A love story is nothing more than the sum of the lovers, so this one is twisted. This is what happens when who you want to be and who you are, don't fu%& with one another.

Mercedes: I know better, and I didn't do better, so now, here we are. But here's the thing, being stupid once does not mean you have to be stupid again. This isn't a fairytale, and I'm no princess, but I'm not a doormat either. If Lochlan Rait doesn't know that, he's about to learn.

Lochlan: I've never wanted anything more than I want Mercedes. Just because I was stupid once doesn't mean I'm going to be stupid now. Mercedes has always been mine. If she doesn't know that, she's about to learn.

CW: rape, drugging of a minor, sexual abuse of a minor, abortion

I did not enjoy this book. At all. I immediately knew I wasn't going to like it when Lochlan took it upon himself to give Mercedes the nickname 'Mercy' after just meeting her. That is a pet peeve of mine. Do not shorten my name or give me a nickname without my permission. That was very white of him. And his reasoning was dumb as hell.

The plot was all over the place. Some parts did not make any sense. The structure of the story didn't make any sense. Where was the romance? Where was the sex? We're supposed to believe that Lochlan and Mercedes has this incredible sexual chemistry and that they basically fall in love at first sight but we get no sexy time?!?!?!?! Just a general description of them having sex? Or a mention of sex in a conversation. That's all we get!?!?!?!

Characters were introduced with no background info as to who they are until 2 or 3 chapters later. WTF!?!?!?! There was literally ZERO reason for that quick chapter in Ashley's POV. ZERO. REASON.

Mercedes and Lochlan were one note characters. Not enough page time was spent on the 2 years that Mercedes and Loch were apart so when they meet up again, I was meh about it. Cause why should I care? The author did not make me care about this couple.

Oh and are we supposed to feel sorry for the football players who had sex with a minor? I hated the way the author handled it. She basically absolved them of rape.

Thanks goodness for August and Connor. The only 2 likeable characters in this book.

Mercedes

Well this story of Mercedes and Lochlan was a surprisingly good read. It not enough steamy love scene but honestly because there so much emotional growth through these two main characters I actually didn't miss it. Give this book a try it has a compelling story and characters. Their is light through pain and I'm glad Mercedes was able to find it.

I feel like I must genuflect in Mercedes’ presence. I realize at the end of the book that she is a better person than I am. Because there is no way on God’s green Earth that I wouldn’t catch a charge for Jules. I would be behind bars with smile.

Mercedes is by far one of the strongest character I’ve read in a long while. She has overcome adversity that would break the average person. Life seems to punch her in the face, stab her in the back, jab her in the throat, knife her in the eye, shank her in the gut, then spit on her face but repeatedly she finds a way to get back up when smacked down WWE style.

Take a bow Mercedes. Because you are the mother f@cking Queen 👑 .

August was our id wrapped up in a fabulous package. He was great comedic relief. If he had a reality show, I’d watch it.

Now Lochlan was not my ideal hero. He stared of as Alpha then dropped down to a beta (or gamma). He somewhat redeemed himself towards the end, but the way he handled Mercedes after the accident left a lot to be desired. He was childish and easily persuaded.

I was tempted to drop the rating by a whole star because they left Jules breathing, but I didn’t want to be petty. Either way, I highly highly highly recommend this book.

Excellent Story!!!

Mercedes was raised by a loving grandmother who sacrificed so that Mercedes could have an excellent education. Julissa (Jules) was the older friend who gave bad advice at every turn, traumatizing Mercedes every step of the way. So when love looked her in the face in the form of Lachlan, it was no surprise to her that it was quickly snatched away...

This is the first book that I have read by Ms. Lola Joy and it will not be my last! Whew! She has written a story with the location of my favorite city, Washington, DC, my hometown! Yes, I am a Washingtonian! Anyway, Ms. Joy has thrown some curves into this story and it was getting better and better as I read it! At first, I did not like Lochlan's cousin, Paul who seems so judgmental. The next book that follows this one is about him so I hope that he gets a reality check! LOL! But, this one is about Lochlan and Mercedes. Mercedes has had a difficult life but girlfriend has persevered and remained strong. Jules who was guiding her in the wrong way, well I am not going to spoil it for readers but I am glad with the ending for Ms. Jules (aka Julissa). I loved the comedy that August brought to the story! He was too funny and protective of Mercedes which was great! I also liked Lochlan's family and how supportive they are of Mercedes, too. Great story!

