A mom ready to do anything for her son. A man determined to win the woman he loves.
Going on Love at First Glance had seemed like such a good idea. She didn’t care about finding Mr. Right. No, Mindy Murray chose the reality TV show for more mercenary reasons. A mom’s gotta do what a mom’s gotta do when it comes to feeding her son.
When Mindy returns to Elnora, the girl from the “wrong side of the island” just wants a chance to rebuild her reputation. Too bad the folks at church don’t practice what the preacher preaches.
Enter Dermott Reilly. The interim boss at Greener Gardens has always had a soft spot for Mindy and her son, but with his new responsibilities, an important garden competition, and a few other concerns, he finds it difficult to prove himself to her.
A tropical storm and a missing child prove that sometimes grace appears in the most unusual ways.
Regaining Mercy concludes the Elnora Island romances of the Independence Islands Series, featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily ever-afters.
The Independence Islands Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.

Every great romance needs a gallant hero, the kind who may not be perfect but definitely has a kind heart, a courageous spirit, and a faithful mind. It doesn’t hurt if he looks dashing either, but what makes him swoonilicious is what’s on the inside. Carolyn Miller is a master of creating heroes like that, and she’s given us another one in Dermott Reilly! From the very beginning when he comes to Mindy’s defense, we know he’s definitely one of the good guys. Watching him around Mindy & Mindy’s son Jon just confirms it, and his overall swooniness was just icing on the cake to his general integrity & love for God. I loved how he treated Mindy and how he lived out his faith.
Mindy is one of those characters that you just want to hug close & pray for a break in the struggles she’s faced – and continues to face – throughout her life. Some of it is the result of her family’s bad decisions, and some of it is the result of her own bad decisions…. and some of it is just the result of life in a broken world. Regardless of the reason, her weary & bruised heart needs rest from the cruel words thrown at her, and she needs an infusion of Jesus’ love to soothe the places in her spirit that need healing & remind her of her worth and value. Enter Dermott who has a knack for showing up at just the right time, as well as Mindy’s neighbor Tina & daughter Mercy who are Jesus’ hands and feet for Mindy & sweet little Jon. Miller weaves these moments seamlessly through the story without being preachy or feeling forced, and Mindy’s journey to restoration with God is sweet and natural.
Bottom Line: Regaining Mercy by Carolyn Miller has a little bit of everything for its readers – layered characters, an engaging plot, some heart-in-your-throat moments, reality drama, island living, gentle faith messages, and a sweet love story. This is the only book I’ve read so far in the Elnora Island series or the overarching Independence Island series, and I did feel a bit off kilter at first, trying to orient myself to where the islands were located and who all the players were. But once I (quickly) got situated in the story, it reads really well as a stand alone. It’s a touching novel of restoration and, yes, finding mercy (in more ways than one), and it hits all the ‘summer romance read’ sweet spots, too!
(I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)
Whoa! The opening scene of this contemporary romance pushed all my emotional buttons and was a great springboard for the kind of feel-your-way-through read that I so adore. My heart broke for this underdog heroine, so beaten down by life and unable to get a break. Then, I was seething with outrage over a certain character's treatment of poor Mindy only to find myself swooning when Dermott gallantly intervenes. But then my hope did a nose dive because...well, you have to read Regaining Mercy to find out why, but I loved the way Miller kept me on emotional tenterhooks right to the end. Happy, happy sigh.
Great title tie-in, by the way because this is definitely a story that focuses on redemption and grace and the never ending mercy of a good, good Father. Love the way the inspirational threads are such an integral part of the plot, never preachy but testifying all the same.
So, Dermott is the kind of hero you'd want pursuing you in real life. Solid in his faith enough that he actually lives it out. While so many other islanders are busy judging Mindy, Dermott quietly accepts her past, offering genuine friendship and support while hoping for so much more. When Mindy is ready -- because there's nothing Neanderthal or pushy about this swoonworthy hero!
As for Mindy, she needs to learn to trust in the few good friendships she has cultivated since her return home. They might be few, but they offer solid support and great examples of what Christian living actually looks like. But Mindy is so used to bearing down under the negative it takes a good long while before she allows genuine love to break through her barriers.
