Boston Magic Academies #5

The Hunter's Call

Rate this book
These monster hunters are about to get schooled…

Fighting monsters is all I’ve ever known—and I’ve always fought alone. Until the night I stumble onto an elite monster hunter academy and into the arms of four hottie hunters who not only know the exact Latin classification of the thing trying to eat me, but how to kill it dead.

Then Tyler Perkins, the crazy rich and shamelessly sexy leader of this monster hunting squad, kicks it up a notch. He challenges me to stay. To fight. He’s arrogant and entitled and did I mention gorgeous…and the way he pushes me makes want to push back. Hard.

Tyler and his whole smokin’ hot team tempt me in ways that are far more dangerous than a monster throwdown. I know I should split town—but I can’t.

Because for all its gorgeous old buildings and shiny bright classrooms, something dark, sinister, and deadly is lurking in the shadows of Wellington Academy, waiting to attack…

And I’m just the kind of girl for that job.

**THE HUNTER'S CALL is a slow-burn urban fantasy romance with a fast-talking, sharp-witted heroine, four hunters-in-training hot enough to make your palms sweat, and way too many monsters to hide in a closet. Keep your blades at the ready and dive in!**

The Hunter's Call, by author D.D. Chance, is the first installment in her new series called Monster Hunter Academy. This series is set in the same world as her Twyst Academy series. This series features Nina Cross, a young woman who was taught everything she knows about hunting monsters by her now deceased mother from a young age. After discovering a letter her mother meant to send, Nina travels to Boston in order to search for any remaining family and above all, answers to her mother's past. Curiously, or not, Nina finds that Boston has the same issues as her home of Asheville, North Carolina.

Not for me, but maybe others

I couldn't finish. In the beginning I was cracking up! Heroine started out strong and freaking hilarious a.f. Then it just kinda went downhill to boring town. Nothing really happens for a long time, our H is pretty much having mind monologue and it drags on a bit. About the time it picks up a bit our H seems to have dimmed on her strength as a character. A lot of information is thrown at you about monsters and the Founding families, but yet it was just so freaking boring still. I tried very hard to finish because I liked the storyline, but at 79% the book just lost my interest.

With Twyst Academy, DD Chance showed us the magical ability training aspect of the Boston Supernatural community. Now we get to see the other side. The hunters. And this group is equally as arrogant and weird as the group at Twyst. Must be a requirement in that college community up in Beantown.

Nina Cross was a lone girl who had monsters following her through her whole life, only she didn't know why. So she came to Boston in search of answers; answers about her family and her background. She found way more than she bargained for. She found a group of guys who are as capable as they are hot, and each one is willing to help protect her. But there's something about this group that she believes her mother warned her against. What, she doesn't know.

So, Nina and her band of hunters, formally known as The Collective, have just begun their strange partnership and I think they are going to prove to be equally as much fun as the group at Twyst Academy. I already like Tyler, but now I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to hear what Zach's story is in the next Monster Hunter Academy book!

DD Chance is having a great deal of fun writing these Academy books, and I'm having a great deal of fun reading them. I believe we're in for a wild ride with this new group from The Monster Hunter Academy, and I'm strapped in and ready to go!

Very Well Done, DD Chance! Very Well Done, indeed. Waiting impatiently for book 2!

The first book in this series is off to a great start! Based on the same world as the Twyst series, this series is about the Boston monsters and the hunters that hunt them. The storyline is well built and draws you in. I really loved Tyler and Nina's story and can't wait to read Zacharia and Nina's story next!!

I really wanted to love this. I've given at least 4 stars to everything else this author has written, but this one just didn't do it for me. I don't know if it was too similar to the Twyst series (1 girl, 4 guys, insta-attraction, lone female badass) but I felt like I'd read it before and was a bit disappointed.
That said, Nina is a brilliant heroine. I'd have loved to see more of her before she met the boys. Her life sounds like it would be an incredible series in its own right.
I'll continue with the series, because this author never lets me down but there's just something about this one that didn't grab me right off the bat.

