Ambushers? An invading army? Your own inner demons?

Deep in the mountains, the Oncoming Storm finally finds the other Storm Casters. However, learning to control her powers turns out to be more difficult than she expected. In order to improve, she needs someone to train her but that comes at a cost.

On the other side of the continent, the stars elves are marching. When they threaten to take over one of the only unoccupied cities left, the Oncoming Storm gets an offer she can't refuse: rescue an important advisor and she will get the Storm Caster teacher she sorely needs.

Outnumbered and up against an enemy who will stop at nothing, the Oncoming Storm and her friends are fighting a losing battle. If they fail, one of the last free cities will fall and the Oncoming Storm will lose her chance to master her powers. Can they outsmart the invaders before it's too late?

A-freaking-mazing. It was wild from start to finish. I seriously can’t get enough of Elaran, Storm and Shade and their growing relationship. My heart wants to explode just reading the very short glimpses of Shade loving his little brother and I need more of it. Shade and Elaran’s growing “bromance” is everything. It didn’t take long for them to become protective of each other.

A new character, Marcus, a storm caster is introduced and I wast sure what to make of him at first and hated the possibility of him coming in between Shade and Storm. That didn’t necessarily happen thank goodness. I liked him more further into the book.

5 stars!

The Oncoming Storm and her band of friends travel some more and scheme their way forward. They are challenged and everything isn't as easy as they thought.

We finally get a more descriptive background story to the Storm powers. That also includes som new characters with the same abilities.

Storm is evolving in this book. Coming back from the last one that riuned her and learing about her powers. And also being honest with to herself about her feelings. The blackness in her heart is starting to disappear.

On to the next!

Did I mention that I loved this book? The writing, the relationships, the humour and all the other emotions stirring.

TITLE: A Storm of Mist and Thunder
AUTHOR: Marion Blackwood
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
GENRE: YA Fantasy
SERIES: The Oncoming Storm - 5/7
CAWPILE: 7.43

'"𝐘𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐦 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐝. 𝐘𝐨𝐮'𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐞'"

Another solid installment in this wonderful series. I feel like in this book we really discover more about the direction the final books are going to take. Plot points and villains are finalised and I’m excited to see how they will all play out in the last two, as Marion has kindly accepted me into her ARC team!! Thank you so much :)

Back to it, the characters are still great. I’m not sure if I preferred the focus just being on Storm, Shade and Elaran, because we get (nearly) the whole squad back together and they remain my favourites, along with Haela. I didn’t really love Marcus that much but I thought the twist with him at the end was cool.

We get to see new parts of the world here. However, I kinda want to go back to our original setting, as, Idk why, but I’m missing it. I hope we get to see Edward and Faye before the series come to its close in April.

One slight negative I have with this one is I wanted a little more development in the romance department. However, by the end, I was super happy and rooting for them.

So, you need to start this series basically because it’s awesome!

“Don’t you ever get tired of putting blades to my throat?”
“Oh, but you make it so easy,” he repeated back at me while his lips curled upwards in a teasing smile.”

Another breathtaking part of the Oncoming Storm series! Wow, this author never fails to amaze me! I’m incredibly thankful and happy that I got to read this earlier since it was absolutely mind blowing and exciting and addictive and EVERYTHING. If you don’t already know, I’ve been crushing over Storm since book one and this one just made her my favorite female character ever since she’s an absolute badass and has a very strong and unbreakable personality. Give me all the Storm content in the world and I guarantee you that I’ll never get bored of her. As for Shade, our hot assassin, I still love him so damn much but Storm still takes the throne. And goddamit, THAT ONE SCENE!!! I need moreeee!! This book took a very enjoyable turn, I loved getting to see the characters in new adventures and I loved getting to know more of this world.

And there’s no comment on the writing style, it’s just so much fun and easy to read. Absolutely delightful!! I feel like I can’t recommend this series enough. If you love action filled, full of adventure and knife-to-throat enemies to lovers books, this series is the perfect one to go with!

Note: Thank you to the author for accepting me to her arc team and for sending me an early arc of the book.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

These books continue to get better and better with each installment! It’s such a wonderful feeling to have a series that is so consistent in quality. I’ve yet to find an installment that I couldn’t wait to read! I would babble on in detail but as with all my reviews, I’ll keep it spoiler-free because you absolutely should read this for yourself!