Lots of lovely layers both in character and plot with some real heart-tugging moments along the way. Not to mention the toe curls. :-)
I enjoyed another trip back to Elnora as I read Mindy and Dermott’s story. Mindy needs a job to support she and her son, but when self confidence trying to destroy Mindy and any chances she will have holding a job. Of only she wouldn’t have taking the job on the reality TV show, but she does, and it looks like it will haunt her forever. Dermott enjoys being around Mindy and wants to help her if she would let him, but this just causes even more problems for Mindy.
I love anything author Carolyn Miller writes and this one is no different. She does an excellent job creating a cast of characters that you will fall in love with. I really like Mindy and enjoyed watching her character develop throughout the story. I felt so bad for her, the way people treated her, and like that immediately Dermott is attracted to her. I love his strong personality and I would love to have him come and landscape my yard and add all the flowers he likes! I need to stop rambling because there is so much that goes on in this story and I want to tell it all but I can’t. You need to read it for yourself. This is part of a beach read series, but it can really be enjoyed anywhere, anytime. If you enjoy a nice clean read with a little faith element running through it, you will love this one. I highly recommend Regaining Mercy for your reading enjoyment. Thi one gets Five Stars from me.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
This was a sweet and quick read! I read the whole thing in one sitting! I love that Carolyn Miller has branched out into contemporary books since I love her writing! This book gave a great look at what life might be like for people that had been on reality tv. I liked the message that was in this book too. I enjoyed reading about some favorite characters from the last book of hers in this series! I can’t wait to read more!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
Regaining Mercy begins with a scene that is all too familiar in today's society. An affluent church lady verbally attacks Mindy Murray because she is an unwed mother who has recently taken part in a reality television dating program. Her efforts to defend herself lead to her being dismissed from her job, and once again, Mindy experiences a feeling of failure and defeat. I felt so sorry for Mindy and I was so disgusted with this person who professed Christianity, but displayed no Christian qualities. Is it any wonder that Mindy questioned the faith that this woman confessed?
Carolyn Miller is the author of some of my favorite Regency romances, but this book proves her talent for writing contemporary fiction. Regaining Mercy touches on single parenting, financial struggles, children with social issues, and the pros and cons of social media. Gossip and judgement are major factors, but this is also a story of love, hope, and learning to trust again. Dermott Reilly is a dream hero and the answer to her prayers if...Mindy can overcome her insecurities. Mindy and Dermott are both in need of a second chance, but can they find it together?
Regaining Mercy is a heartwarming story and I recommend it to all who enjoy contemporary Christian romance.
I received a copy of this book from the author and Celebrate Lit. There was no expectation of a positive review. These are my own thoughts.
Mindy is struggling to hold down a job to support herself and her four year old son after a short stint on a reality dating show, and trying to stand up to the judgement of others.
This is a sweet romance set on the islands in the aftermath of a reality dating show. It was a bit of a slower start for me, but picked up as it went along. Dermott has a big heart and I loved how he connected quickly with Jon, he is a good friend and doesn't care what other people think about Mindy's past.
It was a sweet modern romance, with fun characters and adorable children. I loved the island setting and especially Mindy's sweet neighbor who shows genuine Christian love to her and her son.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is a sweet story of a painful past turning to redemption and healing. Mercy wasn’t a “good girl”. She’s a single mom with a history that won’t leave her alone. She has been shown unkindness by many in real life and on social media. The word slut is not new to her. But that all pales in comparison to the love she has for her son. Dermott is distracted by the sister of his friend. He’s felt a responsibility to care for her, to be her friend and a big brother sort, after her own brother left her. But to be honest, he really doesn’t think of her as a sister at all. They’ve both struggled with dysfunctional families and want to be more. But pride may keep them apart. A sweet little story about God’s mercy after we make mistakes.
If you have not started reading this series, what are you waiting for? I really liked this story and have a soft spot for your feature character Mindy. While I have never been on a reality show, I can relate to her in other ways. Her childhood was not the best and it has left scars on her heart. It broke my heart that others judged her because her parents were not the best role models.
