Dead Detective #2

Deadbeat Dad

Rate this book
Hard-boiled police detective Richelle Dadd is back. And in a whole world of fresh trouble. Still... well, dead as the result of a Gypsy curse, she must now face life as a single mom. Not only does Richelle have to worry about all the usual stuff—her baby’s health and well-being and keeping a roof over their heads by working a precarious dead-end job—there’s also her homicidal ex-boyfriend to fear, the father of her child, stalking them both day and night with the avowed intent of kidnapping baby Tamara.

Not to mention a mysterious Russian agent hell-bent on “recruiting” Richelle into a suspiciously perfect overseas job, plus there’s a vicious Ripper-style killing to investigate, one that ties in with the Black Rose Murders that terrorized the city nearly ninety years ago. Throw in the increasingly bizarre behavior of Richelle’s ex-husband Devon and the fact that somebody’s bugged every inch of Richelle’s house—and it all adds up to a recipe for disaster…

But once again, just as in the Dead Detective, the first book in the series, some very off-beat characters come to her aid. There’s her love-sick ex-detective partner Malena Ayon, for one, and the long-dead ghost cop Bull McGuinness for another. And Richelle’s equally dead new boyfriend, a dreamy World War I vet cut down in the prime of his youth. Last but hardly least, the roguish old Irish Traveler and scam artist Dicky Dadd, who claims to be Richelle’s vanished father, but who may be something else entirely; a half-Gypsy wizard sent to watch over her by the kriss, or Romani High Council.

On the eve of a second ‘Ripper’ murder at a nearby theme park, Richelle and Malena must race to save an innocent victim’s life—along with that of Tamara—while battling shadowy forces both real and supernatural, as the story builds to a shattering and unexpected climax.

I liked this one better than book 1. Richelle is dealing with her undead state and its repercussions. While tough, her personality is softening which makes her more relatable. I'm still confused a little about the Romany/Gypsy lore stuff - we find out little bits in each book. IMHO this is not the best approach as the reader is kept wondering "how is this possible". However, if you are going to keep reading, you are suspending some disbelief as Richelle is pulling off still being a cop while also being a zombie.

It took me a while to read this one because of family visits, etc. So it wasn't the book's fault. I may read the next one - but this one kind of provided the closure I needed about the father of Richelle's baby.

Thanks to a gypsy curse placed on her by her homicidal ex boyfriend Val Tabori, hard boiled Police Detective Richelle Dadd is undead, stuck between the realm of the living and the dead. Tabori had intended to father a ‘moroi’ (a kind of undead vampire-like creature born of the union between a human and muli). Instead of the son he had hoped for, Richelle has recently given birth to a baby girl, Tamara. Terrified that Tabori will return to claim her daughter for his own nefarious ends, Richie has been on high alert ever since.

While juggling motherhood, Richelle has been given a dead end job in filing, research and cold cases. While researching one such case, Richie connects with a spirit attached to one of the boxes, Sophie Grey who was one of the three Black Rose murder victims in 1931. Wanting to
help Sophie find some measure of peace, Richie starts to look into other cases with similar traits.

Meanwhile, along with a houseful of visiting ghosts from Shadytown, Richie has her roguish old Irish Traveler/scam artist father, Dicky Dadd, staying with her as well as her partner Malena Ayon, who seems to be keeping a secret of her own. In addition, her mother keeps trying to link her up with a visiting cousin from Russia, whose duplicity is giving Richie cause for concern. As if life wasn’t hectic enough, Jennifer keeps calling her up over Devon’s bizarre behaviour.

Richie’s investigation into the Black Rose Murders leads to the shocking discovery of other ritualistic murders committed over the years as well as recent victim. Before long, Richie finds herself battling shadowy forces both real and supernatural resulting in a earth shattering and explosive climax.

Deadbeat Dad sees the welcome return of Police Detective Richelle Dadd in this second instalment of the Dead Detective series. Richie is now juggling motherhood and a dead end job as she tries to piece together the grisly murders that have the same bearings as the unsolved ritualistic Black Rose murders committed 90 years before. Thankfully she still has Bull McGuinness on hand to help as well as her ghostly boyfriend, Wiley, a World War 1 veteran, who was killed in the prime of his youth.

