Two months have passed since seventeen-year-old Kaylee Hamilton's twin sister, Abby, disappeared without a trace, shattering the family she left behind. When Kaylee finally accepts that she may never see her twin again, Abby returns – but not as expected. To help her sister uncover who is responsible for her disappearance, Kaylee needs Abby’s assistance. Snag is, Abby only remembers the whereabouts of her secret diary. With the mystery unravelling towards a world of crime, Kaylee comes to the conclusion that everyone could be a potential suspect. And when she receives threatening messages warning her to stay away, she has to be quick. What if she’s the next person on the list? Torn between letting things lie, and rescuing her twin, will Kaylee be brave enough to take a leap into her sister’s unknown world?
An emotional tale of how a family deals with the disappearance of a child. The author brings to life the pain of being left behind, and the struggle to give support when your world has ended. For me, a few parts of the book did feel a bit unrealistic. I loved the strength of the main character and her refusal to give up until she solved the mystery even at the risk of her own life. The ending was a jaw dropping surprise. I would read another book by this author.
I loved the parallel worlds of the twins, Abby and Kaylee. As bits of Abby’s disappearance were revealed, I trusted no one. The twists, turns and mind-bending ending kept me glued to each page from the start. What a fantastic story! Highest recommendation.
The Whispering Magpies, by A. J Saunders. Every parent’s nightmare. A story to pull at your heartstrings. A dark, atmospheric tale with a supernatural element to delight and mystify the reader. The story is set two months after the disappearance of 17-year-old Abby. The authorities and her family were desperate to find her. When Kaylee begins to have ghostly visitations from her twin sister Abby, she comes to the horrific conclusion that her twin must be dead.
I enjoyed the opening chapters very much with the story unfolding smoothly. The middle chapters slowed in pace, and the plot became unrealistic and a little irritating too. But overall an interesting premise with a surprise ending.
When Abby disappears, her twin sister, Kalyee can’t accept she’s gone and struggles to come to terms with the family’s loss. Then she begins seeing Abby again, and Abby needs her help. This is an excellent book. It’s a mystery and a thriller and it has paranormal elements. The characters are well-defined and both Kalyee’s and Abby’s plight is so sad. The ending came as a bit of a shock.
The first thing that struck me about The Whispering Magpies was the sense of atmosphere: on the surface it is an ordinary world full of ordinary people, but the way the world is conveyed really fits the mood, making it full of darkness and fear. This, I think, was down to a clever combination of a strong opening segment, dark and terrible themes, and a strong emphasis on the emotions of Kaylee and her family, and this is what made me really enjoy this book.
Whilst the story may be told from Kaylee’s perspective, you get to really understand the misery of her family following the disappearance of Abby. In particular, I felt for her mother and her father, who desperately try to rationalise and understand their daughter’s appearance, but after time has gone on, even they are starting to feel the strain of defeat. Through the clever use of first-person, we even get snippets of the missing girl Abby herself, and listen to her internalised thoughts and worries as she tries to fill in the gaps of her memory. These were the stand-out segments of the book - her experiences and thoughts evoked a real sense of fear and really chilled me.
The paranormal elements of this book were excellent, starting off slow and then really ramping up as the story progressed. My only criticism was that the earlier ones were fairly standard for the genre (a sighting here, a dream there etc.) but as we learn more about Abby we start to see the author’s imagination really come into her own. I also liked the introductions of characters - each one was introduced slowly and gave me time to really suss them out, and by the mid-point of the book I was suspicious of everyone. This created the question in my mind that I needed an answer to, and is what really kept me ploughing through this book.
The Whispering Magpies by Adley Saunders is a riveting read for young adults and fans of the paranormal. I really could not recommended it enough. I feel I have found a real gem here that many more people should read.
A tense and gripping thriller with more twists than a corkscrew. Halfway through this book, I had it all sewn up and sorted out—only I didn't. The story explores the bond between identical twins. Abby has been kidnapped, and Kaylee sets out on a quest to find out what has happened to her. However, she isn't alone. Abby appears in spirit form to help her unravel the clues. Abby doesn't know what happened. She has no memory and is confused about whether she is alive or dead.
As Kaylee gets closer to the truth, menace and danger stalk her at every turn.
We see the effects of a lost child on the rest of the family who are at breaking point and how a teenager, who has always been half of a pair, copes on her own. Every time she looks in a mirror, she sees her sister looking back at her. Kaylee turns to her boyfriend, but he has his own issues and trouble understanding Abby's appearances.
The pace and tension build well through the book, and the end jumps out at you from nowhere in a final and unexpected twist that knocks you for six.
An excellent story that takes you on a roller-coaster barrage of intrigue and emotions to the very last word.
