Her Christmas Phoenix

Rate this book
All she wants for Christmas is a sizzling hot shifter... and a flock of movie-quoting penguins.

Avery loves working in Antarctica, but when she winds up spending the holidays alone at her research station, it's hard to find any Christmas cheer. Then there's the cascade of unwanted--and unclothed--photos guys on her dating site keep sending her. (Of all the things in the world to deck with boughs of holly…)

It's been a rough year. She just wanted something merry and bright.

He's her perfect gift. She's his perfect match.

Ice phoenix Emmett Frost is used to being alone for the holidays… and the non-holidays. He's the guardian of all Antarctica, and that's a duty he'll never give up. So that means being lonely, right? No one else would want to spend their life at the South Pole. At least he can talk to all the Antarctic animals... although turning the penguins into big movie fans might have been a mistake. (Who knew they'd wind up so obsessed with Alfred Hitchcock?)

Then he meets Avery, a smart, curvy penguin researcher who blows his mind. Emmett's just supposed to keep her company for Christmas, but soon he wants to keep her company forever. She's his true mate, and he has to figure out how to tell her—and how to start believing he might deserve her.

It would all be easier if they didn't have to deal with opinionated penguins and a rampaging polar bear that doesn't seem to realize it's on the wrong continent. But then, the holidays are busy for everyone…

Another great story

I love this stories where shifters find their perfect mate, even when it seems impossible.  This one is even harder, because it takes place in the Antartic.  With so few people actually living there, what are the odds?  Avery is a scientist studying penguins in the Antartic, while Emmett is an ice phoenix, a mythical being that is supposed to keep balance and care over the Antartic.  He thinks he is destined to be alone, but then, he finds his mate.
As usual in these cases, with a shifter and a human, there are some difficulties explaining everything, there are fears of rejection and a lot of what ifs, but since they are perfect for each other, everything turns out just perfect.  There is some drama, bad guy that adds some intensity to the story, but in general is very simple.
I like light, feel good romances like this where everything works out and everyone is happy, makes me feel good and give me something happy to desestress.  A good book after a hard day or week is just the kind of medicine the doctor prescribed.

Penguins have a one-sided feud with Alfred Hitchcock because of the movie "The Birds." This particular bit of information is exactly why I love Zoe Chant's books. Sweet (and hot) romance combined with quirky humor makes for a great story. I laughed out loud more than once while reading it.

There was a LOT to like about this book. Definitely one of my favorite Zoe Chant books so far.

I do have to say, I'm not a fan of how they handled men being inappropriately sexual on dating apps. Back when I used online dating websites in my early 20s, I found it deeply upsetting when I was out there looking for love and looking to connect with another human being, and all I got in response were crass sexual messages. My incredibly loneliness was met with "Hey baby, you do anal?" It was horribly dehumanizing. And while I used to try to explain to men exactly why this was so dehumanizing and upsetting, I've since come to understand that any man who thinks that behavior is acceptable is a misogynist who believes women exist to be fucked. We aren't really human to men like that.

I have a lot of terrible negative emotions surrounding this aspect of online dating, even though it happened to me many years okay.

So I didn't care for it being treated like a running gag throughout this book.

It's not a gag. It's not a joke. Misogyny is not a joke. Treating women like they are holes that exist to be fucked by men is not a joke.

Chant writes this behavior in the story in a negative light, but she still treats the issue flippantly. All the jokes about "festive dicks" ignore the very real trauma and pain that aggressive male sexual behavior can cause.

The other issue that I had with this book was the sub-plot with the polar bear. We get a glimpse into the polar bear POV and the only person he is ruminating on is the ice phoenix. When we find out later about his connection to Avery this earlier POV makes no sense. He has a personal connection TO HER not to the ice phoenix. In the polar bear's POV scenes, it almost comes across like he's only going to attack Avery to gain the upper hand with the ice phoenix. I think Chant just didn't want readers to guess who the polar bear is too quickly. But that isn't clever writing. It's actually pretty sloppy writing.
Also, when we typically get a shifter POV (such as Emmet's POV in this very book), there is still a connection to their human self. The polar bear POV was far more animalistic. It almost seems like the polar bear really IS a confused wild animal. I think she wrote his POV so much more primally so that people wouldn't figure out he was a shifter. But again, if you just write shit that doesn't make sense, then it's not really a good way to keep readers from guessing the twist. Sure, if you just write irrational shit, people probably won't guess the twist. It doesn't make it good writing or a good twist.

