To write or not to write, the author dilemma of 2020. Certainly, life has become stranger than fiction, so eleven Appalachian authors gathered their courage and dug deep to present a flowing anthology of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry inspired by Covid-19 or rewritten during the pandemic. Here reside near-autobiographical tales of hardscrabble mountain education, plus familial and societal laments. Even a dragon hides amidst the pages. It’s a well-knit, often emotional read of reflection, eyeing our present, and looking ahead. All is not lost. No, some things have merely been Shelved.
Wow! What a gem of a book! A collection of short stories, autobiographical thoughts and poems from various authors together in a slim volume for the 2020 pandemic. The sub title, Appalachian Resilience Amid Covid-19 just tells you where these authors hail from but the stories told represent everyone. Sad and sweet, hints of paranormal in some stories, tears, joy and hope. I can’t pick just one story as it wouldn’t be fair and basically impossible because every single entry are five star! Shelved should make its way into everyone’s hands and at 138 pages, it won’t take you but a day to read but give you a lifetime to remember and most likely re-read again. I know I will! I can not recommend this book more. Please get a copy and settle into some of the best 2020 now 2021 has to offer for literature. You’ll be happy you visited, I promise!
