About the author

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is regarded as one of the prominent literary figures ever existed in india. He was a legend in Kerala.

He was one of those outspoken figures who revolutionized Malayalam Literature, and Thus the World Literature itself with his dauntless sarcasm, satire, and black humor.

Often referred to as the Beypore Sultan (the king of Beypore) by the colleagues, he was one of the prominent figures behind the artistical, economical, and social reformation of the Kerala Culture.

His novel Shabdangal (The Voices) was once banned due to its echo that cyclonized a once feudalistic society.

He is also regarded as the translators nightmare. This is mainly because of the colloquial touch he added to his writings, which ethnically speaking would lose its humor and meaning when translated to other languages.

He was the sufi among the writers and and the greatest exponent of Gandhian Thought.

He was awarded with Padma Sri in 1982 for his overall contributions to nation as a freedom fighter, writer, and as a political activist.

I think Basheer was the only novelist who could have pulled off such a novel in the 20th century. He uses humor, like in satire, to point out the problems in certain religious practices and beliefs. I am not a huge fan of sarcasm and satire. But when it comes to Basheer's books which are overloaded with them, each one is surprisingly my favorite. The author manages to bring smiles to the faces of even strictly orthodox Muslims by pointing out their mistakes in a funny manner.

The way the character of Kunju Pathumma behaves and the way her character arc progresses is simply brilliant. The simple language with regional dialect and pure humor makes this a unique creation that no one should miss.

Social commentaries for change could be told in multiple ways but the most impactful ones are those that are close to reality. Muhammad Basheer chooses the orthodoxy of 1950s old Muslim family who are stuck in past and the impact is on the daughter Kunju Patima.

The first few chapters have a detailed description of the Islam beliefs on the right and wrong of Kaafirs, the Quayamat and the impositions on the women. This, though true as far as beliefs go, sets the stage of the what the conditions of the household are. Kunyu Patima's is a family that had everything including an elephant and today they had to sell off every ounce of gold to sustain. The Umma (mother) is bitter and abusive of the daughter whom she blames for the family's situation and everytime recalls her father's Elephant. There is a hint of mental illness but never explicitly mentioned.

When a non-kaafir (muslim) family moves next door who are still different from them, it piques Patima's curiosity. While the man, Nisar Ahmed behaves like a gentleman with her even when she spoke with him or his sister, Aysha wears a blouse and flowers on her hair and walks around the town, Patima is no longer sure what her parents are holding onto is the only way to be a true muslim. Patima's world changes when she befriends the sibling who start educating her, dress her up and even force their dad to build a toilet despite her mom's protests.

Fittingly enough towards the end her mom gets snubbed by kids for trying to bring up her family's past glory. Holding onto the past can leave you behind - a message in 1950s. I listened to the tamil translation since I heard the malayalam dialect is tough to follow.

'അന്നുരാത്രി വളരെ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും കുഞ്ഞുപാത്തുമ്മായ്ക്ക് ഉറക്കം വന്നില്ല. ആയിഷായുടെ ഇയ്ക്കാക്കായെ വരുത്തരുതെന്ന് അവൾ നേരത്തേ പടച്ചവനോടു പ്രാർഥിച്ചതാണ്! ഇപ്പോൾ മറിച്ചെങ്ങനെ പറയും?

ബഷീറിന്റെ എഴുത്തിന്റെ മാസ്മരികത വെളിപ്പെടുത്തിയ മറ്റൊരു കൃതി; 'ന്‍റുപ്പാപ്പാക്കൊരാനേണ്ടാർന്ന്'.
ബഷീർ എഴുത്തുകളെ എന്നും ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ഇൗ പുസ്തകത്തിന് എന്തോ അന്യമായൊരു മായാജാലം ഉണ്ടെന്ന് തോന്നി. വായിച്ചു തീർന്നപ്പോൾ കുഞ്ഞുപാത്തുമ്മ പരകായ പ്രവേശം നടത്തിയപോലെ. 'കരളില് ഒരു വേതന'.
ഉറങ്ങാൻ കിടന്നപ്പോൾ വരെ കുഞ്ഞുപാത്തുമ്മ മനസ്സിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.

