The Once and Future Queen #3

Legend of the Lakes

Rate this book
I thought to die that night in the solitude where they would never find me…

Cassandra stands silent upon a ravaged battlefield, watching as the druids prepare the dead for the pyres, embers drifting up into the still winter darkness. She can barely breathe through the agony of her grief, but she cannot waste another second on tears.

Because Londinium, the Caesar, the empire… all of it is still out there. The empire whose code she had followed, whose prince she had promised to marry, whose schemes she had been swept up in since birth.

They tried to use her magic against her. To silence her.

So she will use her magic against them. To silence them. Forever.

The third and final chapter of The Once and Future Queen trilogy, this epic scifi fantasy adventure set in a dystopian world where the Romans still rule will enchant fans of Sarah J Maas and Cassandra Clare.

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Legend of the Lakes is the third and final installment of The Once and Future Queen. Now it was a good book but I'll admit that I was bored for most of it. Don't get me wrong, it had some interesting parts and betrayals throughout it but nothing really happened that caught my attention until the book was basically over. I just think that I wanted more. Especially when it came to revenge.

Now in the beginning, I just felt bad for Cassandra. She kind of seems to be in a constant zombie mode. She was hurting and just not there for the people who surrounded her. It also broke my heart that she was kept away from her own daughter.. but then again - she wasn't in the right mind frame either.

Other than that, I feel like I got all my questions answered from this series but I just kept hoping for something else to happen. I was suspicious of so many people and I kept thinking we weren't seeing the truth at times as well. It definitely made my brain hurt since most of this was happening right on top of one another.

In the end, it was a cute conclusion that definitely put a smile on my face. I just wanted more action and revenge.

Thank you to the HarperCollins UK One More Chapter team for providing this digital ARC through NetGalley for me to review honestly!

Real rating: 3.75 of 5 stars

After the major cliffhanger that the previous book, "Curse of the Celts", left off at, I had been looking forward to reading "Legend of the Lakes" as soon as I could. It starts off a bit slow with the after-effects of the aforementioned cliffhanger, and Cass, in particular, finds herself so downtrodden by grief that she feels so disconnected from everyone and everything else. This, along with the toll that tending the ley lines has on her, yields a copious amount of angst between her and Gideon--angst that I found vigorously carried me through the book. I found myself nearly close to tears at points during Cass and Gideon’s interactions with each other where Feile was concerned. As a reader, we are on this journey with Cass as she navigates her newly found duty of tending the ley lines and as she eventually finds out how this affects her, and therefore we start to understand it, too. Eventually, the action in the book picks up and we are given plots involving an impending war with an abundance of plot twists, reveals, and betrayals that had me unable to put the book down until I finished. This world that Clara O’Connor has built up through these three novels is truly amazing and provides all it promises as the key characters deal with magic, technology, their relationships with each other, and their politically powerful enemies.

3.5/5 STARS
I was gifted an eARC by the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The final installment of The Once and Future Queen was a great wrap up to the series. The previous book ended on a cliffhanger, so I was very excited to get my hands on this book. Cass is dealing with the loss of someone she loved deeply, while also trying to come to terms with her role in Mercia.

Cass is stricken with so much grief and often finds herself unable to do anything in the first part of the book. Those around her constantly have to remind her to take care of herself— if not for her, for the baby she’s carrying. Upon the birth of her daughter, Féile, Cass has a brief period of intense joy and love. Not long after her daughters birth, Cass thrusts herself into healing the ley lines. Throughout the book, she struggles with her emotions—often getting too caught up in healing the lines that she forgets about her loved ones. Those around her eventually realize there is something further than grief affecting Cass.

About half way through the book, things start to speed up. There is an impending war with Londinium that is further flamed by something totally unexpected. Through multiple betrayals, challenges, and ultimatums, Cass must make a difficult decision— save one person she loves or everyone?

The beginning felt so slow to me and the first 30% of the book definitely could’ve been shorter in my opinion. I did enjoy the tension between her and Gideon throughout the book, though. The constant back and forth that kept us wondering what would happen with them definitely kept me intrigued. I was incredibly irked by their inability to properly communicate though. There were also a few instances that made me want to throttle each of them… lol

Another thing that made it difficult to enjoy fully was what felt like a lot of info dumping about the history of the Lady of the Lake. I found myself skimming the book in these parts, pushing myself to keep reading. While it was definitely interesting to hear more about the history and the bond between the Lady and the Griffin, it felt like too much at times. There were definitely better ways to engage the reader with this information.

The last 20% of the book was definitely worth the read. All questions are answered and the ending was very satisfying for me. The huge twists kept me on edge, which is what I’m looking for in a fantasy series.

Also I still don’t like you Marcus. You suck.

Overall rating of the trilogy- 3.25/5

Real Rating: 2.75/5

Wow! I can't believe it's over! Legend of the Lakes by Clara O'Connor dives deeper into the emotional turmoil that the main character Cassandra faces as she finds herself drained by a multitude of factors, all while trying to navigate her new role as a mother. As she struggles with debilitating grief, she makes questionable choices in terms of familial roles and disregarded priorities.