I was provided an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Wow

Spoiler Alert
This was a great follow up to the previous series. I re read them because Jennifer’s books are Always entertaining and I wanted this new read to make more sense when they talk about the academies and its characters. It’s not needed though if u just wanted to jump in on this book in the series.
As usual, we only get a small point of view from the guys, the majority of the book is in Nina’s point of view. She meets the guys by accident, running from monsters. She is basically Monster Bait, and it’s a thing in this book. Usually heralds some kind of Armageddon. Harbinger of death kind of thing. She knows nothing of academies hunting monsters, she just grew up protecting herself at random times of the day from monsters appearing out of no where. None of the guys have seen the amount of monsters she has fought on the daily basis. Everyone kinda thinks they have gone extinct. Unfortunately, it’s more like the monsters were blocked from attacking and her appearance has removed this block. Nina has this instant attraction to the guys, and it’s following the same theme as the previous series. Each book, has her bonding with a new guy in the group. This book was Tyler’s turn. He reminds me of a golden retriever, always smiling and happy and just loves to hold her hand and kiss her. Kissing her at the wishing well, was explosive. Melted the bars? Wish there was more of a description of what happened and why it happened. Nina freaked out though, remembering her mother’s words making her promise to run from the Collective. A group of guys, that would hurt her worse than any monster. There’s a story there, Nina doesn’t know anything about her father, or even her own mother’s history, besides that she was a teacher in Boston when she was younger. Frost, the magic’s defense teacher on hunting monsters is incredibly interested in her lineage, and does a deep dive on her mom Janet Cross. Not finding much about her, it’s telling though, that someone went to a lot of trouble to hide her from the public. They think her mom was a high level witch, so the monster hunting gene must have come from her father. I’m getting the hint that her dad or her mom are from one of the first founding families as well.
The whole auditing classes was a weird pitch to the book. Basically, from what I understood, she’s just wanting to sit on some classes at the university to see if she would be interested in attending. Not actually auditing the class, marking the teacher and its students on the education. She decides to attend after reaching a coffee barista she knew from a coffee shop she frequents, from a monster that dresses with a top hat and old school outfits. This character has been attacking and potentially killing ppl. It was kinda confusing because they don’t really spell it out what the monster character does. He “caps” them. They used that word a few times. Later, it’s explained that they think he’s been killing but have yet to produce bodies. Oh, and he’s after a certain blood line as almost all the characters he “capped” are related even if distantly to one of the first founding families of Boston. After Nina saves the barista, she decides to enrol at the school and be apart of the guys “Collective”. They do an obstacle course and after they finish, she undergoes a magical moment where everything is topsy turvy. Nina’s flakey thoughts where she’s all in, and then panics when she remembers the promise she made to her mom that she would run from the collective, bugs me. Her thoughts, are so wishy washy. Her panic after she woke from the magical moment of her memory when her mother made her promise to run was so vivid that her determination to help take down the monsters by joining the academy and learning more tricks to do so, was completely forgotten. I can’t trust her thoughts to follow through, because she always seemed to back track. Thankfully, she Did become part of the Collective with the guys. So there isn’t any turning back. Can’t wait to read more.

The Hunter's Call is a well-written book and there are elements in this book that were in the author's Twyst Academy series that I liked. The FMC is strong, but has vulnerabilities. This first book focuses primarily on relationship building with one of the guys, while introducing the characters and plot. There's also a mentor who in this case is training the guys as part of their minor. There is some steam so I'd say this is a slow build vs. a slow burn. There's action, along with some humor, and a lot of mystery.

I didn't feel as tuned into the world-building and it felt like some things happened very quickly and with not enough explanation, which left some scenes feeling to me like they were missing something. I don't know if each book in the series will focus primarily on the relationship forming with each guy, or not, but I did not feel like there was enough foundation for the relationship started in this first book. Also, along the same lines of something missing, parts of the story were very vague and I'm guessing that more will be expounded on in later books. I just would have liked to have seen more in this book.

Again, The Hunter's Call is well-written and the characters are interesting. A friend pointed out to me that I might be in the process of slumping, so it's possible that feeling like something was missing in the development and plot poked at my brain more than it normally would. I still liked this book so I'm sticking with 3 stars and I think lovers of paranormal, academy RH may want to give this new series a chance.

The Hunter's Call is the first in the Monster Hunter Academy and is an engaging tale set in the Boston supernatural community. While the trope is similar to others in that there is a no-nonsense, lone badass girl who has been battling something alone all her life who comes across a bunch of hot dudes (in this case academy age) with plenty of experience battling the same thing and feelings develop, DD Chance creates a good story that is well written with interesting characters that the reader can relate to and want to spend time with. There are plenty of angles in the story, from academy politics, to Nina (the badass heroine)'s family background, to the boys background, all while working out what has been going on with the monster situation in Boston.
I enjoyed this first book more than the Twyst Academy series and am looking forward to seeing where DD takes the story. If you enjoy sassy characters, the paranormal, adventure and an interesting plot, then take the plunge into the Monster Hunter Academy series and join the ride.

