Never Be Safe

Rate this book
Catherine Brewer has a secret to keep.
And Vincent Lemont has a score to settle.
One of them has to lose in this taut, no-frills, edge-of-your-seat suspense thriller.

Catherine is happy and settled with what she always wanted: a loving husband, two cute kids, and a comfortable home. She also has a dangerous secret, a suppressed fragility, and a life about to be torn apart by her own history.

Vincent has just been freed from a long stretch in San Quentin. Memories of his incarceration run riot in his mind. He’s bitter, single-minded, and quite prepared to crush whoever and whatever stands in his path. He’s also way, way smarter than anyone gives him credit for.

If this is your first Ray Backley book, it won't be your last. It has the 'Just one more chapter' factor.
This story isn't one of the predictable tropes and isn't your average run of the mill suspense thriller. Cath has a nice life, the whole chocolate box existence until a phone call telling her the man she helped put in San Quentin prison years ago is now out and on a mission. From that point on make sure you have your phone on silent, snacks to hand and a comfy seat, because you won't want to be disturbed. Sometimes it's hard to get into a story when so much is going on in the real world, but this one is a surprisingly easy read for the depth of the plot. It'll keep you in your seat wanting to know what comes next until then last page once the scene setting at the start is done and the story kicks in. I was rooted to the spot reading with the suspense, don't even try holding out for a stopping point, there isn't one, lol.
It's a refreshing change to read a thriller that isn't either a serial killer storyline or special ops plot which seems to be the majority of the books that have recently flooded this genre. Thoroughly enjoyable with enough pace to keep you turning pages long into the night and isn't part of a series, which is also nice.... no having to rely on knowledge from previous books or having to worry that you need to buy another book to finish the story.
I was given an advanced copy of this book. Everything I've written is my own unbiased opinion, and this his a totally voluntary review because who wouldn't want to tell someone about a book they've really enjoyed?

For this genre, a great book. Read in a couple of settings because you just can't set it aside. Not a formula thriller, kept you guessing throughout.

The author begins with Bonnie getting out of prison after 13 years, Cath getting notified and remembering what happened in the past (setting up the dominoes).
As Cath makes the decision on how she is going to keep her family safe and Bonnie heads to Pasadena (the dominoes are tipped). Cath makes decisions that are both creative, creepy and that of a paranoid mind. She is a woman who has been on the edge for 13 years and now her worst fear has come to fruition. Bonnie is an angry, cruel and diabolical man. He has been stewing for 13years. Unfortunately, he is smarter than the police.
I wish the judge Dan was a stronger man.
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat and biting your nails.
Another great read from Ray Backley.