Richie’s father was a welcome addition to the series making it apparent from the start that there was more to him than meets the eye. Baby Tamara was a delight and there were some laugh out loud moments with her partner Malena, whose presence was sorely needed when things threatened to become too dark.

With her house seemingly bugged, a Russian agent bent on recruiting her for some suspicious job overseas as well as the threat of Val re-emerging at any moment, Richie needed all the help she can get.

Happily most of the loose ends from the first book were tied up in this instalment including Riche’s deadbeat ex boyfriend Devon. There’s still lots of potential for the series to continue and I hope the authors return to it at some point. Ideal for fans of paranormal mysteries, noir police detective dramas, zombies, ghosts, gypsie curses, the occult, organised crime.

I listened to this book in audible form which was narrated by Ilyana Kadushin. I was impressed by the way she was masterfully able to bring each character to life with their own unique voice, switching effortlessly between characters and accents.

A-mazing!! After reading The Dead Detective I had no doubt that this book was going to be equally good. But my expectations were surpassed by alot. There was so much mystery and excitement happening through out the whole book that there was never a dull moment in the story. I really hope they keep this story going because I just can't get enough of these characters.

Bull McGinnis and “The Gimp” continue to help Detective Sargeant Richelle Dadd discover who and/or what was behind the Gypsy curse that is turning police officers into undead officer ghosts, who are being used to eliminate the undead Gypsy gang’s competition. Richelle’s background is expanded by her husband and parents entering the scene, reincarnated souls, and ghosts that cannot die (again). These characters added much interest to the tale. Richelle, her detective partner, and her undead crew continue to investigate several undead incidents, including the undead Gypsy gang from book one. Most consuming is a recurring triple murder case that has been happening every few years since 1931. Foremost in her mind, is who put the hole in her heart.

Fun read. Sometimes I think they use the old ghosts as an excuse to be as politically incorrect as possible.

Deadbeat Dad: A Dead Detective Novel book 2 by J.R. Rain and Rod Kierkegaard Jr. is the second book in the series but can be read as a stand alone. I didn't read the first book and was not lost but I know I am going to read the first one now! This book has Richelle, a 1/2 dead, 1/2 alive detective, full time mother to the same type of baby, due to a curse, dealing with a supernatural crazy killer that is also stalking her and her baby, ghosts in her life, a man that claims to be her dad that shows up, a habitual liar mother, an ex-husband that goes off the deep end of nutzville and his new wife, trying to tell her partner she is really not alive anymore, and her horrible job in the cold case dungeon. But she has her ghost boyfriend and her friends, alive and dead to help out. It is exciting and a fun read. I received this book from NetGalley for a honest review and it in no way effected my rating or review content.

How did I feel about this one? Honestly...I don't quite know. I know that sounds strange, but I'm torn on my feelings for this novel and don't know if it's one I would suggest for others to read.

Let me start by stating the obvious. This novel is a sequel and, like the doofus I am, I didn't realize it until I had the book. It says right on the cover that it's the second book in a series and I still managed to miss the hint. Despite this, I still decided to read it. I won't judge any of my feelings towards the novel in terms of my confusion because those complaints most likely would have been answered in the first novel.

With that out of the way, let me explain both the good and bad aspects of this book. For one thing, I loved the general idea behind it. It was unique. The lead character was partially dead and could communicate with ghosts, which I found fascinating. I loved the fact that her baby daughter had this ability as well. Her constant conversations with these spirits and how she had to hide them from the living to avoid making herself look crazy amused me. The fact that she had to be careful while sleeping and being intimate with her deceased boyfriend to make sure she didn't fully descend into the spirit world were things I found interesting, too. The rules within the novel were creative. Most of the characters, while not particularly amazing or interesting, were likable enough for me to want to keep reading as well.

