Honobu Yonezawa (米澤穂信), Yonezawa Honobu, born 1978) loved making up stories even as a child and began writing fiction at the age of 14. By the time he got to university he was posting stories on his own website. After graduation he continued writing while working in a bookstore, and first got into print in 2001 when Hyoka (Ice Cream), a YA mystery novel he submitted for the Kadokawa School Novel Prize competition, earned an honorable mention. Sayonara yosei (Farewell, Sprite), a critically acclaimed story of the relationship between Japanese high-school boys and a girl from war-torn Yugoslavia, helped cement his reputation when it was published in 2004. Since then he has been a regular presence on lists of the year's best mysteries. Oreta ryukotsu (Broken Keel) won the Mystery Writers of Japan Award for Novels in 2011. Though known especially for his distinctive and fresh blending of the tale of youth with the whodunit, Yonezawa has also made forays into science fiction, as with 2006’s Botorunekku (Bottleneck) and 2007’s Inshitemiru (Try Indulging), a sinister "murder game" story. In 2013 he published the novel Rikashiburu (Recursible). He is a leading figure among Japan's younger generation of mystery writers.
The sixth installment of the Kotenbu series is the last book that had been published so far by the author for this series. This book contain several short stories, almost the same with the fourth book. The difference is, it's more serious therefore more gloomy by default
The title of the books, "Ima sara tsubasa to iwaretemo", or could be roughly translated as "Even though I'm Told Now I Have Wings", is closely related to the last story of the book where our lovely heroine, Chitanda Eru, is facing a crisis in her life and how our hero Oreki Houtarou tried to help her in his own way. The story is simple really, nothing is hard to understand when it comes to the Kotenbu series, but in that simplicity lies a deeper meaning where everything's not rainbow and happily ever after. I praised the author for being able to bring us the story in a form of beautiful writing that flowed so well together
All in all, I think that the Kotenbu series, starting from the first book Hyouka to the last book (the sixth volume), are a fascinating novel series with great characters development throughout the whole story and real conflict that we readers could relate to. This is what makes this series so appealing which making it easy to read and enjoy as well. I almost never fall in love with a character in novel, but when it comes to Kotenbu series I couldn't help but loving all of them because they felt close and real to me, it's like I know them personally
I hope that there will be the next book of this series because it's so beautifully written and I would hate it not being able to see my favorite characters being alive again. And the biggest reason would probably to see whether Oreki and Chitanda could realize their dream together as a team. The romantist in me want to believe in that possibility
"Meskipun sekarang saya dibilang punya sayap, saya bingung."
Overall i enjoyed reading this whole series, selalu menjadi pengalaman membaca yang menyenangkan!
NOOOOOOOOOO This is the last published Kotenbu novel and I am not okay This one is actually a short story collection, the same as volume 4 And out of all the stories my favourites were "The Long Holiday" and the title story "Even Though I'm Told I Have Wings" (which might have made me cry a little bit... a lot) Even if this series hasn't been as neglected as Suzumiya Haruhi I still feel uneasy about never actually reading the end... come on Honobu Yonezawa (and Nagaru Tanigawa) I'm counting on you man... Don't leave me hanging
A collection of six short stories. The school election was rigged, Hōtarō remembers something unusual during his English class in middle school, and Chitanda disappeared.
The title of this book book was captivating me so much that I skipped the fourth and fifth book. In this sixth book, the slice of life parts are stronger, however the stories of Hōtarō's past, and the closing story (the Even Though I'm Told I Now Have Wings) which feels like a loves story so fitting for Hōtarō, make this reading journey worth the while.
I have learned that the city in Hyouka is based on the author's hometown, so throughout the story I felt like wandering that town with Hōtarō. Obviously I'll go back to read the previous books, and it's nice to hear the author will release the seventh book.
“Even if you think that fellow human beings should help each other, others won't necessarily think of you as being worth it. It's not like I wanted anyone to appreciate me. I just never imagined that people thought of me as such an idiot. I won't stay after school anymore. As long as I'm around others, they'll ask me to do something. They probably think I'm an idiot because I always did what they asked without resisting. I don't care about what they think. I just hate being used. Of course, if I have to do it I will. I won't complain at all. But, if it's not necessary... If it turns out it's someone else's responsibility... If I don't have to do it, I won't. I absolutely won't.”

the last published hyouka novel, and I'm already nostalgic for these four characters.
this was more of a collection of stories more than a novel with an overarching mystery, and it focuses on deepening the characters' relationships and their connections and adding to their development. I just want more Chitanda and Oreki content!!!
Hyouka has always been a favorite ever since I was in elementary school. I've watched the anime over and over again and somehow always find something new to appreciate. I just, I can't express how much I love this series.
I decided to finally read one of the books. It chose #6 specifically for the stories that are not on the anime and the title, "Even Though I'm Told I Now Have Wings," which intrigued me. I'm so glad I read this... I'm gonna make a review for each short story because I can.
