When Kayla Martin tries to revolutionize the sex toy industry she calls on the one person she s grown to count on more than anyone else, her best friend and downstairs neighbor, Dylan Thompson.
When Kayla approaches him about being a test subject for her newest invention, an anal toy, Dylan is intrigued and aroused. That is until he finds out that The Walnut Wand is an anal toy for men.
Kayla s sure that a prostate stimulator will be a hit, all she needs is a willing participant. Far from willing, Dylan flat out refuses, but that s not enough to deter Kayla.
After their monthly poker game, Dylan and Kayla decide to make a risky bet. Kayla wants a test subject and Dylan wants the one thing s he s being craving for years. They ll risk it all on one hand, but anything can happen when jokers are wild.

Lena Matthews spends her days dreaming about handsome heroes and her nights with her own personal hero. Married to her college sweetheart, she is the proud mother of two children, three evil dogs, and a mess of ants that she can't seem to get rid of.
When not writing she can be found reading, watching movies, lifting up the cushions on the couch to look for batteries for the remote control and plotting different ways to bring Buffy back on the air.
Kayla Martin has hit upon an untapped market. The manufacturing of anal sex toys! She's created a prototype and just needs the perfect victim....er, test subject to try it out. So of course she asks her best friend, Dylan Thompson to be her first. Oh, um, yeah. This is an anal sex toy for men. Called The Walnut Wand, it's sure to be a hit, if only she could get someone to test it, for Dylan has for some reason refused to offer up his anal cherry to her. So she and Dylan make a wager over a game of poker. If she wins, he tests it out, if he wins, she goes upstairs to her apartment and calls him--for phone sex. Hehe.
Regardless what anyone says, sex changes a friendship. Sometimes it ruins it and other times it makes it better. This is definitely a case of the latter. Having been friends for several years, they both know the others likes and dislikes and their bedplay definitely starts out with a bang. This fun and easy read was a delight to indulge in. Kayla was an extremely amusing, ditzy character who was easy to love and Dylan was a stuffy and bossy male who I could easily see starring in some 1950s husband and wife comedy, where he is the long suffering, yet adoring husband. Kayla's antics were a little over the top-the girl definitely needs a keeper, but still, she landed quite a keeper so obviously this chick was doing something right. ;)
The plot is simplistic, bordering on practically non existent. Kayla wants to be the inventor of the Walnut Wand and she thinks Dylan's stuffiness is what's preventing him from trying out her toy. Or it could be that the last time she "created" something, he ended up being afraid to use the microwave out of fear of what might happen. Kayla is absentminded and flighty to the extreme and I couldn't make myself get upset at Dylan for refusing to stick some untried, homemade anal sex toy up the most sacrosanct inner cavity of his body.
The sex is not overly graphic. This was more of a fun, sexy romp. There is two phone sex scenes that were rather explicit, but phone sex and internet sex always makes me feel dirty. There's something so naughty about it, and it makes me feel like a perverted voyeur when I read it. There is also one extremely hot, blistering spanking scene where Dylan just lit into her.
This was fun and sexy, but not exactly earth shattering. Read this when you're in the mood for something light and fluffy. It will make you laugh and leave you feeling tingly good.
But enough about my review. I'm sure the only thing you inquiring minds want to know is.........Does Dylan try out The Walnut Wand? Well, read it and find out for yourself! ;)
Lena Matthews is a pretty solid writer for me. She is consistantly good. She is another author for me, that I know I won't be disappointed when I read her books.
Kayla Martin and Dylan Thompson are best friends. Opposites in many ways, they compliment one another with their differences. She is messy and unconventional, he is a neat freak and more conservative. So when Kayla comes up with the idea for a male stimulating sex toy and wants Dylan to be her test subject, he balks at the idea.
Dylan is having difficulty keeping his desire for Kayla at a "friends only" level. So when she is insistant that he try her new sex-toy, their banter becomes a bet over a winner take all game of poker.
This was a fun read because I enjoyed the relationship Dylan and Kayla had with one another. It was obvious that their relationship was ready to advance to the next level, and it was alot of fun reading it do so.
Warning to some readers...if you are offended by strong language or explict sexual relations, this book is not for you.
Joker's Wild-Call Me is the first book out of three in the Joker's Wild series. It is followed by Three Nights and Stripped Bare.
After reading the other reviews on here, I almost feel bad about giving this book one star but I really, really did not like it. If you are looking for a book with any type of substance, this is not it.
I normally like the friends to lovers stories. This one, not so much. Dylan was a jerk. Kayla was an airhead. The other cast of characters added nothing to the story. I understand the main point of the story was more about sex than the actual relationship, but the sex wasn't even good, even though there was a lot of it.
It's doubtful that I will be reading the rest of this series.