Now onto what I liked:

1) Emmet is a virgin......ohmygoooood

I know I have a problem. I know there's probably some deep-seeded psycho-social bullshit attached to trauma. But also, fuck I love an inexperienced man. And as far as coping goes that doesn't seem to be all that harmful, so I'm mostly okay with it.

Not only is Emmet a virgin, but he's nervous and bumbling and sort of bashful and she has to reassure him several times that he's doing a good job.

Ah! This was basically custom-written for me. Throw in a "good boy" and call a day. Stick a fork in me, I'm done.

Loved the sex scene and loved that we get a bashful inexperienced man.

2) The setting
Antarctica is a really cool place to set a romance and Chant really brings the setting to life vividly and makes it a focal point of the story.

3) The penguins who quoted movie lines and hated Alfred Hitchcock.
Need I say more?

Altogether, while this book had some issues, it was a whimsical and sweet Christmas shifter read. Some of the writing is clunky, but that's to be expected with a Zoe Chant novel.

I always describe them as book junk food.
As far as book junk food goes though, these are top tier. Up there with cool ranch Doritos and 7-11 chili dogs.

This is a good shifter romance, with a likable couple. I liked both Avery and Emmett a lot, and was glad when they found their HEA. They were perfect for each other. This one gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded up to 4 stars.

I liked that Zoe came up with a new type of phoenix, an ice phoenix. It was a creative take on shifters, and the story was entertaining. I also liked that Avery wasn't turned off or frightened when she first saw Emmett's shifter form -- she just automatically recognized him for what he was.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Although Her Christmas Phoenix is a stand-alone title right now, I’m curious about the other guardian phoenixes that patrol and guard other areas — so, I’m hoping that this idea gets expended, even if it’s only for the holidays.

Emmett and Avery quickly captured my imagination. The remote beauty of Antarctica shines through quite clearly, but also the isolation, the loneliness of the paths this couple has chosen for their life’s work – each by choice, even if it seems that Emmett could have refused, it isn’t in his personality to do so. I chuckled throughout at the antics of the penguins we meet and one very special fox. And there is such unique vileness to the villain here that can make your skin crawl very easily.

While I liked and admired Avery, it was Emmett’s sense of innocence that really captured me in Her Christmas Phoenix. The danger they are in is so well played out, beneath the surface, merely hinted at throughout the majority of their story – but when it hit there was never a doubt of how much trouble and danger this couple was in.

I enjoyed myself immensely in this world, and I do hope that we will get to discover another guardian phoenix at some point in time. Avery and Emmett’s story will capture not only your imagination but your emotions as well… and give your chuckle responses a very good workout.

I own a Kindle edition of Her Christmas Phoenix.

Surprises!!!

Avery Winslow loved working in Antarctica as a penguin researcher but she always ended up alone for the holidays at her work station. She just wanted something to make her merry this year. She never expected what fate had in store for her.

Emmett Frost, an Ice Phoenix who was used to being alone all year long. He was the guardian of all Antarctica. That's a duty he would never give up even if it meant he would be lonely his whole life. No one would want to live in South Pole forever.

Avery was Emmett's mate, he just needed to find away to tell her and pray that she wouldn't run away from him. Cause he wanted her in his life til the end of time.

Loved how they had each other's backs, they trusted one another like they've known each other for years. The lovebirds had to face many obstacles before they hot their HEA.

HER CHRISTMAS PHOENIX is the fourth book in Zoe Chant's SHIFTERS FOR CHRISTMAS series. It was a wonderful read. Two thumbs up and a recommendation for you guys to grab yourselves a copy!

Avery and Emmett Frosty Love Tryst! 3.75***** Spoiler Alert!

Emmett Reed Frost finally met his life mate Zoologist Avery, his Sun, and together they cheered each other up during a lonely Christmas week at her Antarctic research station. He revealed his Ice- Phoenix shifter abilities as they battled and won over sociopathic polar bear shifter/ scamming scientist Rich Cowan, as he attempted to kill Avery. Theirs a bittersweet HEA.

