In this new, greatly expanded edition of her bestselling Crofts and Crofting, Katherine Stewart updates the crofting story for the 21st century. Crofting, a particularly Scottish way of managing the land, has evolved into a rich tradition, marked by community spirit, personal warmth, and toughness in the face of adversity. This book is a concise guide to the history, working methods, and future of this unique way of life.
Katharine Stewart was an author, crofter, teacher and postmistress. She is most well known for her book A Croft in the Hills. First published in 1960, it describes the life of a family in a remote croft in the 1950s. The book has been republished and reprinted seven times. She also wrote A Garden in the Hills, A School in the Hills and The Post in the Hills.
This is, quite simply, the best, most comprehensive and coherent condensed account of the history and development of crofting in the Highlands and Islands that I have read. Combining a wide-ranging introduction to Gaelic culture in all its guises with a thorough account of crofting agriculture, fishing and the associated elements that combine to create the crofting communities it is a wonderful, beautifully crafted book. A real gem!
