Better Sleep for the Overachiever by Anne Batrtolucci, PHD., CBSM
Non fiction, self-help, health.
A practical approach to sleeping better for the busy mind.
Getting enough sleep has been proven over and over again to be important for your health and mind. The author first defines an overachiever and then the chapters address different factors such as sleep myths, perfectionism, and time management. The text details suggestions, studies and outside sources for background.

My favorite pieces from the book are the Takeaways detailed at the end of each chapter. Of course, you want to read the full text first, and then the bullet pointed Takeaways help set the concepts.

Excerpt from the introduction:
“Overachievers can’t sleep because their minds race, which is a common complaint. Beyond that, they have a strong sense of drive, they can’t relax, and they have trouble letting go of mistakes. Sometimes their minds pounce on them as soon as they get into bed. Other times, they are so exhausted that they fall asleep at the beginning of the night, then — as soon as they’ve slept enough to satisfy their sleep needs — they have a normal awakening, and their minds are waiting for them. “

4.5. The only thing missing is a Chapter outline.

Buy This If You Can’t Turn Off Your Mind Enough to Sleep!

This is exactly the sort of nonfiction book I love, one based on the author's experience. The author is an insomnia specialist and clinical psychologist, and she shares her insights gleaned from her practice as well as her own personal experience of insomnia Insomnia took hold as she is, essentially, an overachiever whose mind had a hard time shutting down and relaxing to get good sleep. Note the “had” in that sentence. She has come up with insights and actions to help herself and her clients achieve better sleep. In this book, she shares them with the rest of us. I am someone who has suffered all my life from insomnia, and most traditional solutions work only hit or miss for me. I look forward to implementing the author's suggestions; I truly hope they will make a difference. By the way, the author writes in a friendly and conversational style. No worries about this book being one that sounds like it is written more by a science-minded clinician than simply another human who has been-there, done-that (but the science is there, too!). It is very accessible. If you struggle with insomnia at least in part due to a mind that you can't shut down enough to sleep, do yourself a favor and pick up this book!

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

She walks through all the ways Overachievers wind themselves up and then can't sleep. One issue after another she offers kinder ways to treat one's self. Alternative ways to think that help dial down the chaos of someone taking on the world. Written from the perspective of an overachiever, you'll find a kindred spirit if you are one too. Her vulnerability in stories from her own life shine through, giving us friendly empathetic guidance to a more peaceful life and better sleep. I'm grateful for this book and the author. :) ZZZzzzzzz....

I would not consider myself an overachiever but I definitely saw myself in various chapters in this very interesting book. I really appreciated the recap at the end of each chapter. I've finally put a paper book next to my bed for reading and not read on my phone. Hopefully, I take the authors advice! I would recommend this book to anyone who has difficulty with sleep.

Not quite 4 stars but not 3 stars. I found useful information. I liked the end of chapter take-aways that extremely briefly summed up what I’d learned so I could remember the things that I found intriguing. But the book was a tad unorganized, or a tangent, at least the last few chapters.
