Comenzó a publicar a principios de los noventa, relatos en su mayor parte. Da el salto a la novela con Las fuentes perdidas (La Factoría de Ideas) en el año 2003. Desde entonces ha orientado su carrera hacia la literatura juvenil, con obras como La casa de la Colina Negra (Alfaguara), la trilogía El ciclo de la Luna Roja y La canción secreta del mundo (Ambas con la editorial Hidra). Tiene varios premios en su haber, entre ellos el UPC de novela corta de ciencia ficción por Salir de Fase, y el premio Alberto Magno, del que ha sido ganador en tres ocasiones.
Mezcla sin pudor ni vergüenza la fantasía, la ciencia ficción y el terror, a veces hasta en la misma historia. Sus historias se caracterizan por la importancia de los escenarios, los giros argumentales sorprendentes y por un gusto por lo oscuro y macabro que lo emparentan con Clive Barker, autor del que Cotrina se confiesa seguidor.
Su última novela es El fin de los sueños, escrita en colaboración con Gabriella Campbell y publicada por la editorial Plataforma.
Ha sido traducido al inglés, al polaco, al checo, al italiano y al chino y canta fatal.