I was writing a full review for this because this....book has filled me with so much confusion and anger but I give up. I can’t even explain this book because it’s so confusing. I am utterly shocked by how much this book managed to offend and confuse me at the same time. I couldn’t even focus on the romance because everything else was so distracting. The characters are terrible, the plot is weird and the ending confrontation scene with Jules??

You’re telling me, the mother who pimped out her daughter, basically allowed her to be r*ped, and misgendered the only trans character in the book.....gets off with a slap to the face??

And the men who r*ped her get no consequences either? Because they “have daughters”??? Are you kidding me!!

And don’t get me started on the abortion sentiment in here.

Just all around baffled by the choices made here

Shocking but Cute

*****Spoilers*****

Putting the pieces together into a whole is part of the allure but once completed, that puzzle shocks the senses. Lochlan and Mercedes have an instant connection which they act on upon the day they meet, the result a baby, Liam. Loch doesn't know about the baby due to communication misses from his team to Mercedes. Since Loch at the time was a star basketball player who suffered a career ending injury in a car crash not long after, his lawyer cousin tries to pay Mercedes to go away but doesn't disclose her claim that Loch is her baby's father. Loch also doesn't come for Mercedes after seeing a video of her with some football players.

Mercedes is changing her life and has her friend August in her corner. Jules comes around infrequently mad offers Mercedes help here and there but doesn't really seem to have Mercedes's best interests at heart. August hates Jules and refers to her as Satan. Though raised by her grandmother, Jules visits Mercedes occasionally but never for long and is the bad influence older woman for Mercedes. Turns out, Jules is not only Mercedes's mother, but is also the person who set Mercedes up, drugged her, and took the video of her daughter's first sexual encounter with those football players. Imagine the issues with Lochlan having seen that and being church focused.

Once all of the confusion is cleared up, Lochlan is in for fatherhood even though he's missed a year and a half since he didn't know. Lochlan is also in trying to reconnect with the woman he met before his accident. When he learns it Liam, Lochlan is determined to have them both in his life. There are other dramas in this one including an ex-girlfriend but the revelations about Jules are those that make this book gasp worthy.

I came across a snippet from Mercedes on social media and it peaked my interest so I downloaded it. With a dozen other books waiting for me on my TBR list, this book just called to me for some reason, so I made it my next read. I picked up this book with no expectations, and it literally sucked me in from the very first page. I didn't put it down until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer and picked it right back up as soon as my eyes opened again.

I went into this book totally blind. The blurb doesn't give much of anything away and it's for the best. You definitely need to experience this book without any spoilers. It is an emotional story that took some turns that I didn't expect and with one shocker that I never saw coming. Mercedes and Lochlan's story will make you angry. It will make you laugh. It will break your heart and then put it back together again. I loved Mercedes and Lochlan and I'd really like to see more books created in this world. I think that there are definitely some stories to be told with the secondary characters!

Apparently, Lola Joy is a new Author and this is her debut novel but you'd never guess that from this book. This is a very well told story that made me FEEL and I can't wait to see what she writes next!

Tyler Perry movie?

While I tried to get with the story line, it was giving mixed messages. I am not usually a fan of the big rich guy that falls head over heels for the damsel with lots of distress because it comes of unrealistic to me. This book had a lot of that unrealistic unbelievable mixed in there. While, I try to understand the come up story of Mercedes, her choices in life mixed with how Loclan loves her so just seems unrealistic. What I thought was a bright spot and interesting twist in the story was Lochlan's faith and newfound life. I initially I thought a great way to make this book different to show a man from a way of discipline, respect for his beliefs, etc. However this even became confused, and even offensive with how it played out in the book and the character in many ways. If its gonna be brought in, why does Christianity and the people who follow always have to be made a mockery? This is like talking about politics, but its trickier and not to be played with lightly, I don't play games with that. The funny moments with Loch, Connor and August were the highlight for me...real lol moments.

2.4⭐️I should have stuck to my guns and just shelved this book. I only have a few brief observations. The revelations near the end of the book were absolutely shocking, and they came out of nowhere. It was a fair read, but it contained sections that are inexplicably there for no reason I could discern; they simply did nothing to advance the story or enhance it. I loved the characters Mercedes (above all), August, and Connor, but his backstory was not really explored.

