My next door neighbor Parker Jax is not my type. He’s covered in tats, rides a motorcycle, and his parties keep me up all night. The fact he’s sexy as sin doesn’t change the fact we are oil and water. I’m a quiet artist. He’s a rowdy marine. I’ve got a broken heart. I’m convinced he doesn’t have a heart at all. Thankfully, my bad-boy neighbor is on leave from the Marines for only thirty days. But then the jerk has to go and show me that he has a soft side beneath all those hard muscles. He actually leaves his own party to help me, and he didn’t even have to. Fantastic. Now I owe him.I’m not worried, though. What are the chances he’ll need me to do anything before the month is up? But when a woman shows up with a kid at her side, knocking on Parker’s door, it turns out those chances are pretty good...

This wasn't quite what I was expecting. Honestly, I thought it was a simple neighbors-to-lovers kind of book, but it wasn't. For some reason, there was a bit enemies-to-lovers, mainly because Parker behaved like a complete asshole and Skylar decided to ignore him as much as she could. And I guess if the author had sticked to that, it would have been ok. But no. Then, out of nowhere, a woman shows up, claiming she is the mother of Parker's son. And Parker tells her that he is engaged to Skylar (because he is a selfish idiot). Do you follow me? Basically, there is: 1) enemies-to-lovers; 2) neighbors-to-lovers; 3) single dad and 4) fake relationship. All in -according to GR- 150 pages.
I did like the angst, though. And Skylar was a good character. But Parker was an idiot, like I said before. His family was awful and Gemma (baby mommy) was terrible. The author would jump in time without much sense, and she would leave out stuff that was kind of important (like big fights between main characters).
We have Skylar, an African-American woman, a wood artist, and a neighbor with an active duty marine, Parker Jax. When Parker is home, he has loud parties with a lot of women parading through his home. And all that is annoying for Skylar. They are denying their mutual attraction but when she agrees to help him and act like she is his fiance until a paternity test could be done on the child that is allegedly his, something starts to develop. There are a lot of things going on in this story and something from that situation is born and how will develop, you will have to see it by yourself. This is a mashup of tropes, some were nicely fitted, and others unnecessary. We have enemies to lovers; interracial romance; fake dating... It is an easy read that will help you fill the time on these hot summer days.
Ok, guys, first thing that caught my eye, THAT COVER. Absolutely stunning and steamy!
The blurb kept my attention and the book was literally me turning the ePage as fast as my eyes could zip through each page.
Word of warning for those who prefer clean romances, this is NOT that book. The sex isn't overly described, but the four letter words are used frequently to the point of punctuation, so be warned if you aren't into strong language.
Also, baby-mama drama, discussed drug-abuse, child mistreatment, if not full on abuse, off-page adultery and loss of a spouse and child.
None of that bothered me too much, I liked the characters, the plot while far-fetched doesn't snap credulity and it had my necessary HEA. This whole year has been one big "Can I please have some happy news?", so I have been gravitating towards HEA, which is the usual MO for a genre I usually don't read much of, romance.
This might not have caught and kept my attention in "normal" times, but if you are a fan of contemporary romance that has some sizzle and spice, then you are going to find this...nice. (Sorry, I had to go for the rhyme!)
3.5 stars, rounded down because the language wasn't quite my cup of tea. 3, I know I know I'm a bit of a prude, stars. One I would recommend if you don't mind strong language in your contemporary romance.
Also, there were other books listed in the back of this one and I impulse bought one of them that is 4th in a series. If I like it, guess what we are adding to our store shelves?
I do hope this is part of a series and we get to see Gibson's and Ioan's HEA. (Hint Hint!) Definitely an author I will be keeping an eye out for.

This was not what I was expecting. I knew it would be a alpha male, I expecting sexiness.. And I got those things however the plot had a lot of holes and things I just didn't understand.
The relationship between skylar and Paker made no sense .there response to each other didn't sound like what real people would say to each other and the pit relationship journey didn't seem natural.
