My name is KA Richardson, and I am a crime and romantic suspense writer based in the North East of England. I write around my other work commitments so am constantly on the go. I love reading many genres, love speaking to people and I spend a lot of time people-watching in coffee shops, though if I'm honest this is more for the purposes of character-building and plotting. I enjoy watching 'cop' shows from both the UK and the USA, and am a fan of sci-fi. I began thinking about writing as a career in 2010 and completed my Ma Creative Writing in 2011. I love to be inspired, and enjoy spending time with friends and family, as well as other like-minded folk. My website has some more info on me, if you're interested pop on over to www.kerryannrichardson.com, or I can be found on Facebook as KA Richardson and Twitter @kerryann77.
Just when you think you've found all the great crime authors out there you stumble across another star. K.A. Richardson has got a book blend here that thrilled me as a reader. I was eager to dig into this book.
I'd been to hear her speak at a book event so knew her novels read well as stand-alone books as she focused on different characters in the North East Police Dept in each book, that made it easy to get stuck in.
Characters. Characters. Characters. These are a huge strength of her writing. The book is not only pushed along by a dark and fascinating plot but gives us complex, damaged, flawed characters.
In this novel the hunt is on for a relentless rapist and murderer. He has no mercy. The police on the case are intensively involved and soon some plot twists start to show us just how and why. A surprising element of this book is a relationship that forms between two characters in the book. You don't expect romance to bloom but it does and what's great about it is that is just enhances not detracts from the plot. Two broken people find each other in the middle of dark times. It's not mushy either.
Set in the North East but highly readable for worldwide readers as local slang and lingo are not used. Dialect and conversation could be set anywhere - this gives the book a broad appeal on one hand but as a local North East reader I would have liked to have seen a small injection of the unique local people, accent and slang used in small doses.
I powered through this book. I wasn't bored for a second and the quality of writing is very high. There is just the right amount of detail around police procedures and forensics, including digital forensics - no doubt helped along by the author's background in crime scene investigation.
The bad guys are hugely unlikeable and there is no fluffing around dark scenes in the book. It's realistic and therefore painful to read. I could see this book as a TV mini-series in a heartbeat.
The author threw me in a spin with a cliffhanger that had me on the edge of my seat and because of it I went straight on to the next novel. I was hooked. I can officially say that K.A. Richardson is now one of my favourite crime authors. I was very impressed with her quality of writing and strong characters. Highly recommended and five stars from me.
I started the next book in the series straight away so go check out my review of that one too!
I bought a paperback of this book at an author's event and was delighted to meet Kerry in person. A delightful lady with a huge talent. All review opinions are my own. Honest and totally unbiased.
I'VE BEEN WATCHING YOU is the second novel in the The Forensic Files/North East Police Series, by K.A. Richardson. Having just finished and enjoying the first book in the series, “With Deadly Intent”, I was eager to continue with the series. This is the review of I’ve Been Watching You.
The Books in The Forensic Files/North East Police Series include: BOOK 1-With Deadly Intent BOOK 2-I've Been Watching You BOOK 3-Time to Play BOOK 4-Watch You Burn BOOK 5-Under the Woods BOOK 6-From the Dark
The novel opens with a gripping scene and one that will grab your attention and have you flipping the pages to see what will happen next.
He was feigning injury, lying on the ground, mountain bike on the ground beside him, waiting for her to discover him during her jog, and then when she came to investigate…out came the knife to her throat!
HE HAD BEEN WATCHING HER!
Ben Cassidy is a new crime scene investigator covering for Cass McKay on maternity leave that we met in the first book. Ben has been flying solo for about two months, and has her plate full juggling work and motherhood. Ben has a five-year-old daughter and they both live with her aunt who looks after her daughter when she is working. Keen to better herself, she enrolls on a course in Digital Forensics and meets Jacob Tulley, an ex-army veteran struggling with his past.
Detective Inspector Alistair McKay and the team investigate the apparent hit and run of a care home worker. But Ben suspects there is more to it, and soon discovers the connection to a series of murders.