I have a big problem with the issues related to Jules and all that occurred in this book. Without divulging too much, Jules and the basketball players went unpunished for their deviousness. As far as Jules is concerned, I would have f*cked the b*tch up and dared her to do a thing about it. Then I would have done it all over again until she BEGGED me to stop.

I prefer books where everyone who deserves it, gets their just comeuppance. Since that didn’t happen here (and it could have), I can’t rate this book any higher. Additionally, the book needs editing. Not a satisfying read for me.

NB: There are triggers that pop up when one least expects them. ‼️

I came across this book by chance while tip tapping through African American authors on Kindle Unlimited and I’m glad for it. My only complaint is the blurb. It did not fit the story. At all. Based on the blurb, I thought I was about to read something dark, gritty and twisted. This wasn’t that. This was a story about overcoming unfortunate circumstances and bad decisions. It was about discovering self-worth. It was about family and friendship. It was a feel good read with shitty situations tossed in. It was way lighter than the blurb had me anticipating.

This was a great debut novel and I look forward to reading more of Lola Joy's work in the future.

A lot to unpack

The writing in this book is FANTASTIC! The way this author says stuff had me actually highlighting! This is a love story with a HEA but daaaaaaayuuuuuuum there is a lot of angst and emotional baggage to unpack before you make it there! No spoilers but it is all of the twists and turns that has me giving this book such a high rating. While I do feel like the characters are complex it is mainly due to their experiences. I feel like more could have gone into how each had been shaped. This could have easily been a full length 500-800 page book. I even love the secondary characters and would not have minded if they were more developed.
All in all it was a great way to spend my Saturday. Yes, I had errands but who can worry about that with such an engaging book in hand?!!

Nice job

I completely shocked myself by reading contemporary. I generally am not a contemporary reader. I like my story saucy. This book though really touched my heart and I had one of those fantastic outcomes that just makes your heart want to explode, in a good way.

Mercedes and Lochlan are two people that are actually looking for each other but I have no idea that they need each other until they meet. Because it’s a romance novel the fact that they meet so quickly means that they’re going to be drawn apart in someway very quickly and slightly dramatic.

It honestly takes some time for them to find themselves and each other again. But when they do it’s absolutely amazing.

Again completely shocked that I like the story and read a book without saucy nature. But glad that I opened up my reading palette.

Happy reading and wine drinking.

Just WOW

I just have one word to describe this book, DAMN. This book packed such a huge punch that I was glued to it all day. I hurried up and handled my business when I left the house but as soon as I returned I was glued to this book again. I'm not giving anything away regarding the storyline because I wholeheartedly encourage you to read this book. You will experience so many emotions from sadness to shock to laughter. The characters were so well developed that you completely forgot it was a book. I love Mercedes and Lochlan and definitely Liam. Conner has to have a story coming soon because he's the best brother anyone could ask for. And August, what can I say about him besides he's the BEST. Lola Joy definitely did her thing with this book and needs to be making movies to match her stories. I am definitely a fan and will continue to read her stories.

WOOOOOOLAWD!!!!!

Recommended by UniqueWords LLC.

Mercedes has had a tough life!! She did everything she could to stay on the right path. She graduated from college and no one was there to support her. And then she meets Lochlan. And he changed her life. Little did she know one night of passion would alter their lives!! Mercedes doesn’t believe in HAPPILY EVER AFTER. But Lochlan is a man on a mission!!! As with all relationships, there are ups amd downs. But true love...ALWAYS PREVAILS!!!
The road to happiness has bumps and curves..and if you’re lucky, you have a spatula toting bestie name August!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I really enjoyed this book! The storyline was amazing and the plot twist...WOOOOOOLAWDY!!!!! Happy Writing Lola Joy!!! #NewFan!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Wonderful.

I am writing this review after reading this book for the SECOND time. Mercedes is a somber reminder of the horrors some young girls experience growing up & the choices they are forced to make just to survive. Lochlan was a reminder that sometimes "Church" people focus so much on pleasing "religious folk" they forget its the relationship with GOD that is important. The two mixed together....MAGIC. Throw in that adorable baby Liam and you have yourself a heartwarming, thought provoking story. August, Connor & Ashley bring the funny & much needed comic relief. This story has everything. This is my first read by this author. I will be searching Kindle for more & hope the others have this same 🔥🔥🔥.

WOW 🤩 very intriguing story and interesting!