Great characters with the second POC in a ZC novel, after Prince Joe. The plot was, however, predictable that Rich was a shifter as he walked out into a snow storm....really! The theme of that special someone to complete you is out there in the world, while a lovely thought only spelt a tragic ending for this phoenix/human couple. The sagest book quote, " Never date someone who would make a bad ex .. ", while true but who has the foresight to follow this bit of advice. An interesting read!

I totally enjoy Zoe Chant's shifter romances but this one was one of my absolute favorites. I love the Christmas timing but even more, I loved the characters- Emmett, the ice phoenix and Avery, the penguin researcher meet in Antarctica, where Emmett is a guardian. There is love, action and intrigue. I adored the interplay between the characters. Truly, I hope we get to learn more about the other guardian phoenixes because the story idea is also such an interesting one (the phoenixes protect parts of the world- Emmett protects Antarctica and the ice world.). And I hope that the rest of the books have such charming supportive characters like wacky penguins and a stuff but loyal arctic fox. This book was wonderful.

Fun and quick Christmas read!

I love reading Zoe Chant and this is such a fun book with lots of surprises. I originally studied zoology in college, but there are very few romances that make zoologists the main character! This was so much fun to read. Avery is expecting to be all alone this Christmas, but then she meets Emmett. The whole premise of this story is so original. I have no idea where Zoe Chant gets her ideas but I love them! There is action and fun and some really sweet scenes in here.

The pace is fast and the tone is hopeful with a character oriented storyline that has some action and some steamy scenes. The characters are vivid and engaging. This is a fun, quick pick-me-up Christmas story. Enjoy!

Good

The world-building in this story felt lazy. A phoenix lives in Antarctica, and somehow that magically takes care of the whole continent. He's lonely and bored.

Really? His job is to fly around occasionally and chase the odd tourist who decides seal hunting sounds like a fun summer sport? Was there no Southern phoenix until people came, then there just... was? And governments know and fund this? This doesn't make sense to me.

Emmet and Avery are awkward introverts, and that works for the story. They're cute together, and there are some brilliant moments of humor. The conflict is fine, though I thought the characters should've at least guessed the mystery sooner.

Overall, this story was good, but not outstanding.

Its okay

I really liked the story and the idea of the Guardian Phoenix and although the plot was good and I'd like more on the Phoenix. I'd like to give this a better review because it was well written but the main female character just was off putting for me with all her self doubt and sometime borderline self hatred, that I couldn't get into her side of the story. I understand that when bad things happen guilt can suck you down and depression can kill, but it's a short story and not nearly enough pages to go through a such a shift for me to get on board. I loved Emmett and the penguins where so adorable, that I really wanted to give this a better rating. Its well written and a good story just not great for me I guess.

I loved how all the animals reacted to the Phoenix. His housemates are fantastic. I can just imagine the festive pics that Avery received before she finally gave up and went to meet the mysterious inhabitants of Frostfire. Emmett and Avery were perfect for each other - with their love of the location and the penguins. The penguins, huskies, and fox were great for comic relief and their acute insight of their surroundings. I would love to be at Frostfire for movie night! The story was entertaining and well paced. I put it down but had to pick it up a short while later as I could not wait to finish it.

Die Hard is a Christmas movie! Grab this book and enjoy!

I loved the penguins!!!

Spoiler alert!
Zoe Chant never ceases to amaze me! She started my love of all books related to shifters. Each character has their own uniqueness. But I truly loved Emmett and Avery. They are perfect for each other. Emmett was not your usual alpha male and just projected such goodness and Avery was the best match for him. The penguins were awesome and I foresee a lot of humorous movie watching in the future. 😂 Keep up the fascinating work and thank you for sharing your terrific talent with us!

DNF - Quit at 25%
The story was just not holding my attention. It felt a little simplistic in the writing style, and a little bit predictable. The main characters were a little flat for me, & really didn't give me a feel or any interest in them. I wanted to like this because it was about a Phoenix shifter & Christmas, which sounded interesting.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

A heart warming story

So many things about this story that I enjoyed. The humor of watching movies with penguins and putting up with them quoting from those movies. What a funny image. Not to mention having a pet arctic fox. The image of the dogs getting loose and coming in to warn of a problem was funny. I just really enjoyed the way the story was laid out. So worth the read. Keep on writing Zoe! I love your humor, the environments you take us to and how heart warming your stories are.