Ben and Jacob must work together when evidence of a digital footprint emerges from the killer who knows how to cover his tracks. We follow the killer, his planning and execution of his acts. He is so confident that no one will suspect him. But everybody makes a mistake…and Ben is determined to find this serial killer.
This was a well written novel with much effort spent on character development, which enriched the drama. I won’t forget, I’ve Been Watching You, and will pay more attention to my surroundings. Numerous twists and turns and cliffhanger that I didn’t see coming. Can’t wait to start the next book in the series. I really enjoyed this novel, and feel that this series will appeal to a wide audience of readers of crime fiction. Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author and The Book Club Reviewer Request Group (FB) for my digital copy.
Ben Cassidy is a crime scene investigator. She also runs an online site for victims of rape and she's s the single mother of a 4-year-old precocious little girl. A victim of rape several years earlier left her almost dead.
While she and her team investigate a hit and run, she finds there are similarities to a number of murders much closer to home. She was meant to die in her attack ... has 'he' come back to rectify that?
While taking a course in Digital Forensics, she meets Jacob Tully, an ex-army war veteran who has his own personal issues, such as PTSD. He has some horrific scars and has to walk with a cane. He's brilliant at his job.
This is a great story premise with much attention paid to the development of the characters. There are surprises and twists and turns that left me reeling. I've been watching you -- Just the thought of being watched while unaware of the watcher sends shivers down my spine.
Many thanks to he author / Bloodhound Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. As there was a small cliff hanger, I am really looking forward to the next adventure. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
This was a really gripping read that I couldn't put down. We have two killers in this one with a very interesting connection although one of them is, possibly, the worst criminal ever.
It's multiple point of view which is always a favourite of mine so we get to see inside the heads of Ben, Jacob, various police, victims and the killers which sounds a lot but the story is so well written that it's easy to know who all these individuals are and follow without confusion. It gave it an extra layer that I enjoyed.
It starts off with a vicious crime and doesn't let up until the end. Having a quick scan through the other books in the series it looks like each one is based around different individuals from the North East crime team. I'm looking forward to reading these.
Yikes that was harrowing, one of the most harrowing ever. I had to have little breaks every so often to regain my equilibrium.
This book has some familiar characters from the first book and introduces Ben (female) Cassidy who has joined the North East Police forensic team. Ben was brutally raped and left for dead eight years ago but has made a new life for herself with her daughter, Grace, and her Aunt Aiofe. We also meet Jacob. A former special forces soldier, he was discharged after suffering a bad leg injury and still needs a walking stick to get around. He works in the electronic forensic lab. Both are scarred and damaged people who are wary of rejection. You can see where this is going can't you?
We are also privy to the thoughts and action of a horrible man who stalks and kills young women. And we meet John who is another horrible man who has no compunction about killing and abusing women. Or are they the same person? When a young woman who has been stalked for weeks is savagely raped and murdered and Ben sees the body, she loses it completely. The wound pattern is the same as from her attack eight years ago. Is her attacker now here? Does he know where she is? Will he come for her? I think you can see where this is going as well.
I thought the savagery of the attacker was overdone until I remembered some actual cases that have occurred both her and overseas. Unfortunately, people like this exist although, fortunately, they are rare. I found the hateful attitude towards women almost painful to read about. This book is very dark and very disturbing but very, very good.
Cass Hunt is on maternity leave so it's left to her team to solve some pretty horrific crimes that have happened in the area. I have to say the criminals in this novel are probably some of the sickest ones I have come across and at times it does make for some uncomfortable reading. It does intensify the story though and by the end it really is an edge of your seat read.
Ben is a wonderful character and it was great to really get to know one of the other members of the team. She is a strong but quite a damaged character who I was glad when she met another damaged soul in Jacob. Their backgrounds are quite different but both of them are fighters and was lovely to read of them coming to terms with their pasts through the obvious bond that was forming between them.
The case that Ben is working on is set to send her world in turmoil. I was so wrapped up in Ben's world that I felt like I was going through every emotion that she was going through. Even though she is scared she is very much determined to face her fears head on so that she can lay them to rest once and for all.
