Sisters, Caitland and Cassidy take the ferry one summer night. Under the light of the full moon, the fog rolls in and tiny, glowing lights surround them on the upper deck of the boat. "Fireflies!" Caitland whispers in trembling excitement. "Get them!" Then they begin to make one of the biggest mistakes of their lives.

This is a super cute children's illustrated book that puts a twist on fireflies. The illustrations are nice and simple, without being boring. Without a doubt little girls are likely to adore this; but I would definitely purchase it for boys as well as fairies (aka fireflies) don't have to be 'girly'. And certainly the dark and night are of intrigue to everyone. The language here is good for early readers and it would make an adorable and appropriate bedtime story as it takes place at night and isn't too exciting before sleep.
Please note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is an honest and unbiased review.
This is a nice story with a surprising twist at the end. The bond between the sisters is well-written and I like how they care for the creatures in the story instead of torturing them or killing them. The ending of the story is a bit abrupt. The book is good for beginner chapter readers as the content and language are very basic and easy to understand. The illustrations add to the charm. The main thing I didn't like was the section on "Fun Facts about Water Faeries" towards the end. Facts makes it sound like the trivia provided are true. It is a misnomer. I can understand facts being provided about animals or plants or humans but I really didn't understand the purpose of including facts about imaginary creatures. My rating: 3.5
I received an advance review copy of the book from NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

What a beautiful story! About two sisters and their parents who are going to visit a relative. But Caitland loves to collect bugs, and as they are on a ferry the mom suggests it is time to let the ladybugs go. That is done with no issues, but as the sisters finish letting the ladybugs go, they notice beautiful lights which they assume are fireflies but upon a closer look after catching a few they notice they are not gireflies, but faeries! What happens next? I will let you find out! No spoilers here thanks!
What a delightful book filled with magic! My son stopped in his tracks when we reached the page with the picture of the jar :) He really enjoyed it and I’d definitely recommend it!
I have this book in my classroom and the girls are always fighting over it. It's a great beginning reader book. I like the part at the end with interesting facts about fairies.
My daughter absolutely loves this book. I've read it so many times I'm quite tired of it myself. She loves fairies and magic and this book checks all the boxes.
Magical and captivating, Fireflies tells the story of the enchantment of a ferry at night time and the secrets of two sisters.
Pondering into the land of ‘what ifs’, Fireflies asks if those bright creatures we see flying in the sky are actually fireflies or instead something entirely more magical. The pictures are quite cute and bring the story to life although I do think they could have had a bit more finesse.
The story is quite simplistic in plot line and is more of a suggestion that will get children seeing the potential magic in the world rather than anything particularly happening. As such, it does lack pace in places. However, it is a good book for firing up the imagination and creativity of our little ones. I also liked the personal relevance of the story for the author as explained at the end of the story; the additional facts included at the end were also a nice feature. Overall, the language is chosen well for the target audience although there are places where the punctuation could be a little tighter.
The Book Dragon reviewed this magical little tale on behalf of the author and believes it is a strong 3 star novel.
Lovely story about the joy of discovering and finding bugs and looking at them in a jar but make sure you release them after a few hours... I loved that message. But this book has something more... a magical element that made this book not the typical bug book. I loved the storytelling in this book and the beautiful illustrations. I will definitely read to my class and have some predictions before we read and I am sure some fun conversations after this story. Great read!
This is a magical story about fairies the girls accidentally caught on a ferry to Halifax! I just took the ferry to Halifax last Summer, but I did not see fairies that night. Too bad! :) The story caught my attention from the beginning to the end. I really want to know what will happen next to those petals. Will they turn to something else? The illustrations of the book are so beautiful that they brought me to the scenes.
This is a lovely story about an adventurous girl that likes to collect bugs. One night when she fills her jar with fireflies she is in for a big surprise! Great for fairy loving kids!
This is a story about sisters and the magic of a summer night on a ferry. They share a forever memory. It’s a perfect story to encourage our children’s imaginations.
This was such a cute story about 2 sisters who encountered magical faeries. Perfect for children who love to use their imagination. Who knows, maybe faeries really do exist!
This was such a beautiful story about 2 sisters who encountered magical faeries. Perfect for children who love to use their imagination. My daughter is 6 a she really enjoyed this book I highly recommend. This book is full of phenomenal illustrations
This is an enchanting story with really neat illustrations. It is the journey of two sisters to collect fireflies. What a surprise they capture instead... My 7-year-old daughter really enjoyed it.
This is such a sweet, whimsical story about a girl and her love or should I say fascination with beautiful faeries. This story reminded me of my childhood years when my friends and I would attempt to collect “lighting bugs” that’s what we called them. Sweet.
I loved the premise of this little Fantasy. The sisters are curious collectors who got more than they bargained for. The petals left behind left a magical feeling after reading this story.
Another interesting and creative story with lovely illustrations by author/illustrator Carolyn Watson-Dubisch! Two girls catch "fireflies" aboard a boat ride, but discover that they're so much more. Kids will delight in this magical tale!

I loved this book illustrations. It brought me back to the books I read as a child. Wonderfully crafted story, had me engaged, will work great with kids as well. At the end, author includes fun facts that were an amazing surprise. Would highly recommend this sweet book.
Fireflies is an enchanting, magical, beautiful, creative, energetic, adorable, and imaginative read! This book is one for the nature lovers and fairie lovers. The illustrations are stunning and it is clear the main characters admire nature. This book is whimsical and magical!
The story follows to sisters taking a night ferry to visit their aunt. The younger sister Caitland loves collecting bugs. She only keeps them for a few hours to look at them with a magnifying glass then she releases them. After observing her lady bugs for a bit the girls mother asks them to go up together and release them. After the release, the girls see what they think are fireflies and make a huge mistake.
If you and your kids have been missing traveling, I highly recommend this as a bedtime or anytime read. A water ferry ride to Nova Scotia uncovers a mystery of the night sky and sea. Lovely storytelling with kind and curious characters. The illustrations have an edgy, rustic quality but capture the essence of the story nicely. This tale of two sisters water encounter with fairies is a delight! Perfect story to capture the imagination of future generations.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for the chance to read this. All opinions are my own.
This was a great book for kids. It's a fun story about two sisters catching fireflies and finding a surprise. It also has beautiful illustrations. I really enjoyed this and would gladly read it to children!
A story of two sisters on a night voyage across the water in Eastern Canada, The twist to this story really took me by surprise. I think kids will love this book, the magic and mystery is really engaging.

I have no doubt that some people will like this story that mixes realism with some magic, but I have some issues with it.
The illustrations are nice enough, although the railings on the top deck seem quite dangerous - very wide gaps between them so that freaked me out a bit. As of now, the children could go through the bars and land in the water. And they are alone at night on the top deck. I know it's just a story, but I wish this was drawn a bit more accurately.
Another slight issue I have is the jar the bugs are held in has no holes in the lid, not something I would like to encourage kids to do.
Lastly, the story really needs some editing, too many errors make it distracting to read for anyone who cares about teaching kids correct grammar, even though the errors are fairly small I notice them and there are a few.
Finally, at the end, there are some facts about fairies, one of each is a warning not to annoy the fairies because while they can save you from drowning by kissings you, when angered they may make you drown, and there is a picture of a drowning girl. I can't say I like this picture. There is something very sinister about it - not exactly a perfect picture to see just before dozing off.
