Jerry never expected to be a ruler, but fate and evil sorcerers ripped him between dimensions to a land of magic and monsters. After fighting for his life and becoming the ruler of a chaos tower, Jerry and the people of Kasgrad are beset by enemies on all sides. Even as Jerry builds his defenses against existing powers, a new threat has infested the mountains south of Kasgrad. Strange and lethal creatures have begun to stalk the forest and the land itself is being corrupted. Jerry must solve the mystery of the mutamancer before the threat becomes too powerful to stop. Only careful planning, strong allies, and hard fighting can give them a chance for survival. FYI for litRPG and Gamelit This book is only lightly crunchy with developing RPG elements as the story progresses. No harem.
Would appreciate more of a refresher about the last book and where things stand. When it started I knew I liked the book before, but couldn't really remember what happened and who was who.
There were just so many issues with the story that the author should have fixed before publishing.
The protagonist is a conquering sociopath who seems to think the fact that he’s in a medieval era world makes everyone else idiots with no autonomy, which is supported by the complete lack of depth in characters, including the protagonist. The protagonist even seems to to completely forget about what should be key characters in the story (like his general that manages to just disappear after being injured early in the story), which feels like just an oversight of the author, but makes the main character seem like a dick. Every enemy of the protagonist is a melodramatic villain, and every confrontation with a significant enemy involves monologuing and a protracted duel. The main character never really seems to have any moral conflicts or personal development despite the fact that he’s waging a war on drafted conscripts and functionally enslaving natives and other people from earth using magically binding oaths.
Not sure how I feel about this book. Not really enjoying it so far. Nothing really happens that interests me.
I know I wasn't a big fan of book one, but it was entertaining by the end. This just seemed to be battle after battle. The protagonist didn't even do anything fun like last book.
I think I will stop the series here. I don't know where the constantly trying to get your enemy to surrender is going to go, but I won't find out.
