A Flash Of Magic is a magical and rambunctious compilation featuring eight stories with eight characters as you have never seen them before.
The Tales of Ambia series returns with this charming collection of short stories and novelettes offering a deeper look into a fairytale land like no other.
Whether it’s an intimate look at Ella’s wedding day, a hilarious glimpse of Burndee’s holiday baking, or an explosive first meeting between a prince and his godfather, there is adventure for everyone in A Flash Of Magic.
I am no longer accepting friend requests, but do feel free to follow.

It’s basically an extended feel good scene of what happened at and after the wedding, with Ella and Burndee opening their own bakery called the Magic Pumpkin. This is set after the events of the original book, The Reluctant Godfather, told from (Cinder)Ella’s perspective.
A Letter from Cynthia de Ghent - 3/5
A little prequel to The Reluctant Godfather, which details how Cynthia and Prince Colin met. This is appreciated as Cynthia was basically a background character until she jumped into the spotlight at the end, for the story’s big twist. So it’s appreciated that the gaps are filled from the original story.
An Excerpt from the Journal of Files the Fairy – 3,5/5
Files the Fairy was a very forgettable background character in the second book of the series. While he’s not a character who felt like he needed more time in the spotlight, it’s appreciated that he got an actual short story here, rather than just some fleshing out of his character. Because this story manages to shows us some more world building about the fairies in general.
An Excerpt from the Journal of Prince Colin - 3/5
A prequel to The Reluctant Godfather, detailing the first meeting of the mischievous Prince Colin and his fairy godfather, Burndee.
An Interview with Burndee Rosedale – 3,5/5
Now this is an interesting little story where the reluctant godfather Burndee is pretty much on trial, together with one of his new godchildren. And it’s clear their personalities are clashing because they are so similar to one another. Which is why they were paired together in the first place. There’s also a pretty good twist at the end.
A Letter from Magistrate Valyns - 3/5
Another story about a random side character. The best thing about this story is that witches and guardians are introduced to the world, a concept that will be used in future installments of the Tales of Ambia series. So it’s basically a little teaser for what’s to come. And I have to admit, it’s an interesting concept that could surely spice up the stories and bring the series to a new level.
A Letter from princess Poppy - 3/5
A short winter holiday story. It’s a sleigh-racing contest from Poppy’s perspective that also includes Burndee and Ella.
A Tale of New Year’s Eve - 4/5
Burndee receives so many orders for the winter holidays that he can’t keep up. He’s also annoyed and distracted by the constant celebratory fireworks outside, and the mischievous children who throw snowballs against his bakery’s windows. Ella’s sick, so she can’t help. So Burndee does something that even he never suspected he would do, he asks prince Colin and duke Horace to help him. Even though Colin only came for some jokes at Burndee’s expense and Horace is just there to boast about his new car, they both agree to help.
It’s a collection of short stories in the Tales of Ambia universe. You have to have read the first three books before you tackle this book. Because we get some side stories with the characters we already love. It’s told from their perspective, which is quite a good way to flesh these characters out even more. And the book as a whole is definitely elevated by the author providing a little extra explanation before each and every story. It’s nothing must-read, but it’s a fun little extra for fans of the series.
Some inborn magical abilities. There are definitely rules for those super abilities, and the magic is treated as gifts that ought to be used for good (there are consequences when it is used incorrectly) and it is implied that there is a higher authority magical beings answer to. Hints of affection between a married couple (it mentions one couple in bed together, simply sleeping or talking), and some light kissing. There is some family-friendly violence, mostly knocking people unconscious or hitting badguys/gals. Some name-calling and exclamations like mild exclamations like "blast."
I’ve been so excited for this book and I’m so sad it’s over now 😭 It’s one of those books that I want to instantly reread after finishing it because it was that much fun and so delightful!
I truly adore this world and the setting—and this collection adds to it in even more amusing ways! I loved seeing more of Burndee, Ella, Colin, and different side characters and bonus parts. The problem with typing reviews is that y’all can’t see me grinning like a fool, but I promise that I am. These were great 😂😁 I particularly enjoyed the journal entry about Colin and Burndee’s first meeting and laughed out loud at many parts of it.
