Since she was fifteen years old, one man has hovered in the background of Charleston Cold Case Detective Ellie Kline’s life, like a sinister ghost watching from the shadows. She nearly caught him once. Instead, she maimed him. Badly. As a result, Dr. Lawrence Kingsley retreated underground to lick his wounds and transform into a new façade of evil.
Ellie always knew that, sooner or later, the murderous psychiatrist would reappear. That time has come.
When his former assistant goes missing from federal protection, Ellie races to Oregon in a desperate attempt to locate Kingsley before the killer can spill more blood. Will Ellie track him down in time, or will The Master once again declare victory in his game of life and death?

I thought about stopping at book 6 but went on to this one (7). Wish I hadn’t. This is just too many books without the storyline in book 1 brought to an end. It’s not in this book either. There’s a book 8 coming out. The plot is good and well written but I’m bored with it. Time to move on to another author.
No spoilers! I like these characters but this one in the series just read as a play-by-play of action. Where are Ellie's relationships with her family members? The awkward charity events? The weird situation between her, her ex, and the new dude? What is Jillian really like besides just Ellie's best friend who has a dog? And there are a lot of points that are just never touched on again. The books are starting to feel all the same and super formulaic. I'm dropping off this series for now and wouldn't recommend making the investment to a friend. I love her Autumn books, though.
I do like books where the characters carry over, but it is getting old that there is no ending to Ellie's battle with Kingsley. This is book #7 and I've read them all, but I can see that the next one won't end the battle either. And it won't be out for a couple months yet. I hesitate to read any other series of books by this author because I dislike cliffhangers and to be continued books that you have to wait months to read the next one.
I was looking for a new author and found this series and I really got into it but by book 5-6, I just felt like I was reading the same thing. I read book 7 because I wanted to see what happened to the Master/Dr.X finally and guess what? He's still going strong and there's a book 8 about the same thing that was supposed to be out in February but its March and not out yet. I feel cheated because I don't know what is going to happen to the murderer. I wish you would have killed off or captured the murdered around book 5 or even the end of the 6th and then moved on to different cases with different killers. I don't know maybe I'm wrong but I thought this series was about the cop but I feel like it turned out to be more about the killer not the cop and her cases.
I've read every book in the series and I just can't read any more. Another non-ending? The bad guy just keeps on killing, so many fragments of stories and no conclusion. I know real crimes aren't all wrapped up in an hour long TV show but seven books should be long enough. Torture, gore and sickness are all key factors in this series. What isn't a factor is complete storytelling. If you want to waste some time, read these. If you want a good psychological thriller, keep on looking.
Mary did it again. Absolutely awesome book. You don’t want to put the book down. I highly recommend you read the whole series. You will not be disappointed. I can’t wait for the next book.
I love this series. Reading each novel is like a continuation of the previous book. The characters continue to develop and it is so easy to follow along with their relationships as well as the plot. With Cold Revenge, Ellie receives a panicked call from Gabe. Gabe has been contacted by Lawrence Kingsley. How Kingsley found him is part of the mystery because Gabe is in WITSEC. At the same time, Fortis assigns another cold case to Ellie and Clay, Ellie's boyfriend, is heading up a new task force. That purpose is to find Kingsley. There is a lot happening in Cold Revenge. Mary Stone and Donna Berdel cleverly lead the reader through the clues and events and manage to tie everything in together. I love that Ellie and Jillian are strong women characters who maintain their femininity and that Jacob and Clay are intelligent enough men to not treat them as weak women. This book will not end the series but you will be anxious for the next one. Edit Delete Comment Permalink
I have read all the books so far in series. I really was not happy with this last book as it didn’t really have much to story line just retelling entire story. Also it left you wondering about them just leaving the scene of a burning car with body in it also the death of a mother and her two children. It builds up a story and just left you hanging.
There was way more fluff in this book. All her books had too much needless conversation! But this one was way over the top. The series should have ended in this book. Due to the amount of trying to extend for another book has made me decide not read next book.
Seven books and no closer to solving the case? I’m pretty much over it (it’s Winter Black all over again) I want to like these, but it’s just dragging on and on (after awhile it seems more & more about Kingsley & his torture methods than Ellie & a new case)
While I'm very interested in continuing this series it feels like it dragging on a bit too long and lately no happy endings or justice served. I'm ready for the ending.
COLD REVENGE, the seventh book in the Ellie Kline Cold Case series by Mary Stone and Donna Berdel, is another intense, suspenseful, spine chilling thriller. The authors Mary Stone and Donna Berdel are amazing and always manage to capture your attention in the first few pages. As usual, I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't put this book down. The interaction between characters is intense making this a true nail-biting, page turner.
Dr. Kingsley has been haunting and hurting Ellie Kline and those she loves since she was fifteen years old. They thought he crawled off and hopefully died following their last encounter, but he has returned. Gabe, Dr. Kingsley's assistant, is in Witness Protection when he receives a package and is positive he recognizes Kingsley's handwriting.