Now for the things I didn't quite like. I thought the writing style was pretty cool with the constant breaking of the fourth wall and conversations with the reader. While I did like this, it had moments that were, for lack of a better description, kind of cheesy and lame. A good example would be at the end. A small spoiler here, but it involved a character being shot. When the lead shot said character multiple times, she goofily said "Oops, I did it again!" and referenced the song by Britney Spears. While out-of-nowhere silly moments like that can happen in novels, the worst time for authors to do them is (in my opinion) during the climax where extremely tense or important things are happening. Breaking that tension to make a Britney Spears joke is just cringe-worthy. This isn't the only time these moments happen in the novel. If it happened once or twice, I'd be more forgiving, but that wasn't the case here. Moments like that happened at least once a chapter and weren't needed.

Another thing I didn't enjoy were the awkward breaks within the relationships between characters. A good example here involved the relationship between the two lead female cops. I loved their friendship and appreciated the moments they shared in the novel. What I didn't like, though, were the moments that the friendship fell off the rails at important moments. Another small spoiler here, but a great example is when one of the women breaks up with her boyfriend and, instead of focusing on the main task at hand involving the undercover work they're doing at a Renaissance fair, she complains about the breakup. I understand how the end of a relationship can hurt, but can't you wait until after this major moment in your career to whine about it? The author made some odd choices with how the characters interacted and how their relationships worked.

Also, the lead character having the last name "Dad" threw me off something terrible because other characters calling her "Dad" made me think they were giving her one heck of a weird pet name. No stars were subtracted for things like this, though, since it was my fault for starting on book two in a series. These oddities were most likely explained in the first novel.

Honestly, if you would want to give this novel a try, I would suggest starting with the first novel. I haven't read that one myself, but I think it would help you enjoy this book so much more. If you decide to mimic me and read this one as a standalone, though, it could still work. I just found it to be simple and average.

Romani, ghosts, zombies of a sort, police work, awful parents, magic, gangsters, Russian spies, renaissance faire, pedophilia, exes and more, all in one book. Way too much so no one thread is developed enough. The pedophilia story line just ends, no complete explanation as to what was going on there, no investigation to sort it out and no explanation at all to explain why two of the characters ultimately did what they did at the motel.

The main characters were mildly engaging, but some of their actions were off the wall, one even said it about the other. One line about forgiving someone in authority enabling a pedophile was an adult thing to do really struck a wrong nerve with me. WTF?!? Maybe this was addressed more in the first book which I hadn't read, but even so, it could have been left out, it served no purpose except to be distasteful.

Cool story!!!

Just the title of this series catches the eye and makes me think about how can someone work as a detective and also be dead? So reading the first book introduces us to a woman who can't figure it out either. So, we the reader learn the new ways of a zombie in this new series where not much of it makes sense but Ms. Richie tends to live on and even becomes pregnant and delivers a baby girl. This in itself is a bit of a miracle and she continues to work as cop, even begins to realise how special she and the baby are and that others want to kidnap them. And so the story goes. I'm really happy to find out there will be a third book and look forward to it.The only problem I have with this series is all the mistakes like words missing or added or in the wrong order. So thanks Mr Rain and Mr Kierkegaard.

Audible version. A really fun series which I hope will continue. Some threads are resolved from the first book. Val, the baby daddy, has to be dealt with. There is a strange Russian woman who wants to get her hands on Richelle. Malena, Richelle's ex partner figures in more prominently. Dickey Dadd who may or may not be dad is a grifter who is couch surfing in Richelle's basement. Devon's arc definitely gets resolved. And baby Tamara is alive (sort of) and kicking and is never out of Richelle's sight, even at work. I don't think I laughed as much at this one but the plot really moved along and there was a lot of action along with the police work.

It just keeps getting weirder

I normally hate stories about zombies, but this series is different. The zombies in this series aren't stomping around, in a daze, eating victims' brains. They're more life like. The authors of this series are as imaginative as any that I've ever read and I have been reading a long time. If you like to read books with action, thrills, weirdness, and interesting characters, them this might be a series for you.

Great book

I really like the main character. She is funny with a touch of sarcasm. She takes after her dad who is not really a dead beat. I wish this would become another series like Samantha Moon.