The fake engagement made no sense for the time and place in the story. It actually didn't seem needed at all. His parent reaction, his reaction to his baby mamma.. All seemed so unlikely and unrealistic.
Both Skylar and Packer had some baggage that could have added some depth to the but it was never really talked about other than touched on when someone reacted based on that past baggage. Could have brought therapy to the forefront.
If you're looking for sex and lots of drama this didn't have a storage of it...once I was able to accept the unrealistic reactions and situations it was a good light read.
Skylar and Parker are total opposites who seem to can't stand one another. Skylar resents her neighbor, Parker, for his wild parties that always tend to run over into her yard but spends a great deal of time watching him secretly from her bedroom window because in spite of the noise he his easy on the eyes. Parker knows that he's irritating his neighbor but that seems to be the only way he can get any type of reaction from Skylar, and even though he won't admit, her reactions really make his day. So when unexpected drama shows up on his door step in the form of a possible baby momma, Parker decides to solve two problems with one solution. One that would get him closer to Skylar while keeping him far away from the drama that is now temporarily taking up residence in his home. He decides that introducing Skylar as his fiance will solve all of his problems to bad no one else agrees with him and that's when the true drama begins. This was a quick read about to people finding love when neither thought they were ready or even looking for it. Both the hero and heroine have issues they are dealing with, Skylar has a painful past and Parker has a uncertain future. I loved how they each helped one another without really knowing it but just by being there when they were going through uncomfortable times. I also loved the strength that Skylar exuded when she reached her drama threshold, and said enough because there were points in the story when I wanted to slap Parker myself. Overall I enjoyed the characters and the parts they played which made for a wonderful quick read.
What first drew me to this book was the cover. It's simply amazing and I love it. And when I read the blurb I was even more excited to read the book. It started off really great but then the more I read the less I liked it and about half way through I started skimming just to get to the end. Based on the blurb I was expecting a different story. Once Parker's ex was introduced the book took a turn I didn't care for. On top of that I had a hard time connecting to Skylar from the get-go. And I also wasn't a big fan of Parker, the hero. He made some questionable decisions in my opinion. And the chemistry between Parker and Skylar, I did not feel it, at all - but, they were sweet together in the end. I enjoyed some parts of the book anyway. But other parts were a catastrophe for me and I didn’t enjoy them at all. It was disappointing because it was either really good or really bad. There was no inbetween. I also feel like the plot was not flowing. That's why the book dragged and I had to push myself to finish it. Oh well, I loved the concept but I don't think the execution was the best. I’m still looking forward to reading more books by Ms. Burke but this one didn’t quite excite me as much as I had hoped.
***I received this book for free from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Her Marine Next Door is an interracial romance. The main characters are Skylar Radford, African-American woman, a woodworker, who lives next door to an active duty marine, Parker Jax. When Parker was home on leave he played his music loud and had parties with women in different state of dress. They blocked her driveway and threw trash in her yard.
After a year, they were aware of each other and actually watched each other. She was angry because of what went on at Parker's house and he had the nerve to borrow her blender which led to her cutting her hand badly and Parker took her to the hospital and spent the night to take care of her.
There was an attraction between them that she tried to deny. She had a secret that affected her being truthful about her feelings for Parker. Parker thought it was simply a physical attraction and when he finally had sex with her, he could go about his business. Then a former one night stand showed up with a son, Cullen. She said that Parker was the father. Skylar fell in love with his son and agreed to Parker's scheme of pretending to be his fiance until a paternity test could be done. Parker moved in with Skylar and allowed Gemma and Cullen to live in his house. He didn't want Gemma, Cullen's mother, to think they would become a family.
There were so many things going on that made no sense. The book was disjointed and full of errors including crude language referring to sex and body parts. Parker was arrogant and rude. You met Parker's parents when he introduced Skylar as his fiancee. You immediately knew the mother was racist and took Gemma's side, even though she was a drug user and an alcoholic.
