Shifter Island #2

Midnight Lies

Rate this book
Nai thought nothing could be worse than Alpha Academy’s midyear games…

The first few months of school weren’t exactly easy: fated-mate from the rival clan, selkie attacks, and that minor, aka huge, plot to kill her.

But things seem to be going from bad to worse.

After watching a loved one’s horrific death at the hands of the alpha king, Nai decides another visit to Dark Row is in order. After all, a witch there knows the Keeper of Souls, and Nai wants her friend back.

But the trip to the Realm of the Dead doesn’t go quite as planned. Nai discovers a family member has been keeping secrets—BIG secrets. Scratch that. Make that TWO family members—and LOTS of secrets.

When Nai's negotiation skills land her and Rage in a contract that is near impossible to meet, the consequences of success and failure are equally dire.

Ah, hello, trouble!

She's determined to bring her friend back from the dead and still keep her mate, or die trying.

One thing’s for certain, nothing on Shifter Island will ever be the same.

This wasn't my favorite book of this series but it also wasn't that bad. My main issue with it was how these impossible problems came to be but were resolved like it was no big deal at the very end of the book. With how big the problems were I was expecting them to be spaced out into a few books.

Nai continues to be an interesting character. The mysteries surrounding her are becoming clearer. I actually appreciate her stumbling around and asking for help with the things she doesn't know about/hasn't mastered yet. I also appreciate her drive to do things she doesn't want to, to benefit her pack and father.

Rage still leaves a bad taste in my mouth due to the events in the first book. He still hasn't won me over. Maybe with the novella from his point of view as the next book in this series that will lessen or change altogether. As of now, I'm still not a fan and I dislike how fast Nai forgave him for his BS.

The end was disheartening. It would have been too simple to actually have a 10-minute conversation with Rage explaining the circumstances, right? RIGHT? Urgh. I guess I know what to expect in the novella from his point of view now and I'm not happy about it.

The Audio Book:

The narration was fine. The characters were distinguishable from each other and there were no strange noises in the background. The audio was clear and easy to listen to.

Finally made it through this novel after quitting at 25%. Sadly, this novel reminds me why I've stopped reading Leia Stone novels. They're like fantasy-lite. They lack any sort of depth and are so cookie-cutter as to be trite, which is a shame because some of her early work is fantastic.

These characters are ridiculous in their actions, motivations, and illustrations. The Midnight alpha heirs have grown up in the world of magic on Alpha Island. Sure, they've been fed lies about its history, but they understand how magic works, unlike Nai, whose clan was banished and therefore not involved with Alpha Island and all the magic taught there...even though the Crescent Clan Alpha has magic. huh? Even accepting that flawed setup, WHY would Nai or the Midnight brothers jump before thinking. Why are the brothers allowing her to make the decisions? Why are they not trying to get her to follow the mage's advice? Nai has big ideas, but no discernment. WHY would she think she'd get any honest dealings from the dark mage, someone who has proven to be a liar? For someone who has been raised with a healthy dose of distrust, she sure does take a lot for granted. Why does the spirit mage tell her to go to the dark mage, when she's apparently powerful enough to handle the situation herself? The whole beginning is reactionary, and despite this being an academy, there's no actual education happening. Nai is as ignorant when she gets kicked out of the academy as she was when she went in. There's no explanation as to WHY Nai thinks that she should raise the dead. That bit of world-building is absent. She was raised human-adjacent, so what would make her think she could bring him back without longterm consequences? There's ZERO explanation about this decision. It's just too ridiculous for words.

There are other plot holes and timeline issues. How was she able to tell her dad about stuff that happened on the island when she had just said “i took the oath and can’t tell him what’s happening”? They have 4 hours to accomplish a task and 2 are taken up by travel and then they do a whole bunch of stuff and then they have 2 more hours to accomplish the task? Nope. Characters withhold IMPORTANT AND URGENT info because it’s just not convenient. Nope. Characters are in a sudden death situation, but let’s pause our movement so we can have jokes mixed with long narration about stuff that doesn’t matter. Nope. It’s just too much malarkey slowing down the scenes and plot progression. I can't stand the characters anymore. I'm done.

