FROM EXCITING AUTHOR OF LGBTQIA ROMANCE S. J. COLES

What happens when the person you can’t get out of your head also happens to be the number one suspect in your murder investigation?

Derek Benson, CEO of Benson Industries, is found dead in his office at a time when everyone in the building, including him, should have been at an important meeting about the company’s future. Conveniently for the killer, the security footage from the time of the murder has vanished.

None of this fazes FBI Agent James Solomon. James knows himself, his job and how to set aside his ongoing personal problems to get the job done, even when the investigation is in a small-town backwater like Winton.

There’s just one problem—the intriguing form of young lab technician Leo Hannah, an employee of Benson Industries and a key witness, who appears to know more than he’s admitting to.

As the investigation progresses, James finds that his previously steadfast ability to separate personal from professional becomes increasingly unreliable. Can he get his head I the game before he compromises the investigation and his future career?

This book begins with a murder and it moves quickly! FBI Agent James Solomon arrives to interview suspects at Benson industries. The CEO has been found dead by the janitor and there are a lot of staff to interview.

One staff person, in particular, stands out to James for potentially the wrong reasons. While out on a fresh air break, he meets Leo Hannah. Leo is chatty and a little peculiar, but James is drawn to him. Leo has a lot of gossip and theories about the murder but nothing that really holds water.

Still recovering from the recent end of a long-term relationship, James finds himself intrigued by Leo. This is when things get tangled in the most interesting of ways. Leo becomes a suspect in the case…. but not before James has already spent a night with Leo.

Leo’s life isn’t quite what he’s led James to believe, but then, if you just leave things out… are you being deceptive? There are some significant twists and turns in this. Coles has packed a lot into this, and it doesn’t feel overstuffed with action. The pacing is excellent, and the plot unfolds quite naturally.

This is a short novella, but I loved it. It was engaging from the very beginning which is often difficult to do with a shorter piece. S.J. Coles is a master of characterization and pulls off fully rounded, intriguing characters right from the start. There’s an ease of intimacy with these characters that made me feel as though I’d been reading about them for longer than I had. James makes some very human mistakes and he’s very relatable.

If you enjoy reading solid crime/ mystery, then this won’t disappoint!

For me this was a whole lotta story packed into too short of a page count. A longer story could have had more actual detective work, more of a backstory to James and his ex, Leo and his family, and Leo and Benson Industries. As it was, everything was explained and tied up at the end and left me reeling a little bit. I enjoyed James and Leo together but couldn't really see the reason for their connection in the little bit they interacted. Why did Leo somehow "get" James immediately upon meeting him? More time spent with them, and with the other characters in the story to flesh out the mystery, would have been welcome. Thankfully the ending, for what had preceded it in the story, was appropriate. If there had been grand gestures and a HEA I would have smacked somebody.

Could FBI agent James Solomon trust his gut on this one?
There had been a murder, the CEO of Benson industries Derek Benson had been found dead in his office. There was so many people in the building at the time of the murder but funnily enough the security footage had vanished so it was up to the FBI to follow the clues to find out who the murderer was. As FBI agent James Solomon was taking a break outside, a gorgeous young man came out to have a cigarette break. James was instantly attracted to him but knew he was there to do a job. But the lab technician Leo Hannah was a strange intriguing young man that had information that nobody else was telling him. Why did he trust him??? was it his attraction to him or was he taking this boy at face value???
Lab technician Leo Hannah was a bit of a loner but his personality was so addictive he seemed so full of life. And he was attracted to James straightaway. But would anything ever happened between them while this case was going on??
When they meet outside of the interview, they just seem to click and James can’t seem to stay away from him and ends up spending the night but then the very next day Leo becomes a suspect. What has James done?? Will he trust Leo?? has he just thrown his career away????
This is really good it was quite intriguing actually because I didn’t have a clue who the murderer was. But the chemistry and passion between Leo and James was just electric as soon as they were together sparks just flew. It was nice that they can talk and Leo was just the person that James needed as he is going through family issues.
I really like these two and I can see me reading this book again. This is the second book I have read by SJ Cole and I must say I can’t wait till the next book.

Any other time, FBI Agent James Solomon is all business. Until he meets a man he can’t get out of his head. He doesn’t have time for dalliances, he has a murder to investigate. But will he be able to keep Leo out of his head long enough to find the culprit?

James Solomon is good at his job and it appears that he even enjoys what he does. He’s precise and observant, picking up on things that others might miss. He’s also pretty fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the early interactions between him and his partner, Lisa Gibson. They worked well together and seemed to almost feed off each other’s strong points. So, when, approximately halfway through the book, James does something incredibly stupid, I had to pause for a moment. I found it a bit out of character for someone so dedicated to his job, so good at it that a higher-ranking agent points out how good he is, to do something that would potentially end his career. The temptation to do what he did made complete sense. But to act on it? That really threw me out of the story. Thankfully, I was engaged enough in the mystery to put James’ poor choices aside long enough to finish the story.

