With the Stronghold of Eredain secured against the Darkness, Aranos and his party are finally free to travel to the lost city of Antas and pursue Geltheriel's Cleansing Quest. Phil and his new party are leveled up and ready to meet Aranos there. Surely, the combined powers and talents of both parties will make short work of the city's defenders! Nothing is ever that simple in Singularity Online, though. There are still mysteries appearing in Eredain. The High Roads are far more dangerous than anything Aranos faced in the Blightlands, and the city of Antas has already repelled assaults from both human and elven armies...with no survivors returning. Discovering the more potent Enhanced Aspects of magic will help Aranos penetrate the Library of Antas and its secret Vault, but just using them could destroy him. At the same time, Aranos has to learn about his new noble title and how to build the fledgling House Evenshade through alliances and the efforts of the group of Travelers that once tried to kill him but now call him their Lord. Yet, it seems as if a hidden hand is working to bring his House down almost before he's built it. Dealing with any of these challenges would be a Quest in and of itself, but facing them all at once will put Aranos to the ultimate test...and place him face-to-face with an old enemy and their incredibly powerful new master. Can Aranos find a way into the Fallen City, penetrate the Vault, and claim his reward? Can he forge the alliances he needs to safeguard House Evenshade? Does he have the imagination, passion, and courage to stand forth as a Lord Sorcerer?
This book contains profanity and alludes to sexual situations. It does not contain harem fantasy or sex scenes.
Kyle Johnson is a kids gymnastics and martial arts instructor who teaches outside of Chicago. He's worked on cruise ships, traveled the world, climbed glaciers, ziplined between mountains, and even danced in the end of a rainbow.
Currently, his main hobbies include helping his wife raise their two kids, because after that, who's got time for hobbies?
Why is it so hard to find good litrpg? This author should have shortened the story to less than half then it might have been readable I found myself dreading each time the characters learned a new skill or fought a battle. I don't know if it could be drawn out longer. I don't know how the reviews are so high but maybe this will help someone avoid this terrible book.
I've really enjoyed the story, the NPCs are all good characters with satisfactorily backgrounds, the player characters are bare bones and the world creation is minimal .The MC is interesting but overpowered and half the book is spent with him building spells and exploring mana, this was interesting in the earlier books but tedious and beyond my will to understand now ,and I found myself skimming page after page also I really dislike the Neo-dyne/Newsome plot line that is bubbling under the surface,so to recap,if you enjoy and understand the technique of building spells and the combining of numerous types of mana you'll love this book and if you don't it's still a good story
My partner is beginning to dread whenever a Singularity Online book is released for the simple fact that I cease being able to socialise and function until the book has been read!
This is turn is compounded by the invigorating length of this book, a nice change from the increasingly short books this genre seems to generate! The character progression is nicely paced, believable and the changes to the party that occur stir emotions throughout!
My only issue is that there are a few editing issues when I read this book (Jan 2021) (wrong names used and spelling mistakes) but that doesn’t detract from the excellent book!
It is so rare to come across books that are actually packed with magic. I love reading about competent powerful characters but sadly that’s difficult to come by. This book delivers on that and more. The only issue I have spotted so far is the “do no wrong” troupe. That’s when the MC makes whatever decisions they want and regardless of consequences those around them essentially turn out to be yes men. Admittedly his decisions are not bad but there is definitely a lack of consideration of the opinions of those around him. I loved this book and I don’t know how others felt, but pleasssse if anyone relevant reads this leave the magic and slightly OP aspect of the book. I throughly enjoy how powerful he is and that there is still greater depths of power to uncover.
And I, for one, guess wrong often enough to get exciting and entertaining surprises from his plot lines. Though in this novel one of the surprises was somewhat saddening and depressing — which shows that Mr. Johnson's writing can evoke a wide range of emotions with his writing.
This is a LitRPG novel; the third in a series of seven (so far?) which may be of interest to fans of the broader Fantasy genre and to fans of the Science Fiction genre as well — given the underlying premise of the series being the hypothesized coming "Singularity" event.