I’m 8% through the book and already there have been at least 6 examples of her giving a percentage like this:

“I was 100.6% sure that our time wasn’t up; we’d only been here all of fifteen minutes!”

And there’s another percentage quote on the next page!!

Nope nope nope.

I knew I shouldn’t start number 2 and this has solidified it for me.

DNF @ 8%~ that’s a new record for me!!

DNF 22%, the love thing is just too insta and doesn't feel natural.

The emotions being shown feel superficial.

Stone has such an amazing world in this series! I love all the different shifters, mage, etc.. you find throughout the book. The backstories and the storyline are weaved together beautifully. This is exciting and action packed living me on the edge of my seat more than once.

Why 4 stars and not 5? Book 1 Nai and Rage were mature, crafty, somewhat angry characters. Book 2 I found them to be immature and annoying at times. This really surprised me the change in their characteristics. I am hoping to see this change in book 3.

This is a complicated, exciting, twist and turn of a read! One I think many will love!

Happy reading,
DD 💕

Holy flamin' llama's what are you girls doing to me?! I'm definitely not okay after reading this book! Holy smokes...I am feeling so many emotions right now and I don't know what to do with myself.

I feel I may have to warn you, I have no clue what is going to come out of my mouth, um fingers, today...so be prepared for anything.

When I started reading this book, I just knew that it would tear at my heart...and oh boy how right I was! Sometimes, I really wish I would stop being right haha because this book seriously hurt my soul.

And that ending...oh my words. Just no! It may not have been as brutal as the first book but it had a power all of its own in a very different way...and I may have been internally stomping my feet and yelling. After all, we all know I can be temperamental when it comes to my bookish characters. I own that lol.

Just dang...I dunno, I want to live in denial that, that ending didn't happen. But I admit, it will definitely keep you wanting to read on. Which is basically the whole point lol...but really? Couldn't just one book, end nicely (without it being the last one haha)?

But, I guess, it's a good thing I like to be tormented whilst reading, as much as I complain about it. Yeah, I thought I would add that tidbit to avoid anyone else bringing it up lol 😆.

Okay, so prepare to be brought through the wringer...and to be in for a world of trouble, where basically a lot goes wrong. But hey, that means you can't possibly get bored. And there's no way that will be possible with this book!

This world continues to easily pull you in and opens up so many possible paths, that the story can lead. I loved everything about this book, how easily you can get lost within it and lose track of all time. It's like you have your own Pongo messing with the time lol.

Let's talk a little about the plot. Do not read further if you have not read book one!

So we know that our dear Honor was horrifically killed. I know! Cue ugly crying! 😭 But Nai is not willing to accept that fate and decides, a visit to Dark Row is very much needed! But they need to move fast, as the Alpha King is now gunning for them. You remember that sly witch Surlama? (Ugh, hate that woman!). Anyway, they are off to try and make a deal with her, to bring Honor's soul back. But things go from bad to worse when Nai and Rage enter the Realm of Dead Souls. Surlama playing her own game tries to trap Nai there, but of course, nothing will stop Nai from completing her mission. Once there, the kindly High Mage of Spirit ally pops in and helps them get to the Keeper of Souls, to make yet another deal.

But whilst there...some MASSIVE secrets are uncovered when Nai meets some family members. All I will say is, these weren't the only secrets that were revealed. I was like...

To save Honor they are now on a deadline...but as soon as they get out of Realm of the Dead, trouble finds them right away. One thing leads to another and Nai and Rage find themselves in a certain court, where they align themselves with an unlikely ally. By doing so, they have yet another contract they have to complete, a very near-impossible task. One that will have a huge impact on the whole shifter world.

But it doesn't matter what comes their way, they are all determined to fight until the very end, nothing will stop them from saving those they love.