1. Yang Hilang dari Dalam Kotak I actually really loved the vibes for this one, with Oreki and Satoshi taking a night stroll together, discussing things, and solving mysteries. I find this so calming, and so, I don't know, endearing to me. I could actually see these two on my head exactly like the anime, and idk, this was really something I needed. On to the mystery itself with the election box, it was a little hard to grasp the "rules" of the mystery at first, but after another few pages, you can easily follow along. The key to this case was "the past" and how the world didn't revolve around us. School, which is basically a little world by itself, exists beyond our times as students there, and I don't know why that baffled me so much, but it did. Idk just really loved this chill sort of introduction to the entire book. Loved it. 5/5⭐️
2. Yang Tidak Terpantul di Cermin I liked this one a lot cause Ibara is surprisingly the one who solved the mystery this time (a mystery that involved Oreki's past by that!). This new pov made it seem not like the usual Hyouka episode, which is very interesting to me. Ibara tries to find out why Oreki half-assedly did his middle school parting project (enraging the entire generation in the process lawl). What I like about Ibara is that she's not as "fast" as Oreki on figuring things out, nor is she a database like Satoshi. She just has will and is not afraid to do shit and get it over with (which I can't relate to). I feel like this story would be so much better animated since a lot of it has to do with the project itself (which is hard to imagine exactly in writing). I can imagine how mind boggled I would be If I watch this in the anime.
3. Cerahkah Pegunungan Hari ini? I actually saw this one in the anime, so I already know what was going on lawl. Still, reading it does give a new perspective like what Oreki was thinking the entire time (very fascinating). I don't really have much thought other than that... the mystery is good as always, of course!
4. Karya Legendaris Kami! A more dominant Ibara pov!! Woww I love the Ibara slay in this issue! (Also, a cute moment with Satoshi and Ibara that is just.... GOD, IT'S SO CUTE ME AND WHO?!) I must say, this one was not my favorite out of the whole bunch... the manga club thing was kinda hilarious and outright evil... and the conclusion? Uhmm... yeah, idk, I didn't really like the conclusion that much, actually. But also?? OREKI'S BOOK REVIEW!!! THAT ACTUALLY WAS SO GOOD!! I might even say it's the best part of this entire book cause HOLY HELL I actually loved it so fucking much...... his book review was for the short story by Osamu Dazai "Run, Melos!" I actually read the thing myself to get the story better since I know Hyouka loves to do these silly literature references. IM SO GLAD I DID!! Oreki's review actually blew my mind!! Yonezama Honobu is actually a genius for thinking of this, idk how this man does it. His mind is just so clear.
5. Liburan Panjang WE GOT OREKI'S MOTTO BACSTORY!!! Let me just say: I feel so fucking bad for Oreki man 😭😭 this man gets wronged so many times in his life it's insane.... anyway, this story is about Oreki's elementary school days of him wattering potted plants. Oreki finds out he's tired of being a bootlicker and decided to grow a backbone... I respect that. Also, Chitanda and Oreki cleaned up a shrine together, gawd, why are these kids so cute. ME WHEN???
6. Meski Kau Bilang Aku Punya Sayap The title story! You know, at some point in the middle, when I could roughly see what was going on, I started to realize what the title actually meant and went silent for a bit. I thought the title was just a good brain scracter...... I didn't think the meaning behind it was so....😀 anyways, after figuring out what the title meant, the story really became clear to me. I love the ending with Hotaro meeting Chitanda.... doing the legendary anime scene of door to door confrontation. Woaw... that's just saur cool.......
Khas Oreki, pahlawan tak kasat mata, diam-diam bikin kasus perundungan berbalik 180 derajat.
I enjoyed reading this book much more than I expected. Even Though I'm Told I Now Have Wings could be my number one favorite from the Hyouka series.
In this book, we went deeper to understand each main characters without leaving the typical simplicity of Hyouka series. The reason why Mayaka left Manga Club, the deeper dive-in to Fukube Satoshi's complicated yet endearing self, Oreki's past and the reason behind his infamous life motto, and lastly.. the bittersweet story development from our beloved heroine, Chitanda Eru. (Though the cliffhanger ending might be haunting me from now on.)
I also loved how Yonezawa-sensei subtly inserted the romantic relationship between our two distinguished "couple". Satoshi and Mayaka were undoubtly caring and supporting each other which I found it very endearing. I really hoped they could grow together. And Oreki-Chitanda relationship might be seen stagnant but no, there were so many hints of their romantic sparks here and there. Also, the last story where Oreki really want to punch something after listening to Chitanda's voice was a big revelation for me.
