**'A story is not worth a thousand words: it is worth only itself,as are the thousand words..There is no truth. There is only perception..'

Decent read!
Okay storyline but was not as good as i thought the storytelling would have been -- nice secondary characters though.

I think I finally understand why I like Lise Gold’s characters so much. They remind me of my wife. They’re good and selfless women who do their best to make life beautiful and easier for the people they love. They’re strong (much stronger than they think) and flawed, sweet and determined.

Mia Donoghue loves her job as a senior purser. Travelling, discovering new places or enjoying favourite ones helps her cope with the guilt she’s been carrying for fifteen years, guilt that has kept her away from her family. On one of her flights, she meets Ava Alfarsi, who has recently been promoted to captain. Mia and Ava soon find out that they share more than an immediate and undeniable attraction.

When they first meet, Ava seems to be at her better place in her life, yet she has huge control issues. They both make the other stronger, even though Mia is not ready to admit it at first.

One of the things I’ve discovered these past months, with Lise Gold’s books in particular, is how much I love simple stories that tackle sensitive issues without any violence. Don’t get me wrong, I love complicated stories, I love getting lost in labyrinthine tales. But I also love straightforward simplicity. Day to day life, when cleverly told, can be fascinating.

Lise Gold has a gift for creating lovely characters, Mia and Ava are no exceptions. Another Gold trademark is the travelling, and this book takes the readers to Dubai, New York, Kuala Lumpur… Every time I read a book by Lise Gold, I want to buy a plane ticket. Every single time.

Despite the delicate topic (addiction and the every day struggle that is sobriety), Fireflies is a pretty joyful novel, with plenty of banter and steamy scenes. And loads and loads of feelings. Once again, it’s everything I love. And the narration, by Stevie Zimmerman, is excellent.

This book was a very pleasant surprise! Both characters were very likable and the struggle they go through is quite a sensitive topic that I haven’t been exposed to a lot in general so it was quite interesting to get a knowledge of how this affects people.
One extremely important point I would like to highlight here is: Bravo Lise Gold for getting the Arab/Middle Eastern culture right! I think you were spot on right to the details which to be honest rarely happens when it comes to this specific culture so I salute you for this!
If you are looking for a quick fun and fluffy read, that’s not for you! If you are looking for something deep, with struggles and 2 amazing characters then go for it :)

A heartfelt, moving and inspiring story.

This is the kind of book that sucks you in from the beginning. A superb storyline, the characters have depth, the pacing is spot on and the chemistry and the passion are top notch. I loved the flirtatious banter and how their relationship developed. Also the emotions felt very real. Yes, this author knows how to write and this is definitely my new favorite book by Lise Gold. Grab your copy and get ready to be taken on a bumpy emotional journey with Ava and Mia to some of the most exotic places around the world.

Update - October 2020

I've now listened to the audiobook of this too and wish I could add more stars to my already 5 star review.

I was a little jarred at first when the book first started because it's narrated in an English accent. I'm not sure why I found it so surprising - the book is set in England - and I'm English - but perhaps it shows just how much American content I consume.

The story is one I've always connected with deeply, so this was a great audiobook listen for me. I still love both the MCs and whilst the story is heart wrenching at times, it's a great book.

As always - I highly recommend Gold - and if you don't fancy starting a new series this is the perfect standalone to introduce yourself to her work

***

I didn't realise how much I needed a book like this in my life, until I was reading it. I completely misunderstood it was going to be about, not knowing anything about the airline industry, but that didn't matter, I was hooked from the start. I love Gold's writing and this book stands out because of it.

The storyline felt genuine and honest, I loved both of the MCs and I found myself rooting for everything to work out. Their families were interesting and not just thrown in there to pad out the story - they had valid parts to play.

This will definitely be added to my re-read list - I almost want to go ahead and re-read it now.

I liked this book. The mc’s were very nice people and their characters were well developed. Both mc’s have a huge problem which complicates their lives enormously. It was good to read that they basically persevere in trying to get grip on their lives and problem. Both mc’s were sensitive to the needs of the other. The writer took time to let the love between the mc’s develop though the attraction between them was quite instantaneously.
All in all a good read, 3.8 stars

Lise Gild writes flawed but loveable characters.characters that would do anything to make the life of the other better, and it’s no different in this book.