Nina's a girl who's lived most of her life fighting monsters alone. Her mom tried her best to train Nina, but since her mom's death, Nina's been alone. Nina's mom had ties to Boston, so Nina traveled to Boston to try to find the recipients of a letter her mom spent her entire life writing. While in Boston, the monsters find Nina and she stumbles across Wellington Academy, a school founded to educate monster hunters. Monster Hunting has fallen out of fashion and the school once dedicated to the profession now only offers a minor that's constantly in jeopardy of being cancelled. Nina pairs up with the only four hunter trainees and realizes that, while she's been very lucky so far, she still has a lot to learn. She quickly becomes the newest student at the Monster Hunter Academy.

I enjoyed Nina's story and am looking forward to learning more about her and her mom's background. Like the Twyst series, this story also had four male leads, each bringing their own strengths to the story. This book mostly focuses on Tyler and Nina, but each character is well introduced here. This is a fun, well written story, and I look forward to the next in the series.

This was a great start to the new series. It takes place in the same area as Twyst Academy (including references to the school). If you enjoyed the Twyst Academy series, the Monster’s Call is definitely for you. It can definitely be enjoyable for those that are new to this writer.
Wellington Academy is focused on practical magic, while the school was founded for hunting monsters, the priory of the students is no longer the major. Nina stumbled onto the academy while running from monsters after fighting one of its kind. She isn’t aware of the school nor other monster fighters like herself and has been fighting since she was a child. Her mother recently died and she has come to try locating her family.
I think this was a great start to the new series and look forward to the next book so I can see how Nina and the Monster Hunters progress.

I had read the other series and was happy to see a new one featuring the other magical school.

She has been on her own fighting monsters and now gets the chance to team up with those who have trained for the opportunity. The men she is joining for the battle are very different from one another. Tyler calls to her first but the others are definitely on her radar too.

It was easy to get hooked into the story. There are secrets to uncover about her parents which I am looking forward to discover the answer to as the series continues. I also look forward to learning more about the men and their motivations. There are some real secrets there too.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received.

The Monster Hunter Academy series is a spinoff of D.D. Chances’ Twyst Academy. “The Hunter’s Call” is her first book in this series. As in the Twyst Academy, there is a lone girl and a group of big, burly, mysteries guys, this time from the Monster Hunter Academy. As in the Twyst Academy, the heroine, Nina Cross, is unaware of her talents. Nina is tough and alone, continuously under siege. She happens upon Tyler, a student of the Monster Hunter Academy and from this point the action takes off. Together, Nina, Tyler and the rest of the guys begin their tumultuous journey.

This book is full of excitement. How Nina connects first with Tyler is fun and I cannot wait to read how the action continues and how she connects with the rest of the guys…

I found the series to be interesting, but not quite as good as it could be, mostly because the relationship building was rather flat. These were not a Why Choose in the normal sense. The FMC does end up with the four guys, but each one in their own book, and then the relationship with the others is mostly ignored/not mentioned. So, it's more like serial monogamy. The relationship between her and the guys, and among the guys themselves, could have been so much richer. Perhaps the author wasn't really comfortable writing Why Choose, which usually includes multi-scenes.

Otherwise, the concept was fun. The worldbuilding was rather unique. Loved that it was set in Boston!

After thoroughly enjoying the Twist Academy series, I couldn’t wait to start this one. It did not disappoint! Nina is a fiery heroine with no idea why she attracts monsters. One such attack introduces her to Wellington Academy, AKA the Monster Hunter Academy. Tyler, Liam, Zach and Grim pull her into the fold and she is forced to learn on the fly as monsters threaten the elite magical families. A few similar ties to the theme of Twist Academy but a strong story plot of its own will make this a series to watch!

Loved this story. It has all the elements of the start of an interesting series. Young person not listening to their mother which most young people do not because they have to experience things on their own. But such adventure she is experiencing own her own and with others. The kind that others never have a chance to have. This is truly a once in a life time adventure she may look back on it and have regrets and she may look on it as fond memories or lessons learned, who knows, time will tell. But I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the next story.

A mature peek at a world where monsters are very real, but usually hidden from mortal eyes. Monsters seem to be on the wane in Boston. Wellington Academy has almost given up on their Monster hunting program; the reason for the foundation of the Academy. Along comes a wildcard that may change all the rules.

