Jij bent awesome! Vind je veerkracht en leef doelbewust

Rate this book

Hey Goodreads peeps,

Pass me a drink. Let's chill on the ripped couch at the back. I love this place. Book lovers are my favorite people. (And my favorite lovers.)

My name is Neil Pasricha (pass-REACH-ah) and I'm the New York Times / #1 int'l (blah blah blah!) bestselling author of ten books on living an intentional life including THE BOOK OF AWESOME (gratitude), THE HAPPINESS EQUATION (happiness), TWO-MINUTE MORNINGS (habits), and the poorly-titled YOU ARE AWESOME (resilience.) My books are published in a lot of languages I can't read and sold a couple million more copies than anyone was expecting.

My background? Well, trust me: Nobody expected me to be writer. Least of all me. My parents aren't jazz trumpet players and watercolorists who raised me in Manhattan. They're hardcore Indian immigrants from Punjab and Nairobi who arrived in Canada scraping to get by. I was supposed to be a doctor! That was the life plan. But after my wife left me and my best friend took his own life in my late 20s I started a blog to cheer myself up. That blog was called 1000awesomethings.com and basically turned into everything else I've done and am doing.

If you want to hang out without social media algorithms in between us (no offence, algorithms! please don't punish my search results!) then join the thousands and thousands of good-hearted kindred spirits globally who get my newsletters. I put a lot of work into my newsletters -- they're sort of my weird digital babies -- and they contain my book recommendations, my new articles, my podcasts, and, of course, my daily awesome things (which I've been writing for 15 years now!). Sign up at www.neil.blog/newsletters

Hit me up if you wanna be friends! I love this clunky old site because it feels like my old hometown library somehow.

Shall we both get back to reading now?

XOXOXO

Neil

Are you supposed to review your own books on here? What's the etiquette? Who decides? Do you give yourself three out of five stars to be all humble since one star would be kind of like why did you write the stupid book in the first place then and five stars would be like oh yeah buddy we'll see about that?

I've read several of this author's inspiring books. This is yet another great addition to your library: turn to it when you've had a rough day. Don't let everyday failures or even major failures keep you down forever is the take away from this one. Highly recommended and a quick read.

I like Neil and I like his message of positivity and his online articles and his 1000 Awesome Things blog but I feel like I've already read most of this book in excerpts online. I have a pretty big stack of books to get through so I don't think I need to finish this one after skimming it and seeing a lot of familiar content. His writing is very playful and poetic, sort of reminds me a bit of Dr Seuss without the made up words.

As self help books go, I didn't quite feel the flow from chapter to chapter, though did enjoy how personal it was. It maybe is better, at least for me, consumed as a series of standalone articles.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am so glad that I finally got around to reading this book! This was my first time reading a book by Neil Pasricha and I already know that I want to pick up his other books. He has a way of providing useful tips while also being truthful.

The fact that he tells it like it is, makes his tips that more useful. It's not like other self-help books where they paint this perfect picture and then give you these unrealistic tips. No. Pasricha explains the backstory and where each of the tips came from. Whether it be a mistake, a lesson learned from his mom or dad, a divorce, a unique body deformation, whatever it is, it is real and personal to Pasricha somehow. And I really respect him for sharing these stories with us.

The story that really stood out to me was the one from his scholarship donor that was apart of the Harvard School of Business, where he told Pasricha "Find small ponds so you can be the big fish." What an interesting perspective; and for a college student wanting a job in a business related field it was something I had never thought about. Of course we want to work for the biggest and best companies, but we are all competing for those jobs, where we wouldn't do much work. Why not take the risk and be the big fish in the small pond and bring a business up from bankruptcy. It's a difficult job but it was interesting advice.

I also really enjoyed the beginning and end of this book. It started with Pasricha giving us our first tip based on the life story of his mom. I'm not going to reveal any of it because I believe it needs to be revealed when reading the book. But then the book ends with our last tip based from Pasricha's Dad's life. He began and ended with his parents and them middle was for us to learn about him. I really enjoyed this format and getting to know about him and his parents.

Overall I did really enjoy this books; the tips were actually useful and I feel like I can and will apply them to my own life.

I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was the most loving and surprisingly empowering self-help book I’ve ever picked up. For some reason, self-help books have rarely hit home for me. I find they usually go in one of two ways: either they tend to be hyper-idealistic while conveniently ignoring the innumerable factors that could prevent one from dropping everything and “following your dreams!”…. or they’re on the other side of the spectrum where they sort of slap you in the face and tell you, “Everything preventing you from being where you want to be is YOUR fault. Here are all the things you’re doing wrong and how you can finally get your act together and start being productive.” Neither of these are particularly helpful approaches, and in these cases it doesn’t feel like they’re truly trying to understand me but rather trying to sell their own “success model" and preach it at me.