Fun read

Great story, easy to read Xmas tale with a twist.
Avery is a scientist who specialises in penguins in an Antarctic research centre. She is fairly certain she will never find the right guy, even using online dating.
Emmett is a guardian shifter for the South Pole who gave up his chance at a normal life when he became the ice Phoenix.
They meet, it’s instant love for him and strangely comfortable for her. Of course there is also a bad guy to make life difficult but the penguins quoting movie lines make it better.

Ice is nice!
I always love Zoe Chant’s books. Always a great and satisfying happily ever after but with a great conflict and buildup within each story.
I loved the twist on the Phoenix being ice and how beautifully detailed he’s depicted. I can’t say enough about how much the animals made this story, especially Vix. The fun and all the unique quirky personalities made this the perfect get away. So happy I was able to get an arc.

Always a good read!

I love reading Zoe Chant. She is my guilty pleasure since no one I know would understand. Yes I need new friends😄 Her Christmas Phoenix is a wonderful love story with a little hardship to remind us that love is never easy but always worth it! I love how though the characters were very different they ended up fitting together so perfectly. I also love how none of it was political. Thanks MS. Chant for a wonderful Christmas Present!

Enjoyable read

This was a very good read and I enjoyed the characters very much. The storyline just seem to move a little slow for me, for some reason. It was pretty obvious who the polar bear was from the very beginning but it just took forever it seems like to reveal that in the storyline. And then the end just seem to...end. It could’ve used an epilogue or just a little more development around the end of the story.

Who knew Antarctica was romantic?

Avery and Emmett get the chance to know each other in a way that shows their personality. They mesh really well. The characters interaction with the artic animals was fun. I will never think of penguins the samr again lol. And of course not everything is perfect but thats what makes it interesting.

Phoenix shines.

I love Phoenixes especially. They rise from ashes usually but guardians are evidently created/born differently.
It took me 3 days to read because life happens. Zoe is one of my favorite authors and I always get her books as soon as possible. This is a wonderfully written story with a new concept for the Phoenix.

Loved it

These Christmas Guardians are always fun, but the concept of an Ice Phoenix guarding the South Pole is delightful. Moving loving penguins and and an Arctic fox. Emmett the Phoenix and Avery his mate overcome a demented polar bear shifter to reach their happy ending. It would be nice to hear more about their life together

Wonderful

Another great book by Zoe Chant. This was a really cute and fun story. I didn't want to put it down. The two main characters are great and I loved the interaction with the Antarctic animals. This book was meant as a stand alone but I can see potential for a series.

Sweet story😘

This is a first review for this book, and I quite enjoyed it, the plot to this storyline was so sweet, well thought out. But my only hope was it had more sexual appeal, the interaction between the characters were a bit dull sometimes. No true passion, and hotness. Quite bland, a lot more of that it would have been 5 stars.

He's had a lonely existence, she doesn't want to be alone for the holidays. Someone is out to get them both. Will she accept what he is? Will they defeat their enemy?

I loved the instant connection between these two, but yet they still took the time to get to know each other. I loved how he had this innocence about him, but he didn't hide how he felt and the fact that his feelings were there. I loved how she took everything in and accepted what was in front of her. Good read!

Funny, sweet romance

This is a quick read with a lot of humor, a sweet romance, and a fantastic set of supporting characters. Well edited, it's a fast, easy read. Perhaps a little too fast, as I'd love too see more of Emmet's companions. I can only hope we see these characters again.

Fantastic Story

I absolutely love all paranormal books and especially those that include dialog between humans and animals. Having just joined the Kindle Reading Group, I've found a New and Favorite Author in Zoe Chant. This book is enchanting and I was memorized by the interaction between the characters... and the animals. Can't wait to read another! I loved this story.

Emmett and Avery are fun characters. The polar bear in Antarctica was an interesting addition. I'm not sure how I feel about it since I figured out where the polar bear came from and waited and waited for the confrontation with Emmett and Avery and the reveal on the polar bear.
The love story between Emmett and Avery is sweet and awkward.
Sex is part of the story.

A feel-good holiday romance

This is absolutely charming! I just love the relationship between Avery and Emmett; it's so evocative, and they are perfect together. The misplaced menace adds conflict and danger, but those movie critic penguins are a riot! Highly recommended for PNR readers.
