About the author

Polish writer, journalist and adventurer, studied philosophy and natural science at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and later in Poznań and the University of Leipzig. Took part in the Greater Poland Uprising in 1918, was one of the organizers of the Polish Military Organisation from 1918 to 1920.

He travelled to Mexico, Indochina, Brazil, Madagascar, West Africa, Canada and United States, amongst other countries. He wrote 32 books that have been translated into 23 languages and sold over 10 million copies in total. His most famous and popular book, written in 1942, was "Dywizjon 303" (Squadron 303) about the legendary Kościuszko Squadron fighting during the Battle of Britain; it sold over 1.5 million copies.

I really enjoyed this book. It tells the story of exiled polish air fighters who escaped Poland after Germany invaded in September of 1939. First to Romania, then to help France fight their mutual enemy. After France was occupied, then again escaped to Great Britain. Within a year, Britain formed polish fighting squadrons under the RAF leadership. At first they were doubted as true fighters because after all they had capitulated to Germany and further perhaps they were demoralized. Not the case. Squadron 303 was the most famous of these squadrons as its notoriety was solidified during the Battle for Britain in September 1940. They distinguished themselves in rarefied company with the number of enemy planes destroyed. The knocked 3 times the number of planes on average out of the sky then British squadrons did while suffering a third of the casualties.
Fiedler originally wrote this book while following these men during this conflict. It was published in London in 1942 and subsequently smuggled into occupied Poland. It is cited as instrumental in motivating the AK (the underground movement in Poland). As well, this is now required reading in Polish grade-school classes. This particular book is a re-release celebrating the 70-year anniversary of this momentous time, translated as well into English for the first time since its original publication, adding additional information about the plight of these fighters.
I found the author's writing to be sweeping in its narrative and very gripping - I couldn't put the book down. I felt at times like I was along for the ride with these pilots. Their guts, stamina and skill are unparalleled. I am very grateful to have won this book through the Goodreads Firstread Giveaway. I will highly recommend this to anyone. One of my favorite books I read in 2010.

All I can say about this book and the exploits it details is WOW! (not wow, but WOW!). Fiedler wrote this at the height of the Battle of Britain as he spent time with the pilots and ground crews of 303 Squadron as they defended the lands of Britain as if they were their own. In fact they often defended them better than those born and bred on these shores as they had seen their own homeland destroyed by the Nazi machine and were on a quest to restore not only their own pride but that of their people, and I think we can say without a shadow, glimpse or glimmer of a doubt that they did so and they did so with a sense of honour and bravery that is vastly lacking in today's society. Fiedler captures their determination, pride and bravery perfectly but still manages to portray their vulnerability, humanity and sense of feeling that many war novels forget makes a good soldier/pilot a great one. He brings the battles of the era to life and makes the reader grip the pages as they twist, turn and dive through the air, ducking as bullets whizz past their ears and gasp for air as they leap from the smoking wrecks of their aircraft, just as those men did all those years ago. This is war writing as it should be, exhilarating, breath-taking, goosebump making and heart-breaking.

Churchill w trakcie trwania bitwy o Anglię wypowiedział słynne słowa, skierowane do narodu, do wojska, do pilotów, nie tylko tych z dywizjonu 303, ale do nich też: "Nigdy tak wielu nie zawdzięczało tak wiele tak nielicznym”.

Historia dywizjonu 303 jest fascynująca. Podoba mi się tez sposób w jaki Arkady Fiedler napisal ta książkę. Ma ona format reportażu.

Co wyniosłem z przeczytania tej książki?

Mianowicie, oprócz mnóstwa faktów historycznych, ważnych ze względu na znaczenie strategiczne Bitwy o Anglie na tle calej drugiej wojny światowej, wyniosłem z tej książki opisy, szczegóły innych aspektów udziału Polaków w Bitwie o Anglię rzadziej moim zdaniem zauważanych.

Wielka motywacja pilotów. Przenosząc kontekst wojenny na drugi plan, determinacja, wysoka motywacja, chęć do zespołowego dzialania pilotów robi niesamowite wrażenie. Szkoda tylko, ze zazwyczaj w kontekście wojny ma to miejsce, i tak trudno jest to przenieść na życie codzienne w sytuacji pokojowej. Chodzi tu o jednostkę jak i i grupę. Zagrożenie, kontekst konfliktu zbrojnego jest wielkim motywatorem. Jednak żyjemy w czasach pokoju, świadomi powinniśmy sie na wzajem motywować, tak aby osiągać poziom motywacji pilotów dywizjonu 303 w normalnym kontekście pokojowym dnia codziennego. "easier said than done".