ഒരു രാത്രി വൈകിയാണ് 'ന്‍റുപ്പാപ്പാക്കൊരാനേണ്ടാർന്ന്' വായിച്ചു തീർന്നത്. പുറത്ത് കർക്കിടകത്തിലെ പതിവു മഴ. വായിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞ് ജനാലക്കുള്ളിലൂടെ പുറത്തേക്ക് നോക്കുമ്പോൾ മഴ തോർന്നിരുന്നു. കാറ്റിൽ പക്ഷേ, പെയ്ത മഴയുടെ ഓർമയ്ക്കെന്നവണ്ണം മരം പെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
അന്ന് കിടക്കാനായി തുടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ ഞാനും അറിഞ്ഞത് ഒരു മരം പെയ്ത്തായിരുന്നു. കുഞ്ഞുപാത്തുമ്മയും നിസാർ അഹ്‌മ്മദും അയിഷയും എല്ലാം നിറഞ്ഞു പെയ്യുന്നു ഉള്ളിൽ.

ബഷീർ എഴുത്തിന്റെ ലാളിത്യം എന്നും ആസ്വദിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിലും ഇത്തരമൊരു ഇഷ്ടക്കൂടുതൽ തോന്നുന്നത് ഇതാദ്യമാണ്. ഇത് ഒരു പക്ഷെ ബേപ്പൂർ സുൽത്താന്റെ സ്വർണത്തൂലികയിൽ നിന്നും അടർന്നുവീണതിൽ വച്ച് ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ഒരു ചെറുകഥയാണ്.

ഇൗ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ വളരെ അധികം വായനക്കാരനെ ആകർഷിക്കുന്നത് കഥാനായിക; 'കള്ള ബുദ്ദൂസ്‌', കുഞ്ഞുപാത്തുമ്മയുടെ നിഷ്കളങ്കതയാണ്. ഒരു 'ഉറുമ്പിനെ പോലും ദ്രോഹിക്കാത്ത', 'റബ്ബുല്‍ ആലമീനായ തമ്പുരാന്‍റെ സൃഷ്ടികളിൽ ഒന്നിനെപ്പോലും വെറുക്കാത്ത' കുഞ്ഞുപാത്തുമ്മ!

തുടക്കത്തിൽ ഒരല്പം വായനയുടെ വേഗത കുറയുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് ആസ്വാദകനെ മറ്റൊരു ലോകത്തിലാക്കുന്ന എഴുത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിഭ ഇതിലുണ്ട്.

'കുഞ്ഞുപാത്തുമ്മാ,’ നിസാർ അഹ്‌മ്മദ് പറഞ്ഞു: ‘നമ്മുടെ ആ കുരുവിയില്ലെ, അത് എന്‍റെ അടുത്തു വന്ന് കുഞ്ഞുപാത്തുമ്മായ്ക്കു സുഖമാണോ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു. ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞു. ‘ഏതോ ഇഫ്‌രീത്തിനെ ഓടിക്കാൻ അവളൊരു ‘സൂട്ട്കേസ്’ കഴുത്തിൽ കെട്ടിത്തൂക്കിക്കൊണ്ടു നടക്കുകയാണ്!’ എന്ന്.

സാധാരണ പ്രണയം കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്ന രീതി വിട്ട് വായനക്കാരനെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തി വായിപ്പിക്കുന്ന എഴുത്താണ് ഇൗ പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകത. പ്രണയം നല്ല രീതിയിൽ ബഷീർ ഇതിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ലാളിത്യമുള്ള, നിഷ്കളങ്കമായ, വായനക്കാരന് ഇഷ്ടം തോന്നുന്ന രീതിയിൽ. എന്നാൽ ഇതു വെറും പ്രണയ കഥ മാത്രമല്ല. ഫലിതവും ഒപ്പം ആക്ഷേപഹാസ്യവും മികച്ച രീതിയിൽ ബഷീർ അവതരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു 'ന്‍റുപ്പാപ്പാക്കൊരാനേണ്ടാർന്ന്' എന്ന പുസ്തകത്തിൽ.
സ്വമതത്തിൽ നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന പല അബദ്ദാചാരങ്ങളെയും നല്ല ഭാഷയിൽ അദ്ദേഹം വിമർശിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് ഇവിടെ.

"മുടി ചീകാം. പക്ഷേ, വകഞ്ഞുവെക്കരുത്!
ഇതിനെതിരായി ആയിടെ ഒരു മുസ്ലിം യുവാവ് പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. അയാൾ മുടി വളർത്തി, ക്രോപ്പു ചെയ്തു. അതു വകഞ്ഞും വെച്ചു!
ബാപ്പാ ആ ചെറുപ്പക്കാരനെ വിളിപ്പിച്ച് ഒസ്സാനെക്കൊണ്ട് മുടി വടിപ്പിച്ചുകളഞ്ഞു. എന്തിന്? മുടി ആരു സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു? എന്തിനു സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു? ആരും ചോദിക്കുകയില്ല."

