MASSIVE SPOILERS BELOW.

This story is a masterpiece. Watching the protagonist turn into the greatest antagonist. There is no self-righteousness in Eren, just deep trauma and damage from his time as a child to his days in the Survey Corps. We watch his rise to power as a savior of humanity vowing to see the world outside the walls of Paradis and free his comrades from the terror of Titans, all the way to his downfall; becoming the greatest threat to humanity outside the walls. The readers go from cheering him and his comrades on, to having mixed feelings towards Erens' motives and "end plan."

Eren as a character is not a 1 dimensional character as some would like to argue in the earlier volumes but you begin to see the trauma brought forth from the tragedies around him, to the betrayal of those close to him, and the betrayal of him to himself. He lost countless lives because of his inability to make the "right" decisions during certain situations. This has caused him to feel a deep hatred for himself with his inability to protect the ones around him. Eren is trapped within his own cycle of hatred towards himself and hatred towards the responsibility of being the one to make the "hard decision." He hides this in the explanation of "being free," but really he is not free and never was. He weeps because he was able to see the future and the destruction he would cause, he weeps because of the children that he saved only for them be killed by The Rumbling of his own doing. He apologizes to them and continues on with his plan, this is not a free man. Eren is a man who is trapped by his fathers ideals and choices. He is a slave, just like Ymir was. As both slaves set forth the destruction of the world, it is up to the people who enabled Eren to stop him. After all, in saving Eren along his journey to "freedom," they in part caused this ultimate destruction.

No one is good or evil. Everyone is merely a slave to a concept of human imagination.

I can't believe this is the last volume. 😭
the end of a masterpiece. (debatable, but whatever, still a masterpiece)

It was a very, very wild ride with an amazing story and loveable, badass characters.

Thank you, Isayama, for this crazy journey! Thank you, you freaking madman! ♥

Attack on Titan was one of the wildest and most extraordinary reading experiences of my life. Hajime Isayama created a masterpiece that I will never be able to forget. If you saw my updates, you probably know that I devoured the whole manga in the span of four days. I could not stop reading. It’s sad that it took the author almost twelve years to write this and I read it in less than a week, but I'm glad I decided to pick up the manga now—I have already watched the anime four years ago—as I don't know if I could have survived waiting for chapters when almost every one ends on a cliffhanger.

I know the ending is quite controversial, not everyone is a fan of it, but I personally liked it. It wasn't exactly how I wanted this manga to end—I’m a hopeless romantic and I love eremika—but the message that Isayama showed with it was strong. Unfortunately, I don't think we humans will ever learn from it.

Now that I've finished this story, I can finally move on to my favorites in it. So let's start with the characters—in no particular order,

╴Mikasa Ackerman, I love her, I love her, I love her,
╴Hange Zoë, how can you not like this crazy woman?
╴Levi Ackerman, do I have to explain myself?
╴Erwin Smith, just- no comment, I don’t want to think about it,
╴Armin Arlert, I just love this blondie,
╴Eren Jaeger, honorable mention, because he with long-ish hair is my exact type of man

My favorite volumes,
╴Attack on Titan, Vol.8
╴Attack on Titan, Vol.16
╴Attack on Titan, Vol.20
╴Attack on Titan, Vol.33
╴Attack on Titan, Vol.34

Anyway, as I said, one of the best stories I have ever read in my life. If you haven't read or watched it yet, I highly, highly, highly recommend it!!

Writing this review can only be described as bittersweet. I am at a gigantic loss for words, emotions, and feelings on how deeply connected I feel towards this animanga. Everything from the plot, characters, setting, development, writing, art style, and infinitely more elements are simply tattooed in my soul. Maybe because this was the series that made me first fall in love with anime or maybe because these were the characters that brought me so much comfort alone in my room trying to survive junior year or maybe simply because I love Levi Ackerman more than humanly possible. Attack on Titan opened a whole new lens of storytelling into a media I have never even thought to venture through before. This ending gave me more than I could ask for, but still not enough for me to forgive Isayama for the life of torment we have all received. These (short) past eight months have simply been torture trying to accept that this series even exists and even more torturous now that the end has arrived. I am saddened, torn, broken, and just... not okay. In the simplest way possible: it is unfair how perfect this story is.