Book 3 of a fantasy LitRPG or GameLIT series about a futuristic in-development VR system where people use it for a week or more to play in a D&D like fantasy world. I'm still loving this series especially how much focus there is on progression. So many skills, spells, perks, titles, mana types that can be unlocked, upgraded, or combined. The protagonist Aranos/Jeff is still overpowered but there are at least some explanations provided for that. I still really like how each book has its own climax and the story doesn't just stop/pause like most LitRPG series.
I really enjoyed the book. It read very well And had lots of cool loot and crafted items and great battles with good tactics
Additionally I loved how powerful the main character and his friends and companions are. Yet as strong as they have become they must be careful and smart or they lose.
The only draw back is the profanity. This book would be rated PG-13 if it were a movie and I recommend it to that group. It's a good series and book.
This series is excellent full of battles, magic, and levelling. Throw in love, death and betrayals and you’ve got a fantastic read that shoots along at a great pace and leaves you wanting more.
In fact my only beef with the great world and story the author has created is the in-depth spell creation notifications. They do slow things slightly and to be honest I started ignoring them halfway through.
Other than that excellent so get a copy and enjoy...
I honestly could not stop reading this! I devoured this book in 2 days. The twists and turns made you feel as if you were on an emotional rollercoaster. And the noble self-sacrifice of a beloved character? I was in shock and mourned, myself. An excellent offering.
The magic and skills remain as important pieces of the book, unlike so many that start to tell random wish fulfillment the characters continue to evolve, enhance themselves, and progress. Characters feel like true individuals, not just a main character with a bunch of supporting ones. I cannot wait for the next installment!
Kyle Johnson has quickly become one of my favorite authors. His ability to mix the grand scope of an epic fantasy novel with the intricate detail of a web serial is astounding. I highly recommend this series, and this book if you've already read the first two. I can't wait for #4!
The third book to the series is solid, but I have one personal gripe. The first 200ish pages were referencing the previous books so much that 30-40% of those pages were just rehashing. I understand that the books aren't released back to back and people need to be reminded, but it felt excessive. Could just be a me thing.
The story went way to far in describing everything!!..It could have been condensed into one book !! The writer finally got a story going in the end and that is the only reason I have it a 5 starr instead of 1, cannot really recommend this series based on all the turning of pages that I did not read!!
Excellent world building and story. However the book seriously needs a pass from a competent editor. I was taken out of the story multiple times by obvious errors The author deserves to have their story told properly. Get a good editor for your future books sir please.
Well he’s gone and done it again. This book was another book of growth and fascinating adventure. That ending just set up a perfect book 4. Can’t wait for the next one.
This was a really good third book. The author clearly isn’t afraid to make some hard decisions. Aranoses mastering of magic was a really well put together plot. Excited for the next book!
For the love of Bacon, can you Authors please start your books with the Main Character. This story of a Beta testing computer programmer who rises to the top of testers by understanding the magic system as a sorcerer is absolutely fantastic.
This was an awesome wrap-up for the first three books, while still leaving it open for a lot more to happen. It was a great continuation of the series and characters. I really connected with the characters and loved to see them grow. I highly recommend reading this one.
I'm impressed with the writing by Mr Johnson and really enjoyed this third book in the series. I'm also very saddened by the loss of one of the characters (no I'm not telling). I look forward to the next book in this series.
3rd book which just reinforces the skill and dedication the author has to tell an amazing world, building it from the ground up with great characters, emotion, magic, and action. Well done, looking forward to book 4!
I won't say why, because I hate spoilers, but the loss of a half star was because the author did something to one of their characters that I get increasingly frustrated with many recent storytellers for doing. Still a great story, though.
No more delays reaching the fallen city! Ok, some delays - but reasonable ones. The action just keeps on stepping up, and the magic and skills just keep on ramping up. Now more players are on the field, and action, reaction, wins - and losses - appear. Great work!
I really enjoyed this series. I know that some people think it's overpowered but I truly enjoy the concept and the execution and how it's written. And there's quite a few books in the series, so starting late I have plenty to read. Yay me!
I have really enjoyed this series and look forward to reading the next book. My only complaint is to much time is spent on spell creation and not enough action.