ഇവിടെ ബഷീർ നടത്തുന്നത് അക്കാലത്തുണ്ടായിരുന്ന അന്ധ വിശ്വാസങ്ങൾക്ക്‌ എതിരെയുള്ള ഒരു ശബ്ദമുയർത്തൽ കൂടെയാണ്. അനാചാരങ്ങൾ നിർബാധം നിലനിന്നിരുന്ന ആ കാലത്താണ് ബഷീർ ഇതെല്ലാം എഴുതിയത് എന്നോർക്കുമ്പോൾ അത്ഭുതം മാത്രമല്ല, തികഞ്ഞ ബഹുമാനവുമാണ് തോന്നുന്നത്.

എന്തായാലും വായിച്ചു തീർന്നപ്പോൾ ഒരു വിഷമമാണ് ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത് ; എത്ര വേഗം തീർന്നുപോയി എന്ന്. ഇത് ഒരുപക്ഷേ അല്പം കൂടി വലിയ നോവൽ ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിലോ എന്നൊക്കെ ഓർത്തു പോയി. ബഷീറിനു മാത്രം കഴിയുന്ന എഴുത്തിന്റെ മായാലോകത്തിന്റെ ഒരു തെളിവു കൂടിയാണ് 'ന്‍റുപ്പാപ്പാക്കൊരാനേണ്ടാർന്ന്'. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭാഷയും എടുത്തു പറയേണ്ടത് തന്നെ. മലബാർ മുസ്‌ലിം സംഭാഷണ ശൈലിയും ഇൗ പുസ്തകത്തിന് മധുരം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
വായിച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും ബുക്ക്മാർക്ക് ചെയ്ത പലതും വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും എടുത്ത് നോക്കിയതും ആ മധുരം വിട്ടുപോകാഞ്ഞിട്ടാവാം.

Reading textbook Malayalam is one thing. Understanding the Mappila dialect is another. In spite of being exposed to both, reading a novel written in one of the colloquial dialects of North Malabar was challenging to say the very least.

That said, the prescience of the author is worth mentioning given the book was published in the 1950s. Following ideas shine through the satirical prose narrated from Kunjipathumma's perspective. One, tendency of orthodox families to hold on to the hubris and pride. Two, their reluctance to accept change and new ways of life. Three, the role of education and exposure in changing one's world view.

I skimmed through the detailed religious anecdotes in the first half as the dominance of superstitions in the narrator's upbringing was well conveyed even otherwise.

Last year one of my GR friends commented on a German book, not in English translation, how she regretted knowing she would never be able to read it. I felt the same way after finishing this incredible collection, printed by UNESCO, by a writer of a language I knew nothing about, spoken by millions in Kerala in south India. And they were fantastic, which I hope some of the quotes I selected below will confirm. After closing the volume, I immediately went online only to find absolutely nothing of his novels in translation. I was gutted. It was like tasting the best thing ever and finding out you'd never get it again. The closer you are to the occurrence, the more it hurts.

Thankfully I found a couple of movies based on Basheer's writing, one more than semi-autographical, subtitled and on YouTube. Also wonderful. I'll gobble up anything of his I find in the future.

The veteran Malayalam writer Vaikkam Muhammad Basheer taken on the conservative believes satirically and silly them using fun. With simple and innocent incidents, the author portray how these conservative believes hold their life in insecurity. A call for change is what Ntuppappakkoraanaendaarnnu...A must read....

എന്തോ, എന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ അതെപ്പോഴും ഒരു ആൺകുട്ടി പറയുന്ന dialogue ആയിട്ടായിരുന്നു കിടന്നത്.

അവിടം തൊട്ട്, എന്റെ പ്രതീക്ഷക്ക് വിപരീതമായി - ഒരു തമാശ കഥ എന്ന് വിചാരിച്ചു വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയത്, deep-social commentary ആയി മാറി.

നമ്മുടെ കാലത്തുനിന്നോ അതിനു ശേഷമോ തിരിഞ്ഞു നോക്കുന്നയാളാണ് ബഷീർ എന്നും ചിലപ്പോ തോന്നി പോവും.

இது மொழி பெயர்ப்பாளரின் வலிமையைக் காட்டுகிறது. முன்பு சில ஆங்கிலப் புத்தகங்களை வாசித்திருக்கிறேன். அதிலெல்லாம் இது மொழி பெயர்ப்பு நூல் என எளிதில் கண்டறியும் வகையில் இருந்தது. ஆனால் இவ்விரு புத்தகங்களை வாசிக்கும் போது அப்படித் தோன்றவில்லை. தமிழ்ப் புத்தகம் எப்படி இருக்குமோ அதே போல் அமையப் பெற்றது சாலச்சிறப்பு.