I've Been Watching You is quite a nail biter of a read. I was shocked, even horrified at some of the events that were unfolding. Towards the end it really picks up pace and I had to keep remembering to breath as I was constantly finding myself holding my breath as I truly didn't know what to expect next. A great follow on from With Deadly Intent which is the first in the series.
This book had me hooked from the start. I loved the first in the series and this one certainly didn't disappoint. Great characters, great story which kept me on my toes. A well deserved 5 stars.
11/4/2008, Durham, UK. Jacob Tulley (PTSD, retired UK military, PhD) was teaching Intro to Digital Forensics. Scott Anderson (counselor) had been murdered. PC Rob Winters had arrested/interrogated James. Ricardo taught boxing at the local gym. Newstead Residential Home, Sunderland. Eve (wife) had told John (husband) guess what honey I’m PG. John Whitworth’s dad was abusive & his mom had left both of them. John was taken in by social services & placed in foster care. Who is Gareth Chamberlain? Ben, Sergeant MacKenzie, Martin “Cotty” Cottlethwaite, Sam (probationer), & Nigel Evans (pathologist), were at the crime scene in Pallion. It was ruled a suicide by asphyxiation.
Ben & Alex were there to greet Cass & the new baby daughter Isobel Rose McKay. Rose Peters (Cass’s mum) was on her way. Clarice Johnson was found brutally murdered. Could there be a serial killer on the loose in Sunderland? John had just done a hit/run on Ann Caffrey. He was sure no one had seen him. Mrs. Francis’s son, the one who just got out of prison, has stolen all her jewelry. The daughter is beside herself, ended up having a panic. Dr. Arthur Carmichael had no good news for Aoife O’Byrne (Ben’s Aunt, mother), nor Ben. Surgery will be tomorrow to remove the lump & hopefully there will be no more cancer cells. The unnamed victim was taken to the University Hospital (Durham) where she was treated extensive injuries/sexual assault, listed in critical condition, 1 yr. later no arrests have been made, Ben & Grace (5, daughter) went to visit Aunt Aoife in the Sunderland Royal Hospital.
Teresa-Jane Yulley (TJT, attorney, Angus, Marshall & Stead Solicitors, PhD), had been severely beaten & was now in the Sunderland royal hospital. Dr. Stirling was attending to her. Jacob Tulley (PTSD, retired military) & Ben came to visit her. John had killed Ann in the city park. Eve Whitworth (wife/mother) was getting treated at the Newstead Residential Home. John Whitworth (husband/father) & Carolyn (retail clerk), both planned on visiting her. John was now in custody thanks to the quick thinking & team work staff of Newstead
Marie Smithson (DNA lab tech), had some startling news for the MIT staff. CSI Cassidy “Cass” Hunt (supervisor) had been kidnapped. Marie Smithson (DNA lab tech), had some startling news for the MIT staff. John had died while in police custody. Back too square 1. He couldn’t have murdered Clarice.
Who is Mitchell Brown?
A total nightmare to piece the serial killer murder mystery together.
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. Wow, a fairly well written psychological thriller book. It wasn’t always very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a large set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great serial killer murder mystery movie, or better yet a mini TV series. That said I will only rate it at 4/5 stars.
Thank you for the free Bloodhound Books; Amazon Digital Services LLC; book Tony Parsons MSW (Washburn)
I received an Arc copy of this book in return for an honest review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Full of twists and turns. The pages just flew by. A well written story you just couldn't help rooting for Ben and her family
I would like to thank Betsy at Bloodhound Books and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest and open review. Well, Ms Richardson, You've done it again! You've produced a book which is jam-packed full of suspense and thrills and also managed to produce on OMG revelation. A warning, however, before you start reading! This book may have you up all night, reading straight through, as you'll be so desperate to get to the end. If you love psychological thrillers you MUST read this. Can we have book 3 very soon please?
I loved everything about this book from the great characterisation through to the often uncomfortable plotline. The uncomfortable events laid out in the book only heightened the experience for me as a reader.
You can tell the author has in-depth knowledge in the forensic field, it really shows with all the intricate details to the crimes.
I particularly loved Ben's character - she is very strong with an underlying vulnerability.
Highly recommended read but wished I sought out the first book With Deadly Intent before reading this one.