Something I struggled with throughout this series is Cassandra’s forced dependence on men. She is a strong character on her own, but certain circumstances in her world force her to depend on them for her own survival. The storyline also felt very repetitive in all three books- her being tied to a man, losing all emotions if not near said man, and seemingly being in a relationship that, more often than not, is one-sided. I struggled to connect with her throughout her journey; maybe I was not supposed to, but her inability to admit her true feelings and wrongdoings to those around her was infuriating at times.

Gideon and Cassandra’s relationship also fell a bit flat. I found it difficult to like them together due to their incredibly toxic nature. At one point, Gideon initiates a sexual encounter, and the morning after, he insinuates that Cassandra used him. When Cassandra awakens after months of being on the brink of death, no one gives her time to adjust. They immediately begin to point out her flaws and seem infuriated that she was not a good mother even though they know it had to do with her not being close to the Griffin.

Overall, the book didn’t go in the direction I wished it had, I was hoping for more epic battles and for some more of Cassandra’s past to be revealed, but the ending was wholly satisfying. I especially love the bond between Cassandra and her daughter and justice finally being served.

Young adult fantasy at its best! Filled with grit, seemingly insurmountable odds, powerfully drawn characters and pulled together into a riveting trilogy, all that was needed was a perfect ending, one that kept readers supposing what would happen next…

Clara O’Connor delivers LEGEND OF THE LAKES and hits a powerful homerun right out of the library!

In a brilliantly imagined alternate history, this addition to the trilogy continues the emotional roller coaster while tying up loose ends, building on the past and forcing each character to come to terms with each event. Flawed, yet determined, these characters, especially Cassandra show their willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for the good of their people and the magic the world possesses.

This trilogy knows no age limit, rich with detail and atmosphere, readers become a part of the story, they walk with characters, and feel what they feel. A wonderfully imagined tale coming to life as each page magically disappears.

I received a complimentary ARC edition from One More Chapter! This is my honest and voluntary review.

After the ending of the last book, I needed to know how the series would end. So much betrayal and sadness that it was difficult to see how anything would work out. The story picks up right where the other left off, with Cass mourning her loss. I can't imagine how that would feel and understood her falling into a depression, but it lasted half the book. There were other elements at play, but since I didn't like Cass that much to begin with, it just cemented my disdain of her.

Cass spends much of the story in an emotionless fog, she doesn't care for her daughter and is constantly awful to Gideon. Even at the end, Cass says hurtful things and didn't show the growth I was hoping for. Gideon is the real hero of the story, raising Feile and being there for Cass always. I adore him and he deserves all the happiness.

The pacing is uneven, with the first half being incredibly slow and picking up in the last quarter. I wish we'd had more action to keep the plot moving forward and hold on to my interest. At least the series wrapped up and left no loose ends to worry about.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. Thank you to Harper Collins and NetGalley for the copy.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins One More Chapter for providing me with an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Concluding the Once and Future Queen trilogy, comes Legend of the Lakes, a book I was eagerly awaiting after the great cliff-hanger that ended book two.

However, I was sadly disappointed to see pretty much all of my expectations let down, in a book that was, for the most part, just plain boring: events and days repeated themselves unchanging over and over with the occasional time jump to add at least a semblance of movement and a bit of spice in the main romantic relationship. One that, once again, sorely disappointed my expectation of a nice slow-burn hate-to-love, turning out to be one of those they-hate-each-other’s-guts-until-they-sleep-together, followed by the equally annoying they-wake-up-in-love-without-any-emotional-development-whatsoever.

In terms of worldbuilding, at least the question of the incompatibility between technology and magic was answered, but still it did sometimes feel a tad too convenient, while other elements of the history and lore were sometimes included in such a way, they almost looked like they were thrown in with the sole purpose of name dropping.

The last part was definitely the most exciting one, both in terms of story and characters, as betrayals followed secret plots and more truths were revealed… even though the final showdown was still not the best it could have been and was entirely predictable in my opinion.

Overall, I thought the series had a lot of potential and if I was happy to look over a few issues with the first book for the sake of its originality, I was sadly increasingly disappointed with the sequels, and I think maybe this could have worked better as a duology instead, and with a little more work on the intricacies of the world and relationships.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc of this book! My opinions are my own.

The Legend of the Lakes is the last installment in this trilogy. What a ride it has been! After the big plot twist at the end of book 2, I couldn't wait to find out how the story would continue and how the main character Cassandra would deal with what had happened to her!

This book starts off rather slow and it took me some time to connect to the main characters again. We learn more about the ley lines, why they matter so much and how they can be healed. This is necessary information to the story, but it drags on a bit. In the second half of the book the pace picks up and the action starts. It was nice to find out the ending, with a few more betrayals, hidden truths and plot twists to keep us readers entertained.

I enjoyed this trilogy as a whole, but can't help feeling like this isn't the book in the series. The pacing was a bit off and the relationships between the characters developed in ways that didn't always feel natural to me. Which was a pity, because I thought the story in itself was original and worth reading. But I did find myself skipping pages at times.

I can definitely imagine others loving this book more than I did! So if you love a mix of Roman and Celtic culture, you could definitely pick up this trilogy!