That aside, the mystery was solid and although you have an idea of who committed the act early on, their reasonings for it were a surprise. I also liked James, despite his bad choices. His calls with his sister were sweet, even if he wasn’t prepared to fully engage her when she called. Also, the strained relationship with his father added a bit of humanity to his character that gave me reason to empathize with him. I’d really enjoy a sequel to see ho everything shakes out for James, his family, Lisa, and Leo. In the meantime, I’m going to see what else the author has on offer.

Another new-to-me author and another romantic suspense win. Straight to the Heart is a fast-paced novella following a FBI investigation into the murder of a corporate CEO. I really enjoyed the story, the action scenes, and the characters and will definitely be on the lookout for more from the author.

James and Leo both have rocky pasts, in love and life, which makes them a bit guarded in their interactions with one another and others in the book. I liked the way their complete pasts are shrouded at first, and the reader gleans more information along with the characters. I always enjoy two lost souls finding solace and strength in one another, and I quite liked how Leo and James fit and complement one another. The book closes as the relationship is only just beginning, but the author provides good depictions of both men and I liked that the romance feels natural and unrushed, letting the men’s initial physical chemistry and subsequent emotional connection set the stage for a satisfying happy-for-now ending.

From a suspense standpoint, the case and investigation is done well. The action scenes are exciting and complete with some surprising developments. The good characters, fast-pace, interesting storylines, and smooth writing make Straight to the Heart an easy recommendation to fans of romantic suspense stories.

James Solomon is a rigid FBI agent who knows how to do his job well. When he and his fellow agent arrive in the small backwater town of Winton to investigate the death of CEO Benson, he expects this investigation to go as well as all the others. But what he doesn't expect is Leo Hannah, an intriguing lab tech who may have more to do with the case than anyone realizes.

What follows is a web of lies and half-truths with Leo seemingly at the center of it all. And when James gives in to his desires for Leo, he may find his once undeniable gut instinct compromised.

***************

Written in third-person POV following James, we see how the attraction to Leo takes shape and how out-of-sorts James feels during the investigation when everything seems to point to Leo as the criminal.

I liked James and Leo together, and I thought they were cute. It seemed very much like opposites attract when James is very strict and rigid whereas Leo is very open and laid back. But it also came across as insta-lust turned to affection after only a week of knowing each other. It felt a little rushed to me, but there is a bit of ambiguity with Leo and James' future relationship after the book ends. We don't see them have a happily ever after forever, but rather a happily ever after for now. It works though and for that, the romance and relationship aspect of this book was great. Especially with the two steamy scenes we get in this book.

The investigation on the other hand had a bit of a slow build-up that the beginning of the book dragged too much. It was a bit hard to get into the book and enjoy it, but once you get past about 45% of the book, it speeds up a bit and it's easier to get into. I think it was a bit easy to predict how the book would go and who the bad guy really was, but adding in all of the doubt and finger-pointing to Leo gave James a bit of development as both a character and an agent when he's really trying to figure out just who committed the crime. And that bit of action thrown at the end of the book to get the conclusion really made the book enjoyable to read to the end.

There were a few issues with this book, but none that really took anything away from the intriguing mystery and the cute romance, so I think most people would enjoy this book if they are fine with a romance between two men. But be advised of the trigger warnings provided by the author in the blurb of the book as you should not read if those things are issues for you.

Murder of a CEO takes FBI agents James Solomon and Lisa Gibson, to Benton Industries. While taking a break, James encounters Leo, who makes it clear that not all evidence comes out in a formal interview. Unfortunately, personal issues and feelings muddy the waters of truth.

Leo is a lab rat who, for good or bad, dances to his own tune. He likes what he sees in James and pursues him. James shouldn’t even socialize with Leo in an active investigation, but he can’t help it.

The opening paragraphs outline the crime, victim, and suspect base. Then, the story slows down while the agents do their searches, events develop between Leo and James, and more personal aspects about lives are revealed. Much of this was standard for a good story. What impressed me most was the ending – it rocked, contained plenty of drama, and had me on the edge of my seat. That’s all I’m going to say on that – wink, wink.

Straight to The Heart isn’t a short story, nor is it long on the novel stakes either – easily read in a day. With a large suspect pool, the diverse range of characters was superb. Yet, the author stays focused on the core actors, which can be hard to do. Many authors get sidetracked – not the case here.

James is an agent who is good at his job, but family issues make him vulnerable. I confess that for someone whose tough boss Lisa holds in high regard, I had to take her word over the evidence for a while. Shout out here to Lisa – a character who grew on me through the story. Leo kept me guessing. It made a change for a lab rat to be the pursuer in a detective story. The aspect kept me on the fence over his guilt/innocence, and motives for chasing James.