Now, I can only hope that Yonezawa Honobu-sensei will release the 7th book soon. 🥹🤲🏻
PD: CUANDO HOUTAROU DIJO "I'M CURIOUS" QUEDÉ IGUAL DE SHOCKEADA QUE LOS PERSONAJES
Love this one more than the 4th book, probably because the tone is more serious here. Absolutely love the last two stories aaa. It does feel a little like a closure to the series, but I hope there will be the 7th book soon XD
We got to see a side of Houtarou, a bit of Ibara and a lost Chitanda. I can understand the characters better now especially Oreki. THAT ending though. I WANT A CONTINUATION RIGHT NOW!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book is a compilation of short stories, making it very similar in its form to the 4th book of the series: The Doll Who Took a Detour. It is also, quite in the same way, a character-focused book rather than a story-driven one. I personally enjoyed it quite well, especially since two of the six stories are narrated by Ibara who was, since the beginning of the series, the least developed character in my opinion. I will address the negative points at the end. No major spoilers about the mysteries below.
What's missing from the box
This story focuses on there having an issue with the number of votes for deciding the next student council president. This is interesting as we discover a yet unseen side of Satoshi, who proves to be quite intolerant toward injustice, as he thinks that the one taken accountable for this trick is innocent and therefor asks Houtarou for help in proving his point.
The mirror can't reflect
Easily my favorite story of this book. Ibara suddenly remembers an incident that occurred during middle school, in which Oreki was heavily implied and even played the role of the bad guy. She then decides to investigate on this matter. This story both shows us a new side of Oreki and further develops Ibara's character; indeed, she is someone who is really frank and doesn't hesitate to admitting that she was wrong.
Is it sunny out in the mountains?
This story is not interesting at all, except maybe for showing us that Oreki too could be curious about stuff. This story is special as it the only one after the 4th volume that is in the anime adaptation. I therefore think that it was kind of a rushed episode that Honobu Yonezawa wrote really fast upon being asked to. He later decided to include it in this book.
Our legendary volume
This story is once again narrated from Ibara's point of view and deals with the precise reasons for why she left the manga society club. While this provides further insight on Ibara's character, I actually found this story really boring as there is no real mystery.
The long holiday
Oreki suddenly wakes up one morning with far too much energy and decides to go out. He "coincidentally" encounters Chitanda and the reason for his motto "If I won't have to do it, I won't. If I have to do it, I'll do it quick." comes up. While there is no real mystery in this story either (making it quite weak overall), this still provides us with information about Oreki's personality, on top of narrating quite an easily relatable story.
Even though I am told I now have wings
This story is about Oreki helping Ibara to find Chitanda who disappeared when she is supposed to perform in a choir.
Final Thoughts
This book is quite a strange one. It is by far the weakest of the series in term of mystery (only the first two stories could be considered as part of the genre). This however is still interesting because of all the things that we learn about the characters, though I consider the cliffhanger at the end to be a cheap move.
This book is currently the latest book of the series yet the thickest. Oh, not to mention the most expensive. But I think this book is worth the money. I have no regrets reading this.
I have read every single book in this series and each and every time, i always find myself falling in love over and over again. The characters, their journeys, the town, everything! I am utterly in love with every part of this series, even the simplest and most mundane parts.
This book in particular kind of marks the point where we just have to believe that our 4 beloved members can solve their problems and navigate through their lives as usual. We've seen them grow. We've seen them changed. We've seen their rawest parts. And i think that's the most beautiful thing about this series. How mundane it is.
Yonezawa Honobu can combine the simplest words and turn them into something real and beautiful. And that's something to be proud of.
With this book, feeling closely intimate with the characters is inevitable. And that intimacy is timeless. Meaning that 50 years from now, when I somehow find this book and decide to re-read it again, I am confident that it would feel like meeting an old friend. I've known and loved these characters for 13 years. I've grown up with them. And so they will always be familiar to me. Along the way, they've affected some of my perspectives in life and have been a part of me until now. Therefore, there will always be bits and parts of them living inside the person that I am now. The fact that I somehow feel a connection with a few fictional characters written with ink— I think that's one of the most wonderful things about reading a book.
This series makes me happy. The characters make me happy. The town, the weather, the coffee shops in it, they make me happy. I whole-heartedly love this series. And isn't that lovely? I hope everyone else who read this series can understand and feel the same way too.
Just like my review for the previous book, it's now 4 am again and it basically has become a pattern now of finishing these books at this hour. Yet I regret nothing.
Saya menantikan lajutannya, semoga Yonezawa Honobu segera menerbitkan hyouka 7
Meski kamu bilang saya kini punya sepasang sayap.
Ah, pokoknya, sehabis membaca 'Imasara Tsubasa to Iwaretemo', rasanya jadi semakin dekat dengan para tokoh. Sedihnya, giliran udah dekat begini malah harus berpisah dulu sampai nggak tau kapan, haha. Oh iya, cerpen terakhir dan endingnya bagus banget, bener-bener bittersweet.