I loved the idea of the book and the fantasy world that the author had created. But the book could be shorter, there were parts that were too descriptive and I didn't feel that they were necessary. So this is a 3.5 star book for me.

Of course, there was a love story in this book. Circumstances forced Cassandra and Gideon together and it was fun to watch their love grow. I loved how Gideon could be strong as a warrior and tender and caring as a father.

I felt that the author tried to promote healing more than revenge here so there wasn't much action or fighting scenes.

This ending was just a typical wrap up of a series. I didn't feel like there was a lot of important moments in this one. I really didn't like how Cat was so dependent on a needing a man to bring her back every time she fell too far... I wish we had more view of the Griffin and that transformation because it seemed really interesting but we only glimpsed it a few times.

It's fell really flat and I found myself skimming towards the end because I could tell exactly what was going to happen. Not a lot of surprises or twists in this one.

What a brilliant conclusion to a series that has captured my heart this year.
After having my heart literally ripped out and stomped on at the conclusion of Curse of the Celts I wasn’t sure where we were going to go with Legend but we went somewhere wonderful and I just love this world.
The author has built an incredible world and magic system and I enjoyed my time in it.
My only bug bear with Legend is there is an awful lot of history jammed in I don’t feel like we need to know the entire line of the Lady, when the pertinent parts would suffice but I understand why she added it.
Ooh and this is a lot more NA than the first book big stars for the spicy-ness!
Oh and I knew x was a wrongun!

What an emotional roller coaster this trilogy was!!!!

I couldn’t put words together when I finished it and now days later, I still have a hard time coming up with what to say!

The continuity of the books has been pretty good, picks up right where the other ended and I like that. With that said, we (yes, I’m including myself with the characters ) are still trying to cope. Cassandra has a harder time than most and gets pretty ugly to those around her. As I said from the previous book, I don’t like how Cass 2.0 is and was hoping for an upgrade. Her actions and words don’t match her thoughts tans that’s so frustrating.

Gideon!!!!!! 💜💜I need a man like that in my life! Just wow! I have to say he’s my favorite character. Just like Cass, Gideon is also having a hard time coping and adjusting BUT the changes he makes are for the better. He’s too damn good for his partner...

The last book didn’t disappoint. It covered a lot. We got answers, secrets were revealed, the main characters go through quite a journey individually and together which in the end, made it all worth it. Marcus is still on my s*** list. For someone so damn smart he sure let’s his dad handle him. And while at the end some of his actions are good, they’re not good enough to forgive everything else. The bad guys have their power taken away and Cass and co step in and try to forge a better leadership.

I think I’m going to reread the series now that all 3 books are out. The story is just that good!

Legend of the Lakes is the dramatic conclusion to the Once and Future Queen series. As a word of caution, this series is meant to be read in order as each novel takes place where the other leaves off, so many events from the previous will either be spoiled or not make as much sense if you skip one or two. I am beyond excited to review this novel as it exceeded every expectation and kept me on the edge of my seat until the end. I admit that I was not the greatest fan of Secrets of the Starcrossed (#1) as it just did not grab me enough, but Curse of the Celts (#2) drew me in and I never wanted to let go. As a whole, this series is amazing and I have a new appreciation for book one as some events came full circle and now I need to go and read them back to back.

This thrilling conclusion picks up after the extreme cliffhanger that happened at the end of book two. Cass/Cat now has to find out what to do next as she has her mission/duty, but also a lot of emotions to work through. This novel handles this situation extremely well as the reader not only experiences Cat’s own situation but sees how everyone around her also has to move on. I am thrilled that there is a character like Gideon in this novel as I loved every single thing about him since he first showed up on the page. I was rooting for him since book two and loved that his amazing character shined through during this novel. I personally was never a huge fan of Devyn, as I just never thought he was a super amazing person. This is not based on how the author wrote him, as she did a great job, but just something about him I never clicked with. Immediately, I connected with Gideon (Rion, too) where I found myself loving when they were featured in book two and this feeling continued in book three. Gideon, especially, was one of the best things about this novel, among many other great qualities.

In this novel, the reader learns a lot about the ley lines that are the magical source for the world. Without them, the world would fall. It is up to those with magical abilities to maintain the lines, but, unfortunately, some might be beyond repair. The divide between magic and technology comes into play again after addressing a little in book one. A lot of the story comes full circle as there was a ton of foreshadowing from the very beginning and perfectly illustrated how well-thought-out this series was when the author put it together. When I reached into my memories from the first two novels, I could predict a lot of the events that occurred in this novel. I loved that nothing was obvious and instead the reader had to focus on the tiny clues to try and piece it together or go in blind to be surprised. Even if you could piece together some of the stories, there were a few moments that absolutely surprised me. Essentially, this novel is a huge roller coaster of emotion as you laugh, cry, get angry, become content, etc. It is impossible to write more detailed explanations or even a fraction of one, as it would spoil the plot and I am attempting to keep most of this review as spoiler-free as I can.