EDIT MARCH 2024

In hindsight, I no longer have such strong hatred for the ending anymore. I admit I was carried away by the hate bandwagon back in 2021. Ever since then, I've come to appreciate the story and the journey. I still believe the conclusion is NOT very well-written and it needed more work but my criticisms from before were based on my own misinterpretation of characters and message of the story. Attack on Titan is a very important story for me, I will continue to love it despite not liking the conclusion entirely. This review will still be up as a reminder that one can grow and learn and drastically change their opinions on media over time.

Dear Isayama,

Thank you for writing a story that thematically revolved around freedom, hope, breaking the cycle of hatred and unburdening children from sins of their fathers JUST to throw these themes out the window and end the story with war and utter destruction.

Thank you for including very heavy topics in your story such as war, racism, fascism, genocide, propaganda and handling them from a realistic perspective just for all of it to be solved by Armin’s half-assed talk-no-jutsu ability which, in previous scenes had realistically got him almost killed.

Thank you for writing such complex character like Eren just to assassinate his characterization in the end and make him a hypocrite and a fking simp.

Thank you for writing strong female characters who by the end, either get killed or completely define their lives around men and misogynistic, outdated gender norms. Thanks for making Mikasa a badass just to reduce her to a damsel-in-distress who cannot get over the death of a genocidal maniac. Thanks for making Historia the queen just to make her marry her childhood bully and become a baby making machine for the fascist government. Thanks for dumbing down Hange after the time-skip so that the Yaeger brothers could look cool and then proceed to kill her off in the most terrible way. Thanks for killing Sasha and yeeting Yelena out of the story. And most importantly, thanks for making Ymir suffer thousands of years of abuse in the name of love for a man who saw her nothing more than a slave.

Thank you for condemning fascism and genocide to condoning killing 80% of humanity in the end just so all the annoying fan favorite characters can survive, Reiner can sniff Historia’s letter like a pervert and Levi, Jean, Connie and Armin can play house with people who destroyed their home and killed their comrades and friends without any remorse.

Attack on Titan was always seen as genre-defying for years, it was supposed to be different from generic Shonen manga, it was supposed to set a precedent. All the retconning, poorly written dialogues, plot hole galore and poorly tied loose ends are very unlike your writing and were never seen before in this story ever. Had you just nailed the ending, this series would have been a masterpiece. Ending can make or break a story and this ending truly ruins the entire series. I cannot watch nor read this series knowing all that build-up is going to lead to absolutely no pay-off. Thank you, Isayama for ruining a perfectly good story, hope the money was worth it.

I don’t know how to feel. I’ve been reading this series since I was 14 and I’m finally done. Part of me is upset at the ending but part of me is also satisfied with this volume. I’m going to go cry now because none of my favorite characters survived the series. 🥲

Well fuck. That was disappointing. I can overlook the manga ending because before this, the journey was awesome. I guess i can find cool enjoyable meaning in it, but wow the main character was done wrong. It almost feels like Isayama had amnesia and this is all a part of a fucked up timeline. Actually, i can accept this being part of a bad timeline because at this point, different timelines and parallel universes are cannon. Yeah. That's it. It's not bad writing, this ending is just the result of a single timeline being fucked up. Somewhere, the true ending lies.

First of all, This is a MASTERPIECE!!!
The way Eren grows from a naive little boy to the Antagonist mass murderer is mind-blowing.
Eren said “If someone is willing to take my freedom, I won't hesitate to take theirs.”
Kenny Ackerman said "Everyone had to be drunk on somethin’ to keep pushing on… Everyone was a slave to somethin’."
Meaning Nobody is free.
I see why people were somehow disappointed with the last chapter, but Isayama is not new to shocking his readers, is he?
Mikasa turned out to be the main character, a really wild turn of events.

Chapter 139 is the shittiest chapter of the series.
One chapter ruined whole series and it had to be final chapter.

Annie lives without getting punished for crimes she committed against unarmed nation. Her father is alive whereas Erens mother was eaten alive.

Reiner is still sane even after killing so many innocent people of Paradis who didn't know of humanity beyond walls.
No one is talking about how he killed Marco in early chapters

It makes me angry to see Jean boy getting chummy and having fun with Reiner (who killed his best friend Marco, the reason he joined Survey Corps

Eren dying while rest of his marleyans "friends" surviving is huge disappointment

To see Reiner,Annie,Pieck become ambassador of peace to Paradis is so infuriating and cringy. These were the same people who brought war on shores of Paradis.Talk about contradictory moves. At this point I really feel Erwin should have inherited Collosal Titans

Gabi and other marleyans not dying is disappointment(i know 80 percent population died but the criminals are still alive)
How do you explain titans returning back to human form?
This looks like typical shonen manga ending not seinen manga ending

Real world is not like this wake Isayama

I read last chapter to get sad not to get angry.