Once again, the Oncoming Storm is thrust into a situation that tries her abilities and her emotions. Unlike last time when it was a sense of finding herself, this time, it’s coming to terms with herself and that includes some aspects of herself that she’s never quite allowed herself to accept.

This book has a lot more setup than the last few have required which can throw you for a loop at first. Luckily though, exploring this remains just as entertaining because the Oncoming Storm continues to have a fascinating viewpoint and her interactions, even when delivering exposition, are brilliant.

This book really delves into the Oncoming Storm’s emotions and I cannot say how much I love that! For all her boasts and claims otherwise, Storm has just as complicated a moral code and emotional range as anyone else. And this time, she might need to finally embrace that.
It’s anything BUT easy!

Once again, 5 out of 5 and I count down the days to the next installment!

After the previous book destroyed me 💔 ... this one put me back together again. I love Storm, Shade, and Elaran working together, I liked the new guy Marcus, and it was great also to have the twins along for this ride, even if they were quite on the background for me. It was quite a thrilling adventure, presenting many obstacles for our group of misfits to conquer. And some surprises!

"You're not a dim candle flickering in the wind. You're a wildfire".

Yes, you are, Storm. You're such a kickass protagonist, and I quite adore you, you little black-hearted thief 🖤
Now that Storm's got what she wanted, it'll be interesting to see how things proceed. The next book sounds quite ominous for Storm, so I'm eager to find out.

Another solid book/read. I fully recommend this series. It's awesome.

My black-hearted thief. My cold-hearted assassin.

I just finished this book and I have so many feelings. First of all, Storm is my queen and I love love love that we get to see her evolve with every adventure she goes on. We keep learning more about her and her powers, which I absolutely love. Second of all, I loved Marcus! He was such a fun new character now that Liam has settled down. And lastly: HOW DARE YOU GIVING ME SO MUCH HOPE AND FEELINGS FOR SHADE AND STORM AND THEN CRUSHING IT!!!

I felt yet again like I was running over the rooftops with Storm, shooting arrows with Elaran and planning new way to overthrow nations with Shade. I cannot wait until the next one comes out!

Once again Marions writing has blown me away, which isn’t a surprise considering how great the start of this series is! I live for the growth in each character and the ever changing landscape that Storm travels through. We get to see more of her world and the challenges she faced as she comes to terms with who she is

Cant wait for the next release and to see how this series wraps up 😍 perfect for those who have read ToG by Sarah J Maas

Storm
Goodness she keeps commenting internally on how muscular Marcus is. Don't do this to me book. What concerns me is that maybe he's already talked more than Shade has. And sometimes that means that the more talking one will be the love interest.

7 chapters before she even mentions him.

So he might be wooing someone... : C

These two...

I love these characters, this time Haela is going on the adventure!

Yay, Shade is going too. I love this story... and with Haela who encourages their flirting.

'Every time I went somewhere on this bloody continent, I had to explain that the Oncoming Storm actually was my real name. They accepted ridiculous names like Nimlithil without question but were tripped up by something as easily pronounced as mine. Such nonsense.'

Eelaran has honor... Marcus has morals? Hmm

"It's just... I think we all have a bit of a hard time believing you can pull of being submissive and charming to someone.' - Haela to Storm.

Of course, Shade thinks there is something between her and Marcus.

I am noticing that book 5 is a lot more world and plot heavy. Not as much talking and relational developments.

I love that their fighting it how they flirt. They're both fully using their skill on each other and you know that they're enjoying it.

Wow... slowest of slowest of slowest...

So many things happened in this book... can I even summarize? She found her people to teach her, she was sent to get Malor, they convinced a whore house to sneak them in to the castle, … what happened after that? I don't even know. The white mist... the harbor explosion... the star elves removing pain from people... the lady in blue - trying to woo her but she wanted Marcus not Shade... sneaking into the red castle and finding the king but he's against them. They get locked up but Illeasia frees them, then Malor helps them out.... then they finally go to leave the red city and Marcellus, Marcus' father shows up and then dies... then they're chased out by an army... then the Assassins and the storm people show up and scare off the star elves that advanced on them after that...