Nai is not only fighting to protect those she loves and to make things right...but is also trying to uncover all she can, to bring about a better future for all shifters. Huge sacrifices will be made, ones that will utterly change the game and will seriously give you all the feels. Change is coming and it won't be pretty. It'll be violent and messy.

I loved so much about this story...but what I loved the most, was the relationships, the love and fierce protectiveness, they all have for one another. The characters for me, felt so real like I could physically touch them and be right there with them. The developments of the relationships were so beautiful to watch. They all come so far. I also really enjoyed the budding romance between Rage and Nai. Their mate bond develops so naturally and sigh, just perfectly. I just love how they are with each other. Teasing but also, oh so swoon-worthy.

I just know all you paranormal, shifter-loving folks are going to love what Raye and Leia have cooked up...because I know for me

So what are you all waiting for?! Go and make sure you have preordered Midnight Lies so you get your copy on the 1st December. You guys have gotto read this book! You need it in your life.

Thanks to the amazing woman, Leia Stone and Raye Wagner for this incredible book, that had me going through so many emotions, I could barely keep up. I have thoroughly enjoyed the torment this book has put me through. Thank you so much for having me on your ARC teams! 🖤 I can't wait to see what torture you have up your sleeve for me! Seriously, though I need Midnight Truth like yesterday haha. I have a desperate need to have all the answers...and my patience is like nonexistent...

Okay. Well, I'm calling it for today. I believe I have said more than plenty lol...and plus I gotto do some super fast recouping, as I have a few other books to be reviewing. Yes, I am currently highly caffeinated. To mix it up a bit, I've had a hot cuppa, a large glass of coke, and one very large iced coffee haha. I think I'm good to go. 😆

Anyways, Ramblers thanks for reading and for sticking with me! I hope you are all doing well and enjoying all those amazing books out there.

Happy Reading!

It could've ended nicely here, but....

there is another book and some loose ends to tie up. Namely a v-card, a mate bond, and some corruption. Bring it on!

Really loved how the whole raising the dead thing panned out. I thought a certain traitor would be the receptacle. Nice twist.

Downloading the next one ASAP.

This book's plot was basically a re-hashing of Leia Stone's Fallen Academy plot line.

It is very frustrating because there are a lot of very good refreshing ideas on what is a well trod romance genre. These good ideas are let down by a lack of verisimilitude. Characters do not react to events in a logical or believable fashion. What should be big moments are let down by flippancy.

*spoiler alert*

When one of the four brother dies there is a lack of depth in the reactions of the three remaining brothers. Ok, they come up with a plan to bring him back, which is fine. The plan is pretty clear, find a dead body, bring dead body to magic grandpa, bring brothers soul back. Events happen, they go to meet grandpa and FORGET TO BRING A BODY....like what???? You'd just fought off heaps of bad guys and you could have grabbed any one of them, but no, you FORGOT?????? Never mind, new plan, one brother will separate his human body from his wolf form and dead brother can come back to the land of the living and live the rest of his days as a wolf. Um, WHAT??? A 20 year old guy is going to come back and live the rest of his life as a wolf?! AND THEY DON'T TELL HIM THAT'S THE PLAN. WTF! Like, no having kids, no more banging chicks, no more having hands to read a book, or drive a car, what kind of 20 year old guy would want to live the rest of his days as a wolf. I'm sorry, but to me this was the dumbest thing ever. One can only hope they will find a way to send his soul into some other dead body because that is so stupid I cannot cope. Bloody hell.

Oh my gosh, this is so bad, I’m actually laughing.

I’m at 45% and honestly can’t go on. The writing is… well, it’s not pretty. It’s like one big joke.

The characters make the most idiotic comments constantly. In one moment they are freaking out because they are ABOUT TO DIE and then it’s like they forget what’s going on and start joking around. And then they suddenly remember their situation and start to freak out again.

And this isn’t just once or twice. This happens like every third page. It’s so absurd. I can’t even.