This was a shorter story about a free spirited girl who is inventing the "Walnut Wand" for men. (I'll just let you read about that) and the sexy neighbor guy that thinks she is crazy. And rightly so since she has invented some major catastrophy in the past.
They have good chemistry and the sex scenes are actually very good. I only wish he would have tried it in the end. 3 stars
Kayla Martin and Dylan Thompson have been best friends since they first became neighbors. Kayla is a genuis, but flighty, can't sleep, and has a way of bringing a ray of light into Dylan's day. Dylan is the calm before the storm for Kayla, he cooks, and has often been a guinea pig in her experiments, until today.
Kayla has an idea to help stimulate better sexual satisfaction, an walnut wand made for men and their prostates, she wants Dylan to try it. Dylan adamantly refuses, however with all the talk about arousal and mind blowing sex, Dylan wins a bet that leads to friends becoming lovers. What the two find is they cannot get enough of one another and although they are not labeling this new found part of their relationship, Dylan can't think of anyone he would rather spend eternity with.
Funny, sexy, and wickedly funny. Dylan and Kayla are full of surprises, a truly delicious read.
Dylan Thompson and Kayla Martin have been best friends for 5 years. They just shared a few passing words in the hall until Kayla invited Dylan over one night to fix her sink; he assumed that she was hitting on him. After a late night phone call with Dylan, she is inspired to invent an anal vibrator for men, "The Walnut Wand." She approached Dylan to be a test subject; he didn't just say `no', he said `hell no.' She was shocked that he refused, but she wasn't giving up - she would get her way. She tried to exchange favors, but he still flat out refused.
Dylan hosts a monthly poker game in his apartment. Kayla hadn't spoken to Dylan since he told her that she couldn't try out her new invention on him. Dylan was worried he had hurt her feeling, but not enough to change his mind - no way was he being her test subject. Now, she was in his apartment flirting with the other players. After Kayla took all of their money, and everyone had left she challenged Dylan to a winner take all hand. Five card stud, Joker's wild. One hand changes their relationship forever...
I felt that this book started off great, but the story about their friendship seemed to only be filler for the sex scenes. The story is really weak at the end, it rushes to a conclusion. There does seem to be a future story for Chris and Eliza. I was disappointed, the idea behind it seemed good, but the execution was not so good.
I tried, but it makes me so uncomfortable the fact that the female character is so child like. Reminds me of the idea that a woman has to be a virgin outside of the bedroom, and a whore in the bedroom. And what does she do? we know she works from home, but doing what? is she a sex toy designer? how did she make a sex toy in the middle of the night, but then says she bought it and modified it, and wanted to try it, but, it has to have some sanitary regulations, plys im pretty sure there is already one. And the main male character thinking that butt sex made him gay? and all males who enjoy butt play MUST be gay. ? ??
Samhain isn't as bad as Alora's Cave with the explicit words used but both focus on love scenes. The book is jammed packed with love scenes but you get a couple of the actual romantic variety. And unlike many attempts these actually blend seamlessly into the story. This is a great example of what modern romance should be. No angst over words or stupid stuff instead real issues that an air sign/earth sign romance would have. Good solid read with plenty of spice.
I purchased this book for my Kindle anticipating a nice steamy erotica read. At only $2, and a subject matter I've expressed keen interest in of late, I was expecting to get myself all worked up over it, butt [sic:] unfortunately, the delivery was a bit of a letdown and the sex scenes barely came to a boil.
I can't criticize too much however as this was at least a fairly decent read for what it is, a slightly erotic romance novel. (Is that where what the term romantica means?) I'm sure I would've enjoyed it a bit more if a) I liked the (standalone) romance genre to begin with, and b) I didn't go into this thinking I was getting more than what was delivered. Despite all that, the characters were kind of cute and funny and at least somewhat believable, and the writing was decent. I liked Kayla's character even if she was a bit ditzy, and Dylan even if he was a bit pig-headed. Dylan's colleague Chris however, seemed like a real ass. So even had I had liked this a bit more, I probably wouldn't be picking up the next Joker's Wild book since it focuses on Chris and his relationship, if you want to call it that, with his secretary, both of whom are minor characters in this book.
Should you read it? Well, for light romance with a little bit of kink, this would fit the bill nicely. But if you're looking for a hot, steamy erotica read, then move along.
This book hit my amusement meter with Kayla. She's forgetful, brilliant, messy, imaginative and she throws herself in to marathon bouts of sex with her dude. She can't cook, she's eccentric and she has a naughty streak a mile wide. Pair her up with workaholic, tidy, straitlaced Dylan and you get some very funny interactions. Well, he's straitlaced everywhere but in bed. There he goes all in and likes to show his lady just how sexy he thinks she is. Niiiiiice.
I enjoyed that Dylan didn't fall into Kayla's plan to use his butt as a testing ground. He felt very strongly about that particular area of his body and he didn't bend on his beliefs. I really liked that he didn't give in just because he wanted to give Kayla everything she asked for.