A few thoughts on the other ones in this collection: Letter from Ella- adorable! 🥰
Letter from Cynthia- silly cuteness (I love silly cuteness)
Journal from Files- I don’t know how I can greatly enjoy both Burndee and Files when they can’t stand the other, but this was great fun 😂
Interview- This interview between Burndee and his new ward had me nearly howling in laughter!
Letter from Valyns- I didn’t really remember him from Book 2, but he quickly won me over in this section. This series really has excellent side characters and I love how the author shares fairytale retellings from different perspectives! The Wild Swans story has become a possible favorite of mine and this was great as well!
Letter from Poppy- very fun! Love the competitive bonding between Burndee and Poppy—I recommend to read with a cozy blanket and cup of hot cider.
New Year’s Eve- 10/10 no notes (actually, yes, notes, this was so much fun and I snorted from laughing so hard. Needed it to be longer at the end!)
Overall verdict: Wonderful and a must-read for fans of the prior books.
Main Content- Old-school Disney-like magic with moving items around and helping with chores; A kitten is also transformed into a buttonhook when Burndee is surprised by the cat (but is changed back and unharmed); A schoolroom skeleton is also made able to dance; Seeing magic used and seeing magical transformations; Burndee is (to his dismay) a fairy godfather and there’s lots of mentions of that and other fairies; If magic is used by favorites wrongly or against others, their magic will be restrained for some time; Some humans do not believe in magic to fairies being real, but some do; It is illegal for humans to use magic.
One story introduces the concept of witches and warlocks to this series and it’s said they are fairies who have gone bad and that because of this rebellion against their true calling, their physical appearance changes and eventually kills them; Mentions of all of this and their black magic.
A few mentions of fairies cursing others for not being invited to an event (which one character thinks is a conspiracy theory); A couple mentions of elves; A mention of a haunted cemetery.
Colin raises his eyes heavenward and asks for help when dealing with a trying person; A young Colin os called “His Holy Terror” behind his back; A mention of a couple being married in a chapel.
No language stronger than ‘blasted’, ‘gosh’, ‘idiot’, ‘shut up’, ‘stupid’ are said (some frequently); A decent amount of name calling (mainly from Burndee when stressed to the max); A couple mentions of curses (one is said but not written, the rest is implied and said to be “sailor talk”); Eye rolling & sarcasm; The word “midgets” is used to describe a group of children by Burndee; Burndee yells at a group of children and when they yell that he is mean, he feels a bit of guilt.
A character is held at gunpoint; Another character kicks a person and it knocks them person out; A man makes a couple of disparaging remarks about another who seems to be unable to talk or to read; When very stressed, Burndee thinks about crawling into an oven and asking someone to turn it on.
Many mentions of & thoughts about killing or harming another when majorly stressed (mainly from Burndee about Colin when Colin pushes Burndee’s buttons); Mentions of deaths & grief (including of a mother and wife; Also including a Young Colin choosing to disobey a couple of his mother’s rules to punish her for not being there anymore and his nanny thinking based off a comment he made that he doesn’t want to live anymore without his mother (which wasn’t what he meant)); Mentions of a group planning to burn someone alive because they think she is a witch (does not happen and she is not); Mentions of events in the prior books (including a young woman being locked in a room by a family member, someone focusing another to take their place, & being threatened); Mentions of lies, lying, gossip, & rumors; Mentions of hunting; A few mentions of potential hangings for harming a prince; A few mentions of possible drunks; A few mentions of mounted animal heads; A couple mentions of wars & murders; A couple mentions of whippings; A couple mentions of jealousy; A mention of a possible serial killer; A mention of a man using a whip on his reindeer in a race.
A married couple shares a few kisses (nothing over a sentence in length) & hand hands; A few mentions of flirting.
Aaaaaah, this book was such a perfect way to start off my year, especially since it has a story that takes place on New Year's Eve! As one expects from Ambia, every story was pleasantness and laughs. Allison did an amazing job writing from the perspective of multiple different characters and giving them each strong, unique voices. I think my favorite stories were "A Letter from Cynthia de Ghent," "An Excerpt from the Journal of Prince Colin," "An Interview with Burndee Rosedale" (oh my goodness, which fairy thought that pairing was a good idea? XD), and "A Letter from Magistrate Valyns," but all the stories had something lovable about them. I enjoyed seeing more about the characters we know and love and getting to know new characters whom we only glimpsed in past stories. The retelling of "The Wild Swans" was especially clever and fun. Also, Files the fairy and his journalized observations reminded me vaguely of Eustace Scrubb at the start of his journeys in Narnia, LOL. 100% recommended to fans of the Tales of Ambia!