And the cheese. Oh my gosh.
The constant random percentages!
The stupid quips our FMC makes.
The stopping & talking when they’re in the middle of fleeing for their lives.
The fact that the FMC’s so easily distracted from what’s actually important. (Example: her MATE is in the middle of death throes and she’s trying to clean blood off his cheek while thinking, “ewww!”)

If I go farther down that path of providing examples, I’ll never return.

There’s no humor (I think it’s trying but I can’t really tell because it’s falling so flat) and there’s not a lot of chemistry because the two main characters’ interactions are so corny.

I don’t know how this got such high ratings. This is a Goodreads fail of epic proportions.

Content-
Language- Some light swearing
Spice- so far one PG-13 scene of making out and grinding.
I read this on KU

How I rated the series-
Midnight Kisses- 3 stars
Midnight Lies- 1 star (couldn’t make it halfway)

This series is a bit like dark chocolate. It has some bite, it's also semi-sweet, and is ultimately enjoyable. I have some theories about the next book from some clues that were left like breadcrumbs. Looking forward to the next installment. Make sure you read book 1, as you really won't have a clue what's going on otherwise! These are NOT stand-alone!

4/5 STARS!!!

Leia Stone and Raye Wagner have done it again! They have created a phenomenal second book in the Shifter Island series.

I love the unique take on wolf shifters. Instead of having regular shifters, we have magic wielding shifters. This second book follows the main female character, Nai and her struggle to revive Honor. At the same time, the nefarious Midnight Alpha, Declan, is trying to hunt down Nai and the rest of the Midnight Brothers. I love how there are different conflicts happening at once, causing the storyline to be incredibly engaging and fun to read.

Stone and Wagner have developed such a creative and brilliant world. All the characters are three-dimensional with so much depth and complexity. Nai is a wonderful heroine who is hilarious, brave, and caring. I absolutely love the development between her and Rage. The supporting characters greatly strengthens the storyline. My favourite character is Elaine, the Midnight Brothers’ mother, because she is strong and fearless. Elaine is also an amazing mother and she reminds me of my mother—minus the wolf shifter part.

Anyway, Stone and Wagner are impressive writers and they exceeded my expectations for this second book!

Happy Reading!

Cheers,
Jessica :)

Midnight Kisses, the first book in the Shifter Island series, had me hooked and eager to dive into the second book. I was desperate to see how everything would develop, and it had me devouring this in no time. Although I did enjoy this one, I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as I would have liked.

I’ll be honest and say this is a three-point-five-star rating that I opted to round down. I enjoyed the start of this book – even though the development of the romance never really happened, something I was desperate for – but things toward the end felt too rushed for me. The story went from intriguing to cramming lots of things into a rushed story. It had the potential to be gripping, yet the depth I had hoped for was lacking. It was a shame, as it really threw me out of the story. Instead of being gripping, it ticked boxes and moved to the next plot before I was ready. Thus, I rounded my rating down as the way things came together was far too simple and not enough for me.

Despite this one not fulfilling me in the same way as the first book, I remain curious about how things will develop going forward.

What an exciting read!

This book throws you right back in and doesn't waste time getting to the heart of the story.
There were times when the intensity lifted off the page and my emotions were a mess.
Often my interest wanes when the couple get together and the story loses that frenemy angst, and for this reason I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first. Saying that, Nai and Rage are good together, I love how their bond is developing, and their telepathic banter is funny, sweet, sexy and genuine. This is a great book which held my interest and wow what an ending!
I'm eagerly awaiting the next book...

If you though Midnight Kisses was fast paced well then hold on tight to the even more fast paced ride you will find in Midnight Lies.

This was such a journey and Nai grew so much in this book! I loved being able to see her relationship grow with Rage as well. I loved the journey that Nai and Rage went on, we got to see even more of the world and it was amazing.

I couldn’t put this book down and now I’m mad I will have to wait for book 3! If you haven’t started this series you need to as soon as possible!