Turns out what I really needed was a little book by the name of You Are Awesome. From page one, Neil guides us through a number of strategies designed to instill more forgiveness and self-love in ourselves, all of it circling back to the main theme of this book: we are all works in progress. Nothing perfect happens overnight. Everything takes time to grow and develop into the best version of itself, including us. Every misstep, every setback, every crappy job or failed class or project flop—all of it is a necessary step in our growth and gradually getting closer to where and who we want to be. To emphasize this, Neil takes us through his life and his own series of setbacks, highlighting how all of them have both shaped him as a person and helped him in getting closer to where he knew he was always meant to be. This, to me, is such a positive, inspiring perspective on both life and us as people, and Neil, in typical fashion, is extraordinarily encouraging and uplifting every step of the way. I mean, this is the same guy who wrote The Book of Awesome and its sequel, The Book of Even More Awesome, both of which I loved. So it’s no surprise that he would be triply awesome in writing a self-help book.

But I cannot stress this enough: this book was so helpful to me, and I feel fortunate that it came into my life just when I needed it most. Equal parts reassuring and productive, You Are Awesome allows us to be forgiving and patient toward ourselves while also giving us the tools we need to build self-confidence and finally take that leap toward positive change in our lives. And when all seems lost, always finding a way to add a dot-dot-dot.

This is how all self-help books need to be. All other self-help writers: take note.

I was immediately drawn into You Are Awesome because of how relatable the writing is. Neil Pasricha is charismatic and resilient and the writing is conversational like you are talking with a good friend.

Everyone can relate to failure but how we react to it can change our paths entirely and keep us moving forward. Every” misstep” is a chance to assess, learn and then move up and onward. I love the balance of personal stories, accessible writing, and strategies that are approachable for everyone.

Pasricha writes with compassion and proactivity and reminds us that we are all works in progress. Sometimes self-help books can help you feel heard but not really have a plan, or make you feel like you are being talked down to and make you just feel worse. You Are Awesome contains straightforward steps that make you feel less alone but also help you move FORWARD.

Resilence is a skill and often the people that are most resilient aren’t ones that have had the easiest path in life but are the ones that use those bumps in the road to learn and grow. Positively doesn’t mean you don’t have struggles, it means using perspective to take what you can from them and continue on.

I loved this book so much and I know it is one that I will refer back to again and again.

Thank you to Gallery Books for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

Neil borrows from many people I've already read/heard (Tim Ferriss, etc.) so the ideas are not new. However, I appreciate how he distills down to 3 questions:
1.)Will this matter on my deathbed?
2.) Can I do something about it?
3.)Is this a story I'm telling myself?

And also has 3 journal prompts:
1.)I will let go of...
2.) I am grateful for...
3.)I will focus on...

This book was fantastic and best of all, it made me feel awesome. I felt like Neil Pasricha was speaking to me personally, encouraging me to embrace my failures and to look pass them and move forward: ‘When you’re there, when you’re stewing in the shock of failure and loss, when you’re convinced you’re stuck, when you’re convinced there’s no way forward, just remember: there’s a staircase you’re not seeing. Trust that it’s there, right in front of you, and that it leads to exciting new places. Have the courage to believe in this one thing that you can’t see.”

I’m off to listen to his Ted talk and to practice resilience and intentional living now.

This book offers 9 mindset shifts that will help you cope with failure, keep going when the going gets tough, learn and adapt faster, let go of worries and shift your focus on what you can change, and make time for yourself and your passions.

Since implementing these strategies, I've seen a marked difference in how I think about and approach all kinds of situations now. I especially like that Pasricha emphasizes the importance of failure and makes failure seem less shameful. Too often we're told that mistakes and failures are bad but it's these experiences that actually help us grow and become more resilient.

This is another positive book with messages of gratitude and moving forward despite challenges. The author uses his own personal examples of failures (opportunities for learning) and his own struggles (quitting a job after being part of a performance improvement plan) yet he was resilient and kept going leading to his acceptance to Harvard and his wildly successful blog which led to a number of books.

Having met him at a conference, he is inspiring, positive and enthusiastic. Readers can take from his suggestions and head towards gratitude, acceptance and moving forward.

I am torn by this book: on the one hand it contains great lessons, is a pleasure to read and easy to relate to. On the other hand it is sort of mostly empty really: there must be at least 50 close to blank pages in this book and the print is huge. I think the main ideas could really be summarized in a couple of pages only.

I picked up this book because it was highly recommended (can't remember from where). I knew this book was meant to be for kids, but I just wanted to see what's the big deal since the review is very positive on here. After reading it, I'd say it is worth the hype.

In terms of material, I don't think there is anything new here. But it is presented well, especially considering the intended audience are kids. The whole book was an easy read, all the key messages conveyed clearly whilst in fun ways with stories.