I had slight issues with it in the beginning because I felt like Gold picked up some storylines to pony drop them again. In thee d I was wrong, these storylines are started, so we get to know Mia and Ava (and their flaws), and there issues, the storylines get picked up one by one to deal with them.
I like all the mutual ground, the understanding between Mia and Ava. It’s fun how there romance is this different type of workplace romance that at first only seems to happen away from. It’s to be expected with the nature of their jobs of course. I like how we get to explore the places and the characters as they do the same.

It’s an enjoyable read that was just a bit different to get into for me.

4 Stars - Lise Gold is a solid romance author and she delivers another excellent story with great characters, who are very human and flawed but fighting to be their best selves. Since the characters are a major carrier airline pilot and a senior purser we get to visit a lot of interesting locations like Abu Dahabi, Dubai, and New York. For those that hate dumb dark moments, this one has a separation but it is for reasons outside the relationship and 100% completely makes sense. If you have KU and the blurb looks interesting to you, I highly recommend it.

My second read by Ms.Gold, didn't love it as much as The Cruise but it was still an okay read. Ms.Gold enthralled me with behind the scenes of a commercial flight, great locations- Middle East, New York and Kuala Lumpur. The hs were haunted by the same 'demon', Mia more so than Ava. The attraction was insta but thankfully they did not exchange the ILYs until the 9O%. Beautiful epilogue, the fireflies were there, a ring and a proposal too and it happened in KL, Malaysia:)

This was in my TBR list for a long time. For the first 72% I felt this was a color by numbers: interesting locations and a MC of color, but nothing special, typical lesfic. The only thing going for It was the slightly unusual bedroom dynamic which we all know would “fix” itself by the end.

It was like I was reading a color by numbers how to appeal to the maximum number of readers.

Then the shit hit the fan and the usual breakup bump happened. The characters became real for me then. Even though there was still a lot of cliche and the story was really easy to predict, I actually felt real emotions.

The head-hopping especially during intimate scenes took a bit of getting used to, but the last 30% is really positive (except for anyone who is a parent, put yourself in Dot and Ron’s shoes and try and deal with the avalanche of personal information both their daughters dump on them
In that one dinner, and I have a ton of respect for them.)

Overalll, in the middle of meh to good. I never really felt the passion of the author that she needed to tell this story to us. It read like a recipe for a WLW romance. Satisfying, but ultimately full of empty calories.

My rating: 3.5 stars

Likeable and strong characters in Captain Ava and Mia who are both very much attracted with each other (no rush with declaration of ILY though).

Both have issues and in this story, they both are recovering alcoholic and we get to read all their struggles and how they coped. Not much of an angsty plot but the struggles they faced are angsty enough.

Very well written and one I so thoroughly enjoy reading.

I absolutely loved this book. I loved the story line, loved the characters and the pace was perfect.

Ava is a Pilot (Captain) and Mia is a Senior Purser for the same airline and this is how they met. It was instant attraction with both from the beginning. Both are battling an addiction that we later find out is the same addiction.

I could really kick myself for leaving it so long to read this.

Great read and I highly recommend reading it. You will not be disappointed.

When I first dove into lesfic 7 months ago, Lise Gold was one of the first authors I discovered that I really liked. I loved the exotic locations, well researched (Lise says she often travels to experience first-hand what she writes about) and mostly fairly low angst; whether the romance is slow burn or insta-lust, the relationship grows and deepens naturally, without anything that feels like a forced rift. This is the 10th book I've read by Lise. 11, if you include Madeleine Taylor, the pen name she uses for erotica.

Mia is a senior purser (flight attendant in charge of the entire cabin crew on a flight) on an Emirati airline. Ava is a captain, newly hired by that same airline. Both women have worked hard to achieve their current positions. Ava, at 37, is a younger captain than many male 1st and 2nd officers. When Ava and Mia are assigned to the work the same flight from London to Dubai, each immediately Notices the other. But, even assuming they are on the same "team" (they are), how to proceed? At best, they only are scheduled to fly together every two weeks or so. Eventually, after a London to New York flight on which a tragedy occurs, they are shocked to find each other in a place both had fled to for solace - an AA meeting - discovering, in the process a secret that they each shared but had carefully hidden from literally everybody else in their lives. Over time, they each learn that the other is exactly the pillar of support that they each need in their lives.