Overall, this was an excellent conclusion. The side characters were amazing as even the “villains” were well-written and you loved to hate them. Cass was a little hit or miss, which she was the entire time for me, as she is not a great communicator. She has a lot of inner thoughts, but her actions rarely reflect these thoughts, so she becomes a walking contradiction. She does grow a lot throughout the trilogy, but it is hard to say if any of it is lasting growth beyond the last page. She is the Lady of the Lake and she fit the role well. It was captivating to read about her learning about who she is and where she came from without being given the information directly. Even the Griffin was a role that never had a direct answer and had its secrets slowly revealed. I love that the series wrapped itself up well with conclusions for the plot and character that did not feel as if it was forced or rushed. All the secrets were revealed in due time and were fantastically written from start to finish. A series that I will gladly recommend and re-read without hesitation!

**I want to give a special thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, for a review copy of this captivating and enjoyable novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**

*Thank you to NetGalley, HarperCollins UK and One More Chapter for providing me with an ARC of Legend of the Lakes.*

When I saw this ARC land in my inbox, I had to read it straight away after the ending of Curse of Celts! I enjoyed the first book but the second book really hooked me and this book was no different. Legend of the Lakes picks up right where the sequel ended. This review will contain spoilers for the first two books so if you’re planning on reading them, do not read ahead!

‘You think I haven’t thought of this every day, every night for the last three years.’

This book really had me in my feels, after that shock ending and Devyn being killed, Gideon marrying Cassandra and becoming the Griffin to save her life. Wow! What an emotional rollercoaster! There was a lot of time passing in this novel, which definitely made sense for the story the author is telling. At the beginning Cassandra, understandably, is grieving and she seems to be handling it okay, but when her child is born, she starts drifting away into her magic. It was really interesting to explore the magic system in more detail in this book as Cassandra starts training properly on how to “clean” the ley lines. I really liked that aspect of the story and how the use of her magic had a physical and mental toll on her and how this was worked into the overall plot.

‘I was yours the moment you stepped into that glade fit to kill me.’

Throughout these books, I was never certain about how I felt for Devyn, he always put his duty before Cassandra and I felt like she was never appreciated enough. In the sequel, we were introduced to Gideon and he grew on me throughout. It was no different in this book, I loved his character. He was very caring, and looked after Cassandra’s daughter, Féile when she became affected by her magic. The relationship he had with Féile was lovely. I also really enjoyed watching Gideon and Cassandra’s relationship blossom over the course of this book. And yes, I do like him more than Devyn. Their relationship involved a lot more than lust and love, and was about Cassandra accepting herself and understanding how she felt and what she wanted. This couple weren’t quite enemies to lovers but there was a definite dislike or resentment, some form of tension between the characters. I loved reading this book for this development! Cassandra did annoy me at times, but I think it was all part of her journey. The passage of time allowed for this relationship to develop as it wouldn’t have felt right if Cassandra moved on from Devyn quickly. Although, Devyn did play a role in this book, with Cassandra turning her grief into anger towards Gideon, accusing him of not being Devyn. This broke my heart for the both of them. As much as this book was about Cassandra and Gideon’s relationship and the overall plot, it was also in a way about overcoming and dealing with grief.

‘Know that if I had a choice, you would be my first choice. Always.’

It’s really difficult to say much about this plot without spoiling the story! But the author has continued to craft a beautiful story in this dystopian world. I felt many emotions in this book, including throwing my kindle to the other side of the sofa after reading something I didn’t want to believe was true, crying, realising I was wrong, and then crying some more. This book felt like a great ending to this story and I’m kind of sad to not read more about these characters and life after the events in this book.

“I had vowed to myself to grow strong in order to take on the Empire, to hone what abilities I had so that they could never hurt me or mine again.” —Clara O’Connor

I was so excited to have this ARC in my inbox. Curse of the Celts left off on a major cliffhanger that had me on the edge of my seat ready to see what would happen next. Legend of the Lakes picks up where Curse of the Celts left off. Devyn has been killed and Cassandra is married to Gideon, who has become the Griffin in order to protect her. She is grieving and in the midst of her grief, she is being asked to take up the mantle of the Lady of the Lake and develop her power.

This was not my favorite book in the series, but I did like the way it wrapped up the story. We learn more about the magic system and what it will take to make things right. Legend of the Lakes moves at a quicker pace than the other books in the series and contains quite a few revelations that kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed learning more about Gideon’s backstory and seeing Cassandra bond more with her brother Rion.

Cass goes through a lot in this book. She starts the book completely at odds with Gideon and continually pushes him away as she is still grieving the death of Devyn. After she gives birth to her daughter, she is pulled away to utilize her magic in order to clean the ley lines. This drains her and keeps her from her daughter for extended amounts of time as she is traveling and is constantly exhausted after using her magic. By the end of the second book, I was liking Cassandra more and more, but this book made it a little harder for me. I understand that she was going through a lot, but I just felt like her actions did not connect with the thoughts she has.

The tension between her and Gideon is palpable throughout the whole book. While Cassandra is working on repairing the ley lines, Gideon has been taking care of her daughter. This has kept them separated and further drives a wedge between them. Over the course of the book, they had so many moments of miscommunication and it was incredibly frustrating since I felt like if they were honest with each other, they would have been able to avoid a lot of hurt.

Overall, I did enjoy reading this book. There were quite a few twists and turns that I was not expecting and others that I was. Regardless, they kept me on the edge of my seat and I thought the book wrapped up the series really well! I would definitely recommend this series!