Amazing book and a worthy follow up to With Deadly Intent. I love the interaction between Ben and Jacob and although it is a crime book it also carries an element of romance. Loved it. Highly recommended.
absolutely fabulous what can i say ben and jacob brought together with both having a very sad past that had me in tears reading loved every bit of this book thank you to the author
This is a clever tale of two sadistic killers. Both stories are realistic and brutal.
Ben is developing her career as a Crime Scene Investigator whilst raising her young daughter. Jacob is ex forces who lectures in Digital Forensics. Both are physically and psychologically damaged for different reasons.
I enjoyed reading a crime thriller from a different perspective rather than from the investigating detectives and look forward to the next instalment.
This is about Beth, single mother who works for the forensics's department in her local police station has a daughter Grace, and they live with her aunt Aoife.
Jack is ex-military but an experienced forensic within the same force but different location. He also lectures in digital forensics.
He still suffers from PTSD after an IUD exploded on his last tour in Afghanistan. Some of his comrades died and he sustained series injuries to his leg. He needs a stick for walking and is often in pain.
There has been a spate of attacks resulting in the murder of women in the area. The police still have no clues about who this is.
A young girl Clarice lives with her mother's friend Gill and is making a good life for herself and studying at college, after drugs nearly ruined her life. Gill works in a youth outreach centre and has a lot of experience with troubled teens. It is at a college where Clarice first meets Jack, who is giving one of her lectures.
A dark character, John who is a computer geek, respectable for all who knew him bringing up a boy on his own whilst his wife is in a care home after an accident left her with brain damage. To all extents, he is a regular guy, who looks after his son and regularly sits his wife in the home. What is she so scared of??
As the attraction becomes obvious between Ben and Jack we meet another character like John, who also a computer geek and is called Stan. With his expertise, he can hack into virtually every website and can concoct and erase data for his own ends.
A girl Clarice is attacked and killed after Stan has been watching her for months, and Ben is first on the scene in her capacity as a forensic examiner. To her horror, she recognises the way the girls body has been cut before she died, as a copycat to her own assault some 8 years earlier. She should have died but fate saved her, even though he thought she hadn't survived. He knew her as Bree but she had changed her name by deed poll and no-one at work knew about the assault. He gains entry to their homes by masquerading as an official and leaving cameras around their houses so that he can watch them. Underneath his cool exterior he rages which was all that he knew as a child. He learned well from his father how being crude and depraved worked with the opposite sex, or so he thought. His wife is terrified of him but just because she cannot communicate does not mean that she has no comprehension and fear.
Who exactly are John and Stan and why are they both sinister. Possibly they know each other. You will need to read until and end in this brilliant, fast paced plot.
Upon opening this exciting new crime thriller we witness a terrible assault from the past in the prologue. We can almost hear the coldhearted assailant whisper ”I’ve been watching you” and feel the mortal fear, the anguish of the woman who is about to suffer violently. As those words are an exact match for the book title, we can only fear that this is not the last we’ve heard or seen from this brute.
The book focuses on a twisted man obsessed with women he secretly watches, some no more than girls, to choose who will be his next victim. We follow him stalking a young innocent girl, getting to know her habits, spying on her in the privacy of her own room. This man also has flashbacks from his violent youth, from a father who used his fists more than his voice, from the women he had killed over the years. Especially the one, his perfect one, with glowing breasts in the moonlight, the first he had marked as his own. It is gruesome and horrible, reading about the hidden monster that is ready to strike again, planning to submit yet another girl to his torturous game.
The police as well as the CSI are unknown to these predicaments, but soon they will be confronted with the first victims. Will they be able to connect the dots? Are they aware of the danger that is closing in, the threat to one of their own? And will they be in time to prevent the dangerous sociopath and serial killer from capturing and torturing his intended victim Clarice, a young girl we learn to know.
This is KA (Kerry) Richardson’s second crime thriller with the CSI team of Sunderland, also featuring the Sunderland police force. It can be perfectly read as a stand alone. The book is nerve-racking and engrossing, you simply cannot put it down until you have read the last page. The reader sees sinister events happening even before the police or the CSI are aware and yet we also are left in the dark and struggling to make sense of what is happening. The insights into the evil and twisted thoughts combined with the seemingly innocent lives of the characters in the book make the plot even more gruesome and horrific.