Another unexpected pairing comes in the afterword when we discover that A J Saunders is a writing collaboration between two friends. They make a good team, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with next. An exciting and thrilling read with some lovely characters. Highly recommended.
This is such an amazing story, I'm not even sure where to start.
Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. Ghost story. This has it all.
Kaylee's twin sister has disappeared without a trace, but now her ghost is coming to visit. The catch is, only Kaylee can see and talk to her. With the few small tidbits of info her sister gives her, Kaylee and her boyfriend Alex set out to not only solve the mystery of Abby's disappearance, but also to try to find her. Even though visions of Abby seem to fade in and out at random times, Kaylee isn't convinced she's seeing a ghost. She believes the twin-connection they have is somehow allowing Abby to talk to her.
A plethora of bad guys (or are they?) show up along the way, adding to the danger as Kaylee and Alex slowly piece together the puzzle of what happened to Abby. But will they find her before Abby is gone forever, or before they themselves become the next victims?
This story is suspenseful from start to finish. The mystery deepens, the plot thickens, and the twists and turns never end. Although some of the action was predictable, the ending blew me away. When I finally got there, and just when I thought I had it all figured out, I felt like I'd been slammed into a brick wall.
You will not be disappointed with this ghost story mystery with an ending so unbelievable, you won't see it coming.
This mystery novel held a lot of promise. Set two months after the disappearance of 17 year old Abby, there was a lot of potential in her distraught family - parents, twin sister Kaylee, and younger brother Ryan - as they struggle to come to terms with what’s happened and continue to search for Abby. Added interest was provided in Abby appearing to Kaylee, giving her clues that helped solve the mystery.
The one thing I liked about this novel were the chapters written from Abby’s point of view. I found them well written, engaging and relevant.
The mystery of what happened to Abby was well thought out and had a lot going for it, even if the execution left a lot to be desired.
Unfortunately, this novel didn’t work for me. Abby has only been missing for two months, yet I found Kaylee and her family’s actions more plausible for six months or longer post disappearance. Kaylee has supposedly gone through too much in those two months - losing weight until her bones poked through her clothes, then gaining so much weight through overeating that she needed to take up running to lose weight again. She’s gone through therapy, started a new relationship, is studying for her A levels and contemplating moving out to university. All possible, of course, but didn’t seem plausible to me within the time line.
The world building too is strange. Her father’s job is talked about a lot, without it ever being explained what he does. Abby was working when she disappeared, but while the company is named, it’s never explained what the company does. People pay for things with bank notes rather than mention the currency. The details of Abby’s disappearance were never described. The police behave unrealistically. A subplot comes out of thin air. People appear and disappear without reason. Everything is so dreamlike, it’s almost as if it’s deliberate.
I only continued reading because other reviewers mentioned a twist, however I didn’t find it surprising as I’d already figured it out early on, but I was hoping that I was wrong and the authors were heading in a more original direction. It is a trope I particularly dislike as it is overused in horror movies, and it also renders much of this novel nonsensical.
Given this book had so much potential, I would have loved a deeper exploration of the grief and desperation of having a twin sister go missing and a more grounded examination into what had happened to Abby.
The Whispering Magpies was an enjoyable read. At first glance, the cover seemed very dark, so I wasn't too sure what to expect, but I was happy that it wasn't as spooky as I thought it would be.
It was a bit of a mystery, and I found there always seemed to be another twist or turn. Whenever I thought I had worked something out, it went in the other direction instead.
The main character did annoy me a bit. I tried to be understanding that she was under a lot of stress, but there were a few times I was screaming at the book for her not to do what she was about to do, and each time she did it anyway!
Without going into any spoilers, I will say that there were one or two things that I was right about and quite a few things I was wrong about, but the ending I didn't expect. I'm not sure if I liked the finale or hated it, but I know I have a huge question, and I would love to ask the authors about it.
Actually, after writing this, I feel the ending was a great twist, but yes, there is still the question I have.
The prologue to this book is probably a victim's worst nightmare. We are thrust into a violent situation with Abby and then must watch as she endures the pain and torment to come.
Then we start the book we meet Kaylee, the twin sister of Abby who is now coping with her loss. I find the inclusion of the magpies interesting. The fact that the family refers to Abby's loss and disappearance rather than death is so intriguing.
As the magpies, a type of bird, get more described, I realize they aren't ravens but a species that seems to be connected to witch lore. As for Kaylee, she keeps seeing them, remembering her sister's rhyme and experiencing the feeling of impending doom.
This book gets curious as the twin receives a visit from her sister, seeming to guide her to something. So I get the feeling that Abby is alive but somehow disconnected. Her visits to her twin sister are a bit strange. I'm kinda wondering where she is and why her family is not notified of her issues.