பஷீர் அவர்களைப் பற்றி பார்த்தோமே ஆனால், நவீன மலையாள முன்னோடி எழுத்தாளர்களில் பஷீர் அவர்களும் குறிப்பிடத்தகுந்தவர். இந்தக் கதை ஒரு குடும்பத்தைப் பற்றிய கதை. நிகழ்காலத்தில், இறந்த காலத்தின் பெருமைகளோடு, அதன் நினைவுகளையே அசை போட்டு வாழ்கின்றனர். கதையின் முக்கியக் கதாப்பாத்திரம் குஞ்ஞபாத்துமா.. இவள் இளவயதுப் பெண் ஆவான்.

குஞ்ஞபாத்துமாவின் அம்மாவின் பெயர் குஞ்சதாச்சுமா... அதாவது "ஆன மக்காருக்கு செல்ல மவளாக்கும்"...
ஆம்.. குஞ்ஞபாத்துமாவின் உப்பப்பாவுக்கு ஒரு ஆனையிருந்தது. அதாவது அம்மாவின் அப்பாவிற்கு...
"எஞ்செல்ல குஞ்ஞபாத்துமா... நீ ஆன மக்காருக்கு மவளுக்கு செல்ல மவளாக்கும் ... உங்க உப்பப்பாவுக்கொரு ஆயிருந்தது... பெரிய கொம்பானை..." என்று அவளின் அம்மா நித்தம் புகழ் பாடிக் கொண்டே இருப்பாள்..

குஞ்ஞபாத்துமா ... வரும் கணவன் ஆனை மேல் வருவானா என்ற எதிர்காலச் சிந்தனையிலேயே ஆழ்ந்திருப்பாள்.. வருபவன் எப்படி இருப்பான்.. ஆனை மேல் வருவானா... கருப்பா... சிவப்பா... கல்யாணம் ஆன பின்னர் குடும்பத்துடன் புனிதப் பயணம் செல்ல அவன் அனுமதிப்பானா... என்று சதா எதிர்காலத்தைப் பற்றிய கனவிலேயே ஆழ்ந்திருப்பாள் குஞ்ஞபாத்துமா...

குஞ்ஞபாத்துமாவின் உப்பா, அதாவது அப்பா, வட்டனடிமை.. ஊரில் நல்ல செல்வாக்கு உள்ள ஆள்... இதனூடாகவே கதை பின்னப்பட்டு வருகிறது. ஆங்காங்கே இஸ்லாம் சமூதாயத்தின் சடங்குகள் பற்றியும் இபுலீஸ் என்னும் பகையன் பற்றிய நம்பிக்கைகளும் கதையின் ஊடாக சொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இப்படி செல்வக்குடன் வாழ்ந்த குடும்பத்தில் என்ன நிகழ்ந்தது.. உண்மையிலேயே குஞ்ஞபாத்துமாவின் உப்பப்பாவுக்கு ஒரு ஆனையிருந்ததா... இல்லை அது கற்பனையா... பழம்பெருமைகளின் நினைவுகளிலேயே புகழ் பாடிக் கொண்டிருந்த குடும்பம் சந்தித்த இன்னல்கள் என்ன... பதில் புத்தகத்தில்.. வாசித்துப் பாருங்கள்...

This is the first novel I've read from author Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, but definitely not the last one. Despite that this novel is short, concise, and easy to read, it is filled with meaningful themes and morales to learn about.
The book is about a young woman, from a wealthy Muslim family whose mother refuses the numerous mariage proposal until the family loses their entire fortune and influence and is unable to marry their only daughters. They moved outside of the city in a poor area where they meet another Muslim family different from them.

1st published in 1951, the author presented a complete picture of various Muslim families: a minority of wealthy and influencial familiy thanks to inherited privileges, a majority of uneducated Muslim families knowing scarcely about their own religion thanks to oral speeches, Muslim families who refuses to coexist with anybody unlike them still holding on to their past. In addition, the author described a minority of new and contemporary Muslim families, of humble origins with no known past/stories, educated and working hard for their future. The story brings one of those wealthy and uneducated Muslim family to live next to this new category of educated and hard working Muslim family.

The author sucessfully and intelligently using humour and satyre to describe the Muslim community in India. However, this story is not specific to India before 1950's, but common to many Muslim countries even today. This is a universal novel that can be read by all and still unfortunately realistic today.
