and heart-wrenching sacrifices in there, it was either too superficial, or didn't feel earned. Take our main protagonist, Dez, for example. Throughout the first book her and Nightsoul are despised for who they are and where they come from, yet by the end of said book, after performing one good deed, everything is suddenly forgiven and Dez is immediately risen to one of the highest ranks of the Rebellion in charge of her own squad, despite having no leadership experience prior.
Then in book two, after a few unfortunate encounters and tragedies, she is immediately nominated as the new Leader of the Rebellion. Sure she had to go through a political campaign and voting process first, but it never felt earned regardless. Add that on top of Dez's constant mood swings (one minute she's a crying wreck constantly feeling sorry for herself, the next she's a tough, no-nonsense leader. I get it, she's a teenager in the midst of a terrible war that will decide the fate of the world, but it was still unpleasant to read), the rushed romance between her and Saad, and the rather obscure relationships between her, her Aunt Lula and her foster brothers, everything about Dez's character rubbed me the wrong way, and it made it hard for me to care or sympathize with her and her cause.
Add all of that on top of terrible rushed writing and pacing, poor execution, grammar issues that gets worse and worse with each entry, and a rather lame and lackluster villain in the form of the Spirit King, and this trilogy just didn't do it for me. As of now I consider it one of Ava Richardson's weaker stories, and I hate saying that because I really wanted to love this one.
I'll probably give it another chance down the line, maybe I'm going through a mood or burnout and that's another reason why I didn't enjoy the trilogy as much as others, but until then this is how I feel about it.
Rollercoaster of a ride from start to finish, fighting against self doubt and the daunting task of saving the world and everyone she loves without loosing herself. You find yourself worrying with her and cheering for the courage needed to make the right choice.
This story kept me scared but wanting more. The battles were terrible and not something I would normally read . The characters were interesting. The author is amazing. Her imagination is beyond compare. I did enjoy reading and am thankful for a peaceful, good ending.
I loved this series. It was quite well written. The characters became almost real and found myself eager to find out what came next. I will look for the author again.
A short and quick read for anyone interested in dragons. Quick to grab my interest and well paced throughout. Although struggled with the 3rd one as there was some of turmoil for her and a lot of self introspection that sometimes makes me lose interest.
It’s rare I find fantasy novels I enjoy as much as I do the “big” name authors. I can legitimately recommend this fantasy series. Likable characters & war driven plot. War? Sometime personal & sometime individual, but the end of the plot is positive is a win in my book.