The best thing about the book was Cullen and Parker's marine buddies, Gibson and Ioan, who immediately knew she was the woman Parker needed and became protective of Skylar. It was strange how Skylar allowed herself to be treated, all because she loved Cullen. Of course Gemma hated her and damaged furniture and did other things Skylar built. His mother always took Gemma's side as did Parker.
This could have been a really good interracial novel. It wasn't because Parker wasn't honest about his feelings for Skylar. She kept her feelings locked which also affected their relationship. Their relationship went dowhill until his friends took it upon themselves to try to open Parker's eyes. Skylar decided to take herself out of the picture for the good of Cullen. Most of the times, their actions made no sense.
This was a difficult book for me to finish. Since it's a romance, there's an Epilogue which was rushed just to present a HEA. I would love to read a story about Parker's buddies, especially Gibson.
This was a quick read filled with well worn tropes that was at turns comfortable and yet still somewhat unsatisfactory.
At its heart this is an enemies-to-lovers/ fake-dating storyline.
Parker is a marine who lives next door to Skylar a wood-artist/craftsperson. Whenever he comes back from a mission his house becomes party central for the first few nights for his team. Skylar suffers through the cars blocking her drive but she makes her displeasure felt.
Even while She and Parker exchange barbs and insults over their shared fence, they are massively lusting for each other.
During his latest leave, things come to a head. Parker is injured so he is is grounded until he gets the all clear. The animosity between him and Skylar is at an all time high. Until an ex-hook up shows up with a surprise in tow. And Parker enlists Skylar's help.
So the foundation gets laid for a fake engagement so that ex-hook up doesn't get ideas while a DNA test is in the offing.
On the one hand, I found the enemies-to-lovers deal with Skylar and Parker fun. Their snarky back and forth was good as was their little bit of hot and cold that went with it.
What didn't land as well was the fake dating. It felt contrived (more than usual) because Parker rather high handedly claimed Skylar as his fiancee without her input. And of course she does not demur because ... lust... and they latch onto it as an excuse to be in each other's orbit. This wouldn't be so bad, but it felt... immature of these two.
Also there is a bit of tonal dissonance for me. The way the fake dating is written, Parker acts and speaks as if it is a real thing. Skylar at least reminds him it isn't, but then she kinda lets him railroad her a bit so she gets pulled under by scheme. He introduces her to his family as his fiancee. I can't put my finger on it, but this whole thing never really coalesced for me.
Added to that there is the ex-hook up who insinuates herself into their lives. Again here, this did not work for me, another area of tonal dissonance. Parker is supposedly this tough alpha dude but his treatment of the ex felt like bluster and theater. I get that we are supposed to feel good about Parker that he is willing to work with the mother of his child, but she was a walking cliche (and a super terrible person and mother) that was used as an external conflict device when there was already enough conflict to be had.
And finally, I was kinda pissed at Parker. Skylar basically upended her life was doing him a huge solid and it was his people who were shitting on her life but if just felt like he just didn't have her back in situations where he should have with enough conviction for me.
One smallish note, this is an ARC so it may be corrected in final publication, but at one point Parker is referred to as 'Brodie'. It was just once but it felt like maybe Brodie had been the character's name at one point but this one instance of it got missed.
So while this was an easy read and at no point did I feel like I wanted to set it down, it was rather frustrating in places.
This is an honest review is based on an ARC received via Netgalley from the publisher.
This is the story of Skylar and Parker, two neighbors harboring a deep attraction that by circumstances turns into a fake engagement. Add in her very painful past, his recovery from a combat injury, plus new events in his life that tap into all her pain and fears and you have a "can't put it down" kind of book.
This would be a 4.5 stars for me as it has a bit too much drama for my liking, but given the nature of the action and the characters involved it would have been impossible not to add this in mix.