Aspekt kulturowy. Mimo, ze dywizjon 303 często tytułowany jest jako"polski" dywizjon, nie byl on tak do końca"czysto" polski. Dowódca był Kanadyjczykiem, dywizjon działał operacyjnie w strukturach brytyjskich, obsługa nie była zawsze polska, nawet z Polakami latał Czech. Dla mnie dywizjon 303 to niesamowity multi-kulturalny "case study".

Oh my. I loved this book. First heard about it in the remarkable book by Lynne Olson, Last Hope Island. This, too, is a great book of history and The Battle of Britain. The hitherto little known and recognized tremendous impact the Polish Airforce had in deciding the defeat of the Germany bombing raids over Britain. The Polish airmen were not recognized for their valor and superior skills until well after the war. How many of us knew of their squadrons fighting for the British? Great read! But, read Last Hope Island first and get the whole picture. Lynne Olson is a great historian.

Miałam ogromny problem z ocenieniem tej książki, ale ostatecznie padło na 3/5⭐️.
Z jednej strony była to książka bardzo nudna i żmudna (czytało mi się ją dosłownie jak podręcznik od historii), ale z drugiej wiem ile ta książka może znaczyć dla niektórych osób. Nie mogę powiedzieć, że ta książka nie zapadnie mi w pamięci, bo zapewne tak nie będzie, bynajmniej ze względu na to, że był to utwór oparty na faktach, który pokazuje jakie sytuacje przytrafiły się niektórym Polakom te (powiedzmy) 80 lat temu.
Podsumowując: książka nudna, ale warta poświęcenia uwagi. Przynajmniej dla samej zasady.

Szybka lektura, przeczytana na dwa razy. Stosunkowo wciągająca ze wględu na ukazanie ciekawej, innej niż w moich dotychczasowych lekturach wojennych, perspektywy zmagań międzyludzkich w czasach IIwś. Opisy walki prowadzonej w dalekich częściach ziemskiej atmosfery, które mimo, że tak odległe miały niezwykle istotny wpływ na losy świata. Interesujące, wręcz oniryczne momentami zapierały dech w piersiach, mimo braku wizualnego punktu widzenia; to trzeba oddać autorowi, że pisarzem to był on pierwszej klasy.
Ale skoro już o tym mowa, to warto też podkreślić całościową idee książki, widzianą moimi oczami;
trochę heroicznego patriotyzmu poprzeplatanego z wydarzeniami historycznymi. Niestety większa część książki podchodzi można by wręcz rzec pod propagandę wojenną, ale patrząć w jakim celu zostało zlecone autorowi jej stworzenie, to właśnie taką funkcję miała spełnić. Spełniła i to jak. Aż człowiekowi by się chciało dołączyć do walk z ,,adolfkami'' jak to prześmiewczo nazywali niemieckie Luftwaffe Polacy z dywizjonu 303. Jednakże w dzisiejszych czasach, funkcję tą książka tak naprawdę straciła i pozostała jedynie artefaktem wydarzeń tamtych zmagań wychwalących naszych dzielnych lotników, którzy mimo upadku Polski, sami nie upadli.
Niestety ciężko patrzeć na tę lekturę jako książkę historyczną, bo mimo wszystko została napisana w wyżej wymienionych celu oraz ujęta przez artystę, a nie myśliwica. Stąd moje odczucia trochę mieszane, bo całościowo treść nie pokazała drastycznych scen, nieodłącznych wojnie, a jedynie bohaterstwo i ideoologię cudownych żołnieży.
Ogółnie byla to przyjemna lektura, ale traktowana z dystansem; wręcz z przyjemnością czytania nieodpowiedniemu tekstom tego rodzaju :P

Jako, że książkę te ukradłam z bilbioteczki mojej babci wydanie miałam w formie papierowej i nie sprzyjało ono zapisywaniu cytatów, mimo, że było ich sporo ciekawych. Stąd będzię ich taka mała liczba, ale wydanie z 80 roku w pełni to wynagrodzilło! Piękny zażółcony papier z klimatem i dodatkowo zdjęcia i akwarele oddały super nastrój :D

W powietrzu powstaje nowy proces biologiczny tak fantastyczny, o jakim marzył chyba jedynie Leonardo da Vinci. Pasy, którymi przed startem przywiązują myśliwca do maszyny, są wymownym symbolem. W małej kabinie pilot nie może się ruszać i jest w niej zamknięty jak mózg w czaszce. To rzeczywiście mózg w czaszce metalowego ptaka.