***Midnight Lies***

Ok i wanted to give it a 5 star but I can't stand all those statistic that Nai kept blabbing about, it would have been brilliant but for some reason they tried to infused it with humour and it didn't sit well because well it's a very emotional story and this ill timed humour gets on my nerve it just pissed me off it's not a right fit to the story with all the heavy emotions going on and the death of one of the midnight prince so yeah no to the ridiculous statistics pls no more.

Loved it! So fun and exciting!

That was very exciting and fun! Had me in suspense a little but I was happy at the outcome. I expected a little more resistance at the end because of what she has to do and what it would cost but I hope the next book will explain why she didn’t put up to much of a fight.

This was a major key down. I held high hopes, but it didn't plan out. The book started off a bit dull, as it decided to focus on reviving the brother who was at peace with his death. Like dude, if I was him I wouldn't want to be revived either. The dynamics between the love interests felt off too.

The main character was not intelligent. Also, a lot of the plot point was unrealistic. An hour after traumatically losing their brother, they're grinning as Rage professes his love for Nai? At best it seems unrealistic that they would act in this way, at worst it makes the characters seem like losing their brother didn't matter to them all that much. (Keep in mind this is less than an hour after he traumatically dies, not later that day, not even days or weeks later, less than an hour.) The main character constantly contradicts herself. She'll make a statement then 3-4 pages later she's contradicting the previous statement. It just made her seem unintelligent, like she couldn't see the obvious things in front of her or she chose ignore them. For example, ******SPOILER****** at the end of this book she is informed by her grandpa that she has to go to this new school as his heir, she asks for how long and he informs her that she may be gone possibly forever. Somehow in her mind that translates to -she can leave her mate without saying goodbye because she'll just get her grandad to bring her back to say goodbye later that night after she signs to be his heir at the new school. - Didn't he just tell you you could be gone forever? In what world does that equal he'll have you back later that night? It was just so frustrating and quite frankly lazy writing. How much do you want to bet that the next book will be her acting surprised and shocked that she can't immediately get back to her mate after signing her name as heir? Even though her grandad led with this info? Like I said an unintelligent heroine.

Reread -
I am obsessed with this series, I love everything about it. I thought reading this book for the second time I would be able to handle the ending, but I was wrong, very wrong.

4.5⭐️
‘Midnight Lies’ is book two in the co-authored series Shifter Island written by Leia Stone and Raye Wagner.

Ok, I don’t know where to start or what to say. I am NOT ok, these authors are just breaking my heart each and every time I read one of these books and the leave it on a massively heart wrenching cliffhanger. Now don’t get me wrong the ending to ‘Midnight Kisses’ was cruel but it left to such a fantastic journey for this book. Be prepared for an emotional journey, there is so many ups and downs. Several times I just screamed at my ereader cause I couldn’t believe what I was reading.

So we know that Honor was horrifically killed at the end of ‘Midnight Kisses. (*cue tissues and ugly tears.) Nai is not willing to accept that Honor is gone, she remembers the dark witch Surlama at Dark Row mentioning being friends with the Soul Keeper. But Nai and the guys, Rage, Justice and Noble need to move fast as the Alpha King is hunting them. Making a deal with the dark witch takes a turn and Nai and Rage end up in the Realm of Dead Souls.

This book was so full of twists, turns, secrets and major revelations. Will Nai and Rage’s mate bond be strong enough to withstand all the lies and secrets between their clans? Will they be able to retrieve Honor’s soul?

I just love, love, LOVE this series! I NEED book three NOW!!! I’m realing over the ending and I need to know how Rage is going to react when he finds out what has happened.

This was a fast paced, fun yet incredibly frustrating book. Frustrating because everything happened at the very last minute. People's lives are on the line, but let's stop to chat and have a nice slow meal. Then OMG we only have 1 minute to save the world! LOL. It was also frustrating because this is not an audiobook yet, so I didn't sleep between shifts because I couldn't put this down.

Action, mates, a long adventure away from school, battles to the death, and of course lots of magic. Then there's the ending! And the knowledge that the third book won't be out for months! Groan!