Oh, dear readers, prepare yourselves for an emotional rollercoaster because "Legend of the Lakes" by Clara O’Connor is an absolute masterpiece that will leave you utterly breathless. As the final installment in The Once and Future Queen series, this book delivers an unforgettable conclusion that will stay with you long after you've turned the last page.

From the very first chapter, I was completely captivated by Cassandra's journey as she navigates through grief, loss, and newfound responsibilities. O’Connor's poignant portrayal of Cass's raw emotions and inner turmoil had me reaching for the tissues from start to finish. Seriously, have a box of tissues at the ready because this book will tug at your heartstrings like never before.

But amidst the tears, there is also beauty to be found in the bonds of friendship and love that Cass shares with her companions. The growth and development of each character throughout the trilogy are nothing short of remarkable, and I found myself cheering for Cass, Devyn, and Gideon every step of the way. And let's not forget about the side characters who add depth and complexity to the story, leaving you torn between love and hate for each one.

"Legend of the Lakes" is a masterclass in world-building, seamlessly blending elements of fantasy, magic, and dystopia to create a rich and immersive universe that will leave you spellbound. O’Connor's meticulous attention to detail and intricate plotting make for a gripping and suspenseful read that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

And speaking of endings, let me just say that the conclusion of this trilogy is nothing short of perfection. Every loose end is tied up, every question answered, and every twist and turn expertly executed. O’Connor's storytelling prowess shines brightly in this final installment, leaving me in awe of her talent and eagerly anticipating her future works.

"Legend of the Lakes" is a shining gem in the world of fantasy literature, deserving of a place alongside the greats like Throne of Glass and The Cruel Prince. If you're a fan of Sarah J. Maas or Cassandra Clare, this trilogy is an absolute must-read. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

3.5⭐️

I’m a little speechless.

That’s how it ends?

I think this book had a lot of great qualities but I’ll expand on the things that I didn’t like first.
1. Cass’ inability to talk about emotions or even show emotions. It was fucking frustrating to read that even in this book (as it started in the second) her fighting with Gideon about their relationship. It felt wholly immature and very unnecessary. It became a focal point of the book at one point I was like “fuck both of you. Neither of you deserves each other. Why are we doing this yet again”. Frustrating.

2. The ending. That’s how this ends? I felt as if there was no conclusion. We ended shortly after the climax. How is there no more to write about or even give an epilogue a year or so? It’s like season 8 of GoT. We built up for two books this crazy ending only to have it be cut off and have no resolution. Basically Bran becomes king. Like. I’m okay with Marina being a ruler but we don’t get ANY resolution after the fall out. If I’m being honest- it feels like the last 10% was a cop out of a book. As if there was no planned ending so we just got the spaghetti thrown at the wall. I’m a bit miffed.

Alright. Things I liked.
The fact that Devon stayed dead. I was really worried that he would somehow come back in this book but I’m very glad he didn’t. It made the series that much stronger. It also made his death actually useful vs it just being a way to make drama.
The real dynamics of family. I really liked seeing how Cass had to grow with Gideon and Fayla (don’t know how it’s actually spelled since I had the audiobook). It brought up a lot of issues with family, abandonment, and trust that I think were pivotal to the plot.
The use of myths intertwined with tech. I think that is a fabulous concept and I do think it was executed really well.

As much as I hated the ending (which I would have given 2 stars) I do think this was a good book. I don’t like it how it left the end of the series. I would have recommended this series to anyone but now I hesitate because of the ending of this book. It just leaves a sour taste in my mouth when the last two books were so incredibly good.

I am confusion.

THERE ARE SPOILERS FOR THE PREVIOUS BOOKS- READ AT YOUR OWN RISK

This was the most epic conclusion to the series! And I loved it so much! This book has shown so much... But this one gave so much hope to move forward with life. I was already too hooked with the plot that I needed to continue the series, even after the events of the previous book of the series.

I hadn't known that I would come so far as to ship Gideon and Cat and to basically live for their interactions throughout the book. This was one of the things in this book that surprised me as all my reactions while reading it went against all that I believed in. The chemistry between the two was unbelievably good. I never expect such chemistry after the MC's love of her life has died. But Clara has pulled that effortlessly and I salute her for it. It wasn't that the chemistry between Devyn and Cass was lacking- oh their interactions were hot- but that Cass also had a lot of chemistry and angst with Gideon too (form book 2 as I had noticed-shame on me).

This book was more fast-paced than the first two in the series, there was less info-dumping but a bit nonetheless,(I still can't understand the story of all the Lady of Lake throughout the ages-there were just so many names and it confused me a lot). There were so many revelations throughout the book and the author just makes you gripping the edge of your seat in anticipation of what happens next.

There was this one thought going around in my mind while reading it that I would like to point out, was that the situation of Cass/ Cat resonates a lot with Meredith Grey. So, every time something happened I was like-just like Meredith and I would cry.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for providing me with the review copy!

This is the third instalment in this series and I was so excited to read it.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the eARC.

I really liked the concept for this world and each book in this series was really nicely divided; each had a necessary piece of the story and was a continuation without much repetition or filler. In this final book, we’ve learned who Cassandra is, she’s grown and matured and she’s on the precipice of something really big.

