Two weeks into the Third World War, the Warsaw Pact has won the Battle of Bremen. NATO makes ready for a last stand on the Weser. As a Soviet army prepares to invade the Netherlands, the battered Dutch I Corps redeploys to the frontier. Meanwhile, the Dutch government contemplates enemy occupation for the second time in the 20th century. Across the Netherlands the government, the military, and Dutch people rally to the defense of the nation.
I enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an exciting and well written story. William Stroock is truly the master of the alternative history genre. This novel is a stand alone story in the author's epic series on a "what if" NATO/Warsaw Pact war in 1990. This book features what might have occurred in NORTHAG in the early part of a potential WW3 before NATO could bring its full power to bear. This novel is unique in that it covers how this part of the war might have played out in the Netherlands. Stroock weaves an exciting story involving Dutch leaders, military, police and civilians and how they might have faced a possible Soviet invasion of their country. The author shows incredible research of his subject matter. In reading the book he places the reader in the Netherlands. The detail on the Netherlands, its customs, its political systems and military is phenomenal. I'm also a retired combat veteran and the battle sequences are tense and thrilling. Stroock's detailed description of battle places the reader in the middle of combat. The author places the reader in a mechanized clash or in the thick of a firefight. I recommend that you read Stroock's entire series and the stand alone stories. If you enjoy alternative history or military action novels than you must read William Stroock's books.
I've enjoyed reading the series. It's gotten kind of predictable but quite enjoyable at the same time. I'm glad that I read the stories, just for the entertainment value.
Stroock does a good job of giving us heroes, in the house of everyday people who step into unprecedented circumstances. I will always remember, "Oley, oley, oley oley, 5 1, 5 1." Heroes.
The one thing that was hard for me to take in was the absolute ineffectiveness of Soviet soldiers, when dealing with civilian resistance. I would normally bet on the Spetznaz when dealing with adversaries, but that is not the case in any of Stroock's books. That spent stop it from being a fun story, with some pretty interesting characters. I'm very glad that didn't happen in real life.
3/5. This book should have been one of the first to read after the initial volume covering the start of the war in the Fulda Gap and on the North German Plain. Unfortunately, THAT book doesn’t even exist. The action in this book deals with the Dutch army in Germany fighting to keep Soviet ground forces from reaching and entering the Netherlands. At the same time, it addresses Russian bombing and special operations at key locations in Holland. Somehow, despite the priority of air support going to the simultaneous battle along the Weser River, planes and helicopters keep showing-up to support the Dutch. The book never explains how so many air assets are in the Netherlands. Like all the books in the series, this one desperately needed maps to be able to follow along with the action and see how the various parts related to the whole. This book, like the entire series, suffers greatly from the frustratingly frequent use of incorrect and misspelled words.
Interesting fictional account of the Cold War going hot in the late 80s
I enjoyed the book but it wasn't as good as Team Yankee or Red Storm Rising. It's s collection of individual stories of different characters from policemen to the Prime Minister. Ultimately a good ending with better later chapters. There was little context to provide an overview of what was going on as it concentrated on only the Dutch. Good story
The story was junk it throws you into a new conflict area in the alternate timeline with no real show of when it happened only later do you realized it was around the beginning of the war. Then the lack of commentary from other countries like in previous novels was doula has was given second hand e stead of interesting dialog to get a p,use of how people where reacting to the war. In the end this was wrist book in the series.
Really enjoying this series as you can see by how quickly I am going through the books. An early one in the series but written later and you can see how the author became better at his craft.