Mindy is trying to survive and support her son the best way she can. Now maybe she didn’t make the best decision by being on a show but all she wanted was to provide for her son Jon. Coming back to the island after her appearance on the show brings out sone very unfriendly people who have no problem insulting her. I cringed at the comments made by some of the people about Mindy. There is some positive in her life though. Her neighbor Tina is a blessing to Mindy and is always there to lend a hand. She is a perfect example of helping those in need and loving unconditionally. I loved how Tina stood by Mindy as she struggles with her life. She gives words of encouragement and is a great person to lean on.
Dermott was a good character who has a big heart. He is friends with Mindy and stands up for her when someone says hurtful things to her. That part of the story in the grocery store reminded me of things happening today. We need to stand up for each other and not allow hatred and bullying to happen. I thought the author did a great job of illustrating how important it is for us to speak up and not allow the enemy to damage a person’s self esteem.
I want to mention Jon because I think he is a very important character in the story. Mindy has raised him on her own and we see glimpses of Jon struggling with interacting with people. I know Mindy wanted to seek help for him, but money was a factor and I think pride was peeking its head out as well. She doesn’t want to accept help because she feels like a failure. But really what she is doing is not allowing Jon to get the help he needs to live a normal life.
Mindy is in desperate need of finding her way back to God. She has a problem with trust, pride and forgiveness. It was interesting to see how the author addressed these topics with faith. I enjoyed the story and would love to see a follow up story about her.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Regaining Mercy: Elnora Island Independence Islands #12 Elnora Island #6 By Carolyn Miller
Mindy Murray can't escape the label that has followed her all her life thanks to her family's less than stellar reputation. Being a single mom and having a short stint on Love at First Glance hasn't helped her image at all. Going on a reality show was only to get money to help care for her son Jon and his needs. But the pious old-timers don't see her as anything more than a trashy tramp and a blight on her late grandmother's reputation. Worse their bullying has cost her her job.
When Dermott Reilly stands up for her, Mindy isn't sure why he would even bother other than the fact that he was friends with her brother. But helping Mindy opens Demott's eyes to just how tough her life is and how much she cares for her son. But Mindy's spiritual state has him wary of pursuing a relationship with her. But when his company needs Mindy's skills with social media for a garden competition he finds himself spending a lot more time with her, getting to know her and Jon better. And the more he learns the more he wants to be part of their life but Mindy finds it hard to believe anyone would want to be a permanent fixture in her life. Her past is proof that she isn't worthy of anyone wanting her in their life and she can't really blame them as she knows where she came from.
Regaining Mercy is a contemporary romance of second chances. There are some misunderstandings that add to Mindy's feelings of unworthiness. But when the storm reaches its climax the reader sees just who Mindy is at her core. Overall this is a well-written story, the characters are well-developed and the perfect weekend island escape. For the most part, this is a feel-good story but like real life, there are ups and downs that must be faced.
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.
i have enjoyed most, if not all of Carolyn Miller's historical romances so as a reader who likes most genres I was delighted to learn that she has ventured into contemporary fiction as well. Regaining Mercy, a novel in Celebrate Lit's Independence Island series, highlights a new developing romance on Elnora Island. Mindy is a young, single mother whose number one priority is to provide for her four-year-old son Jon who is unlike other children his age. Back on the island after a failed appearance on a reality TV show, Mindy struggles with a lack of confidence and a poor self image. Friends Tina and Dermott attempt to help Mindy in every possible way and also to encourage her but she often suspects their motives.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially some of its characters. Tina was a true friend, a gem of a person I'd love to have as my own friend. And Dermott - he's the kind of guy a woman like Mindy needs in their life - someone to build them up and who stands by their side no matter what. Mindy's son Jon was precious and I loved reading about some of the breakthroughs in his communication with Mindy.
Regaining Mercy also has an important lesson that we need to learn as Christians. How much damage do we do to hurting people who are doing the best they can when we judge them and say unkind things about them? How many have we discouraged from a relationship with Christ by our own actions? Mindy was fortunate to have friends who did not give up on her but showed her the love and acceptance she needed.
Regaining Mercy is an excellent book that I am glad I had the opportunity to read. I highly recommend it.