I love Ambia! And this collection of tales is no exception! AFoM and TRM are probably my favourites, but I dearly love them all. Did I read the last three books in less than 24 hours? Absolutely!
Prepare to laugh heartily and fall in love all over again with your favourite characters and a few less familiar faces!
In no particular order, my favourite selections were (1) the interview between Burndee, Fey, and one of his temporary ward Gemma. (2) Poppy and Burndee in the sled race. (3) Burndee on New Year’s Eve. 😂
A delightful little collection of Ambia stories that really cheered me up while I had the stomach flu this week. And may I just say, sir, that "Wild Swans" retelling was PURE ART. Allison Tebo took one of my least favorite fairy tales and turned it into something brilliant. Bravo!
I have been a HUGE fan of the Tales of Ambia, ever since the very first book released. This series of fairy tale retellings follow a grumpy fairy godfather Burndee and his acquaintances in the light steampunk world of Ambia where hilarious fairy tale mishaps happen, shenanigans ensue, and a lot of heart is found along the way.
These family-friendly stories bring me joy every single time, so imagine my delight when Tebo announced she was compiling an anthology of Ambia short stories and novellas!
And it proved to be just as delightful and magical as the title suggests.
From prequel stories that take place before the events of the main series, to glimpses right within familiar moments, and then a couple of sequel stories, this anthology is truly a gift for all of us Ambia fans.
Though I do suggest reading the three Ambia books of the main series first, this collection is an utter treat for those of us who have. It gives a peek into the events and characters of Ambia we otherwise wouldn’t have had a chance to explore. As an extra treat, before each story, the author puts a note sharing why she wrote that particular story, and I found these little behind-the-scenes looks just as fun as the stories themselves! Most of the stories themselves also come in epistolary form, adding an extra bit of uniqueness and enjoyment to the collection.
THE STORIES
A Letter from Ella Rosedale
The collection starts off with a darling letter from Ella herself as she recalls the events leading up to her wedding and how her life changed afterward, all written in Ella’s sweet, if not a bit scatterbrained, style. And I was grinning through every word. I loved exploring the world through Ella’s eyes and seeing how she puts such an adorable spin on things. It was precious all the way around.
A Letter from Cynthia de Ghent
This had to be one of my favorites! This time we’re treated with a prequel story of how Cynthia and Prince Colin met, which is a story I’ve wanted ever since meeting them in the first book years ago! Tebo truly catered to her fans with this one. The meeting between fiery Cynthia and far-too-charming-and-mischievous for his own good Colin was every bit as disastrous and hilarious as one expected it to be. The last two lines had me grinning so hard. Pure gold.
An Excerpt from the Journal of Files the Fairy
Ooooh man, this story. Files is a courier who—ah—is a bit too uppity for his own good, to put it lightly. This impudent fairy messenger gets what’s coming to him when he’s assigned to take a note to a fairy who is not one to put up with anyone’s nonsense, especially one as pompous as Files. Only Allison Tebo can write an entire story from the point-of-view of such an unlikable fellow and make it hilariously delightful from beginning to end. I was giggling myself silly all the way through.
An Excerpt From the Journal of Prince Colin
Another absolute favorite of mine! We finally get the story of how Burndee and Colin meet and OOOH MY. If you think grumpy Burndee and impish Colin are a disaster as adults, just imagine the sheer chaos that ensues when they’re young. This story had me in absolute stitches. But, true to Tebo’s characteristic style, it was also so full of heart and I legitimately got teary-eyed near the end. Only to burst into laughter instantly again with the final line. Such is Tebo’s way!
An Interview with Burndee Rosedale
We get a fun peek at some deeper worldbuilding in this little tale that takes on a courtroom-style interview. And, as it features Burndee against a woman who may be a little too much like him, you can imagine there is much blustering about and mayhem. It was great.