....then Shade and Storm, what the heck is going on? He keeps kissing her and she keeps believing they're on the same page about not being together...

This is a hangover book, for sure. I feel... like I'm not sure what I read... maybe because I read so much in a day. It was less satisfying than I was expecting and it didn't meet my expectations of what I wanted in this book. Maybe the too slow slow burn is a factor in that.

4.5, rounding down.

Ranking:

Book 1 for the introduction to her and her world. Still tops. She meets Shade and the Elves, and kills the king.

Book 4 for the star elves, the emotional manipulation, and her and Shade, finally! The Queen tries to manipulate her into giving up her magic and her pain.

Book 3 for just an enjoyable story. The plot for Shade to become general. Intro to Pernula. Shade is the lost prince.

Book 2 slightly lower because her adventures around her own city were slightly less interesting than the other locations. Someone unknown is trying to kill her. She kills innocents to save Liam.

Book 5 because so much happened and yet so little relational development... Someone unknown is trying to kill the group, the city is overtaken by the Queen who removes pain.

We last left Storm on a trip to find the Ashaana - secretive individuals with the power to call forth storms - so that she could finally master her powers. With the help of a star elf’s directions, Storm and the wood elves from Tkeideru reach their hidden camp deep in the forest. Immediately, Storm is welcomed and ushered into training, while her friends make alliances with the other elves of the forest. But danger arises when the star elves march on Sker - one of the last free cities on the continent.

Once again, readers are treated to a sassy, action-filled, and emotional expansion to Storm’s story. While retaining all her typical wit and skepticism to others (really, the whole world), in this installment Storm also battles her greatest enemy: herself. In book four we watched her struggle to contain her powers, nearly hurting Elaran and Shade in the process, and now she has a fear of hurting her friends with her powers. This hesitation causes her to hold back and not tap into her full potential as a Storm Caster.

She doesn’t, however, face this challenge alone. Aided by Marcus, a fellow Ashaana, and Morgora, an elder at the Storm Caster camp, the Oncoming Storm learns about what she can do with her powers and is gradually coaxed on by both of them to improve. But it’s not until she reaches Sker, on a mission from Morgora to protect someone named Malor, that Storm comes into her full powers.

What I loved in this book was how Blackwood demonstrated the star elves’ full effect on others - all their underhanded trickery and determination to generate ‘converters’ are put on full display. And of course, our determined crew must put a stop to the star elves’ schemes. Naturally, in the typical Oncoming Storm series fashion, this involves explosions, sword fights, and awesome escape scenes. All well executed and believable, Blackwood’s writing takes you right into the heart of the battle and makes you feel like your dodging and fighting alongside Storm and her comrades.

We were also treated to a bit more romance in this book! It’s no secret now that Storm and Shade have feelings for each other - no matter how many fights or insults they use to hide it. I like (finally) seeing the softer side of both of them and the determination Storm and Shade have to keep each other safe. It’s a strange balance they’ve struck, but their reasons for caring while keeping distance make sense.

Finally, there’s more to come! The star elves haven’t been defeated, and true danger is closer than ever before. I’m certainly looking forward to where Storm goes next!

⛈🌀A Storm of Mist and Thunder - Oncoming Storm book #5 - Review🌀⛈

Couple: Storm and Shade

Author: Marion Blackwood

Tropes: frenemy to lover, PNR, epic quests, fantasy romance, guild romance, spy-thieves-assassins

Review: Book 5 takes us to the Storm Caster's island. For everyone who was waiting for Storm to learn about her identity and mysterious 'darkness' this is where we learn about it! Storm embarks on a mission to learn about her powers and train with other Stormcasters in order to be able to fight in her upcoming battles. While there she learns more about the 'Lost Island' history and the Star Elves. She also meets new friends and starts a quest to receive training from one of the elders at the camp.

This book picks up on the **incredible** amount of TENSION between Storm, Shade and Marcus (a new stormcaster). I laughed my way through a lot of scenes because Storm is oblivious to Marcus' crush on her. I also found Shade the most endearing character in this book because he truly wants to help Storm grow into her own force of nature (LOL). I enjoyed reading this adventure because we see the war torn areas and how the Star Elves are corrupting populations of people.