The main teaching from the book is to have a growth mindset, that seeing failure as opportunities to get better, practice will make everyone better at something and identify marginal gains with a plan to help yourself improve. All very valid, and appropriate advice for children, maybe even for a lot of adults. Now would I have read this book when I was a kid? Probably not, I hated reading this sort of books back then.

This book was actually really good. It offered a lot of perspective changes that I think everyone should read about. We are programmed as humans to react certain ways and tell ourselves false statements just because of environments and passed events, and this book really shows you how to switch that mindset to be more confident and just at ease with ur life

Would you fail your way to success? or remain a failure? There are so many people who fail at reaching success and that’s fine, but what’s not fine is if you don’t get up and keep moving forward. You Are Awesome by Neil Pasricha is filled with life-related stories, tips when hardship approaches, and secrets that Neil learned throughout his life.

Everyone hits rock bottom at some point in our lives, but what happens if we get stuck? Neil explains that nothing is over until you give up on it. Also, it is okay not to be perfect. All the mistakes that we experience are setting us up for our future. We must remember that we have the power of choice and we can decide for ourselves. Next, we have the power to re-write our past stories and change them to become new ones, because we’ve already gone through them and know what to avoid. Sometimes it’s okay to lose and fail, cause at the end of failure and loss is only success and winning.

My favorite part in the book is the Self-Practice sections. In these sections, Neil teaches us how to apply and practice the lesson that he explained in that chapter. I love this kind of stuff, I feel that it’s not only knowledge we are receiving, but instructions on how to use it. Overall, I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars, because I believe many readers (Including me) can relate to the things Neil’s gone through and experience.

So, no matter how tough life can get, always remember you have a choice. Your mistakes are just steps to your successful future and it’s okay to lose sometimes. Hope you all enjoy my review of You Are Awesome by Neil Pasricha, thank you.

I grew up with The Book of Awesome and The Book of (Even More) Awesome, so finding and reading You Are Awesome was like meeting a childhood friend who had also grown up and was here to share their life experiences and knowledge. Kind of like watching a movie and having the sequel come out ten years later, the characters aging with you and being relevant to your life experiences.

You Are Awesome is set up with Neil's trademark bite size chapters and subcategories. They are very fun and relaxing to read and it allows for you to put it down and pick it back up easily throughout the day. I appreciate Neil's style of writing, which is loaded with metaphors and detailed examples, kind humour, and the ever-present sprinkle of kind softness that always reminds you that you are awesome (you always were).

As a self help book, You Are Awesome has well structured chapters that focus on key concepts on how to deal with change, failure, and living a more intentional life. The advice and suggestions offered are genuinely helpful and useful. Neil shares many personal stories within the chapters and the personalization helps you connect with him and his experiences, while also helping you feel less alone and lost on your journey.

Thank you, Neil, for showing us that we are awesome, for helping us become more awesome, and for always believing that we are awesome.

You Are Awesome delivers 9 Secrets To Getting Stronger And Living An Intentional Life. So much of this book spoke directly to me. A bit of a wake up call in several areas of my life. The line that really resonated with me was "we have to stick the twig in our own spokes" ... WOW! Yes! We do! There are times where life just gets away from us, becomes chaotic, overwhelming ...

Que - Untouchable Days, a time to disconnect from everything and everyone. How many of us actually do this? I know this is a solid way to accomplish those tasks that we've been leaving on the back burner, but it's also a way to take some time for YOU, just YOU. This time is important, necessary.

If you're looking for a quick, thought provoking read then You Are Awesome needs to be on your TBR.

I personally loved this book and everything in it. This was my first Neil Pasricha book and I feel I require much more. A huge thank you to Simon & Schuster for my review copy!

** I received a free ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. **

This book was really more like 3.5 stars that I rounded up to 4. I'm sure it will be super helpful to some people, but only bits and pieces of this book seemed to apply to me. I was better than "just okay," but I wouldn't necessarily say it was "really good." There's some good tidbits throughout this book, but it seems more geared towards people wanting to start a business/website/professional goal/etc.

This was both enlightening and uplifting in a joyful way. It was light, quick and just an easy read, in more ways than one; one of the best “self-help” books I have ever read. Partway through it, I also listened to one of Pasricha’s TED talks. This man is delivering a message we can all stand to hear.

I wasn't sure at first, the tips seemed very simplistic and just logical. However, I was inspired by Neil's stories and his rawness about his successes and failures. There were many tips I hope to put into practice. The last few lines of the book were powerful and really tied together the whole book. Just keep pushing forward :) Overall, loved it.

A funny, light hearted, and easy-to-read self-help book, You Are Awesome offers some useful advice on how to live a more intentional life. Despite this, at times it felt like the true purpose of the book may have been more about getting another publication in the author’s brand than it was about being a story that genuinely needed to be told.

This book had some good self-help ideas. It's rather short, and some of his examples are a bit whacky in my opinion (if you've read it you know what I'm referring to). But overall, it's good solid advice for navigating a time of change.