A Letter from Magistrate Valyns
THIS STORY. This may have genuinely been my top favorite of the entire collection, which is surprising as it doesn’t feature anyone from the main cast. But even Tebo’s tiny side characters are utterly loveable, and Valyns is no exception. This is a retelling of The Wild Swans, one of my favorite fairy tales in the world, and one that does not have nearly enough retellings, so I was thrilled to find one in this collection. And IT. WAS. BRILLIANT. We get the whole story from an outside point-of-view, and Valyns’ mild-mannered way as he tries to discover the strange events regarding a seemingly mute girl obsessed with sewing with nettles was just a treat. It was such a unique point-of-view for this fairy tale, and I was soaking up every single bit of it. Just…BRILLIANCE.
A Letter from Princess Poppy
It was a joy getting a little story from dear Poppy’s point-of-view, made even more enjoyable by the wintry festive setting. Poppy finds herself partaking in a wild race involving sleighs and reindeer…and Burndee, and whew boy. It was a wildly fun ride! (Pun totally intended.) Tebo ingeniously captured the danger and excitement within the narrative, and I felt like I was right there with Poppy during her thrilling adventure.
A Tale of New Year’s Eve
The collection ends with a full novella featuring Burndee as he is overcome with far too many holiday orders from his bakery. Poor stressed Burndee has to take drastic measures…measures that may involve Prince Colin and Duke Horace. And if you know these three, I’m sure you can picture the commotion to follow. This chaotic tale was the perfect (and hilarious) end to a wonderfully delightful collection.
CONTENT CAUTIONS
The Tales of Ambia books are refreshingly clean and perfect for young and older readers alike. They do feature magic, but all in a very fairy tale style. The magic is treated as gifts that are to be used as good and there are consequences when used otherwise.
The stories in general can easily be enjoyed by children and adults. Squeaky clean, fun, and wholesome all around.
CONCLUSION
Allison Tebo has done it again, gifting us stories filled to the brim with her witty style, hilarious shenanigans, and wholesome messages. This collection both put me in giggling fits and filled me up. It was such a treat getting a deeper look at the world of Ambia and the dynamic characters who live within. I adored every single word.
(Also, the cover is PINK. There are not enough pink book covers in the world!)
If you’re a fan of the Ambia tales, I cannot recommend this one enough. Delightful, charming, and hilarious—it is not to be missed!
I definitely would encourage you to read the first three books of the Tales of Ambia Series to fully enjoy this one, however I feel you could jump right into this one and still find all the stories within the pages of this book enchanting.
Author Allison Tebo is so good at what she does, taking fairytales and giving them a new twist. This book was no exception and all the stories contained in it were so fun to read!
(And might I also say that I loved reading the author’s notes before each story? The level of care and thought that she poured into each tale is inspiring and wonderful.)
A delightful new fairytale anthology, A FLASH OF MAGIC, has been released at last! It’s the latest installment in the Tales of Ambia, a popular and well-loved series of romantic comedy fairytale retellings by author Allison Tebo.
Set in a beautiful, lively world full of amusing twists, A FLASH OF MAGIC features a beloved cast of familiar characters led by a grumpy fairy and his quirky friends.
For five years, the Tales of Ambia novellas have never ceased to make me laugh, warm my heart, and endear me to delightful characters, again and again.
In a new anthology of sequel short stories, A FLASH OF MAGIC does all this once more, just as much or more than each of the preceding novellas.
It’s a collection of eight incredible stories in one full-length volume, after all! The fun, hilarity, friendship, and comfort are multiplied by the number of perspectives and episodes following eight characters and their companions, old and new.
(Note: A FLASH OF MAGIC is a sequel to several other books. The series should be read from the beginning for the best experience.)
Ever since the publication of THE RELUCTANT GODFATHER, the first hilarious, heartwarming fairytale novella in the Ambia book series, readers have waited for each sequel.
I’ve watched the excitement of so many of Ambia’s loyal readers and fans, as they fall in love with each new book—and as we anticipate Burndee’s next adventures and enjoy the previous ones, ever after.
Returning to Ambia feels like coming back to a cozy home where I belong. There is no book more charming and uplifting, yet hilarious and adventurous.
It is a dream come true to share this joy and experience with its devoted audience, at last!! A FLASH OF MAGIC is here to continue the legacy of Ambia.
And if you haven’t read THE RELUCTANT GODFATHER, you’re in for a treat! Read the whole series today and be delighted.