Now what I did like - was a lot. I loved how both characters are beautifully evolving in their own way, how they are created in all their human beauty and imperfection. I loved how wonderful Skylar acted around Parker's new family member and how all three of them were together. I liked the side characters, from the adorable gossipy old lady, the "get it together" friend and the camaraderie between team guys which is always such a beautiful thing to see in this kind of books. Bonus points for how they supported and brought Skylar into that extended family. But more than anything, what shines brighter than anything in this book is Parker's attraction to Skylar and how he keeps telling her all the time how much he wants her, his love is pretty obvious from the beginning. While his actions are a little slower to state the same, for a fake relationship he is right from the start mesmerized by her and he's not afraid to show it.
This was a pretty complex story, very well written, there is not too much of anything, full of heated moments, some funny ones, some heartfelt ones, some painful and some mean ones. Fast paced enough to keep you on your toes and full of candid moments to keep you emotionally involved.
It's a great book for anyone searching for a military romance with a little heat on the sensual side and not much on the combat side, and for anyone who enjoy this kind of trope. A great read!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was a great, quick read by a new to me author. Right before I started it, I went to read a few reviews and went in thinking I wouldn’t like it after what I had read. But I really did and thought the story was great and it held my attention throughout.
My problem with the story was not with the characters, like several of the reviews seem to focus on. Mine was with the editing. Now while I usually don’t mention mistakes and errors if the book is an arc, especially if the author lets me know it is not done being edited, but there was no mention that this book was still in edits. So with that being said, a lot of sentences had to be reread because they came off confusing. There was even some guy’s name mentioned, and I am assuming there was a name change at some point and it got left in the manuscript. Also, there was mention of going to a jewelry store to get a ring, and then nothing else about it until the end. Like I said, confusing at times.
All in all, the story was an entertaining read that had lots of heat. Parker and Skylar’s chemistry was off the charts and they had this super charged intensity that was constantly sparking whenever they were near one another. I would absolutely recommend this book. 4 Stars!!
I was looking forward to loving this book. I loved the cover and the blurb caught my attention instantly. However, as the story progressed and I got to meet the main characters, I felt my interest waning. Parker didn’t do it for me. I understand the take-charge, broody, alpha male attitudes, but Parker came across more like a bully when it came to his approach towards getting Skylar to give him a chance. As for Skylar, I tried giving her the benefit of the doubt once I learned where she was coming from, but in the end I couldn’t really connect with her on any level. I found myself skimming through her POV cause she kept on going around in circles and repeatedly stating the same thing. In the end, skimmed through everything that wasn’t dialogue. I mean, I couldn’t even be bothered to read the love scenes, which means I’m definitely wasn’t interested in the story.
All in all, a great concept, but not the book for me.
Parker is tattooed bad boy marine who when he is home his house is the place to party at, and he is not worried about annoying his next-door neighbor when they encroach on her property. Skylar is an artist who is the total opposite to Parker, but the attraction between them is palpable. When an ex arrives on Parker’s doorstep with a surprise bundle, he gets Skylar to help him and they enter a fake engagement to stop his ex-getting any crazy ideas while they wait for the DNA results. This is a good story which has an intricate and complex plot, and is heartfelt, humorous, fast paced, and a steamy read. The only downside and this is my opinion only, is that I struggled to connect to the characters at times. However, I look forward to reading more from this author and I recommend her work.
This started out with a great premise, neighborhoods (one who doesn't like the other) turned lovers plus throw in an ex with toddler. But it just seemed like there was always something missing. Reading along and then there's something that hadn't been explained (like where and when with the fake ring). It isn't until the end that it confirmed that she has an African heritage. We never know why his mom hates her on sight. . It also took way too long for him to find out about her past. There are just skips and gaps all over the place.
It was a great read and well written. The story line and the characters were well developed. Parker thought he had everything he wanted until what he needed came in the form of a readily made family. Skylar has been through a traumatic experience and became a shell of herself. Can her neighbor and his son be what she needs to heal? I really enjoyed reading this book.
