3 stars.

This turned out to be more like an account of events related to the author and two rescue dogs she fostered. Being a dog lover, it was fun as I could relate to most of the silly behaviors that these pawed friends exhibit that simply take our hearts away- be it butt-licking other dogs, chasing butterflies, making the puppy face when they crave for food or belly rubs- the list is endless, smh.

However, the lack of detailing in the individual stories was why it turned out to be pretty monotonous. The writing appeared pretty juvenile and not really keeping me engrossed till the end. Thankfully it was fast paced and short, so could wrap it up in a day. Though even that felt tedious.

3 stars because of the dogs. Much obvious.

That extra-friendly black-and-white dog I see at the beach every weekend, what does he do after humans leave? That reclusive brown dog I see at the tea stall, why does she prefer buns to biscuits? That senior white dog I used to see on my biking route, what is he doing now? Would he be lonely? Or does he have friends? What’s their story? How did they start living on the roads? Aparna Karthikeyan makes me ask such questions through her book Woof!: Adventures by The Sea. All the animals we see in public places, how much do we know about their lives, and how can we make their lives better? In the heartwarming tale about a pack that lives on the Mumbai beach, Aparna offers subtle answers. She throws gentle spotlight on the strays, our own Indian mongrels, and relates their stories with imagination that brims with authenticity, and empathy. If Nilanjana Roy’s The Wildlings made me purr for the cats in Delhi, Aparna Karthikeyan’s Woof! makes my imaginary tail wag, wag, wag for the strays in Mumbai.

On the third day of the great Mumbai monsoon, a small cardboard box appeared on the beach. It had rained and rained all afternoon; the sky was still and grey, and the sand was soggy. The box got wet very quickly. It started wriggling. The jute rope around its middle danced; the packaging tape along its sides bulged. Suddenly, a leg punched a hole through the top; quickly, another popped out. Then came a very long nose. And one folded ear. By the time half the creature had emerged, a small crowd had gathered. They were all dogs. And they were not happy.

The life on the beach is hard for the Don, and her friends. They are all stray dogs. Besides the harsh elements — the sun, the sand, and the sea — their souls are battered by the sheer struggle of living amidst a sea of humanity that ignores their existence, or unleashes its cruelty on them. Adding to their misery, there’s now another puppy — our heroine Shingmo. She will now become a part of their pack (the alpha is a girl, and that’s refreshing!), their joy, their everyday battles, and above all, she will go on a bigger adventure. While Shingmo is our heroine, the story just doesn’t follow her. The narrator knows about every dog in the pack, and even everything about their rivals. All the dogs’ backstories are memorable, their voices unique, their characteristics distinct. It’s only right to say that the book’s cast is an ensemble.

Woof! starts with a very delightful illustration. It’s an introduction of the characters, with some adorable adjectives about each dog’s personality. Throughout the book, Sagar Kolwankar’s artwork is a fitting companion to Aparna Karthikeyan’s story. Just like how, in Aparna’s words, the dogs’ unique traits come to the surface, the illustrations, even if shown without any captions, can make me identify the dogs. Who can forget Thin’s Dustbin-is-Best face!

You know, people keep talking about this thing called kindess; they write poems and songs about it, but I haven’t really seen it much… Of course, some people are kind, but mostly, they’re very, very busy. They don’t have time to notice us; we’re just lumps curled up on the sand.

A rounded commentary about humans is made by Thug, a misunderstood dog, who just wants to have a chat, be scratched and hugged. People of all types can be found in Woof! Damu doesn’t have money to buy a cup of tea because he spent all that he had to get medicines for the strays. A policeman feeds the dogs biscuits dipped in tea. A woman brings meat and rice for the strays on the beach after a storm stops lashing. These are quotidian scenes in India, and they are even more soul-nourishing when they appear in Woof! because the dogs talk about them. And then there are those who abandon the dogs on the road because the dogs don’t know how to be Labradors, because the dogs are too much responsibility, and because the dogs are forgotten after a baby’s arrival. Imagine reading this book to a child. And how wiser the child would be for knowing that there are all sorts of people, different choices, and what does it take to being right! And, books on dogs don’t have to be awww-inducing, and tickle young readers with stories about goofy dogs. In Woof!, there is an elderly called Coconut, and he is often found ruminating about death. His meditation is full of wisdom, and warmth.