I voluntarily reviewed a digital copy of this book provided by Celebrate Lit. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.
Having enjoyed Carolyn’s first book in this series Restoring Fairhaven and was looking forward to this book and I wasn’t disappointed. I am still not reading as much as I would like and started this book and read half the book in on sitting. It would have been finished the following night if not for being exhausted. From the first scene I was hooked.
The book starts with Mindy working as a cashier dealing with difficult customers who look down on her due to her being on a reality show. One older customer is being extremely difficult and Mindy says something that gets her in trouble. Another customer Dermott comes to her aid only to make things worse. Dermott worked for with her brother and has been looking out for her.
Mindy has a young son Jon who has social difficulties and is now friends with the little girl next door. She needs her job to look after him. This is where Dermott comes up with a suggestion.
Mindy is full of self doubts and low on self confidence and feels everyone is looking down at her. Because of this she often thinks people are constantly judging her. I love the way Carolyn shows how easy it is for people to lack self confidence and feel this way. Seeing Dermott wanting to help and working out what to do is interesting. I also love the neighbour who also wants to help.
If you enjoy Christian Contemporary I am sure you will enjoy this book. The location on the islands and island life makes it even more special. Can’t wait for the next Island to be featured.
Regaining Mercy is written by Carolyn Miller. This book is book 12 in the Independence Island series. While the Series is written by a variety of authors they are all tied together with the Island theme. In this story. Mindy Murray returns home to try and salvage her reputation. She appeared on a reality show for a way to feed her son. She has now returned home and has realized that not all are pleased with her 15 minutes of fame. Dermott Reilly is such a sweet and caring character. He sees past Mindy's reality show. He has a soft spot for both Mindy and her son. He really seems to care for the both of them. He has such a big heart. People in Elnora have been very cruel to Mindy, and Dermott stands up for her when people are saying hurtful things.
Because of the way church folk have treated her, Mindy is not fond of church. This book is about a woman who is in desperate need of God but flawed humans have blocked the way. I wanted to reach through the pages and hug her. I have been hurt by Church people, so I can relate. However, the author shows that God is bigger then all of our pain, past and hurts. I love how she laid the story out.
I have previously read this author in this series and some of her Regency works. I am a huge fan of her. Her writing style flows effortlessly, everything goes together smoothly. She always creates such wonderful characters. Her storylines are always God centered.
I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program, all thoughts are my own.
Regaining Mercy: Elnora Island, by Carolyn Miller, is the twelfth book in the multi-author Independence Islands series. Set on a small Atlantic island off the coast of Georgia, this novel offers a contemporary story of friendship and second chances. Featuring an endearing cast of characters, Regaining Mercy is a meaningful love story full of authentic emotion, redemption, and faith.
With characters who are relatable in their vulnerability, this novel is memorable and engaging. As the characters turn to their faith and open their hearts to God’s mercy and grace, they endeavor to overcome insecurities, uncertainties, and setbacks. Through unexpected opportunities and fresh perspectives, they are given the chance to nurture healing and wholeness. And it is through these characters, their motivations, and their choices that the themes of friendship, purpose, faith, and trust are developed. These relevant themes are sincerely heart-felt and inspiring.
A skilled writer of fiction, Ms. Miller always succeeds in crafting stories that are thoughtful and enjoyable. Like all of Ms. Miller’s novels, Regaining Mercy offers an entertaining story that is relevant and full of hope. It is a genuinely appealing novel that is compelling and uplifting. It is certainly a great addition to a special book series, and I happily recommend it.
*I was given a copy of this book by the publisher/author and CelebrateLit. A review was not required. The review I have written is voluntary and contains opinions that are entirely my own.
Regaining Mercy is the thirteenth book in the Independence Islands series, but like the rest of the books in the series (written by a variety of authors), it can be read as a standalone as well.