Storm of Mist and Thunder' is also different since it is the first book where Storm begins to initiate contact with Shade and express her feelings (even while denying wanting to lead a gang herself). I found the 'triangle' she finds herself comical because everyone else can see from a mile away how her and Shade are but poor Marcus never takes the hint.

🌀⛈SPOILERS⛈🌀

⛈This book has a few heated scenes with Shade and Storm. We see them give into each other while also trying to stay at arms length since Shade wants to marry someone powerful. Even though this dilemma presents itself it is also painfully obvious that the two will end up together since they are just too similar! This book also delves into the history of the Star Elf war and gives us new characters in the form of 'dragons' and elders.

Rating: 10/10; the chemistry begins!!

Once again, I would like to say a huge, massive thank you to Marion for providing me with an ARC for this book, in exchange for my honest review.

To begin with, I need to point out that finding this series has been one of the best things to happen to me in 2020. I came across book 1 in one of my first ever NoShelfControl book boxes and decided to just take the plunge and give it a read. And now I've not looked back. Marion's writing style just flows so wonderfully, and is such a pleasure to read.

Now moving on to the main part. Keep in mind, if you haven't read the previous books in this series, my review may be a bit spoilery simply because it carries on from major plot points.

The Oncoming Storm has finally found her people, and is ready to learn to control the rumbling storm. Except this wouldn't be a Storm book if things didn't turn into a sh*t storm.... again. We meet a few new key players, as well as our favourites making their grand reappearance (to be fair, it's only been a book since we last saw them, but ya know). The Star Elves are back with a vengeance, and I'm honestly sitting on the edge of my seat, holding my breath while I wait to see how things turn out. I like that things are a little drawn out, while also not being unnecessarily vague - the plot points that should be held off for now have been, and it leaves you waiting for the next book.

Now, I just have to say.... I LOVE SHADE SO DANG MUCH, and this man making his move on Storm in front of everyone had me squealing rather loudly. This slow burn enemies-to-lovers has my heart in its clutches, and I'm here for it. Their relationship is definitely one of my favourite developments, and I need the last few books desperately. Also my poor baby Elaran, I'm glad he got to see the princess, even if just for a few stolen moments.

ALSO THE PURE SATISFACTION I GOT FROM A CERTAIN SOMEONE'S DEATH AT THE END... UNREAL!

If you haven't given this series a go, you really should because it's worth it.

The adventures of The Oncoming Storm continues, Book 5, and I couldn't be more glad. What a lovely gift on the holidays, revisiting these wonderfully written friends and sharing in a new adventure. Again, this is an ideal series for fans of fantasy and people who have a soft spot for snarky thieves/rogues (which I 100% do!).

We rejoin Storm and her friends in the home of the mountain elves, where they finally find the mysterious Storm Casters. At last, Storm will learn to understand and wield her mysterious powers. We make a new friend, Marcus, a handsome Storm Caster who shows Storm the ropes (and might make a certain Master Assassin a wee bit jealous?).

But of course, there's more. The Star Elves are on the prowl again and ready to take over another city. Cue Storm and company moving in for a rescue mission to save a potential ally while scheming to halt the Star Elves' progress. And of course there is tension, the growth of several characters and their relationships, and further hints that Storm is filled with all sorts of new emotions and motives she's still becoming accustomed to after her rough youth. So many plans and good intentions, but of course nothing works out as intended... but that's part of the fun!

If you haven't started this series yet, then hop on back to Book 1. For fans like me, absolutely pick this one up and get ready for Book 6. As always, I am eager for more and ready to ride with Storm through whatever mad adventure she undertakes next.

I cannot say enough good things about The Oncoming Storm. I have genuinely fallen in love with her as a character and I really find myself wanting her to save the day each and every time.

With this being the 5th book, I thought I knew where we were heading with the story, Storm would develop her powers more and we would watch her save everyones back sides. Well im glad that I was wrong, Blackwood has such creativity and is still able to completely surprise us book after book.