Ellie gets on the Kingsley Task Force with Clay Lockwood and they hard at work to protect Gabe and catch Kingsley, this time for sure.
The ending is another cliffhanger leaving you on pins and needles waiting to find out what comes next in the Cold Case series.
If you haven't read the "Cold Case" series by Mary Stone and Donna Berdel I suggest you check it out
SMALL SPOILER (FOUND IN THE SUMMARY OF THE BOOK SO NOT BIG) I have read the series and so far I have enjoyed getting to know Ellie and her friends as well as her pursuit of the serial killer that has plagued her since she was young. That being said, I just finished the SEVENTH book and *SPOILER* She still hasn't caught him yet. I have read a few books where the killer is illusive for a few to many books, but there is always another case that holds your interest. In this one, all of the cases relate to this relentless (and getting old) pursuit. Not only am I sick of hearing about how great Kingsley is (from himself of course), but his murders and tortures get more gruesome and gory with every book (FOR REAL) and I am kind of tired of having to read about them. I am starting on book #8 in hopes that it just doesn't continue in the last vein of bad guy getting gruesome revenge and (gasp) narrowly escaping for his next victim (who by the way we usually know who it is in advance so no surprise there). I know I sound super salty about this but I am continuing to read because I really like her writing style and I have a fondness for the protagonists. And to be honest - I'm already 7 books invested. Please don't let me down Mary Stone!
When Dr Kinsley disappeared following his attempted retribution on Detective Ellie Kline, his empire seemed to collapse. Gabe had turned on his mentor, shooting him and saving the lives of Jillian and Ellie. Escaping, Katrina quickly made her attempt to grab power. After assisting Kinsley in his escape out of the country, Katarina was able to establish herself as a valuable FBI informant. With Gabe and Katrina safely tucked in WitSec, Ellie and FBI Agent Clay Lockhart begin to form a special task force against the traffickers.
After changing his identity, Kingsley returns for a much needed woodland rest. However, His thirst for revenge is overwhelming as he plots the taken of the "traitors " and his nemesis, Detective Ellie King.
Possibly aided by inside information and with trusted spies, Kingsley easily undermines the Witness Protection program. With Gabe, a prisoner and Katrina in Kingsley's sights, Clay and Ellie are at a loss.
Will the carnage ever end? Or is Ellis destined to look over her shoulder forever? And what terrible secret is Clay hiding?
If you're wanting something that thrills & chills you, Cold Revenge really delivers!
Playing cat and mouse with the diabolical Kingsley/del Rey, who is ready to re-emgerge post-plastic reconstruction, has Detective Ellie Kline on edge once again. The faithful-turned-traitors now in WITSEC, are FAR from safe, and Ellie needs her closest friends to help try and save someone in the crosshairs. Kingsley has a new minion to assist him, whose character is slowly revealing a match made in hell... and he's definitely ready to play the devious doctor's insidious games. The twists, creepiness, and adrenaline-rushes will keep you flipping pages faster & faster, making you binge-read all night like me! Not necessarily a cliff-hanger ending, but it's definitely set up for an epic book 8! An ARC was provided by the author, publisher, or promotional service, and I have chosen to post an honest, fair review.
The Ellie Kline series is one of my favorites. I love all the series written by Mary Stone and now her co writer Donna Birdel. I'm glad some of the main characters in all these series are strong female leads. It's great to have good role models for our young growing up in our society. This book kept me glued to the pages right up to the end page. The characters are realistic and I'm glad they follow each book in the series. The dialogue flows freely. The editing is clean. These books are not riddled with bad spelling or grammatical er!rors. There are no profanity or inappropriate sexual scenes. I highly recommend these books to anyone from late teens on up. It does have some graphic and sadistic violence to certain characters. For that reason I don't recommend this book to young teens. Can't wait for the new one coming out in February 2021. Reading good books like these saved my sanity during the pandemic of 2020.
Cold Revenge is the 7th book in the Ellie Kline series. Mary Stone and Donna Berdel have written another intense book. It starts out with a mother trying to save her children. I was really hoping for a good outcome since the mother betrayed the FBI to save her children. Abel del Rey aka Kingsley is terrorizing people again. Ellie and Clay are trying to locate Gage since he called Ellie and told her Kingsley found him. Will they find him in time? Katarina is playing house with her daughter and has become bored so she finds another way to release her tension. At one point in the book, it was so intense I had to stop reading for a few minutes. I could feel Gage’s pain and suffering.
Watch out Katarina, Kingsley is coming for you.
You can read this book on its own; however, I recommend you start with the first one so you will know and understand all the characters.