This book is very suspenseful as Kaylee, and her boyfriend try to figure out what happened to her sister and by who. I find it intriguing that the magpies correlate to the events, the birds, and the rhyme, as well as more sinister groups of people in the book.
This book gets even more twisted as they uncover clues to the perpetrator who hurt Abby and the reason behind it. I thought that would end it with a happily ever after, but was I wrong. Instead, the book gets dark and twisted and has a shocking ending.
I have to say this book was intriguing from the start. I wanted to know the who and the why as to the immediate dark scene. As the book got going, I honestly felt like it took too long to get the answers. But I enjoyed the suspense and clue that the readers got to stumble upon with Alex and Kaylee. I felt the parents probably were a little naive as all this happened under their nose, and they didn't seem the wiser. However, the ending of this book was one heck of a twisted result.
I began reading the book thinking it would take me at least three or four days but I finished it within 2! The opening chapters left me wanting to know more. Kaylee and Abby are 17 year old twin sisters and being a twin myself could imagine the fear the family felt. Abby goes missing and it obvious from the beginning of the book that she has been kidnapped. The family go through pure misery as the hunt for Abby drags on. Just when Kaylee has given up hope Abby appears in Ghost form that only her twin can see giving snippets of information to help her unravel the case. Abby doesn't even know what has happened to her. Kaylee and her boyfriend Alex embark on the rocky road of trying to unravel and solve the mystery of missing Abby. The Author is brilliant as describing the loss a family would feel in the situation, the absolute grief is so realistic so much so I was drowned in sorrow myself until Abby turns up in spirit form to help her sister found out who done it. An fabulous read one that would make a great Netflix series. 5 star
Action Packed Paranormal Thriller Clear your schedule. Once you start reading this action-packed paranormal thriller you will not want to put it down. The reader hears from coma-bound and missing Abby throughout the novel as her twin sister works feverishly to find her and solve the mystery of who attacked her. There are subplots that add to the suspense. The book takes an immersive approach placing the crime victim into the investigation via her paranormal appearances and communications with her sister in spirit form. The story played out in such a way that I did not know who to trust throughout the plot and the ending took me completely by surprise. This is not an ending with a twist; it’s a roundoff double backflip!
The Whispering Magpies is well-written and has a fast-moving plot. It’s an easy read and the characters are easy to relate to. I found the story intriguing. When one twin sister goes missing, the family is put into turmoil. The intrigue continues when the surviving twin sees her missing sister as a ghost on multiple occasions. The dilemma for the surviving sister is two-fold: should she tell her parents all that hope is lost and that their other daughter is dead, and how will she prove that her sister was murdered and find out who the killer is. These questions lead the reader on a path of twists and turns, and that kept me turning the pages. The ending was unexpected and a clever twist by the author A.J. Saunders.
I very much enjoyed this mystery thriller. The story has two main facets; a whodunnit involving the disappearance of Abby, the twin sister of the MC, Kaylee, and what appears on the surface to be a paranormal angle based on Abby’s ghostly visitations to Kaylee. The intrigue and suspense are skilfully paced, building layer upon layer as Kaylee attempts to solve the puzzle. Like Kaylee, there were moments when I didn’t know who to trust, though I sometimes wanted to shake her for keeping things bottled up instead of confiding in her parents. In this, she acted like a typical teen! Is the conclusion supernatural or science fiction? Whatever you decide, it will leave you questioning the nature of reality. Highly recommended.
Oh my! I found this paranormal thriller unputdownable. Adley J Saunders blurs the lines between reality and the supernatural with atmospheric writing that explores familial bonds and grief as Kaylee struggles to understand her twin sister Abby’s mysterious disappearance. Saunders brings the characters' struggles to life, making every shadow, whisper, and fleeting glimpse of Abby tangible. Another narrative twist increases the suspense as you think you’ve figured it out. The magpies add an eerie symbology to thought-provoking questions about memory, trauma, and the nature of belief. However, the jaw-dropping ending lifts this supernatural mystery into a conclusion that makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about the story. The Whispering Magpies is a haunting, unforgettable novel. Read it!
Sooo that ending really messed with my head. I sat there thinking for a good five mintues about everything I just read, trying to make sense of how it all wove together. I wasn't overly thrilled with the ending, I was rather disappointed but that's just me. However overall the story keeps you on the balls of your feet wondering what will happen next and who was behind Abbys strangulation and disappearance. Some of it was easy to seeing coming but some things you kept turning the pages for, to see if your thoughts were right or not. Overall I did enjoy the story just wished for a different ending lol.