From the start, this story drew me in with sympathy for a single mom Mindy who was judged by some in her island community based on her past mistakes, and the past mistakes of her family. I was equally drawn into the seemingly perfect and charming romance novel hero of Dermott, quick to come to her rescue. Though the story and the characters drew me in quickly... I must admit I flip flopped on Mindy's character throughout the story. I believe this in large part had to do with how she let her pride stand in the way of having her son's issues looked at. I realize that this pride and fear was part of what allowed us to see her growth throughout the story and so I do understand it (and as someone who is often guilty of taking comments to heart and as personal failures, I did relate to her in many ways too)... still, as a special needs mom myself, that did irritate me a bit as well. While perhaps a bit of a personal annoyance, in the big picture, it really didn't impact my overall enjoyment of the story. I found it to be a quick paced and sweet romance with a really great message of faith mixed in as well. Fans of inspirational romances are sure to want to check this one out.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book for consideration. All thoughts are my own.
The Independence Islands Series has become one of my favorite series of all time. Regaining Mercy by Carolyn Miller is Book 6 for Elnora Island stories. I have read a few of the other book featuring Elnora Island.
Mindy Murray is a single mom to a 4yr old son. She is trying really hard to make a life for her and her son. She is being bullied by the older members of her community because she appeared on a reality show, Love at First Glance. She admits she did the show for the compensation that she received to help support her son. Dermott Reilly, a friend of her brother, steps in and sticks up for Mindy. Dermott really has a soft spot for Mindy and has taken a liking to her. His concern though is her Spiritual lacking. Mindy admits she was turned off to the church due to Church folk chastising her for being a Single Mom. Dermott sees how much she LOVES her son and that she will do whatever she can for her son. Will Mindy come back to the Church and to God? Does Dermott have a chance at a relationship with Mindy? Will Mindy gain back confidence in herself and others?
WOW, what an AMAZING storyline. Mindy is a strong mom who will do anything for her son. Dermott has a strong faith and is kind and loving man. I really like how Dermott really makes it a priority to be with someone of Faith. Mindy is lacking trust in others, but throughout the story grows stronger. A WONDERFUL BOOK!
This is a sweet story about starting over again in life. Mindy Murray is a young unwed mother who deeply loves her child. She’s also an eliminated contestant on the romantic reality show “Love at First Glance”. Mindy has returned home to Elnora Island to establish a secure home for her son, but some of the local residents are making it difficult for them by circulating gossip about her and bashing her reputation. However, Mindy does have true friends who want the best for her. Dermott Reilly is one of those, but Mindy’s battered heart makes it difficult for her to allow anyone to draw close to her.
Mindy immediately had my sympathy. She felt rejected; was struggling financially; and she felt worthless. She was also wondering if she was was failing as a mom to her little son, Jon, because of his difficultly in relating well to others. I admired Dermott because even though he was attracted to Mindy, he was more concerned about her relationship with God.
This story has much to say about the influence that social media has in our lives, and how it can be used for both good and bad purposes. It also reminds us that God desires to forgive us; redeem us; and give us a new purpose in life when we turn to Him.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Okay, Wow. This book takes us on quite an adventure. Mindy is suffering from the ‘3rd and 4th generation” effects of Deuteronomy 5.9, it seems to me. The generational consequences of a person’s rebellion against God. But. But she doesn’t stay stuck in that place. The beauty of watching her break out of that and come to trust God for what she needs, and who she is, is wonderful.
Dermott himself is dealing with trying to create his own place, as he didn’t fit his family’s mold of ‘acceptable career path’ and therefore has no worth to them. But he doesn’t let that define his actual worth or the value of accepting people for who they are. He’s patient with Mindy, and steadfast, though it catches him off guard when his feelings for his friend’s sister change into something more.
Both of them let their fears get the best of them a few times, and don’t act, or act rashly because of it, allowing us a glimpse of overcoming fears, facing challenges, and allowing others to help.
Good object lessons wrapped up in a fantastic storyline that will have you laughing plenty, thinking a bit, and maybe learn something along the way.
My favorite quote:
Dermott Reilly kissed like she’d seen him shovel: with finesse, and strenth, and focused determination.
* I received a copy of this book from #CelebrateLit and chose to review it here. All thoughts are my own.
What I think you should know: Regaining Mercy, a contemporary Christian Romance by Carolyn Miller is the twelfth book in the Independence Island Series and the sixth book set on Elnora Island. This book features several characters from previous books and does give spoilers for those characters, however it can be read as a standalone.