It’s fun to follow as Nina, a girl who monsters chase comes into the picture. Relationships change, the future of Wellington may well change. Monsters chase and get chased. A fun, fast paced read with a few very adult situations. Can’t wait to read the next!

A great start to a fun action packed paranormal RH. This book is a nice blend of romance, action and "what's happening next?" It's a 5 star review for me because it goes on the re-readable list. I am looking forward to see where the story takes all the characters. Strong and flawed heroine. Interesting and flawed men. A fun story that gets you hooked and invested in both the book and what will happen in the future books. I am looking forward to all the future books in the series, but I am especially looking for the book about Nina and Grim.

Very similar to DD Chance's last Twyst Academy series set in the Boston supernatural community and featuring a reverse harem setup. In this one the orphaned Nina Cross has come to Boston to find her mother's family and learn more about herself. She meets and joins up with 4 young men, seniors at Wellington Academy, a school founded to educate monster hunters but struggling to change its image. And the hunting begins and intensifies. The story is interesting as are the monster descriptions. The author is a talented writer in this genre and I look forward to the next book in the series

The action starts early and the characters quickly draw you in. There is sooo much more to learn about them all. Nina is Hard as nails (on the outside) and determined to flourish no matter what life throws at her. The story flows so well because this world is already established in D.D.s Mage World books - you don't need to read those first (but read them anyway, they are worth it) cant wait for the next book.

I really enjoyed the last academy book and was delighted when I saw this new series which expands in the same world. I think the monster hunter is a unique twist on the paranormal and not a storyline I’ve seen before, though slightly reminiscent of Van Helsing-Esque type of fighting. I really enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next one. I can’t wait to find out more about the mysterious Grimm.

Monster hunters. Great characters, dark gritty mystery surrounds the characters and their school. 4 hot college students trained to hunt at an exclusive school are thrown in with a self taught hunter that stumbles onto the campus. Lots of mysteries! I love mystery's. And scars. I want to know about the scars.

An engaging read. I enjoyed seeing another side of Boston! I liked the link to the Twyst Academy, and seeing another version of School.

I am eager to read the next books in this Series. As always, it is a pleasure to read a D.D. Chance novel!

What a fun Holiday treat to grab for yourself or a friend!:)

I enjoyed this book, so much so, I was taken aback and disappointed when there was no to read! Set in the same world as the Twyst Academy series, there are some minor magical similarities ( it is a world governed by magic laws after all! ) but this has it's own funny, intriguing and joyous plot. Monsters of all sorts, fighting, romance and danger! I would like the next book NOW PLEASE! A recommended escapist read!

I loved reading about Nina and her interaction with Tyler, and his team at Wellington Academy. I love the mystery and slow reveal of Nina's past, and can't wait to find out more about the team. I also love that while it's similar to Ms Chance's previous Twyst Academy series, it is different enough to keep me interested and engaged. If you're looking for a fun read and lead-in to a new series, then this is for you!

This is the first in the new Monster Hunter Academy series and what a great start. I encourage you to get this book. I really liked Nina, she's the right level of sarcasm and wit and is a good strong female lead. Yet another book from this author that draws you in and doesn't let you go until the end. Can't wait for the next instalment.

If you like books with hot male leads and gritty, strong women, then this is for you.

A great first book to kickstart this series. In this series we meet Nina, a lone monster hunter. She has sass and grit in spades, which I love in a main character. She has been fighting monsters alone since childhood, until a search for clues about her family, lead her to Wellington Academy, the only Academy where they train monster hunters. Queue some fast paced action, throw in some red hot romance and I couldn't put this down. If you liked the Twyst Academy series, you will love this.

I love this world!

And especially love this authors writing. It’s witty, funny, sometimes heart wrenching, but always lifelike. Not to mention the setting is Boston which is perfect to capture old magic, secrets and ghosts of the past. Definitely excited for Liam Grim and Zach’s stories!

Sexual attraction to entire team not needed.

I like sci-fi romances. The fact that sexual attraction to all 4 team members was a big turn off for me. The focus should have been on finding one great love thru the trials of banqueting monsters and demons! I am not going to continue series.

This new installment from D.D. Chance was exciting, heart wrenching and left this reader eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Nina is a relatable character who, through excellent character development and storytelling, becomes a strong female lead and someone I couldn’t help but root for. Excellent read!