Fluffy, steamy and full of nicely creative sex, this was a nice afternoon diversion.
This was a 3 star book for me except for that first phone call which bumped it up to a 3.5 which I then rounded up to a 4. I really liked that phone call. All through the book I was expecting him to try the walnut wand and was dissapointed with the way that played out. The wand was played up so much but we never heard of it's actual use! I was expecting some actual wand lovin. The college test subject guys were mentioned but it was almost in passing. I get that his inability to fully support her in her latest endeavor and not the actual invention itself was the cause of the angst between them and maybe I've been reading a little too much m/m but I was left wanting more. Thank goodness for that first phone call!
Opinions on plot: This book was romantic. Best guy friend turned friend's with benefits turned husband. Cliche, but i love it! Not to mention the steamy scene at the store. Waaayy HOT!
Characters: Haha! I must say i love the female lead. She can come out with.the funniest things, creating a sex toy was sth that i least expected. But don't underestimate her, she is a professor. Honest, not afraid to make demands and determined. This girl has got the brains and attitude. The male lead was somewhat conservative. Which is so cute. He feels naturally protective towards the female lead.
If want to read about mind blowing sex and a female lead who is not afraid or shy to make the first. Please read this book!
This is one of the first books I had on my Kindle. I remember being on a business trip and so glad that this sexy little erotic book was on an eReader back in 2008. It sizzled and at times, I glanced around to make sure no one on the plane could see that I was reading such a hot and sexy book.

I was surprised to have lots of laugh out loud moments in this book. It is what you would expect and has some steamy sex scenes, but the two leads in this book had some great banter. They were just too funny. I will probably read the next book in the series. It was short, easy to read, funny, and has hot sex, I'm sure the next book will contain a lot of those qualities that made me enjoy this book.
Well that was more than I thought it'd be. Kind of kinky, but looking at the summary, I should have guessed.
There was one thing that bothered me, which brought it down to 3 stars. The author used a lot of descriptive words during the adult scenes. More than needed. It kind of took me out of it every time she overly described what they were doing to each other. Sometimes less is more, you know?
Other than that, it was your typical friends become lovers story.
Well...their relationship was a little kinkier that I thought it would be but hey...the premise talks about a butt plug for men. I probably shouldn't have been that surprised. Anyway I have a problem with men all domineering and bossy like Dylan but if it worked for them..who am I to complain? She's the one who has to endure him on a daily basis. Apart from that it was quite a cute little story. Romantic even. Sexy. Full of sex. Some drama but it's minimal. Mature. Simple and enjoyable.

1st of 3 series. Story is about Dylan and Kayla, they have been friends for 5 years and she is kind of a wacky person. Very smart but wacky. She has come up with a sex toy invention called a walnut wand, an anal device for men. She wants Dylan to test it out but he says HELL NO... They paly a jokers wild poker game and end up in bed together. They find that there's more to their feelings then friendship.
This book wasn't horrible but it wasn't very good. It was friends flirt, have sex, fight because girl is to obsessed with her own stuff to see guy loves her, sad no talking mopping, reunite have more sex. That's the whole book. It ends with a chapter that I'm guessing is supposed to lead into the next book.
Hey, I never turn down a free Kindle book, no matter what it is. Who knows... might be fun. :-)
Well, that was the raunchiest book I've read so far. And short. It took me probably 2 1/2 hours to read it, so it was fast. Fast and erotic. I liked it ok for what it was.
Meh...short little read, it was ok, but a little anti-climatic. I thought the "Walnut Wand" concept was played up as being a little too innovative--I mean, don't they already make something like that? It was a litte hokey, but decent reading material.
Pretty good read about best friends who don't realize how much they really mean to one another. I got this as a free read from Amazon, so I am quite pleased with the purchase. :) I would very much like to read about Chris and Eliza. Now that story seems like it's gonna be a very good read.
I down loaded this book as it was free and I must say I enjoyed it, I found it very funny some parts had me giggling to myself, (pretty sure my husband thought I was mad). Well I am notgoing to ruin just to say it was rude, funny and worth a read.
Kinkier than my normal "brand" of smut, but it had a fun twist on the "opposited attract" thing. 'The Professor' was a very likable character, even though the plot is just, well, ridiculous. The walnut wand? Really? LOL
What happens when Kayla Martin calls her best friend and neighbor Dylan to help her by testing the current project she's trying to design. Once he finds out what it is he refuses. But when he finds out she is interviewing guys to help her he is furious. A new to me author
Pretty cute. It wasn't as overtly erotica as the premise suggested. It had the right amount of steamy and sex, a little short on story and character developed but that can be expected from the length of the book.
Good Story. Kayla invents a sex toy called the "The Walnut Wand". She tries to get her best friend and downstair neighbor to try it out. He refuses, until they have their monthly poker game.