I happen to be the editor for the Tales of Ambia. The fact that I can enjoy each story to the full, even as I read and edit them again and again, is a testament to the enjoyable quality of these books.
Now for my spoiler free reviews of each individual story!
This anthology is meant for Ambia’s loyal superfans, new and old, who have read the preceding books. A FLASH OF MAGIC contains spoilers for the previous books.
Dedicated fans won’t need any encouragement to eat up the latest book. But if you want to read a review without spoilers, this is it!
The author, Allison Tebo, has posted spoilery tidbits on her Instagram before this release. But my review stays away from spoilers, for anyone who wants that.
Ella
I was overcome by sweetness when hearing Ella talk about her newfound happiness and her life with a special someone. It is the warmest and most beautiful thing to read. Ella's voice, story, and experiences filled my heart and settled into a home inside me, with a comforting, soft contentment.
I love seeing the world and characters from Ella's point of view, for the first time. She is an incredible woman and one of my favorite female characters I've ever read. If I'm even a little like her in kindness, care, strength, and love, that's enough for me.
I especially love the way Ella sees her special person. The chance to see things through her eyes was something I had wanted since the beginning. I've been longing for more of her story and her life with her loved ones. I was overjoyed to see a full and satisfying glimpse of her future in this letter!
And I was possibly even more delighted to be able to watch a few of the earlier parts of her story that I'd always imagined for myself, wondered about, and wished to see.
Cynthia
I had so much fun watching Cynthia and Colin’s first meeting. It was a hilarious romp with plenty of sparks and a deep connection--not surprising given the lively personalities of this pair! I've been craving more of their story and early friendship for a long, long time, so it's wonderful to finally see it. And it was even more entertaining and engaging than I would have known!
I love that their relationship goes deeper than the outward fun or sparring. There's true camaraderie, loyalty, care, support, teamwork, and understanding that comes from a deep place. Now that I know where it started, it makes sense!
Files
One of the funniest entries in this anthology, A Flash of Magic, was “The Journal of Files the Fairy.” I laughed hard throughout…on my first read and every reread.
The witty writing, masterful point of view, and quirky character development were so much fun. It was amusing to see someone else’s view of Burndee. It comes from a hypocrytical character who is unaware of his own very skewed perspective on the world. Sound familiar?
If you like unreliable narrators, clashing personalities, flawed characters, and heights of comedy, this one is for you! Loyal Ambia fans will love getting to know Files better, in all his loathsome but endearing arrogance.
Burndee
Burndee doesn’t write letters, but we got to see plenty of him too. If you love him with all his flaws, as a fascinating and endearing character, you’ll enjoy seeing him brazen his way through an uncomfortable confrontation with someone just as headstrong as himself.
I was entertained by the heated battle of wills, the clash of wildly different goals, and the amusing—and unexpectedly insightful—satire on our society as well as Burndee’s world.
Valyns
Somehow, I didn’t expect such an intriguing story from such a mild-mannered and quiet man as Magistrate Valyns. But as always, he has hidden depths that surprised me! Once I began reading his story, I couldn’t make myself stop! I liked it so very much.
I enjoyed the character of Valyns years ago when I first read A Royal Masquerade. He surprised me then too–but he became a favorite, with his quiet sympathy turning to his excitement as his world was turned upside down.
The first time I read this story in Valyns’ witty, warm voice, I could not stop reading! I read it very rapidly in a short space of time. The same thing happened AGAIN when I read it a second time months later. Even though I already knew what happened, I anticipated it and experienced it again as if I was living it. I had to keep uncovering the story.
The plot and mystery and characters just kept moving, and I followed them eagerly. Valyns’ narration and adventures were so charming and delightful, and I wanted to know what happened next.
There was never a dull moment even when it was quiet, and just when I was about to reluctantly tear myself away to go about my day and wonder what would happen next…something exciting and perplexing would happen, to keep me glued to the page.
I smiled or laughed multiple times per page, at something witty or comedic, heartwarming or sweet, intriguing or lively.
It’s Valyns himself that makes the story so amazing, along with a friend he meets along the way. He’s a delightful character, as a support to the central character of each book, and now as a narrator and protagonist in his own right.