This has been a series with continuous ultrahigh stakes, deep mysteries and above all characters with traumatic backstories trying to find a place in the world, and shaping the world simultaneously. The ending is fitting and enticing
You know that to live means to one day die, don’t you?

Overall I enjoyed this series, from an initial rocky start, with overly zealous prepubescent kids transforming into characters I genuinely felt attachment towards. The whole cast is great, and I loved Levi, Hange, Mikasa, Sasha, Reiner even in all his complexities and many, many more. The world building in general keeps you on your toes to discover more, and let’s you into secrets as the main characters learn more. The whole main plot feels rather reminiscent to Code Geass, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and Neon Genesis Evangelion, but still this series asks dark and deep questions on if, and how, cycles of violence can be broken, trauma be overcome, when the will to power is justified and what it means to be human.

Loved the end panels, that imply so much about humans, without using any words.

This ain't it, chief.

The amount of times I laughed in the final chapter (WHAT EVEN WAS THAT CHAPTER BTW) when I'm sure I wasn't supposed to laugh, tho.
Speaking of the final chapter, (I repeat) WHAT EVEN. It read like some weird, bad fanfiction and I was incredulous through more than half of it and the whole of the Armin/Eren conversation. During the rest I didn't really even care anymore.

On the bright side, I'm happy no romantic pairings happened. I was expecting more with Armin and Annie (I actually think they are cute) but I didn't feel the need for more, you get me?
And best of all, Levi is alive. I thought he'd die and I'd have been okay with that too except it probably wouldn't have been done as well as he'd deserve so it's good he didn't. Fortunately, he stayed true to his character the whole series. I did consider giving a second star for that because he's my favorite. I won't because that wouldn't reflect the majority of my feelings regarding...everything else. So...maybe 1.5? Goodreads let me give half stars alreadyyyyy. *Nazgul shriek*

In the end, I just....aghhhh. I'm both confuzzled and a bit dejected. I'll admit I didn't have high expectations at all (the bar has been low for a while, tbh), yet I was disappointed all the same. I still have love for certain characters and I guess I hoped it'd turn out to be slightly better than it seemed like it would.
Oh well.
I'm tired so I have nothing else to say currently.
Except that I created a 1 star tag and "worst finale" tag just for this volume. Yay. :)

Well, this was disappointing. I fucking hated it. The only good thing is that Levi is still alive.
This manga went downhill ever since the time jump and the whole seeing the past/future thing.

Eren character is completely ruined and turn into a martyr who sacrifice everything for his friends. I refuse to believe that he would have wanted to kill his mother because this was fate or predestinate crap. I was hoping he would have been controlled by the Founding titan or something but there are no explanations on why he committed genocide. And Armin thanking him for “turning himself into a mass murder for their sake” was a joke.

I never felt that the relationship between Mikasa & Eren was a romantic one, this was never developed and came out of nowhere. I do think Mikasa had feeling for him, but this was never shown from Eren side.

Reiner & Annie are now all chummy with the others like everything they ever did is forgiven? Nope, this doesn’t work for me.

The side story with Historia and the baby was useless.

The whole titan curse explains by Ymir having Stockholm syndrome and being in love with her abuser was just plain weird.

I am just pissed at the ending and I will go right now try to find some fix-it fanfiction to ease my frustration.

A quick addendum about the "extra pages" I read when they came out some time ago but forgot to add here.

(Red Swan and Name of Love really hit differently post-ocean and even more with the last few chapters, been listening to them on repeat ugly crying and I’m in physical pain)

Also, beware of spoilers. I’ve tried tagging some stuff. But some might be untagged. It’s the last volume in the manga. Avoiding spoilers is impossible and if you get spoiled from reading a review on the last part in the series, that’s on you, not me.

I can’t believe this journey is finally over. Since May 2016 I’ve been a massive fan, obsessively so. I mean it is dark AF. And gory. And fucked-up. You know I like all that shit. Back when I first started watching season 1 of the anime, I had no real idea what to expect. Mostly just all fun and games gory monster slaying with some tension and drama. Like yeah people gonna die but that’s how it goes. Like it was so much darker than I expected. And it’s so much more than just gory monster slaying. Let’s just say I was hooked from the beginning. And as the series progressed it evolved and added so much intrigue about politics, humanity, human morals, racism, oppression and war.