What you might need to know: Mindy’s son demonstrates many characteristics associated with the Autism Spectrum. Mindy has many regrets from her past that leave her feeling unworthy.
What I think about this this book: I love getting to know characters that are just briefly mentioned in previous books, in this story we get to know Dermot who works at Greener Gardens. We also meet Mercy, a single Mom who is struggling to stay afloat while dealing with the judgement of some vocal critics in her small community. I really enjoyed getting to know both of them along with Jon and his best friend Mercy. While she is only a child and overall played a small part in the story I love how Mercy showed the acceptance and love that we all need to show others. This was a really sweet story with enough action to keep it interesting.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
The Independence Islands series continues with Mindy's story. Mindy Murray only wants to provide for her son Jon, but she is constantly judged by people because of her past decisions and dysfunctional family. The only ones who seem to care for Mindy and Jon are her friends Tina and Dermott. Through a series of events, including sickness and a tropical storm, Mindy and Dermott have decisions to make that will change the way they view each other and those around them. I enjoyed this contemporary romance very much. I couldn't put the book down until I finished because I became so involved in the story and the characters, which came alive for me through the fabulous and realistic writing. Mindy's story was heartbreaking, but also redemptive in nature as she learned to trust God and her friends. I was left with such hope and encouragement when I finished reading. I highly recommend this book and am eagerly awaiting the next one. I received a copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required, and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Regaining Mercy by Carolyn Miller is book 12 in the Independence Island Series. This is a series that is being written by six different authors and covers five different island. While these are great stand alone stories, they also touch on people and places from earlier stories, so it is best to read the series in order.
In this story we meet Mindy, a young single mom, who went on a reality tv show to help make money to support her son. While many people in the area look down on her because of this, Dermott gives her a chance to use her skills and talents to help boost business for Greener Gardens.
I really enjoyed reading this story. This is a well written, easy to read story with caring characters. I enjoyed the strength Mindy had to do what was needed for her son’s sake as well as the friendship and support she received from her neighbor, Tina, and Dermott. I enjoyed the friendship she had with Tina and her family.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and publisher. This is my honest review.
Things couldn't get worse for Mindy. Her difficult past, and choices she had made continued to beat her down.
But Dermott Reilly stepped in to defend and encourage her, and that was a turning point for her. Handsome, strong, and a man of integrity, he kept showing up.
Mindy did her best to take care of her young son, but found that she needed to depend on the Lord and the help of others. She slowly began adding people to her circle that could encourage her, and that prompted her to believe in herself and utilize her skills and experiences to make dreams come true for herself and others.
This was a fun story to read. There was plenty of heartbreak, joy, and excitement throughout. I recommend this latest book from the Independence Islands series for readers of contemporary fiction and Christian romance. It's a great beach- or anytime- read!
I received an e-ARC of this book from the author, through Celebrate Lit, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
Sometimes moms have to take drastic measures in order to take care of their children, and Mindy Murray finds herself in such a set of circumstances. Going on a reality show in order to take care of her child seems like a good idea that turns wrong in the end. But her earlier life causes problems as well when she returns to her small island community.
Some people on the island recognize Mindy’s need for support and encouragement. Dermott Reilly, his coworkers, her neighbor, and a few other people show love and compassion towards Mindy and her son. This book illustrates the difficulties life takes us on, and how things like a tropical storm and a child who goes missing provide opportunities to show God’s love to others.
This story captured my attention from the first chapter to the very end. I definitely found this next installment in the Independence Island Series worth reading.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but it in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
Each time I read one of the Independence Islands books I’m reminded once again that they aren’t just fluff-and-nonsense beach reads. There has been a surprising amount of depth to each book, and Regaining Mercy is no different.
I went into this book expecting to enjoy it. I enjoyed Carolyn Miller’s first book in the series, so why think otherwise? And I’m glad to say I was not disappointed. The characters were engaging and the struggles they faced felt real. They felt like people I could empathize with.
The book itself is well-written. It was fun to catch up with old friends and meet a few new faces. Fun too, to see how the business has grown while we’ve been “away”.
Because that’s what brought us to the islands to start with—mobile businesses bringing much needed services to the Independence Islands.