Valyns’ voice, personality, and ways of relating to people are vivid and real. I would love to be friends with him and talk to him in real life, but I already feel as if I have. I can hear his voice audibly as I read, and see his quirks of expression, his thoughtfulness and kindness, his gentle care for people, and his clever sense of humor, wit, intelligence, and amusement.
I’m at the stage in life when I’m still relatively young, but I enjoy reading about mature characters and protagonists of ALL ages. It’s so fun to find a 40-something, scholarly bachelor protagonist whom I can relate to–both to see him as a friend and see myself in him!
Valyns was already a favorite supporting character after I met him and enjoyed him immensely in A Royal Masquerade–and that after misjudging him at first!
He’s now rocketed upward to a place among the collection of my favorite major supporting characters in the entire Ambia series, right behind the main few characters.
And his new story is one of my favorites, even though it’s hard to choose. I enjoyed spending time with him properly and hearing him tell his story.
I can’t wait to encounter him again in future Ambia books–and hopefully enjoy another full adventure with Valyns front and center! I hope there’s more to come from him, and I feel there could be.
Poppy
Poppy's story is delightful, full of breathtaking sensory details of a sparkling land and rushing wind. The adventure and vivid setting captivated me, stimulated my mind, and transported me to Ambia. I felt as if I, too, stood there surrounded by the life, color, noise, breezes, and scents.
Most of all, this episode of Poppy's story is another step in the journey of a young woman bravely seeking home, love, and a future, in a culture and land where she's a stranger.
I was so proud to see Poppy continue her goal of finding her courage and believing she is loved. She spreads her wings, begins to accept friendship, and discovers a love for adventure and thrills.
A final sparkle...
A FLASH OF MAGIC ends with a dynamic short story depicting a festivity and celebration…but of course Burndee has trouble enjoying noise and bustle and busyness!
It’s a great opportunity for a flawed, stressed fairy to grow in some difficult ways–even if he hates every minute! I enjoyed seeing Burndee go through a short character arc that’s complete and very significant.
And I enjoyed his crazy adventures, mishaps, mistakes, explosions of all kinds, and clashes, along the way!
I especially enjoyed seeing new interactions and partnerships with some of the existing characters in Ambia–Burndee’s closest companions and others that he’d rather not have around.
The final story is such a warm, lively, and satisfying ending to the anthology–and the perfect way to celebrate real-world festivities!
3.5 ⭐️ I liked this one! Allison Tebo does a fantastic job with all of her short stories. It’s very inspiring to me how much can be done in a simple short story. All of the side characters were really adorable and the personalities of the main characters really shone bright. Burndee is really quite funny, tho his humor is sometimes quite dark 😬🤪
A Flash of Magic Tales of Ambia #4 By Allison Tebo
A Flash of Magic is a collection of tales that expand on the previous stories of the series. There is no chronological place for this book to fall as each of the eight stories takes place at different times, examining different characters.
I especially loved the tale that introduced Prince Colin to Cynthia. Let's just say it involves rolls, butter, and antlers. Believe me, it is one that you have to read. And then there are several stories in which Burndee, our Reluctant Godfather, takes center stage either through his eyes or the eyes of another character. I won't say he is the most disagreeable fairy godfather known to exist, as I haven't met them all, but he is the most unique disagreeable fairy godfather I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. But beneath that gruff personality beats a heart of pure gold (fairy godfathers do have hearts, right?).
I loved all these short tales and the author's explanatory notes about the story behind the story for each and placing it within the chronology of the tales. And then there is Files, a truly annoying fairy who is the ultimate champion of hypocrisy and double standards. Get ready for a few laughs from his journal entries.
This is a fun book that you don't want to miss. It was an absolute delight to read (and laugh) through. And, of course, you need to read and enjoy the three previous books first to fully appreciate A Flash of Magic.
I was provided a complimentary digital ARC (pre-release copy) of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
– this is part of a series and is best read after the other books
– this is a collection of stories (not interconnected except for in world/characters; each occur at different points in the characters’ history)
– this is told from about 7 different points of view (one point of view per story)
Review:
I loved jumping back into the world of Ambia! It felt like getting reacquainted with old friends and learning new things about them. I loved that comforting feel of the stories and hearing stories from the points of view of other characters that we haven’t heard from in the past. The stories were also quite funny! I loved the humorous moments of each story, whether it was a nonchalant observation or a silly action, it was very entertaining and kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would go awry next!