Ben Cassidy is a CSI with Sunderland City who is raising four-year-old daughter Grace by herself and has moved back home with Aunt Aoife after living in Dunham. She is wrestling with the lingering psychological and physical damage from a horrific encounter with a psychopath. Jacob Tully is ex-military with experience in combat and has PTSD. He is lecturing a Digital Forensics class Ben attends.
When a local homicide involving a student is executed in a manner that Ben recognizes, it immediately causes traumatic flashbacks. There is also a parallel baddie out there who has a wife in long-term care as a result of his violence against her. He is trying to raise his son to be just like him. Meanwhile, he is crafting the end to his wife's caregiver.
Author Richardson has taken on a violent subject and written her storyline from the viewpoint of the CSI's rather than detectives. Ben and Jacob are closely associated and working with the police, making for a quasi-police procedural but may also border on a psych-thriller as it bounces back and forth between both antagonists POV as often as the protagonist.
The main antagonist has a manic habit of searching, following, and spying on his next victim until he is assured of the perfect time and place where he can quietly, sadistically fulfill his fantasies.
The book begins with a prologue that grabs your attention and proceeds to feed you into Ben's story at the same time as the reader is introduced to both antagonists and Jacob. The plot holds interest but becomes more confusing and somewhat inconsistent.
The characters are not wholly fleshed and I had difficulty with Ben being a sympathetic character. The dialogue is awkward. The romance promoted between Ben and Jacob lacked any warm fuzzies. The conclusion was as expected but then left you with a catastrophic cliff-hanging twist at the end that left you scratching your head and feeling cheated.
I was granted an ebook download by the publisher through NetGalley and appreciated the opportunity to read and review. The blurb sounded interesting, albeit a little misleading, and I'll not be reading another.
John Whitworth is a cruel and sadistic man. With his wife in a home, because of an injury inflicted by him, he still finds ways of abusing her, mentally and psychically. he is a man you do not cross or upset as Ann was soon to discover.
Ben Cassidy, is a tough lady. After noticing Jacob Tulley's good looks at a lecture on Digital Forensics, her insecurity leaves her unable to pursue any romantic liason. Unknown to them both they have things in common. With her four year old daughter Grace and Aunt Aiofe, who has her own secret, she pours herself into her job.
We are introduced to a killer within the pages of K.A Richardson's intriguing novel, although it's a guessing game as to who he is. He is watching Clarice, a young black girl who as well as working as a cleaner is also taking the Forensic class. He has 'wormed' his way into her life and now is making plans for her imprisonment so he can inflict on her all his perversions and atrocities.
A novel that is uncomfortable as it's intense, I've Been Watching You took me out of my comfort zone. I was scared for the characters and eager to know who the perpetrator was.
I of course made my own deduction and of course I was wrong, but I enjoyed the game.
This is an intoxicating read, and it ends in a way that thrilled me. I can't wait for book 2.
You know when you pick up a book that's full of great forensic facts, a touch of romance, a few murders and a damn good storyline that its going to be a fast read ... and that's just what I felt when I read I've Been watching You. KA Richardson has a deft touch with the plot twists and her characterization is great. Ben Cassidy CSI whizz kid made a few brief appearances in Richardson's first book With Deadly Intent and I was pleased to see her return in the follow-on book I've Been Watching You. Ben's backstory is intriguing and the links between that and the inter-twining current events is credible and compelling. So, onto the plots. well you'll be spoiled for choice. We have a husband with murderous intent, a stalker with a proficient IT background with a number of 'targets' on the go and a blossoming romance between two strong main characters. The introduction of Jacob Tully , forensic Digital expert to Richardson's cast of characters is inspired; I just love the nitty gritty of the forensics as a key hook in Richardson's gritty romantic thrillers. All I can say is move over Karen Rose and Beverley Barton there's a new kid on the block and she's steaming up a lather! This is a great read and I'm sure if you like your thrillers tempered with a bit of romance then this is for you.
