Shadows
Shadows follows the story of Ansel Love, a young woman who has the ability to see shadows emanating from people, but she's unable to determine their true intentions. She began seeing the shadows at her sixteenth birthday, and now at the age of twenty-six, Ansel has yet to know their true nature until she stumbles upon a private tech center setting up shop in her city. When Ansel applies for a job with Jollette at their new state of the art tech center, she finds out that there's more to her gift than she initially thought. Determined to get to the bottom of why she sees these enigmatic figures, she sets out on a journey of discovery that's shrouded in mystery, conspiracy and truth that's stranger than she could have ever imagined

the allegory here is INSANE
if you don’t “get” the references to “energy”, “shadows” and how they’re both coveted and exploited by those that desire them, you’re missing the most important point of this book. Ansel thinks she’s been “cursed”, but it’s a little deeper than that as is Vidale’s interest in her & the whole Jollette project. altogether, this is one of the most subtle and incisive looks into the African-America experience that I’ve ever read.