W miarę wzbijania się w górę następuje cudowna przemiana. Człowiek dosłownie wrasta w maszynę, zespala się z nią w jedno żywe ciało. Jest to już nowy stwór, na poły ludzki, na poły mechaniczny. Wrażliwsi myśliwcy wyraźnie odczuwają, że nerwy ich sięgają do końca skrzydeł samolotu. Czują je tam zupełnie namacalnie i zmysłowo, a gdy przeciwnik rozpłata im skrzydło, doznają wstrząsu, jak gdyby zraniono im własne członki.
Silnik jest olbrzymim sercem myśliwca, który jakby nie miał już swego własnego serca. Życie myśliwca jest związane z owym wielkim sercem, a jeśli ono przestanie działać, następuje katastrofa.''

The 303 Squadron by Arkady Fiedler, is a re-release of the author's most popular and well-known book. A travel writer, Fiedler was in the South Pacific when World War II broke out and he returned to Europe to fight with the Polish army against Germany. This book describes the exploits of an under recognized and under celebrated group of Polish. Pilots who were trained by the Polish Air Force and were a significant force in the defense of Great Britain and the Battle of Britain in 1940.

The book is very well written and accessible and the translation is superb. (Too often I have found translations to be inadequate, making exciting books stilted and boring). There are copious photographs which are informative and apt to the narrative. The illustrations of the main fighter planes of the battle, the Messerschmitt 109, the Hurricane and the Spitfire are valuable. The author gives us a good feel for the personality of the Polish fighter pilots, who were not old, but very bold to coin an old bromide.

Few people outside of Polish immigrant community, history buffs, and academe are aware that the Battle of Britain was fought not just by the British. Others, including Poles, Canadians and Czechs did as well. The Poles constituted the largest number of non-British fighter pilots of a squadron that was situated between London and the European continent. During the Battle of Britain the Polish pilots shot down proportionately more Germans than any other pilots and proportionately had lower number of pilots and planes shot down than any other nationalities. There is little question about the bravery of the Polish pilots and this was represented by the large number of high level decorations awarded by the Brits and by Poland to these pilots. Of course, this does not diminish the bravery of the Brits, or even for that matter of the Germans who were getting shot down and yet still kept coming.

The major drawback of this book is that we don't know how the Polish pilots managed to be so much more successful in their missions than the German and the British pilots. We know better than to say that the Polish pilot was braver, but we are left unsatisfied as to understanding why the Poles were so much better. Was it their training in the Polish Air Force that was different? Was it their prior experience in flying in defense of Poland during the early part of the war? Another point not considered was that the 303 used primarily Hurricanes, whereas most casual readers have heard about the British Spitfire - perhaps Spitfire was a more compelling name. But the fact is that that Brits used Spitfires and Poles used Hurricanes. Was the Hurricane a better airplane than the Spitfire and this was what accounted for some of the Poles extraordinary successes? These compelling questions remain unanswered.

Uwielbiam tą książkę, tą historię, ludzi ją tworzących. Polecam to każdemu, kto chce poznać dzieje polskich lotników w Bitwie o Anglię. Kompletnie nie czuć, że jest to historia prawdziwa, bo czyta się to jak dobrą książkę przygodową, a krótkie zdania nadają jej tylko dynamiczności.

Jednak czytając ją, zwracałam uwagę na to, jak polscy lotnicy lubili latać i walczyć, jak byli dumni z przynależności do Dywizjonu 303, jak odważnymi ludźmi byli i jak pięknie odpłaciła im się Anglia za swoje oddanie w walkę o nieswoją ziemię. Smutne.

Muszę się przyznać, że “Dywizjonu 303” nie czytałem w latach szczenięcych, mimo że mój brat chodził do szkoły imienia Arkadego Fiedlera, mimo że mieszkałem blisko Puszczykowa i kiedyś bardzo chciałem kupić tam działkę i wybudować dom.