While this manga in whole been so fucking great, it has had it tops and bottoms. I’m only going to talk about my likes and dislikes about the end of the manga. It’s been five years; I’m not going to remember everything. If I ever reread the whole manga, I might come back and update this review.

In previous reviews, I’ve been torn about my feelings about post-ocean. I frankly didn’t like the idea of a “modern” world on the other side of the ocean. To quote Eren . That was basically me when they found Grisha’s journal in the basement. And it felt too late in the series introducing such a big expansion of both world and new characters. It’s also a quite bit tonal shift between pre-ocean and post-ocean that they almost feel like two different mangas, or at least two different series set in the same world. I also feel that post-ocean wasn’t getting enough chapters to be fully explored, being just below 50 chapters while everything that led up to the ocean was 90 chapters.

There was so much new information and so many new characters introduced it was difficult to keep everything apart when I read the manga a chapter a month (it got easier when I did the reread and watched s4p1 of the anime). Because there’s so much new stuff on such short time, nothing gets deeply explored and I felt distanced to the characters. I hate that there was a three-year gap between pre- and post-ocean. What happened with our old cast is told in flashbacks where we see them making contacts with the other side of the ocean and getting modernized. It was too much for Isayama to handle, in my opinion. The conflict grew too big for him to solve which led to a rushed ending with many untied knots.

A lot of stuff iffed me a little. . Parts of the ending I had expected would happen. It’s not a terrible ending (I’ve seen so much trashy hate towards it and ???? Yeah, it was certain stuff I didn’t like, and some stuff could have been more drawn out for details, like just a few more chapters would have sufficed. But there was so much that just blew my mind or .

But it is NOT a terrible ending. Could it be better? Yeah. But also it could have been lots worse

Eren is one of my favourite characters in the series. I feel DEEPLY for him and will fight anyone who who claims he is a badly written character. He, just like everyone else in this series, has gone through and insane amount of trauma. Eren was TEN when his home was destroyed and his mother eaten in front of him. He’s since then witness misery until he joined the corps at age 15, where, guess what, he witness more destruction and death and friends being eaten, and himself turning out being a monster like the ones he vowed to destroy. An immense pressure is being put upon him to be saviour of the world. Comrades die because of him, he suffers deep betrayals from friends. He learns the truth about his father and his titan powers. Then learns the truth about the other side of the ocean, his father’s past, his own part in everything. . He carried a huge burden and it broke him.

People who give Eren so much hate needs to understand that he starts out as 10 years old, and at the end he’s 19. He’s a CHILD through most of the series and can barely be counted as adult at the last bit.

I could go on rambling about my love for Hange or Sasha or later on Pieck, but they all seem to be liked by the whole fandom so let’s do a ASDFGHJKL I LOVE THEM SO MUCH and be done with it.

(Reseña final y con spoilers)

[1 (?)]

Me siento defraudado."

(English) 08/04/2021: I've read the end and MY HEART IS VERY BROKEN RIGHT NOW. The ending is not what I expected, but that was even better because the story always surprised me.

I fell in love with Attack on Titan five years ago and i can't believe this story is over. This story blew my mind off completely. I was happy, I cried, I got angry and I loved too. Thank you Isayama-sensei for creating a wonderful story and for giving us such incredible characters, that they will always stay with me until the end of my life<3.

✨ Overall thoughts (after finishing all of the manga & anime Final season/S4 Part 1) ✨

I started this series when I was in a bad time in my life. AOT was my second anime ever and it truly changed the way I looked at anime after that.

I then started the manga in 2019 when I couldn't wait for S3 Part 2 and I was so blown away, especially when we got to Marley and I didn't know wtf was going on since it didn't feel like the story of AOT at all, which I assumed was just a basic shounen/action story about humans vs titans. The plot, characters and world-building were so beyond what I imagined.

Goodreads people seem nice most of the time but the Internet's anime/manga/weeb community can be ~very toxic~ when it comes to AOT, and while I'm one of those people that didn't love the way this ended, I'm so happy to have had a part in this AOT experience.

Now on to the next great shounen series.

(I'm still mad I missed the 2019 AOT rides at Universal Studios Japan. I went two months too early lmao).