I felt the anxiety, sadness, hope, and joy as Ellie chased after Kingsley and Gabe. I felt her determination and fierceness when she argued agains plea deals, especially as we caught up with Katrina. And the warmth and love were demonstrated through the Christmas scenes and moments.
The writing was superb and the story brought non stop intricate action. There is more than one piece in this game and while part is addressed in the book, there are still multiple threads for the story to address. The new character was captivating, and Kingsleys changes well I felt Gabe’s Reaction was on point! The story brought me to tears and I must say there is a great balance between the horror of the cases and the beauty of the family/friends of this series.
Can’t wait for the next story! I hope we continue to see more changes in a positive direction for Ellie and Clay❤️
This book, number 7 in the series, once again pits Cold Case Det. Ellie Kline against the extremely evil Dr. Kingsley. If you have not read this series I recommend that you start with book one. Mary Stone with Donna Berkeley had me on the edge of my seat. The vile Dr. Kingsley will turn your blood cold. He is after people that have betrayed him and first on his list is Gabe. Gabe is in the Witsec program, however the clever Kingsley finds him. Ellie and the Kingsley task force race to save him. Ellie also manages to solve a cold case which was very interesting. I love this series and the characters of Ellie and her friends. I hate the torturing, murdering Dr. Kingsley. To me that equals great writing. Cannot wait for book 8. Watch out Katarina!!
Mary Stone has hit another one out of the park! This is another action packed thriller featuring Ellie Kline and her friends/co-workers. The group continues to have unwanted encounters with her ex-psychiatrist and kidnapper, Dr. Kingsley, and race to save his latest victims. The novel brings back Gabe and Katrina, both who have worked closely with Kingsley but have since betrayed him and he is out for revenge. Never a dull moment! I immensely enjoy Ellie's character, especially how she thinks and how she still cares about people even though she has every reason to have a hardened heart. This book can be read as a standalone but is a nice continuation in the unfolding tale of Ellie and her cohorts in solving crimes. I received this novel as an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Where is Gabe? After getting a message from Kingsley, Gabe flees from his Oregon safe house. After a panic-stricken call to Ellie he disappears. The soonest Ellie and Clay can get there is the next morning and by then Gabe is nowhere to be found! Does Kingsley have him and is he still alive? After finding Kingsley' s new play house; with help from Katerina, they arrive minitues after he and his new assistant flee with Gabe in tow! And what's up with Katerina, has she gone back to her old line of work when Bethany (Harmony) is in school? What is she thinking? Find the answers in this excellent book. Highly recommended.
In "Cold Revenge", Book 7 of the Ellie Kline series, authors Mary Stone and Dona Berdel continue with amazing twists and turns as Det. Ellie Kline of the Charleston P.D. and FBI Agent Clay Lockwood team up again to find and try to apprehend Dr. Lawrence Kingsley before he can set up his grisly games again. Knowing that she and possible family and friends will be targeted by the good Doctor, will they succeed? When a former employee of his who is in the witness protection program goes missing, the question is asked if Dr. Kingsley responsible for his disappearance? Read on to follow the above twists and turns to find out what happened. Enjoy/
Dr. Kingsley has gotten more bitter. His cruelty and brutality has no bounds. This chilling psychological thriller will keep you up at night. You lose some characters and you begin to care for characters you have hated. This is the sign of great storyline. These books mess with your emotions and you are there and not just reading the words but experiencing the story. A great read for heart pounding and action packed twisting and turning. Received ARC copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
Ellie Kline, CPD Detective and Clay Lockwood, FBI Special Agent back on the hunt
Ellie Kline, Charlotte PD Detective has been closing cold cases faster than anyone expected and it keeps bringing new cases to the front of the Special task Force the FBI has put together. Clay Lockwood is the Agent in charge of all the leads she brings and then he does his best to keep her alive when the past and present keep clashing. Ellie watches as her friends get drawn in and damaged, some beyond repair!
Some of the characters in "Cold Receive" are some of the most horrible characters to ever exist in books! At the end of every book, you think that the horrors perpetrated against the innocents have sure!y reached a pinnacle. Nope, the horrors in the next book go above and beyond the previous book. It almost makes you a little afraid to read the next book in the series. Like driving by a traffic accident, you almost have to slow down to take a look, I just have to read the next installment!
Dr Lawrence Kingsley has been in the background of Ellie Kline's life since she was 15 and he had her kidnapped. Now a detective working cold cases, Ellie nearly caught the sadistic serial killer once. Instead, he was severely severely wounded and went underground returning with a new face of evil bent on revenge. When a man who was once Kingsley's assistant goes missing from Witness Protection, Ellie is on the case. Can she catch the man this time?
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review freely given. I have enjoyed this series and this book is no exception. Full of action and intrigue, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. It'll pull you into the world of Ellie Kline and keep you guessing. The book's well-written and the characters, both those you like and those you don't, are well-rounded. I'm looking forward to the next book. I highly recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order for the most benefit.