I felt a strong family vibe in this book, all the characters have been together for so long that they really blend well together and truly are their own little family group. The new addition, our storm chaser Marcus, was a nice addition to the group, and I loved the fact he brought out Shades jealous side.

I know this isn't a romance novel and that the main focus is on our bad ass girl Storm, but I need more !!!!! I am obsessed with the vibes between her and Shade and I just need them to get together and be the worlds best power couple !! The sneaky moments between the two were my favourite parts of all !!

I cannot recommend this series enough and I was lucky enough to get an early Christmas present when I received an early copy of the book as part of Marion's ACR team in exchange for an honest review.

I am so excited for the next part in the story !!

There are so many things I really want to say about this book, this series, this author....I doubt I could fit it into this review!

Storm is my hero! Morally grey but deep down she's got a heart of gold (a black heart perhaps but there's definitely gold laced through it!).
And Shade?! Geez! The sexual tension between the 2 of them could cut solid steel with all those sharp edges!

Going into the book, I was expecting to see Storm settle in place for a bit and learn more about her powers... but no! After meeting with others like herself, she's drawn once again, into a mad plot to rescue someone from the power hungry Star elves, alongside Shade, Marcus, Elaran, Haela and Haemir. Upon arrival at the Red city of Sker their daily troubles start in earnest... again!

This is a series that just gets better with each book, the characters grow, friendships blossom, enemies become bigger and more deadly. Alliances develop and the world gets bigger and more defined, while the plot just thickens like a well made, sweet jelly setting.
I seriously cannot praise Marion enough for this series that continues to keep me entertained with every single page I turn. It leaves me itching to get my hands on the next book the second I finish the last page! Can't wait for more!!

If you haven’t read the first book in the Oncoming Storm series then all I can say is that you are missing out on some of the best writing, world building, plot driving reading that is available. This is the gift 2020 needed.

Book five was everything and more than I expected coming into the next instalment of this series. We continue to follow Storm and her quest to find out what her powers are and where they come from. Not only do we get to me some knew Storm Casters but we are joined by our favourite Elves!

Thought you were done with the Star Elves? Think again! The continuation of the story plot is something I love about this series. We meet old characters once again and the political strategies at play are a work of art.

While romance isn’t the main focus, the moments we have are sequel worthy and made my heart race with giddiness. Will Shade and Storm ever become a couple?! I’m dying to to know! But their moments together are enough to keep me going but always wanting more!

I could talk about this book all day! Five stars for this book and I honestly can’t wait for you to all read it. Available 28th December - the perfect book to start 2021 with.

Another 5 star addition to the Oncoming Storm saga. I just could not stop reading this. There's still plenty of banter and snark to be enjoyed in this book, although I did find it had a more serious undertone than previous books. I honestly don't think it's common to find a series where this far in, the quality of the books are still phenomenal. Normally the characters would have grown stagnant, and seem like the author is trying to stretch the story out, but this is definitely not the case with the Oncoming Storm. Storm and her friends are still developing as characters, and the plot and pacing just make sense. It doesn't feel like the series is being rushed nor dragged out, but just naturally flowing. I will be honest, this series has blown my expectations out of the park. I'm excited to continue reading about Storm's adventures, but I'm dreading the end of her story. Definitely read this series :)

Love the consiste anti-heroes

I do like how consistent her characters are. It was a little weird how many people openly tell the main character how plain she is, then she has two hot guys chasing after her. Took me awhile to realize how, at least her, “So-not-into-traditional- Happily-Ever-After (HEE)” love interest, the relationship was consistent with his character and interests (She’s definitely useful to him and tough to keep on side). He also probably does find her character intriguing. Her other love interest might not have met a girl near his age in awhile, but Storm is incompatible with a traditional HEE love interest anyways. I appreciate that the book is positively murderous yet in terms of sex relatively clean. Why break the power of publishing houses if not to end needless correlations. Anyways, enjoying the series.