After reading and loving With Deadly Intent, I was very excited to start book 2 in this series and I was definitely not disappointed and I've Been Watching You is another massive 5* hit. At first I was under the impression this book would be about the adorable Cassie, but soon came to love and admire Ben just as much. What an amazing strong, brave and lovable character she is. Ben has a terrifying past that she struggles with and finds it hard to trust. In fact there were loads of wonderful characters such as Ben’s daughter Grace, her loving and loyal Aunty Aoife (struggled with her name until I was told it is pronounced Eefa) and the fantastic Jacob Tully, an ex army war veteran, who has issues of his own that he is fighting. It was also lovely to read a bit more about past characters such as Cassie, Alex and Ali and hope to be re-introduced to them in future books in this amazing series. I don’t want to give away too much but believe me when I say that there is one EVIL character that will make your spine chill. I've Been Watching You is fast paced, exciting, spine chilling, gripping, twisty and scary and I can’t recommend it highly enough and do hope the wait for book 3 is not too long.
If you enjoy police procedurals where you get to really know the police team, victims and the murderer then this book is a must read. Also, the author has clearly completed a great deal of research into British police procedure. Initially I thought the book was well-written but a bit of a slow-burner as details of the character's home life seemed to get in the way of the story. However after the first third, with the characters all fully introduced, the suspense builds all the way to the final pages and I thoroughly enjoyed the read. I haven't read the first book in the series (I'll certainly be reading the third) and this book works perfectly well as a stand alone. Highly recommend to fans of police procedurals.
What an introduction to a series…. This is the first in what I hope to be a very long line of books… We meet CSI Investigator Ben Cassidy, a single mother to 4 year old grace and also battling with the physical and emotional scars left by an encounter with an horrific psychopath.
With investigating a case so close to home, we are taken on a rollercoaster of a ride on the hunt of a serial killer/killers, this book was graphic, violent, disturbing which are just some of the words I would use to describe it. A real page turner, be prepared for this, you will not want to put it down and it will make the hairs on her neck stand up.
Already looking forward to the next instalment. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bloodhound Books for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
I hadn't read the first in the series and this worked well as a stand alone, although I shall read the first and more. I was absolutely drawn in from the start. Ben's character was fascinating to read and wanted to know more. It kept me guessing...and was a clever, twisty, page turner. Just how I like them...the only downside was I couldn't read it in one go. When I had a chance to finish it, I did an early dinner so I could finish it without interruption. Brilliant.
This is book 1 in a series. The first book in a series always starts a little slower as the author builds the characters and background. It makes the series much better. While working a case, CSI Investigator Ben Cassidy, a single mother, finds evidence that will take the reader on a ride through a serial killer hunt. KA Richardson tells the story in a manner that will find you surprised when the killer is found. If the next books are as good as this one, I'll keep reading as long as she keeps writning.
What impressed me a lot about this book was that there were all these seemingly disconnected characters with divergent lives, but somehow they were all interlinked in the end. That and the fact that the antagonist seemed to have a split personality, threw a few red herrings into the reader's path.
I have to tell you, this book caught me unawares on so many levels. It is quite a complex story line, but so well crafted and written. I enjoyed every page.
I would recommend this book to all lovers of thrillers and suspense.
The second book in a series, featuring a great mix of different and returning characters. The plot is disturbing but well written and keeps you guessing right to the end, I found this book compelling to say the least I literally did not want to put it down and kept reading till late at night to find out what happened, a breathtaking read from an author to watch. I received an arc in exchange for an honest review
Thank you to Bloodhound publishers for an ARC in exchange for an ho est review. This is another brilliant police crime thriller from KA Richardson. I love the detail of characters and crime scenes, which are explained in an easily understood language. This book also had my heart pounding with the terrific, gripping read .it was great to meet another group of characters, especially Ben And Jacob. My personal favourite character is Ali Mackay!
After reading the first book in this series I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next one. It certainly didn't disappoint and once again I was caught up in the lives of Alex,Cass & Ali & the "new kids" on the block. I'm glad that the author has left us hanging in the air at the end so she can create another book for our further pleasure.