I should be forgiven for being too sure about the belief that stories about strays should end with our heroine finding a home. But Aparna Karthikeyan doesn’t end the book there. She gives that, and more. The pack’s bigger adventure, which makes them heroes in the eyes of the humans, is quite a surprise. The author just doesn’t talk to you, about adopting our Indies, in a non-preachy fashion, but she also decriminalizes the strays through the bigger adventure, and through every back story. She tells you why the strays do what they do. When humans are quick to call the strays a menace, the book shows that knowing them makes it easier to love them, and they should be loved. They deserve nothing less.

Aparna Karthikeyan’s Woof! Adventure By The Sea is a paean to our community dogs, our Indian mongrels. This country is their home, our hearts their thrones.

There’s enough poori in the world for everyone.

"𝘼𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙬𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙚"

This is a story of a dogs gang who lives near beach. The gang members Singmo, Poochu, Krya, Thin, Coconut and Thug has a habit of roaming around the beach areas and they do have a gang leader. One day morning, the dogs find a small box. When they looked inside, they found yet another puppy who was abandoned. Everyone thinks that the new puppy will not survive another day, but to their surprise it starts moving and the dogs decides to keep it with them.
This story is very close to my heart. Being a dog's person, I always befriend at least one dog wherever I stay. I know how I feel whenever I see an abandoned dog. I was able to relate to the story very well. This story is hilarious and emotional. I was literally laughing for every page in this book. The ending is my favorite ( No dogs die at the end. Because I know the feeling 🤣 So you can read this book without any second thoughts). After reading this book, I actually started thinking and giving voices to my dogs. May be who knows, they may also have a gang behind me😍🤣 Such an adorable story. If you are a dogs lover, you are in for a treat, just read this. If not, read this so that you can understand the dog's perspective 😍

Remember those books you read as a child, where three siblings visit their cousin in a village by the sea and after initially being apprehensive around each other, they settle down and have adventures together?
'Woof' is exactly that book. With one small difference; the protagonists are canine, not human.
Singmo, Poochu, Krya, Thin, Coconut, Thug. With a few deft words, Aparna Karthikeyan draws pen portraits of each of the characters, and they come alive in all their idiosyncratic glory.
A must read for anyone who loves dogs, whether or not they are owned by a dog. And a clarion call for everyone- an Indie is no less than a pedigree dog.

This was quite a fun read. I've been a fan of books from the POV of animals since I read Katherine Applegate's books, and this is another that adds to that collection. I loved the doggy characters, be it the Don, or Shingmo, or Puchu, or Thug, or even the elderly Coconut! While it is a fun read, it's not all sunshine, it's about the struggles the dogs face on the beach too, and how they get through it together. I like the opportunity for heroism that comes about, it felt very natural and not forced, and brought a happy moment that was quite welcome. Worth reading. Definitely.

I expected this book to be a charming Indian style book, with the likes of Simply Nanju
This review will be short-'Woof! Adventures By The sea' by Aparna Karthikeyan warms the cockles of my heart. This story will be with me for a long, long time. I love dogs and they love me back - forever 😂 Aparna is so generous to share the adventures of her 2 furry darlings, Puchu and Shingmo with their beach homies who are proud of their Disreputables clan: Krya, Thin, Coconut, Lola, Thug and The Twins. (I remember them all 😍). This has to be the cutest story I've read in all my life. I am high on the cuteness overload.😍 I so want to give each of these little ones a big squishy hug and belly rubs. Can we also talk about the illustrator Sagar Kolwankar's gorgeous doodles? I wish I could purchase a physical copy of this book for memory's sake. Truly a heart-warming story. I love you all little fellow!!!. You stole my heart. Thank you so much, Aparna Karthikeyan for putting a smile on my face. Yay!

I am C.R.Ramana Kailash. read your short novel - "Woof" - last week and I loved the book so much.

Though I am not a true dog person, I used to have interest in identifying their breeds, observing behaviours of feral dogs [it is fun to watch feral dogs exhibit a few behaviors of their wild cousins]. The novel was much like life statements of dogs filled with fun, floods, fight, sun, seas and sometimes tragedy. Although the lives of these dogs are tough, there are a few oases who help them from dangers like the mother and Damu. The story was so intriguing that we traveled with Shingmo, Thin, Coconut and many others throughout the year. Each prominent character in the story has its own tragic story. Orphaned dogs, caring surrogate mothers, wise elders, a good number of friends and caring people the story was filled with love and occasional fights.

