This Boxset includes two prequel stories that give the reader an insight into the world of the Natura and offer wonderful background information for later events. Short in length, but rich in information, with interesting plots and relatable characters, they are an amazing introduction to the series. “The Mistake” & “The Birthday” relate respectively Aleron’s and Elspeth’s background stories and their impact in the events of the first full installment of the series “The Call of Fire” and are both fantastic reads on their own.
“The Mistake” is a very good crafted prequel that excels in explaining the circumstances that brought Aleron to the situation he will find himself in the next installment in the Series.
Aleron Jacques Foussé has it all….. wonderful family, lovely girlfriend, good grades and a bright future in sight. As the first-born son of the leader of the Elite One, the enforcement unit of the North American Natura, Aleron idolizes his father and would do anything to help him in any quest he may have. Behind their human appearance the Natura wield one of the four elements (Earth, Air, Fire and Water) and are collectively responsible for the balance of the planet, following the Magnus of each element who is entrusted with a magical cuff that controls the element. The fire cuff is momentarily on the wrong wrist (pun intended) and Aleron’s father ask for his help to remediate this situation. Unfortunately, Aleron makes a disastrous mistake that will change his path forever.
“The Birthday” introduces us to Elspeth Lennox, the granddaughter of the Fire Magnus and Leader of the North American Continent, offering some glimpses of her childhood, teen years and adulthood before the time frame of the main series.
At twelve and only minutes before of her power reveal ceremony, Elspeth is on the top of the world, until everything come crashing down by the revelation that she is a Passive. In the world of the Natura, whose purpose ‘is to fix human environmental mistakes and assist them with their evolutionary progression so the planet will one day return to elemental paradise, and we’ll return to elemental form’, being a Passive is short of sacrilege, and in just the blink of an eye Elspeth looses her Grandpa’s love and respect.
The story develops by showing Elspeth at 17, at 20 and finally at 23, always trying to right the wrong her Grandpa believes to be. Finally, she gets a chance, to regain some of her Grandpa’s respect and save a love one in the process… but perhaps the price to pay is slightly too high.
Sloane Calder’s Natura world is very well-crafted and carefully developed, every detail explained through the pages, without breaking the action at any moments. Both stories have a very balanced pace, neither slow not overly fast, with a good mix of action and character development, the main plot is interwoven with valuable information on the Natura world . The characters are fully fleshed-out, original, coherent, credible and relatable at all times. The plot is full of twists and unexpected turns, that keep the action flowing forward until both absolute fantastic and unexpected outcomes. Calder’s writing style is impeccable, rich, elaborate and intelligent, but still easy to read as the story flows throughout the pages, with a blend of action, drama, romance, with a good dose of humor on top.