Midnight Lies is book two in Raye Wagner and Leia Stone’s Shifter Island series. This book picks up where book one left off with Honor dying at the hands of his uncle, and now Rage and Nia now being hunted. The two brothers Justice and Noble are with them, but their paths will take them in a different direction in a quest to bring back Honor who sacrificed himself to protect Nia as a part of her shield. Declan is intent on bringing them down in his continuation of his twisted rule, but alliances will be made and more blood will be spilled as the time for change comes closer.
Midnight Lies is a fast-paced story that kept me page-turning. There is quite a bit going on in this book and I like the variety of characters that we get. I like that we get to see more of the selkies which was really unexpected. I have to admit that I’m intrigued by the selkie king. I had to laugh when I had the same thought process as Nia when they learned a few things about him…even if they were his captives briefly. I love that the truth comes out in this book. We get the truth of what really happened to Rage’s father and Nia’s parents. Of course, you’d have to be a complete sucker to believe Declan’s story, but I like knowing their story.
I hate to say it but my biggest issue with this book is the percentages. What is up with that?! Nia is not that analytical! She doesn’t sit/stand around and think things through…which is obvious by the way that she handles quite a few situations in this book. So…what is the point of the percentages? They don’t even make sense! That just needs to be cut out of the books completely because they have no place in there whatsoever. The “cliffhanger” ending to this book…it’s pretty lackluster, too. I get that the authors want to build anticipation for the next book…but it honestly falls short…big time. It just makes me more disappointed in Nia than anything after everything that happened leading up to that point.
I’m choosing to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I really need the percentages to go. It’d be different if Nia was an analytical type character who thinks things through and all that, but she’s not and so seeing 6.2% or anything else is just really 100% irritating. Some scenes were disappointing in how predictable they were of where the bad guy gets an edge that no one else can see or handle. It’s a bit too predictable. The ending felt phoned in, but I’m hopeful that the next book doesn’t bring in strife and drama just to create a storyline for there to be additional tension between Nia and Rage. This book is a mixed bag of a book for me, so if you read the first and enjoyed it then I say go ahead and read this one.

Last book was great, this one…

The last book was good and quite entertaining. This book was just super annoying. I was irritated with it more than anything else. The writing style changed. The story went sideways with so many things that were so obviously easily reconciled. Like anyone with even a smidge of common sense would know and do.

MFCs obliviousness was out of control. As was her complete inability to focus on ANYTHING. At such an extreme level. She couldn’t finish a sentence without getting side tracked. It was overdone repeatedly. It’s like the focus of the entire book. The amount of eye rolling it induced was exhausting. This one was incredibly juvenile.

There were so many issues with the story. I can’t even begin to list them now. The worst are:

They were supposed to be so powerful yet we’re easily beat over and over when convenient for the story, even though it didn’t make any sense. Making them only powerful during very brief moments.

The way they responded to ANY surprise by literally going into shock. Every. Single. Time. Particularly at the most inconvenient of times.

Nai’s inability to remember that her mate was literally dying at least a dozen times is a short period. Because she was too busy being distracted by the lamest of things, like how pretty things were.

The fact that everyone kept falling for the dark witches lies. Repeatedly. Even though most were so obvious she was pulling one over on them. They just shrugged their shoulders and all was ok?

Why TF would they just leave the king there when they took off? Knowing he would come after them with all his people. He was subdued and they could have easily ensured he stayed that way. Why didn’t they get some of the magic dust and use it on him and others? So many obviously simple things throughout the whole book.

Her insistence that Honor return. Forcing him to be wolf all the time. Forcing brother to lose his wolf. Even after he said he didn’t want to go back and that he was happier there.

The love declaration at the party was so unnatural and felt like it didn’t belong. They hardly spent any time together (besides in wolf form), and those very brief moments were always filled with cruelty and lies. I can see them accepting their bond, but the immediate undying love was so forced and unbelievable. FFS, there are 4 books. Let them spend five min together first.

Oh, there is more. But those are some that come to mind.

I am still undecided on whether to read the next one or not.