Sama historia dywizjonu 303 i innych polskich dywizjonów (poznańskiego) była mi oczywiście znana. Nie przeszkadzało mi to jednak w lekturze. Nawet sam patriotyczny język, patos, dość tendencyjny przekaz utworu i wzmożone napięcie, nie wpływały na negatywny odbiór dzieła. Wręcz przeciwnie. Po raz pierwszy czytałem książkę, która mimo tych zabiegów mnie nie odrzuciła, a wręcz przyciągnęła. Chyba ta historia, Ci ludzie, bronią się swoim zaangażowaniem, dokonaniami, brawurą i prostotą tęskniących serc.

Za najlepsze uważam fragmenty refleksji pisarza pod koniec każdego z opowiadań. Szkoda, że nie zostały jednak bardziej rozbudowane wątki wewnętrznej walki pilotów i mechaników. Napięcia między przyjaciółmi, dywizjonami a zwierzchnictwem angielskim. Samą książkę warto przeczytać dla opowiadania “wróg tańczy taniec śmierci”, dla tych opisów podniebnych zmagań. Bardzo ciekawe, że najlepszy pilot Royal Air Forice - Czech wolał być samotnym łowcą i latać z Polakami ze względu na ich umiejętności.

Na pewno pojadę niedługo do muzeum Arkadego Fiedlera w Puszczykowie i wypije szklankę whisky, tak jak piloci mieli w zwyczaju rozliczać się w tym trunku za podniebne przysługi. Chwała ich pamięci. Ja bym tak nie potrafił.

I read an older edition (1943). While not my usual genre, an incredible book. I wish my dad were alive so that I could share it with him.

I remember someone commenting to Dad, in my presence, "but you weren't in the fighting," as though that made his service less important or less sacrificial. Squadron 303 focuses primarily on fighter pilots--a job I certainly don't have the nerves for. And these pilots were absolutely some of the best--seemingly taking more risks yet enduring fewer casualties. They knew what they were doing. I felt ever aware that these Polish pilots shot down German "machines." I can't imagine how you'd deal with shooting down fathers, sons, and grandsons.

This book dedicates a chapter to the airplane mechanics, which my dad was. There were no victories if the mechanics didn't keep the planes in good repair. The pilots highly valued the mechanics and though Dad wasn't of this Squadron, I know that he spent time in England and that his letters from WWII mirror some of these mechanics experiences.

We owe all our service men and women a huge thank you for defending our country.

A moving contemporary account of exile Polish pilots in action in the Battle of Britain. The book gives an understanding of the hurdles they had to jump to even get into action and bravery in deciding the narrow but decisive victory in the Battle.


The contemporary writing is supplemented by appendices which informs the reader about what happens to some of the pilots afterwards and puts into context the disappointment that Poland was not truly liberated until 1989.

A good read for all those with an interest in this area.

Good fast read. Anyone reading this book during the war time and German occupation of Poland must have been extremely proud with such brave skilled air fights and resistance they shown. Great hope that sooner or later nazis can be crushed no matter what advanced weapons and strategy they had. Amazing memories apart from British "your job is done, goodbye now" attitude later in time...but let's not spoil the spirit of the book. If I'm not mistaken this was a mandatory position in school 20 years ago..perhaps still is, don't know.

Yes, I really enjoyed this factual book on the contribution of the Polish squadron in world war 2. Being British we always hear about the Battle of Britain from our own prospective. I knew that the Polish did contribute to the war effort but hadn't relised that they had their own Squadron. The pictures in the book are bonus. ~I found that the book was quite easy to read and was detailed in facts.

Książka opisująca zmagania polskich pilotów w Anglii. Występuje tutaj dużo opisów, myśli oraz opinii ważnych dla tego okresu ludzi, którzy zachwycali się zdolnościami Polaków. Mi osobiście omawiane dzieło czytało się bardzo dobrze, płynnie, jednak zdaje sobie sprawę, że osoby nie lubiące książek z motywem wojny nie polubią najprawdopodobniej tej lektury. Zanim zaczęłam czytać, myślałam, że będzie to książka opisująca, samoloty, maszyny, uzbrojenie i inne takie nudne sprawy. Jednak bardzo pozytywnie się zaskoczyłam. Okazało się, że książka opisuje najlepsze wybryki Polaków, podczas Bitwy o Anglię z 1940 roku. Nie oceniam, bo nie czuję się kwalifikowaną osobą. Wiadomo, że książka potrzebna i ma w sobie dużo wartości, ale czytanie o myśliwcach i bombowcach było dość męczące....