I requested a copy of this book to review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
I have enjoyed the previous books by various authors from the Elnora Island series. I was excited when I found out the sixth installment, Regaining Mercy, was Carolyn Miller’s contribution. I love her books and I was not disappointed with this one. I instantly felt a connection to Mindy. I could understand her and what she was going through. I thought there was great chemistry between her and Dermott. Throwing in a beautiful setting of Elnora Island, makes the story perfect. It is such a wonderful book to read.
I am giving Regaining Mercy a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading quick and clean romance fiction. As always, I will be looking for more books by Carolyn Miller in the future.
I received a digital copy of Regaining Mercy from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
This is an entertaining Christian romance that really emphasizes God's grace and mercy. Miller has crafted Mindy as a young woman with an embarrassing past that makes her very unsure of herself. She is a single mother with a four year old who seems to have some development issues. She feels like she is a total failure. Defensive and defeated, she certainly needs someone to rescue her.
Mindy is a character developed almost to excess. She is so down on herself she will not even seek help for her son when it was offered. She is so defensive even innocent comments destroy her. That seemed a bit unrealistic to me. I am glad there is included in the novel a clear message of God's redeeming work of mercy and grace, no matter our past.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
"Regaining Mercy" by Carolyn Miller is a story about a unwed mother who goes on a reality show to earn money for her son. This is a story about people judging others without really knowing them. Not only is Mindy judged for being on the show, her son is not like other kids his age. So she feels like a failure. There is a hint of the reason/ reasons in the story and I hope in the future books we get more insight into the reason. Yes, I know the books are short reads and the books are more on the romance side, but curious readers wants all the answers, lol.
I think my favorite character is Dermott Reilly. Why, because he stands up for Mindy when no one else does.
I recommend this book if you want a short clean read about second chances.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these are my opinions.
I enjoyed this and it was a very fast read. It's really a touching story. Mindy doesn't have the best history and the town doesn't want to let her forget it. Or improve herself it seems. She has a lot of self doubt and trust issues. She also has a son to take care of.
Dermott is her brother's friend and she thinks that is why he stands up for her (but it doesn't help in the least). I liked Mindy's mothering, she was a good mom. Her and Dermott are good together but they each have their own things to deal with. I truly was pulled in from the first sentence with this book. It's a good one to read.
4/5
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
"Regaining Mercy" is Carolyn Miller's second book in the Independence Islands series. It isn't absolutely necessary, but I would recommend reading her first book in the series, "Restoring Fairhaven" first so you get the background of Greener Gardens and get to meet the characters. This book doesn't have as much cross over of characters from the other books. The "food truck" is mentioned a couple of times and Dante is mentioned but that is it. I had a harder time connecting with the characters in this book, although I'm not exactly sure why. I didn't dislike them. I was glad for the growth in Mindy's life, though. I wished I could look at the pictures of the gardens on Instagram! I look forward to visiting more of the Islands in future books.
I got a free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own and given voluntarily. No compensation was received for my review.
Oh, how far we think we fall. But is it too far for God’s mercy and grace? The journey continues on Elnora Island. In this installment children enter the drama. As in real life, they add a vivacious element to the day’s activities. Adults and their pride sometimes hinder the young lives. Taking a chance and trusting in god’s tender care can lead to a better existence in all areas for all people.
The ego is a strange “being.” It can as equally destroy if too strong on the side of self-promotion as at the other end of defeatism and the lowest of self-esteem. There is a healthy medium that once found is a mechanism of strength, hope, and contentment. Ask God to show the perfect way to that peace.
As with all the books in this series, this book can stand alone. Mindy winds up on a reality show, all to help her son. She wasn't really trying to find love, she needed security for her child and her life. Brave woman, if you ask me. TV is often brutal! Mindy is easy to relate too, just the same. I found myself wanting to comfort her and rooting for Dermott and a HEA ending. Love blooms, and shows up in the most unexpected places. All she has to do is let her heart heal, and let God lead and guide her. It's a sweet story that reads pretty quickly and leaves you excited for the next installment in the series.
Thanks to Celebrate lit for my copy of this book. This reef is my own, left freely. A positive review is never required.
