The story of 12-year-old Enoch Parnell's experience when his family moves into a black ghetto where his father has just bought a hardware store - and where Enoch is one of the few white boys. The tensions between Enoch and the black gangs, and between Enoch and his parents accelerate. His family is befriended by a black handyman who helps them adjust.