First time reading this author and am very disappointed to have had waited this long to read it, because it was all that and the some.
I can’t say I liked the characters all the way but Mercedes was the perfect heroine. Strong, resilient, a little bit self destructive but independent and a provider; where as Lochlan was the most boring hero ever. Soft, too wannabe with a suppose temper that never manifest....
This story was a little bit too cute, to basic and not enough romancing. Conner is the bomb as well as August. Paul is stupid and Jules is evil while Ashley is a sweetheart with Liam being the star.....
Very good !!!!!!

Should come with a warning about the emotional roller coaster ride

I loved this book for some many, many reasons but my heart broke so bad in a few spots I wasn’t sure it would heal in time for the ending. Both Lochlan and Mercedes are on an epic journey throughout this book and the road is not even close to paved in a few places. You will need tissues, you might want to get a good spatula like August and hope for supportive siblings like Conner and Ashley. I can say this, it’s not billed as Christian fiction but if Christian fiction were more realistic like this story more folks would read it and grow in this own faith journey. All that to say, a hands down kudo on a job excellently done to the author. I will definitely be reading more by her.

LOVED! if I could give it more stars I would!

This is my first time reading this author’s books and I loved it! This story was told in two POV, which I like so your not guessing what the other person is thinking. The story had me on an emotional roller coaster. The female lead character had a tough life growing up, but she was still able to come off likable. The male lead character. I liked him. He had some flaws and I didn’t how he did the female lead character at the beginning, but he later redeemed himself. Overall a great story and I’ve already downloaded the next story of the series, but curious to know what happened to the author since there isn’t anything after book two.

I’m shook, I wasn’t expecting that ending

Mercedes alone and vulnerable, meets Lochlan superstar NBA player, together they learn from each other’s history and navigate towards their future. Twists, turns, and the ugly truth threaten the path to happiness.
Not everyone in your circle has your best interest at heart. Who do you trust when that circle is so small it’s almost non existent.
Can you forgive your family when you discover the malicious acts they did to you, how deep do the scars have to cut before healing can begin?
You are about to find out.

Enjoyed it!!

To start off this was a good book! Was very disappointed in the description of Mercedes I almost stopped reading tbh. I wanted/thought she was gonna be mono-racial black not mixed, sue me.Despite that I liked Mercedes and how she was allowed to be vulnerable yet strong.I liked lead characters and the side ones as well. The chemistry was good, good plot twist I didn’t see coming tbh. Explored some dark topics without it becoming too dark so I appreciate that. Good start for the author and it seem like it was a setup for a series and I can’t wait !

Forgotten story

I did a late review, so I’m back to review and honestly I kind of forgot the story. I remember things here and there after re-downloading and skimming through, but nothing really significant. I know I finished the book, and I don’t think I fast read (just scrolled until something stood out to grab my attention again) so an average read, but clearly forgettable. It’s only been a few past since I completed. I have books that I read last summer and still remember today, months later, just by the title.

Wow,

This book pull all emotions out of me, i cried, screamed, yelled, got angry.
Very well written, well developed characters, storyline is not your usual, and it’s not one of those that are just repetitively long.
This is a must read!
Jules is that evil you don’t wish on anyone, even your worst enemy!
Mercedes is a favored child because not a lot of people survive what she went through.
Grandma tried but she kept trusting Jules even when she knew the evil in her.
Am in love with all the characters, Connor, Ashley, Paul, and August!

Great first Book Debut Mrs. Lola Joy

This book was a wonderful read. I love how she gave us bits and pieces of Mercedes life from her teenage years up to her adult years and then she threw in some twist and turns and a whole bunch of curves that had me wanting to pull my knife out and gut up some folks. This book is full of so many emotions but it has a fantastic happy ending! Thank you Mrs. Lola for the Joy you brought in this book!

Great Escapist Fun

Whew, girl! All the tea in this one. The only thing missing is if we would’ve found out Greg was Mercedes dad, sheesh! Really, Loch at first sight was super yummy and a tall glass of Paul Walker. Mercedes went through so much in her young life! I cared about these characters and couldn’t go to sleep without reading until the end. I chuckled and sighed, belly laughed and cried. The chemistry between those two was caliente; check it out!

Holly shidnuts, is all I can say about that bomb dropper. I did not see that coming!! I think everyone needs a friend like August and I wanted to slap Lochlan for not talking to Mercedes. Mercedes has definitely been put thru a lot and I am glad she was able to look her past in the face and move on and get her HEA. This book was recommended by UniqueWords, LLC and I am glad that I read it because I couldn’t put it down!
