Joe Gores was a solid, professional writer. He wrote crisp, to the point sentences, and his stories are hard-boiled but also about recognizable human beings. One story, "The Andrech Samples" is s.f., the kind of s.f. people who don't write s.f. write, but still has a point to make and makes it, though I think Gores writing s.f. is a misstep. I don't find Gores's stories especially invigorating, but they all entertain, and the final two in this 8 story collection really raise the collection in my estimation: "Killer Man," concerns a hit man's hit gone sideways; "Goodbye, Pops," an Edgar Award winner, concerns an escaped convict visiting his father on his death bed.