Overall, the story had a well-balanced mix of investigation, private life, intimacy, and drama. While parts of the tale read slower than others, they were involved with detective work’s more mundane aspects – qualities found more in written work than TV thrillers. I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie with detective novels, though, and adored the finish.

James is an FBI agent. Leo is a witness, later person of interest, on his latest case. Anything between them has "bad idea" written all over it, but James can't resist. This author has a flair for noir, and you definitely get the right mix of world-weary, jaded cynicism mixed with almost fatalistically strong attraction in the connection between James and Leo. James makes a series of bad decisions-- but maybe not for the reasons he thinks. I liked him as a protagonist, and I really liked Leo: for his charm, his resilience, and his ability to hold people, including James, accountable for their actions. A really interesting read.

**First Time Reader** I really enjoyed this story. This was a little out of the norm from other MM romance books I've read. A whodunnit, suspenseful detective type story with a nice amount of romance( a little steam and a little angst) to keep it very entertaining. Not really predictable but a page turner you can't put down. The two MCs were opposites but their attraction was strong. Since this didn't have an epilogue I will say the ending had a satisfying HFN.

I liked this book a lot, I am partial to romantic suspense, and with the book starting with a murder it was right up my alley!
James is the FBI agent assigned to the murder case. Leo is one of the people questioned, and then one of the main suspects, but after he actually spent an incredible night with James…
In a whirlwind of gossip, half sentences, false accuses, twists and turns, I found myself always second guessing the culprit, and Leo’s role in the intricate web of lies.
A fast-paced, well-written, intriguing crime novella!

James Solomon is an FBI agent and is tasked to solve a murder quickly, Leo Hannah works in the lab for the company that the person is murdered. The two are attracted to each other, but James knows he can't get involved with a witness or potential suspect. The book is romantic, some angst, some intense moments and will have your attention from start to finish.

This was excellent! It was a fast moving story that kept me glued to the pages. Leo's boss is murdered. FBI agent James arrives on scene. Leo is chatty for lack of a better word and knows all the gossip. The story was intriguing and well written, loved it. I'm voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received.

I’m not one for crime dramas or murder mysteries but this one worked for me. S. J. Coles did a great job pulling the story together in such a short piece of work. I have to check out some more of their books.

This has me hooked from the start. A great story line with believable MC who had chemistry from the get go.
It had some good twists and turns and I didn’t really guess who the murderer was until nearer the end. Would recommend this book and author.

James Solomon is an FBI agent who works on intuition...Leo Hannah is a young lab-rat who works in technology for the company.(the head of the pharmaceuticals company has just been killed.)

Both men carry baggage into the relationship--Leo more so than James. But by the end of the story, you're rooting for them to be able to work things out, since they're so obviously good for each other.

This is the first book by this author that I have read. I always enjoy a murder mystery. This is the story of James Solomon and Leo Hannah. James is a seasoned FBI Agent who is trying to bounce back from some unsettling surprises in his personal life. It causes him to not trust his "gut instinct" like he used to. Leo is a lab technician at the company where Derek the CEO was murdered. This is a well written and fast paced story. Thought not long in length, it is long in adventure. Leo goes from potential witness to suspect to Jame's partner. James on the other hand, is unsure if his attraction to Leo is throwing off his ability to sense the truth. When the body count rises, so does the frustration and miscommunication between James and Leo. So if you are looking for a quick mystery with well developed characters; look no farther. This book is well written and easy to read. Enjoy. I rated this book 3 1/2 stars.

Fast paced mystery, murder and intrigue. Add two great main characters, who bring their share of personal baggage to a must solve case and you have the makings of a really good page turner.

This case had all the feels. FBI Agent James Solomon is investigating the death of a CEO. The one person who is a top suspect is also the person who occupies too much of his head space. Leo Hannah is a key witness and may not be as forthcoming as Agent Solomon would like.

Can James maintain professionalism or will both succumb to the need while trying to solve this case?

Fast read

I didn’t notice this wasn’t a full novel when I purchased, because I don’t care so much for short reads. That might have biased me. It was a complete enough mystery although a little rushed, had the romance & character background components, it just didn’t feel fully fleshed out to me, for some reason. HFN.

This read like a series but seems to be standalone.
Ends in a HFN
FBI agent James and his superior Lisa are called into a murder. Some rule bending and breaking by James leads to him sleeping with a prime suspect.
Enough twists of intertwined relationships, which only fully come out right at the end, lead to more murder and accusations and jail time before resolution.

very good

I knew I needed to read this book because the author said she was influenced by KJ Charles and by Josh lanyon who are two of my favorite authors. This is the third book I’ve read by this author and it was very good. I love a good crime story with a little romance