I was given an advanced reader copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Her Marine Next door was pretty much what you would expect from a novel in this genre. The sex was a bit awkward to read, and there are holes in the plot that I wanted to see more into. That being said, I felt the book was an entertaining enough read, and I did gift a copy to my friend on Kindle so she could read it too.
I recieved this as an ARC from NetGalley. This was the frist time I had read anthing written by Aliyah Burke. I loved Her Marine Next Door so much. I couldn't put it down and ended up reading it in a day. It was extremely well written. I loved the characters. They were relatable. I am interested in reading more books by Aliyah Burke.
Skylar is jut AMAZING. Parker is mostly amazing, although he needed her to set him straight a few times. An interesting and unique storyline that kept me up way past my bedtime finishing it! Can't wait to read more from this author!
The book was boring but the blurb was amazing, which increased my expectations . I pushed myself hard to read this one. I received this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Skylar Radford and Parker Jax live next door to one another. He hosts wild, raucous, loud parties and she wants to hear soft music in the background while she works with wood. They are nicely different. The book started strong, then devolved into a lot of bickering, hurt feelings, and torment.
Skylar is polite, to the point of being a doormat. Parker is into his single life. For some reason, Parker asks Skylar to be his fake fiancée when an ex-hookup arrives with his son in tow: surprise! Doormat Skylar agrees. They bicker constantly, even through their good times. Something always sets off one or the other of them.
Parker’s parents, particularly his mother, are pieces of work. His mom is cruel, ugly, and deeply unkind. His father (whom Parker calls "sir") is cold and indifferent. What kind of childhood did he have? On the other hand, Parker never sets them straight about his feelings for Skylar and the true nature of his ex-hookup. That whole situation with the ex-hookup and Parker’s mom is weird and perturbing.
At 45% completion, the arguments and misunderstandings between Parker and Skylar are on repeat and have become contrived and monotonous; their purpose seems to be to extend the pages of the book. At 73% completion, the same arguments and resulting pain are bubbling over, as they have been since before the 45% mark. It is difficult to read.
Parts of the book are out of sequence and I got tired of going back and forth trying to figure out the timeline. Here’s an example: on Kindle page 131, Parker asks Skylar if she’s still angry with him and that he’s sorry for not believing her when she told him about his ex’s behavior. But, Skylar hasn’t accused the ex of anything yet. That occurs on Kindle page 160 (29 pages later) when Skylar makes her accusations and they have a fight. And here’s a curiosity: Skylar says she has video proof of Parker’s ex behaving badly. So…why didn’t Skylar simply show Parker the video? Unknown.
Parker seems conflicted throughout the book, unable to make up his mind about much of anything in his life. He loves the girl, and loves his single life. He loves his son, and loves not being tied down by him. He loves his parents, but allows them to ride roughshod over the girl he loves. Even the last sentence of the last chapter of the book (before the epilogue) shows his continuing conflict: “If giving up the single life means changing for this, he was willing to accept it as his ultimate sacrifice.” So, he seems to love his freedom more than his girl and son, but will make a considerable (“ultimate”) sacrifice to give up his freedom. Really? It’s a sacrifice? He doesn’t want them of his own volition? Geez…how romantic is that???
There are errors. For instance: “…he wanted to continue enjoy the single life.” Maybe “…he wanted TO enjoy the single life?” “…pausing between her and Cullen and her.” What does this mean? Parker is standing between Skylar and his son. “Both yours and happy. I have absolutely no idea what this means, even within context of its paragraph.
I rated this book 2.5 stars and rounded up because it had SO much potential. The concept was interesting: two vastly different neighbors attempt a relationship. A young son is introduced to this mix. Parents interfere. Friends give input. Sounds like a good storyline. But the story falls apart. It is not realistic and too much suspension of disbelief is expected from the reader. I could not buy into the premise and I felt insulted for Skylar when being with her was such a sacrifice for Parker. There are a lot of loose threads at the book’s end. What happens to Parker’s ex? What happens to Parker’s son? Do Parker’s parents ever come around? Why is his mom such a horrible human being? What happens to Skylar’s living arrangements? Where did her things go? Does Parker become resentful after giving up his precious freedom via his “ultimate sacrifice?” Who knows? I no longer care.