A Flash of Magic is the fourth book in the Tales of Ambia and is best read after the other three stories as this book takes us on a deeper dive into the minds of characters we’ve met in the other stories and their history’s. Whether it’s listening to Ella tell us of her marriage to Burndee, learning the name of the mischievous fairy messenger from A Royal Masquerade and how he likes to deal with delivering mail, or seeing Prince Colin meet Burndee for the first time as a child, you’re in for a wild ride of fun, enjoyable stories that you’re sure to want to share with your family.
Violence: Mild. Just shenanigan level moments of oops type injuries.
Sexual: Mild, barely there. Just some kisses.
3.5 stars
This is a collection of short stories, a few told in letters, some in journal entries, and the last in regular novel form.
It was fun to see Burndee and Collin again. I could read about Collin for a long time and not be bored. The tone of the series is one that I both like and kind of side-eye. It hovers on the comedic almost slap-stick side a lot of the time, to the point of it being over the top and unbelievable at certain moments. I laugh a lot, but then get a bit tired of the intensity of the slap-stick, almost like it's too much?
That being said, a few words on the stories found within:
Files needs a slap upside the head. (I was grinning with Burndee during the brakes fiasco). I actually felt bad for Burndee and his new godchild. The magistrate's story was one of my top two stories in the collection. Guy is a hoot. Loved the call out on the toxic original fairy tale of the 12 swans (or 6 swans depending on the version). Collin's cousin (name escapes me) is such a sweet buffoon I can't help but like him and want him to show up more. Mini Collin and teen Burndee had all my snickers. Poppy and Burndee need to team up more. That showcased dual enabling at its finest. Hehehe.
Overall, I thought A Flash of Magic was hilarious, enjoyable, and familiar in a warm but comical way. I loved seeing the various personalities of side characters pop out of the page.
I'll admit some of the shorter letter-style stories the book began with (mostly the first one) did not grab my attention as much as the latter ones, but I still liked getting the perspective of those characters (such as Ella).
I'd say "A Letter from Magistrate Valyns" and "A Tale of New Year's Eve", were my favorites, closely followed by "A Letter From Cynthia de Ghent" and "An Excerpt From The Journal of Prince Colin." Those ones in particular sure took you for a wild, hilarious ride.
A Flash of Magic is just one of those books that feels like sitting by a warm fire or snuggling up in a blanket. The magic is never dark, although there are those who use power (including magic) wrongly and are brought to justice. It's sparkling with little threads of genius and wit and magic, and full of characters you'll never forget.
*** I received an advanced reader review copy of A Flash of Magic but was not obligated to give a positive review. Thus, these are my honest thoughts on the book!!
I had the genuine pleasure of reading each of these eight short stories as they were being released on Patreon and I thoroughly enjoyed every one! It is highly recommended that you at least read the first two books in the Tales of Ambia series before reading this anthology, as it will keep you from spoilers and will greatly heighten your enjoyment to know the background of the characters spotlighted here. My favorite story in the anthology was Prince Colin's Journal Excerpt followed very closely behind by the holiday story! I won't spoil, but they were both touching and hilarious! You get to see sides of beloved characters that you hadn't seen before and it was absolutely delightful...and occasionally a little heartbreaking, but in the very best of ways. I loved every moment!
Awww, I don’t know how to properly rate this. I will say I enjoyed every story in here. Content wise it was very clean, expect Cinderella style magic. Who’s my favorite character?? How dare you ask! But probably Burndee, Ella, and Poppy are my top three in no particular order. Colin, Horace, and Valyns rank equally second. Like in the other books, Colin rides the line of cortonheaded ninnymuggin at time, but he was ok in this book. Ella was sweet and an absolute darling. I honestly love Pippy. She’s so fun and preppy. Burndee honestly steals the show. The best word to describe him is cantankerous…along with sarcastic. I would love to be his friend as well as the entire cast’s friend
Fun and funny! My favorites were the letters by Ella and Cynthia and the New Year short story. This is a collection of short stories for readers who like colorful characters and crazy shenanigans.
Revisiting Ambia, reading about Burndee and the gang again, and meeting new characters in Allison's latest Tales of Ambia book was SUCH a treat!! Really looking forward to more!