Even aside from the intriguing well-described locations - London, Cambridge, New York, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur - this book is a sympathetic look at addiction and recovery, forgiveness, and "coming out" to friends and families in other ways than the usual meaning of that phrase. The two MCs are wonderful, caring, strong, women, the secondary characters were well drawn, the developing love is sincere and believable. There is some angst, but it is plot-driven and understandable - even if good decisions were not necessarily made. But all ends up well, and everybody - and every relationship - is much stronger as a result.

This is one of my new favorites by this author. I think Southern Roots - and maybe The Scent of Rome - do it for me better, but, honestly, Lise Gold can do no wrong, in my eyes.

I absolutely love this book. The characters are creatively written and very believable. I loved how the romance grew between Mia and Ava with only small bumps along the way.

After reading four of her books and loving all of them, I can say Lise Gold became one of my favorite authors quickly.
I love pretty much everything about this book - the writing style, Mia and Ava, the aviation theme, their story and the places they go to.

Touching journey of love

“I don’t need anything from you right now. I just want to be there for you when you need me.”

“She wanted it to be her secret for just a little bit longer. It was nice to have a secret that was positive, for once.”

“Well, you know, you meet someone, and you think they’re hot. And then they turn out to be funny, intelligent and kind too. And then on top of that, there seems to be some kind of vibe where you just understand each other on all levels.”

Two women bearing the scars from their 'young & dumb' days, finding a love in each other that overcomes & heals the damages & pains of the past.

I wish you could do half stars. I thought this was a solid 3.5 stars - benefit of rounding up this time. I think I just needed the twists to be a bit more twisty. I needed to go deeper into the highs and lows of the story and the characters. It’s a good story, with a good setting and solid characters but you get more in setting description than you get emotional depth. I just needed that extra oomph.

Some books are meant to be read, not heard. They are meant to be experiences and visualised by the reader. The tones of the characters, the textures of their relationship are best experienced reading. This is certainly one of them.

I don't even know where to start with my review this time. I really loved the characters. They were so indepth. I could feel their struggle. It deals with the issue of staying sober and how difficult that can be at times. The characters were all very well written and defined. I felt like I really got to know the main characters. The struggle to stay sober was dealt with with compassion and was realistic. The sex scenes were hot! The narrator did a great job. She had a number of voices and accents to do and she did them quite well. I will be listening to this one again!

Omg! This was amazing (even though I had to google what a purser was)!! I could go on and on about the battle for each other, the mental battle they both fight for their sobriety every day, the anxiety of dealing with family and friends and their difficult jobs they both manage so wonderfully- but none of it would be possible without Lise’s amazing writing. While I’ll admit some non-US lingo and spelling annoys me a little at times, it wasn’t enough to make me turn away from this book and the exotic locations were wonderful in the book! The sex is beautifully written and honest and their love is deep and true. The time it took for me to read this was my own issues, not issues with the book! It was fun and I feel so lucky to have gotten to read this!!

This is a fantastic story with tremendous depth of character, wonderful character development, brilliant chemistry between the leading ladies, and some of the most breathtakingly beautiful romantic moments I've read in quite a while. Highly recommended.

Mia and Ava work in the same airline. Mia is a senior purser, Ava is a pilot. They feel attracted to each other from the very first moment they meet on a flight from London to Dubai. It's not until they meet in an unexpected place in New York that they realize they have something painful in common. And it is here when their friendship, and maybe something else, start to develop more deeply.
They have struggles in life. It is something they have to deal with all their life and they find comfort in each other. We can read some funny moments but there are quite a few heartbreaking ones too. Everybody plays an important part in the story because they all give what they can and have to Mia and Ava.
It is not just “girl meets girl, girl falls in love with girl”. There is more to be said here. It's the support, the strength and the love they give each other.
I enjoyed the story, the dialogues, the places they visited were really good described. And I loved the romance and the love between the two main characters.
And because I love a good romance, I highly recommend this book.

A book that gave me great pleasure in reading. The theme inside the characters is real as well as relapses can happen, it is a constant struggle. The development of the characters was solid as well as the story. It was one of those books that I liked how it ended, it had a special touch.