Ch139
Uhhh having conflicted feelings. Lol @ all my predictions flew right out the window. Felt that the ending was lackluster (I'll also pretend those last few panels did not exist... #NotMyReiner). Maybe I’m just so used to all the plot twists this manga had that I was just expecting... more.

Ch 138

But is the curse of Ymir (13 years) even true at this point? We'll see... Last chapter to go 🥺

Not sure i liked the explanation of how it ended and why it all happened, but it ended with most of my favourite characters being intact, so there's that 🤷‍♀️

my favourite characters~
1. Levi Ackerman
2. Erwin Smith
3. Hange Zoë
4. Armin Arlert
5. Jean Kirstein
6. Reiner Braun
7. Falco Grice

Only if the explanation of why/how it all happened could have been as satisfactory and these character arcs.

Still a very solid anime. A masterpiece nevertheless. One of the best shows i've ever watched. Perfect 9/10 stars

*Sigh* Spoilers for this abomination.

What on earth?

This is the worst ending in a while. Eren is the subject of a complete character assassination. He was quite a fascinating character for a bit there. But in the end, he was ruined. He was just pretending to be the revolutionary. He doesn't even truly believe in his own ideologies. What a terrible idea for the writer. Why do that? He was on track to being one of the best MCs out there, and yet you decided to relegate him to nothing more substantial than a Walmart brand Lelouch.

Making him suddenly break down and whine about Mikasa moving on without him romantically, given the context of his ideals and the grand scheme of his influence on the world, was so absurdly pathetic. What the hell is he talking about? Who cares about Mikasa? And he never even truly changed the foundation of the world like he wanted. The song remained the same.

This was a monstrous waste of my time, and a poor ending to this series.

My only hope left is that the Anime has an original ending that fixes Eren's utterly dismantled character. If the anime handles this better, it can still salvage what was once a pretty brilliant narrative. I'm crossing my fingers. Please don't let me down.

pro-tip; don’t listen to arcade by duncan lawrence when you finish chapter 139 unless you want to hurt yourself even more.

okay so this concludes my full reread. yes i am typing this while crying, please mind your business. i actually don’t think i’ll ever get over this series, i’ve literally been with it for over 7 years and i’m not going to stop rereading it at least once a year because... i want to. the urge to reread it again is already extremely strong, but i have other things to worry about sadly.

ANYWAY i think isayama deserves a warm hug for everything he’s written and all the work he put into this series.

“Dedicate your heart.”

This is it. This is the end. Eren knew something the rest of us didn’t and he made the ultimate sacrifice for the greater good. This was truly a bittersweet ending. There’s a three year time skip after that fateful day. All of my babies are returning to Paradis with the hope of making things right even as their home is prepared to wage war against them under Yelena’s hateful might. I know they’ll be ok and I know Eren is watching over them.

I’m really going to miss this story. I take solace in the fact that I still have part 2 of the anime to look forward to, but I’m still sad to see this go. This was unlike anything I’ve ever read and I’ll miss every second of it, man-eating giants and all. I’ll miss Levi most of all haha.

Goodbye, Attack on Titan. And thank you Hajime Isayama for this masterpiece you brought to life.

Below are all of my individual mini reviews for each chapter if anyone cares lol.

135: Alright immediately everything went to hell. Titans are just being made everywhere. Things are hella dangerous. Everyone is just fighting to stay alive, but hey what else is new? As long as Levi makes it I’ll be ok. Armin too. The boy needs a hug.

136: Falco and Annie to the rescue! Things are still crazy. No one has died so far, but I don’t think it’ll stay that way. They’ve come to terms with the fact that they’ll need to kill Eren. Let’s see if they can actually do it. Honestly I can’t wait to see all of this animated. It’s so hard to discern exactly what is happening in black and white manga.

137: We learn a little more about the Founder Ymir with Armin and Zeke’s help. Things seem to be turning around now thanks to those of the past. Is this really the end for Eren? We’ll have to see. I believe there are only two more chapters left.

138: Ok this made me cry a little. The end is near. Let’s see what happens.

139: In the back of my mind I knew there was something off with everything involving Eren. I’m glad I was right.

Rip

I would give almost anything to watch/read it all again for the first time.
When I think about the word masterpiece I think about attack on titan. The foreshadowing, the characters, the plot, the commentary….
Genuinely the best worldbuilding ever.