Parker and Skylar are those characters that have strong personalities and they bicker back and forth, but you know its also part of their chemistry. Parker is a Marine that is home for PT after an injury while deployed. He throws parties every night driving his neighbor Skylar crazy with all the noise. What everyone doesn't know is that he has had a crush on her for awhile. Everything changes the night Skylar is working and she stabs herself in her hand with a tool and Parker takes her to the hospital.
The thing that is problematic for them is a one night stand of Parker's shows up with a 3 year old boy and says that it is his. Well in the meantime she is vandalizing Skylar's work, turns his mom against her, and generally makes her life harder. Skylar has enough, gets hurt, and just leaves. Parker is willing to do whatever it takes to get her back.
This book was OK, it wasn't great. I really didn't care for Parker's mom. She was too focused on the fact that OK here is this woman she, is the mother of your grandson, and you need to be a family. It didn't matter to her how Parker felt about her or what kind of woman or mother she is. Parker is a great guy and does what it takes to take care of the people he cares about. I feel that his sons mother did what she could to sabotage not only Skylar but also Parker. In the end I'm glad that Skylar told Parker the truth about her past and he stands up for her to his parents. Like I said this book was OK, just not great.
Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review
This has a few tropes today I enjoy just not sure I enjoy them altogether. The premise of the story was cute and made me keep reading. Enemies to lovers, neighbors to loves, fake fiancé… at times I feel like the author couldn’t make up her mind with which tripe she wanted so she through them all in. That being said the writing was good and the characters and story line flowed very well. Parker is a marine so lives next door to Skylar who is a craftsman/wood worker. He is constantly annoying her by having parties, super loud guests, people parking in her driveway, you name he’s done it. She ignores him though, instead of feeding into his crap. When they do exchange words you can feel the sexual tension. Parker’s ex shows up with a kid saying it’s his… that’s when the fake fiancé comes into play, i couldn’t get into this trope. He just throws skylar in this without talking to her first. I never quite got why he had to fake a fiancé, which is another reason why this trope didn’t really set well with me. Skylar just went along with this… which rubbed me the wrong way. Why? She just lets him pretty much walk so over her. This was an easy read. Not something I would read again but would recommend it if you like multi tropes of this type. Received an Arc copy from NetGalley for an honest review.
Parker Jax is not thrilled to be on forced medical leave while recovering from an injury, the sooner he recovers the sooner he can return to work. When he sees Skylar Radford he's not sure he'll be able to control himself, she consumes his thoughts.
Skylar Radford is excited that her neighbor has returned but she can't deal with his rowdy and loud gatherings. While she secretly wishes he would consume her rather than the rotating flavors through his revolving front door. Will she finally give in to her thoughts or keep the banter flowing?
This enemies to lovers, forced proximity has A Harley, rowdy neighbors, tattoos, a Recon Marine, a woodworker and a fake engagement. Just when you think you know what's going to happen a face from Parker's past shows up that changes everything?
They both have secrets in their past that could threaten any connection they may have between them, will Skylar be brave enough to put herself first and protect her heart? If they can learn to trust each other they may discover that their pretend romance wasn't so difficult to fake. The feelings between them could be the start to something wonderful.
This spicy story has trigger content of drug addiction, loss, and infidelity.
I received an advance reader copy for an honest and fair review.