The pacing of this novel was perfect for me. We get a nice amount of time with Cassandra in the Wilds and then we get the big showdown. There’s nice development of her relationship with Gideon. I’m super biased towards Gideon. I liked him more than Devyn even in the second book, so I was really happy to see them pushed together. That being said, some of the events in this book were wholly unbelievable and detracted from the story telling. I wasn’t impressed with their final heart-to-heart. It’s obvious they start to fall for each other; there was no need to turn it into instalove.

Also, Cassandra is a bit confusing. On the one hand, she can sort out Calchas’ plan, but only sometimes. Other times she’s willfully blind about super obvious things. It was forgivable when she didn’t want to believe Gideon loved her, but it wasn’t when she thought she was going to die.

The final twist was very confusing and I’m not sure how it was pulled off, but I don’t particularly care. This was so satisfying. It wasn’t not obvious, but it also wasn’t cliched. It was such a nice way to end a series. Every important loose end was tied off and I wasn’t left with a weird cliff-hanger or too much information. I didn’t necessarily agree with every tie off (like Oban?), but it wasn’t important. Everyone got just about what they deserved and life was better off in a way that aligned with the rest of the story.

I liked it, but didn’t adore it. It was, as I said, satisfying. A good story with interesting characters set in a unique world.

Have you ever finished a book and been gripped by overwhelming sadness? This is exactly how I felt having reached the end of this trilogy. I didn't want the story to end. I didn't want to leave this world and all the characters behind. I wasn't ready.

Legend of the Lakes is the final book in The Once and Future Queen trilogy and I was both excited and apprehensive going into it. I looked forward to continuing Cass's story, but I wasn't sure how it was going to pan out after the ending of book two and the loss of Devyn. How could it?

The book begins with the pyres being built to burn the dead and Cass suffering the loss of Devyn. It is so well done, my heart broke for her all over again. I wasn't willing to let Gideon in, to feel anything for him bar distrust and loathing, but he won me over in the end. His flawed character, the details of his backstory and the pain he held within. It dripped out slowly through the course of the book and his actions won me over.

This book, this final part of the story, was filled with twists and turns, betrayals I never imagined, and a perfect ending that I honestly didn't think could happen.

I imagined all sorts going into this story. Cass destroying all the Romans. Devyn coming back to life. Things that my heart ached for after reading book two, but the author brought so much more and I absolutely loved the story. The writing is superb, the world building amazing, the use of magic spectacular, and the character growth and plot are perfect. My only negative is that the trilogy has ended and I wasn't ready for that. I do look forward to adding all three books to my bookshelves so I can read them all again.

Clara O'Connor is a wonderful storyteller and I can't wait to read more from her. I'd give this trilogy 100 stars if I could.

Reviewing without spoiling is quite hard but I will try by telling you what I felt, and realized about this unusual finale.

War is brewing while Cassandra mourns, and in the face of adversity and motherhood, slowly starts to become stronger than she ever believed. The author has gifted us with a far from perfect hero, one still searching for herself, but a hero trying her best. Trying to be a proper Lady of the Lake.

Words are placed together in fascinating ways, for O'Connor's signature descriptions, that evoke the appropriate emotion at the appropriate time. The narrative is laced with foreboding and melancholy, but also hope. The protagonist's musings are heart-wrenching but also inspirational.

The 1st part of the book was completely different from what I was expecting. The protagonist's emotional journey is well written, especially the situation with Gideon, pained and comical at the same time. The truth is I expected the war or revenge on the Empire to begin much sooner. Her emotional journey is warranted and explained, but I still wish it hadn't taken up so many pages. Also sometimes her thoughts get repetitive and she ponders on things that have just been mentioned.

Part 2 and 3 are much better with parts of them being brilliant. Presenting a quicker pace, color by action and revelations, with a crazy plan the characters are bringing to fruition. Things really get crazy then. Also Calchas is such a wonderfully despicable villain.

The corruption of the ley lines is an allegory for humanity's corruption of Earth. A prominent theme here is being true to yourself and what you want. Also duty plays a major role and doing what is right.

An emotionally charged finale, with deep character development, to such an imaginative series.

My, my goodness.......it's just so, so good.....but why is it over??? Honestly, that's all I could think when I finished, why can't it just go on!!! I am in love with these people, this story and this world and I just didn't want it to end and as each book in the series just was better and better and this conclusion just brings it all home beautifully. After the tragic events at the end of The Curse of the Celts, we pick up immediately with Catriona, Gideon and Rion heading back to Carlisle for the birth of her child and her training to take up the mantle of the Lady of the Lake. Catriona's entire journey through this book, all of the emotional trauma, the effects of using her magic, her connection to the Griffin are such a roller coaster of feelings, hurt, betrayal, love, loss, duty and you feel every bit of it as she works to save herself and the people of the North. But I wasn't prepared for Gideon to be the heart and soul of this book, and his journey from snarky, aloof warrior to devoted father, lover and husband was heart-warming, heart-breaking and he has become one of my favorite characters. The push, pull, give, take of his relationship with Cat and all the revelations of his past and how they affect all he does are wonderfully written and I love their story. Such great twists, betrayals and Calchas has become one of my most hated villains, the glee and joy as he manipulates all around him is just marvelously done. I cannot recommend this series enough, the world is beautifully realized, the combination of Roman and Druid worlds, plus characters you truly care for make this an absolute must read!!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Legend of the Lakes by Clara O’Connor. I’ve voluntarily read and reviewed this copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Legend of the Lakes is the final book in O’Connors The Once and Future Queen series. After that cliffhanger of an ending in the previous book, Curse of the Celts, I couldn’t wait to read Legend of the Lakes.

