I am not reading this book page by page because... well it is a cookbook, not a work of fiction. Importantly, I purchased the book because it has a week-long menu of recipes that I thought would make it easy to kick start my new diet. Also, I am the type of poor cook who has had my blender stored for over 10 years. Suffice to say that I am the "Beginner" cook that this book was designed for. Ultimately, I've only made about six of the 85 recipes in the book. However, despite being a beginner I have been pleasantly surprised at the recipes' ease and tastiness. I plan on making many more recipes (with the use of my no-longer-dusty blender).
I never can find a silver bullet, including this cookbook. I'm a vegetarian who occasionally eats fish and lives with a somewhat-picky 18 year old. Both my parents had dementia, so I'm doing my best to address that via my diet. There is a good info here, some nice guidance, but the cookbook has chicken and beef, and many of the vegetarian recipes have tofu, which my daughter doesn't like. So the search continues.
That being said, the recipe for the fish tacos is super easy and absolutely delicious, so that, along with clear recommendations on particular foods to eat, made this purchase worth it.
As a physician, I know what I SHOULD be doing for the most part, however, we all need constant nudges to keep us headed in the right direction. My family has a strong history of Alzheimer's dementia and with many risk factors, it is something I fear. I picked up this book hoping for insight into the Mind diet, as this diet is new to me. This was a very informative book. I already make some of the recipes, but there were quite a few I plan on adding. I also found the author knowledgeable about the different lifestyles (Mediterranean, DASH Diet, etc) and what is truly needed to have a healthier life. I also teach that lifestyle change is needed, not just a quick diet. Thanks for another needed nudge along my wellness journey.
I guess the book is good. It certainly has some good info about what should be eaten to maintain brain health but there isn’t much detail or data about what it talks about. A very “surface” book. As far as some the recipes are concerned, there are some recipes neither of us would ever even think of eating. They sound gross! Like black bean sweet potato burgers! Barf! I’m by no means a huge meat eater but if I’m going to have a burger, it’s going to be a real burger!
I appreciate the 7-Day Kickstart Plan and the links to blank charts to help me track using these new recipes as I try them and make adjustments to family recipes and menus.