I didn't think I would read another zombie book. I guess when magic is involved, it a whole new story. I'd love to get an update on this group. Especially to see if her daughter develops powers

Deadbeat Dad sounded like an interesting read, even though I’m not really into the whole zombie culture. I don’t mind watching it, but I’m not as fond of reading it. However, this book sounded interesting to so I went for it. Little did I know the protagonist is a different sort of zombie, not one who ate brains for sustenance: she was cursed by her ex-boyfriend with help from his Gypsy girlfriend to become the undead. I was hooked from then on. Quickly, I was drawn in by the fascinating characters, from her “dad” to her ghost friends, who help her in her quests to track down cold cases, or hot ones, depending on which case she is working on. And her baby Tamara was a joy all on her own, especially considering where she came from. There was lively action and an interesting plot. At times the book did seem a little too removed from the action, which made me not feel as close to it as I would have liked, and sometimes the book seemed a little slow, but it was only a few times. And, not reading the first one in the series also wasn’t a big deal. In point of fact, I really want to read the first one to find out how all the things in her life came to be. So, don’t hesitate to pick up this book whether it’s your first by them, or the second. Oh, and their other books are just as fun. Recommend!

Richelle Dadd is back in Deadbeat Dad. I really enjoy this series. Okay, I don’t typically like zombie and ghost books, but there’s something about the way this series is done that hooked me. It probably has a lot to with the fact that Detective Dadd reminds me a lot of JR Rain’s other famous book character, Samantha Moon. She’s a feisty superhero taking on the bad boys of crime, yet she’s got to deal with the real world and does it with the ability to throw in wit and sarcasm.

In this second book, Richelle is dealing with a dead end job in the cold case division, taking care of her infant daughter while worrying about her little one’s health, all the while watching out for people chasing her and a zombie ex trying to kidnap her little one. Oh, and the most interesting cast of ghosts coming and going that you could ever imagine! Never a dull moment for the Dead Detective. If you like your supernatural books with some smart, snappy dialogue and a great ongoing story, this is a series for you. Wonderful imaginative story and thrilling mystery too. Not much more you could wish for in a book. Be sure to read the first one though, as you’ll want to get all the background before digging into this second in the series.

Deadbeat Dad is the second book in this paranormal series and I recommend reading the first book before you start this to really appreciate the storyline. Detective Sergeant Richelle Dadd is undead, stuck between the realms of the living and the dead. Deliberately created this way by an ex-boyfriend Val Tabori, who brought her back from the dead to father a Moroi child, a half human, half zombie boy.

However Richelle recently gave birth to a girl which she named Tamara. In this book, Richelle is given a dead end job in filing, researching cold cases. Here she is approached by a ghost, Sophie Grey, who was murdered on Cemetery Hill in 1931. Research shows that Sophie was one of the triple Black Rose murder case.

At home Richelle's life is complex, she has Dicky Dadd her gypsy father staying with her, her ex-police partner Mal moves in and she has a house full of visiting ghosts from Shadytown. Plus her mother tries to link Richelle up with a long lost Russian cousin.

This is a fast paced book with several minor storylines all adding to the tensions, which come to a head when more than one person wants baby Tamara. The ending has the potential to lead to more books in this series.

Very disappointed in this book. Dead Detective was so fun and action filled. This one focused on a story that ran just parallel to all the action. The main characters work a murder that is only tangentially related to the main conflict. Most of the book is devoted to Richelle 's new father, her partner's baffling affair with the captain (which figured into the plot nowhere and I am still mystified by) and a mysterious woman who may be KGB but shows up once and then exists as ignored voice mails until the final showdown.

The rule of "show don't tell" is thrown out the window. It felt like the authors got tired of the story they had been writing and just came up with a strange hodgepodge ending to tie up everything they felt had been left hanging from the first book.

Loved it!

This is better than the first Dead Detective. The characters evolve more as well as the writing. Such a weird premise..a semi dead detective with a semi dead baby. Whoa, and not to be forgotten ghosts, gypsies, and the other cops. When is the next book coming out?