Each character in the story was admirable, lovely Shingmo, Gentle Coconut, caring mother like Thin, a fearsome but equally caring leader Krya, A good friend Like Puchu and several others. I loved it very much. I thought that "the disreputables" would be villainous bullies in the story but then they had their own sad spot which gathers sympathy. My sister loved the book and she laughed at every funny one-liner in the story. Most dog books and movie highly hype the creatures and humanise them a lot. But "woof" was a funny roller coaster which didn't affect the dog's true behaviors at all.

So my daughter is completely hooked to the Wimpy Kid series and she finished reading the first two books. While we wait for the next book to be delivered, she doesn't want to read anything else. And in a bid to encourage her to pick up different types of book, I started reading out few chapters from "Woof !:Adventures by the Sea" by Aparna Karthikeyan, a book that I had downloaded couple of months back. And before I knew we had read four chapters and we were completely engaged with the story of this band of beach dogs.

It's a very simple and heart touching story about the life and tribulations of a group of dogs who have made the Mumbai beachside as their home. Their simple joys of eating the food from the roadside eateries, their survival through the storms and rains of Mumbai and the way they stick together through thick and thin, we enjoyed reading it all. A few chapters were really funny and some, like the time the dogs saved a couple of boys in a storm were endearing.

A wonderful and entertaining book. My daughter rates it 5 stars so its a good book for 8-13 year old's(she has her own GR account where she tries to write her views and rates books). We would love to read more books of similar kind from the author.

This book is heartwarming as well as heart-wrenching. The book is told by stray dogs of Mumbai's beach and how they struggle and yet manage to live happily. It discusses how they have to find food amongst the garbage Dumps, find shelter during storms when we humans sit peacefully under our roofs and how they survive the constant struggle of survival itself and manage mostly without the essential vitamins and proper vaccinations. It also describes how few humans help the strays daily by bringing in biscuits or even at times Chicken and how they are always elated to greet these friendly brings. It gives a clear insight into how everyone wants to pet labrador or big fat huskies but nobody wants the strays and how despite all the circumstances they manage to help humans in their own way. It discusses the lives of a few dogs, those who were adopted, then left to die and how some of them were born in the dump. Overall it will make you feel for them and make you lend them your hand for help.
This book is sure to make you empathize with the lovely canines and also make you want to have one. <3

This is a story about dogs who live at the beach in the big city in India. Fun fact: this is the first book i read from Indian author. The stray dogs nearby the beach have adapted to live their life. They should be tough because life is tough for sure. The author emphasised that every dog’s behaviour is shaped by how they were treated before, how they spent their childhood. This is logic. Dogs (perhaps) do not have consciousness, but they have feelings. A sensitive one. So they will act accordingly how they were treated before.

A perfect reading for a gloomy weather

To be honest, I didn’t expect much, but this book turned out to be sweet and entertaining. It’s told from the point of view of a puppy who was abandoned on a beach and later adopted by a fun and kind bunch of dogs.
Although I liked Shingmo and Puchhu bonding, I didn’t particularly enjoyed the part when they were living in a house with (really kind) humans. I enjoyed the beach adventures more.

Nevertheless, the story is heartwarming, and the book includes cute illustrations as well. Overall, I really enjoyed reading it.

A beautiful book that I would recommend to both, kids and adults alike. In fact it is a must read for anyone who is atleast one or more of the following: a dog parent, parent, dog lover, animal lover, beach lover, bombay lover, book lover, indie dog lover... You get the drift! Also, if schools taught animal welfare/compassion in their curriculum this would be a great piece of literature to include.

For the young and the young at heart, for those who love dogs or not, for those who live with them or wish to adopt them, and for those who have been blessed with a doggo’s love in their life.

It is a perfect holiday gift for children and grown-ups as well 🙂

A dollop of doggie adventures and a garnish of lessons in kindness make Woof! a delectable holiday treat.

For those who have ever loved a dog, this book can be a short portal into a world that's warm, kind and fun. It's mostly the author's personal story and supposed to be consumed that way, perhaps. It's a page turner, easy to read book with lovely illustrations. I enjoyed reading it. I hope you love it too. Cheers to our best companions. Woof!

A warm story about a gang of beach dogs!

I started this one to take a break from all the serious novels I had been reading and give a long- due treat to the inner child that resides within me. This sweet story about a gang of beach dogs will warm your heart and make you wish for a chaos- free, simple life by the sea!

It's a good book for children as it let's them imagine as they read.

However, adults might find it too simple and boring in terms of the story continuity, language and ending.