This book is a blend of a mystery thriller and a whodunnit, with a touch of the paranormal added for good measure. All in all, it was an entertaining read that I enjoyed. Seventeen-year-old Kaylee finds it hard to accept that her twin, Abby, is missing and struggles to come to terms with the family’s loss. Then Abby reappears, but not as expected, and Kaylee is desperate to help her twin discover who was responsible for her disappearance. With many red herrings to throw the reader off the scent, by the middle of the book, I was suspecting pretty much all of the characters, and whilst I was expecting something unusual, I certainly didn’t guess the ending.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last. Very well written and engaging story that paints such vivid pictures of every scene. You just have to keep reading to see what happened to Abby Hamilton as her sister and her boyfriend piece everything together. I don't want to give anything away, so I won't say more. This is one of the best books I've read in a while, and I read a lot. I highly recommend this book!!!
Kaylee lost her twin sister Abby, she just disappeared and it gravely affected the family. Strange things started happening and when Abby appeared before her as a ghost, Kaylee had her answer but needed to know more. What a fantastic storyline. Creative, easy to read, a plot that gathers pace and definitely the suspense keeps you turning those pages. It's one of those books where you think you know where it's going then a curve ball totally throws you. What an ending, I didn't see that coming. Brilliant.
Whispering Magpies starts with a bang and continued to keep me enthralled throughout. When Abby is attacked and left in a coma her family are left completely unaware of what’s happened to her. Her twin sister, Kaylee, is the most affected. When she starts seeing signs that her sister is trying to communicate with her, it’s left to Kaylee and her new boyfriend to find out what happened. I’m a fan of anything spooky so this was just my cup of tea. I enjoyed it immensely and will be looking for the author’s other titles.
The writing is so exquisite that it almost seemed like I was witnessing a work of art unfolding before me. A.J. Saunders' characters are so well-developed and believable that I almost felt like I was a part of the story. I was so absorbed by the unpredictable atmosphere that I couldn't help but be drawn in. The language was clear and descriptive, and I found myself enthralled by the story and deeply invested in the outcome - it was like I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!
This was an enjoyable read. Although I don’t personally have any siblings, I did a lot of research into twins during my nursing career. The exploration of the twin bond in the story came across as genuine and you could really feel the emotional loss throughout the story, especially for Kaylee. My only niggle with the story is that Abby was only supposed to have gone missing two months previously, yet her family seem to have gone through more than two months worth of trauma, hence the four star rating. The story is interesting with an original, heart-breaking twist and well worth the read.
I enjoyed reading this book. From the start I was hooked. The wording was wonderful and the storyline kept me coming back. The genre of the book was one of my favorites. I love crime, mystery, thrillers. My favorite part about this book was it took me almost the whole story to figure out the twist. I usually figure the twist out at the halfway point. However this book kept me guessing until the last 13 pages. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is there was a few spelling errors in names.
I really enjoyed this story of twin sisters, Abby and Kaylee. I'm not generally a fan of supernatural or ghost stories, but this was so much more. The relationship between twins is special, so I can understand how Kaylee was the only one who could see or interact with Abby. The author added mystery and intrigue to the story, and the surprise ending was satisfying. It was well written and easy to read. Overall, A really good book.
Paranormal page-turner. Whispering Magpies is a thrilling story from the start. We all know twins have a strong bond and when Kaylee’s twin, Abbey disappears the bond they share gives them the ability to communicate, which takes you on a dark paranormal rollercoaster. With lots of suspense and twists this well-written story keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way to the end. Enjoyed it immensely!
The story is about Kaylee trying to discover what happened to her missing twin sister Abby. Kaylee can’t disclose all she knows to her parents, and she has a few encounters on her own. The beginning’s a bit slow, and there are overused cliches like, “going out of style,” “Scare the pants off her,” and “knocked for six.” There were a lot of unexpected twists and the ending was great. I recommend it for the age group it's intended for.
A delightful tragic whodunit/mystery. It is well-written, has plenty of twists and turns, lots of suspense and danger, making for a thoroughly enjoyable read. It is one of those books that you can easily read in one sitting, as I did, and a real page-turner. The characters are fleshed out and there are plenty of ‘bad guys’ to choose from. A recommended read.
This book was very well written and a real page turner. As Kaylee tries to solve the mystery of her twin sister’s disappearance, the clues suggest many potential suspects and scenarios. It kept me guessing until the very end. I would definitely recommend.
The Whispering Magpies, by A J Saunders ending, was a surprise like the Thomas Covenant series. With that said, I found the description well done. The story flowed naturally. It had some great suspense. I wanted to know more until the last chapter.
A very well written and clever whodunnit mystery with with many twists and turns that keep you guessing till the very end. I was shocked by the end it left on a very bleak but unpredictable note.