First of all I want to thank the author for honoring a military family. I’m beyond disappointed that the majority if not all of the books in the genre end with the military person giving up his job. I’m glad that the author showed that one can be in the service and have a family. The book was a good read however it’s a shame that we had to wait almost till the end to move beyond the cliché of the fake fiancée and the unfit baby mama. What happened to Skylar in her past, her pain then and now, having to relieve the loss of her son every day whilst taking care of a neglected child, those topics were worth more pages than they got. I also found it frustrating that we didn’t have more details on what Skylar looked like. Dark skin and fluffy curls is a bit light on the details. It also bothered me that she was “whitewashed”. I liked how Parker stood up for her with his parents, however it was irritating that the real issue that his mother had with Skylar wasn’t addressed. The ending was also rushed. From when they got engaged, to living together, to having sole custody to him getting deployed and her basically raising Cullen, all topics that I would have liked to read about.
I really liked the story, the little boy Cullen made it even more so he was so sweet and in need of parental love, particularly since his mom was on drugs and selfish. Neighbors, he the annoying one constantly throwing parties when home from deployment and she the at home woodworking professional who got the shaft from those parties by way of party guests blocking her in and trash thrown over her fence. Even so, their chemistry is off the charts and once Parker has the opportunity to show more of himself and finagle his way into staying with Skylar, their "fake" relationship takes off in ways that are unexpected for both of them. I smiled and laughed and was along for the ride. I couldn't understand Parker's mom in particular and how adamant she was about Parker having a life and family with Gemma without knowing more of the facts, but then again that's how family is sometimes when they see a future for you that you don't see or even want for yourself.
There were some issues with the quality of the book, certain inconsistencies that seemed like they many have been the result of editing that wasn't carried throughout the book. The name Brodie was in there in place of Parker in one instance which was a glaring mistake.
Parker is a marine and is home from deployment. He was injured during their last op and is doing physical therapy. Skylar creates with wood. Her pieces are beautiful. Her next door neighbor drives her crazy when he's home from deployment, with his wild and loud parties the half naked women and her driveway being used as a parking lot. She also has the and hots for said marine... Parker is in lust with his neighbor, Skylar. A woman shows up with a baby saying he's the father so he allows them to stay in his house with the ruse that Skylar is his fiance. He's also hoping that scratching his itch will help get her out of his system by the time his PT releases him to active duty Skylar agrees to help him so she goes along with the ruse. What happens when feelings go deep? Will Skylar allow herself to be happy or will her past being her down again?
I enjoyed this book a lot. Parker and Skylar were such lovable characters. Although Parker was so frustrating at times. Sometimes he knew how shady and a liar Gemma was and other times he turned a blind eye, it was kind of weird and felt like he had to be naive to her wrongdoings for there to be conflict. That Gemma and his mother were the absolute worst. This was a cute story, and I enjoyed reading it. I just wished it gave us more details. I feel like there were a lot of things that happened that we didn’t see that made me go “huh, when did that happen?!”. Also, I never really understood why his mother acted the way she did, I wish that would’ve been explained more. Overall I enjoyed the story and recommend the book.
Skylar and Parker set each other on edge from the moment they played eyes on each other. It started out as a ruse but in reality it wasn't fake at all. The pain and anguish Skylar carried in her heart made her going along with the lie much more selfless than anyone.I As a mom I can't imagine getting over such a tragedy but love can heal so much. They made such a wonderful couple and even in their fear and doubts they eventually decided that their was worth it. The fear and unknown feels so daunting and yet love prevails. I loved the fellow Marines and their total open arms and love in friendship with Skyler. They knew she took the time to know and see Parker for who he was. It was beautiful and fun read.
The story of Parker, Skyler and Cullen with the short stints of the marine brothers and Rylee was good. At first I liked where they were going with Skyler and Parker growing closer and I liked how they were interlocking Cullen into the story of being the adorable little boy who gets a mama, but Parker taking a one night stand’s word over a woman he was addicted to, pushed me into , he’s too stupid to be with a woman like Skyler and deserved to be kicked to the curb. The slight twists and turns with the Come to Jesus moment between Rylee and the brothers made me want to see more of the supporting characters than the main ones which detracted me from the story.