Legend of the Lakes picks up immediately after the events of Curse of the Celts. We find Cassandra in this book on a journey of dealing with her grief and the responsibility of being the Lady of the Lake. We also find ourselves in the final battle against Londinium.

The first half of the book was very slow but also understandable since we follow Cassandra dealing with her grief and it’s not easy for her. After the first half the pace picks up and there’s more action, suspense and interesting banter between various characters. I loved the interactions between Cassandra and Gideon, even though I could basically yell at them every single thing they had an interaction. Their development and growth as characters and their journey together was written amazingly by Clare O’Connor.

The world-building in this series is so interesting and captivating. In this book we learn more about life at court, the history and myths of the Lady of the Lake and the various noble families. I can’t applaud O’Connor enough for having woven such an complex world and history.

The last few chapters left me on the edge of my seat and the ending was very satisfying. A great conclusion to an amazing series.

Check out my review on my blog: http://thereadingdevil.blogspot.com/2...

Or read below!

*Please DO NOT read this if you haven't read the first two books - SPOILER ALERT*

OMG. I will forever be in love with this series, despite the emotional turmoil Clara O'Connor has put me through. I mean seriously... she tears my heart out, starts to put the pieces back together again, then ambushes me and rips my heart out again (I was ready to throw my Kindle across the wall let me tell you) and then puts the pieces back together again. Like what?! CLARA... MY HEART.... CAN'T!! But it did. And now I feel whole again.

So after the end of the second book, I was upset to put it lightly. By upset I mean my world felt empty and devoid of light and happiness. I mean... who in their right mind creates a character like Devyn... and then KILLS HIM?!?!?! WHAT?! I was 100% convinced that this author was not going to be able to redeem herself, despite a tweet telling me that it was going to be ok lol! 😂 I did not believe her AT ALL but I held out hope.

Needless to say, she redeemed herself. I was very grudgingly brought over to Team Gideon, but was soon a very enthusiastic fan. Gideon was an excellent character. Loyal, loving, dark, straightforward... everything I love in a male lead. I didn't think I would ever like Cassandra with someone other than Devyn but alas... I was proven wrong. Gideon is literally perfect. I can't even.

Cassandra herself was excellent in this final book. Far from the naïve, slightly self-absorbed person she was in the first book, Cassandra is now self-assured, eager to help her people, and more in tune with her magic. She has to go through quite a bit in this book, but faces everything with heart and determination.

It speaks to the skill of the author that I was able to fall so thoroughly in love with two different love interests. I cannot wait to read anything and everything that Clara O'Connor comes out with. Perhaps a spinoff featuring Féile? 😉👀 Lol whatever it is, this author has me as a fan for life. Now I have to buy actual physical copies of this trilogy because... how beautiful are these covers right?!

OH MY HEART AND SOUL! This is the final book in The Once and Future Queen series by Clara O’Connor and that ending does not disappoint! I am still reeling from this book and its been a week since I read it! Seriously it is one of those books where you cannot pick up a new one because it leaves you breathless. I think I cried throughout the whole thing! I know I didn’t stop crying until 1/4 through the first time i started crying. I definitely recommend to have a box of tissue with you when you are reading this and don’t be reading this in public!

The third book follows Cass as she navigates through grief, her numerous newfound responsibilities and her unexpected relationships. Clara O’Connor writes this so well and experiences Cass’ raw grief and disconnection from reality as Cass notices how everyone around her is moving on as the years go by. She grows so much throughout the trilogy and throughout this novel alone. I love, love, love Gideon (seriously he reminds me of my husband! Tall, strong and brooding haha.). I was really hoping to see a lot more of him after meeting him in Curse of the Celts and he did not disappoint. I hoped that things would work out for all the characters. Although, I loved Devyn and miss his sense of duty; I am glad that there was a more healthy relationship shown in this novel, despite its problems and their fighting. The side characters are also so well-written and you loved to hate them. Marcus, well the jury is still out on him…

Legend of the Lakes builds on the world building from Secrets of the Starcrossed and Curse of the Celts. So much information is given as Cass learns & explores her magic, and what her role in the Celtic society means to her and those surrounding her. Her understanding of the ley lines and the impact technology has on them is explored. Many questions were answers about the magic, the roles and the kingdoms. Legend of the Lakes completes the series and gives many things a full circle ending. Clara O’Connor did an amazing job looking back at the foreshadowing and planning of these three novels. I cannot wait to read more of her work in the future.