Marion Blackwood is one of my favorite author who NEVER disappoints me. A Storm of Mist and Thunder is an absolute triumph. From the very first chapter, the story pulls you into a world brimming with danger, magic, and emotional depth. Blackwood’s writing is vivid and immersive, painting every scene with cinematic clarity while keeping the pace sharp and addictive.
The characters are complex, flawed, and deeply compelling—each carrying secrets and motivations that make every interaction crackle with tension. Storm's adventures are a blend of high-stakes and slow-burn romance ( Shade). Richly layered worldbuilding makes this book impossible to put down. Every time I hit a reading slump, and I just cannot find anything for my interest, I pick a book from Marion.
A must-read for fantasy lovers and an unforgettable addition to Marion Blackwood’s universe.

TLDR - my heart goes out to storm and her struggles. She’s a warrior ❤️ -

So I thought maybe I’d love the crew being back together or even the knew characters/relationships but honestly I loved most the little struggles that Storm had and her trying to figure it out. She is probably one of my favourite main characters in a long time. I just never get sick of her.

I would’ve thought we’d have a little more tension in this book and was a little disappointed we didn’t get as much seeing as how the last book left off but I love Storm so much I barely mind.

I’m so glad this series is such a winner for me. I don’t read as much YA anymore and going back to some non spicy not romantic fantasy is not even bad if this series is the standard

Surprise

Storm and her friends are off getting into trouble again. Storm has been sent on a mission before she can be trained. Shade has his own mission and agenda, so off they all go.
The first half of this book was a little slow going for me and I struggled to get into it. But the overall story and the surprises made me enjoy the book.
Like the previous book, I didn't see that coming...twice. The first moment, I facepalmed. I really should have seen that one coming. The second I had to put my book down and said, "what?!?". I love when I don't predict everything in a story.

another solid 3.5 KU
raced through this
I did find this one more chaotic than planned but still fun, and nothing annoying- which is actually high praise.
A random point- I like that the FMC struggles in her physical altercations with 'the bad guys' rather than being some super perfect ninja/ warrior type- she is a thief, who is good with knives, not a super well trained warrior- so I like that little bit of reality in there.
I am not giving this higher ratings- when really I could, its just that this is good not excellent, it is well written, but not polished to a high shine, it is interesting, but not groundbreaking, its overall a fun little retreat
will read on

Absolutely incredible, perfect in every way, and an amazing addition to this spectacular series! After reading the first four books in this series, I wasn't sure the story could get any better, but my expectations have been exceeded. Perfectly blending an action packed storyline with twists and turns, snarky banter, and a few lines to keep us stifling our laughter. Honestly cannot wait to see how the story continues 😀

Better and better

It's a good thing they always have backup plans. Storm is almost killed multiple times per book. She is the luckiest, unlucky person ever. I am getting frustrated with the Storm/Shade situation. Do or don't, but don't drag out forward and backward for six books. That is my only complaint. I love the fast paced action, the creativity of the scenarios the author brings to life. On to book six.

Another goodie

This series is just a very simple easy read. I enjoy following The Oncoming Storm's journey. Im excited to see how her relationship with Shade plays out at the end of the book series. I also cant wait for them to get rid of Queen N. and my guess is they get the princess to overthrow her mom and then they all will live happily ever after(with a huge dose of chaos) hehe thats my prediction. 😁

I was super excited to get this one and start it. I love Storm as a character and couldn't wait to see where this one went since finally we were going to go see more about the storm casters. I really couldn't wait to see what they were all about. I will say that you really have to have read all the other books to really understand everything that is happening in this one.

She’s done it! She’s finally found the Storm Casters! Now Storm only has to learn to harness her powers, easy right? Just when she thinks she’s where she needs to be, Strom is pulled into yet another conflict, this one in a new kingdom she’s never seen before.

Blackwood continues Storm’s saga as she struggles to overcome the trauma from the Star Elves and learns what it means to be Ashaana.

Mhm mhm mhm. There’s just so much adventure and action packed into these books it’s impossible to not like them. Im obsessed with the relationships that are forming in the little circle of friends and how close they’re all getting to each other. Yay for found family troupe!!

I would've rated this installment five stars just for Marcus because I love him and what he brings to the table as the most recent addition to our ragtag crew, but we also got to have the entirety of the OGs together and I was stoked. I keep excepting their to be characters I don't like and there just isn't. The twists and turns never stop coming and I cannot get enough.