Overall, this was an EXCELLENT novel and series. I do not have enough descriptive words to use for this series. You are probably tired of reading me saying how good this series and book is already, but seriously I would put this series up with the big ones, like Throne of Glass and The Cruel Prince. Legend of the Lakes definitely exceeded my expectations until the very twisty-turny end. This series is amazing and now I need to go and preorder this paperback so I can complete my personal set!

I would like to thank NetGalley and One More Chapter HC for sending me a free copy for review.

A wonderful end to a magical and thrilling trilogy.

Once I got past the first book I lost sleep over the next two books! Clara O’Connor created a magical and epic story in The Once and Future Queen and I loved all of it! This third and final book brought us back to Londonium, where it all started for Cass. Much has changed in four years, she’s grown as a woman and as a powerful magical being and she’s here to fix the corruption that’s been happening in the magical pathways that lay below the earth. The worst of which lies within Londonium. There’s much to be revealed in the third book. More secrets, more heartbreak, more games to be played. Throughout it all, Cass is determined to accomplish what her mother could not and she’s possibly sacrificing everything she’s ever wanted. I highly recommend these books. I loved all the characters, I loved the magic, I loved the concept of this world and I loved the love story between the Lady of the Lake and her Griffin. Easy book recommendation!

I had read the first 2 books as ARC’s but the third book I purchased. I’d gladly purchase these books because I enjoyed them so much.

Legend of the Lakes is an emotional rollercoaster of a finale for the excellent Once and Future Queen trilogy by Clara O’Connor.

What I Loved

I loved how much the main character, Cassandra/Catriona matured from the first book to the last. She started as a shallow, two-dimensional young adult who was very hard to connect to or even like. But through the second and third installments of the trilogy, she learned about love, experienced profound losses, and became a multidimensional, caring, and relatable young woman who can carry the reader through the despair of feeling like there is no way out to the highs of her successes.

The world-building through the trilogy is so comprehensive and sensory that it pulled me in instantly. Once you are outside the walls of Londinium, you forget that you are in a version of a current day world and think you are in a historical fantasy taking place in King Arthur’s time. Instead, Londinium, an ancient Greek-inspired dystopian world, reminds you that you are in the present through the technology they use but otherwise feels every inch ancient. It’s a fascinating juxtaposition of two very different civilizations that enhance the themes of power and corruption.

The magic system, found outside of the walls, is nature-based and is dying due to the corruption of the ley lines. The magic is not unlike folklore of Arthurian legend, but I enjoyed that the story stuck to what we know and added on to that system. The Lady of the Lake, other than giving Excalibur to Arthur, is an enigma, but through this story, I got a much deeper look at a possible version of the life and purpose of the Lady.

To Read or Not to Read

If you want to immerse yourself in an Arthurian-inspired fantasy world, you need to look no further than this immersive, emotional, and wondrous one found in the Once and Future Queen.

Fantastic conclusion to the series. We start with Cass reeling from the grief of losing Devyn and taking up her role as Lady of the lakes. Cass has grown from petulant spoilt pampered princess to a woman with a strong sense of duty - even at the expense of her family and loved ones. The dynamic with her and Gideon is … (smacks lips) - I love a good enemies to lovers trope. We also see the culmination of the war between Londinium and The Wilders with some very unforeseeable twists and turns.

This was a very enjoyable read - I did it in one sitting as I couldn’t put the book down. The series kept getting better and better. I didn’t enjoy the first book and I think that’s because I didn’t like the narrator of the audiobook ( maybe also because Cass came across as really whiny and entitled - which to be fair was in keeping with her character at the time). However, by the second book I was enthralled and was on tenterhooks for the finale and it didn’t disappoint. Highly recommended YA series with a great alternative (I guess dystopian) historical slant.

I really enjoyed this series and the world depicted, you could so clearly picture everything as it happened and I think it is world and story for all ages.

I found this book started off a little slow, I was so excited to see what would happen after the end of the second book but it took time to get into it. I understand Cassandra went through a huge ordeal and overcoming such grief would be so hard, but sometimes just wanted to give her a shake as her melancholy dragged on a lot throughout the book and slowed the pace. I hoped for a bit more action to quicken up the pace but that came crammed in at the final quarter of the book. But we got the plot twists, betrayals, reveals and more and the pace was then so enthralling you didn't want to put the book down!

So overall, I really loved this series. The world, the story, the magic and more was so fresh and exciting. I hope it becomes more wellknown amongst other fantasy readers.

Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read and review these books before their publication.

Legend of the Lakes is the finishing series by Clara o' Connor. What an epic on also! Non stop action, pull on heart strings, knuckle bitting, much of NOOOOOOO.

It left of With Catriona aka Cassandra as lady of the lake. ( Taking their mothers place) her brother Rion Deverell is the King of Mercia. Has his hands full trying to prevent from being attacked by Londinum and making sure his sister doesn't overwork herself up keeping the ley lines.

Gideon the Lady of the lakes Griffth job is to protect and serve. Which includes Making sure she doesn't overwork herself. The leylines are in deep disrepair. ( Magical Ley Lines )

You have alot of beautiful scenery for the imagination, places such as Avalon. I kind of picture Mercia as England with Ireland together.

I'm grateful to get a chance to read this!! Very strong writing and descriptive. Badass characters too.

Book was given to me by netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
