Bridget's Bane

Rate this book
A’tam is the worst.

Sure, he’s the prettiest man on the beach, but he’s a terrible listener. I’ve told him a dozen times that we’re not compatible - in SO many ways - and he refuses to take no for an answer. He had his chance with me, and he blew it.

But A'tam thinks we should be mates. He thinks he can just woo me enough to change my mind. He thinks that sultry kisses and soft touches are the way to a girl’s heart. He thinks that if he shows me that he can be everything I need, I’ll just fall right back into his arms and forget the past.

And….sigh.

He might be right.

Because I want him again and I really, really shouldn’t.

OK, OK... yes I get that something like what happened to Bridget is traumatic, but, OMG!!!, SPEAK UP!!!!!!!!
Also, she's not 12 or a nun, so why doesn't she know how things work???!!!

I was soooo annoyed by Bridget that I didn't enjoyed this book... sorry...

These 2 stars are only for A'tam... and even with that being said, he was annoying too...

I love Ruby Dixon and the Icehome series. I usually love all of the stories and don't really feel like they are repetitive because she gives each character such a unique voice. Be that as it may I really couldn't stand Bridget. A'tam really tried and worked hard. Bridget is just one of those people who never gives in, never gives an inch. She bitched and whined and was so riddled with anxiety she snapped and was nasty to A'tam and others. Eventually they went to therapy to learn to talk to each other and to address her issues, but I disliked her so much by then that I was just annoyed. I liked A'tam. He listened and not only bent over backwards, he freakin did back flips for Bridget. I was just so glad in the end that she wasn't crying and whining, that was the happy ending for me.

Love without resonance!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💙💚💜🤎
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎🌍
Character development: 🫢😤😡😊🥰

The heroine: Bridget - She grew up with a mother who was a dancer, though Bridget has two left feet. Her mother was tall and willowy while she is short and her mother always made her feel like she wasn’t good enough. Then she was abducted by aliens and ended up on an ice planet.

The Hero: A'tam - He is of the shadow cat clan, is arrogant, confident and inexperienced with women. When he sees Bridget, he knows right away that she is the one for him and doesn’t care that they aren’t resonating for each other. He wants to be her mate anyway.

The Story: Bridget is attracted to A’tam from the beginning and gets to know him from the start but she has very low self esteem and when the first time they are intimate with one another, things don’t go perfectly, she assumes their anatomy is just not compatible and kicks him to the curb. Her low self esteem comes up more than once in different ways, but A’tam keeps trying with her.

Though when a new woman arrives on the ice planet and starts spending time with A’tam, Bridget is consumed with jealousy. I saw quite a few other reviews and it seems a lot of people didn’t like Bridget much. Though I didn’t mind her so much. A lot of people have low self esteem and it is a process to get over something like that, especially if it begins at home when a person is young. So I guess I understood some of her issues.

However, her misunderstanding about what happened when she was intimate with A’tam was funny. She calls a certain part of his anatomy Goliath and thinks that maybe Goliath is too big for her or she is too small. I also liked the story about her wanting to contribute to the group and how she tried and tried. She is trying to create pottery for the tribe, but she can’t seem to get the clay right or the baking, and keeps at it.

The book was told in dual points of view using dual narration by Felicity Munro and Sean Crisden. They do a good job but I like duet narration better where the male does all the male parts and the female does all the female parts. In dual narration it is done by chapter. Also I thought it was a bit odd that A’tam sounds like he has a eastern European accent.

I hate being the voice of dissent, but I can't say that I really enjoyed this. I had high hopes for this couple, but it really was a pity-party for a girl that had huge mommy issues- and believed her hot-pocket was so abnormally small that she could not anatomically fit A'Tam's pepperoni.
So much could have been done with the couple given their history, but instead we're in the front seat to couples therapy (no joke), and Bridget's constant paranoia that she'll be gossiped about by the tribe for anything and everything she does.
The author attempts to make A'Tam equally culpable for the problems, and other than him being the worst lay in the world due to being a virgin and only grasping the basic mechanics of the act, it just doesn't ring true. Bridget was singularly interested in her own thoughts and feelings, and A'tam just fed off of whatever scraps of attention she could give him.
The majority of the book I was rooting for him to dump B-shit and get with literally anyone else. Someone who wasn't afraid of holding his hand in public.
I know I'm ranting, but I waited a lonnnnng time for this book. I knew they'd have issues and arguments going into this, because that's them- and that didn't bother me. It was giving Bridgette the troubled backstory to 'enrich' her character, and be the foundation of all the conflict in the book. This could have been fun, but we were treated to the mommy-issue trope that is in so many other books out there. Reading is supposed to be an escape, but this just didn't fit the bill.

There were parts of this I didn't really enjoyed. But I liked how much they tried to fix their relationship by the end and working together.

2 - 2.5 missed opportunity stars

Maybe I was expecting too much with this one, but the banter between A'tam and Bridget in the earlier books in this series had me really anxious to get to this one, but once I got here.... not so much.

If you haven't read my earlier reviews on books in this series, I will reiterate: this is NOT a standalone kind of series as the books are all interconnected, and in this case, there has been an ongoing situation between the MCs that began as soon as the islanders arrived on the ice planet. Though they didn't resonate with each other, they did "hook-up" once early on, and for Bridget, it was TERRIBLE. Horribly painful and humiliating. And somehow A'tam thought it 1 - amazing, and 2 - meant they are supposed to be together, so he has refused to leave her alone despite her scathing rejections.

The central issue to all of this angst is miscommunication and the lack of ANY form of knowledge of foreplay on A'tam's part. I was pretty frustrated with Bridget because she came across as very immature - not actually discussing the issues with A'tam, but instead insulting him and blaming him without any benefit of the doubt that he really didn't know any better. It was also annoying that it took 3/4's of the book for Bridget to realize that the issue really can't be that her lady parts are too small to accommodate his pants anaconda since women give birth to babies that are a lot larger.

Once the H/h actually got on the same page, things were fine, but I just felt this could have been much better if there were actual communication happening vs the weird therapy sessions with Steph who took some psych classes and thinks she is now a qualified couple's counselor.

Plot --- 2/5
Main Characters --- 3/5
Supporting Cast --- 3.5/5
Steam Level* --- 3.5/5
Violence --- nothing overly graphic or major
Language --- yes! (lots of f-bombs and c-bombs)
POV --- Dual

*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild (nothing descriptive); 2/5 - 3rd base action/1 home run; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere (a couple of full-on steamy scenes); 4/5 - yes please! (erotica territory); 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all

This is the first Ruby Dixon book that has irritated me with its repetitiveness. If I had to read about A'tam's battering ram dick ONE MORE TIME I would've had to DNF.

I'm also curious about how many UTIs the cooties have had to fight off during the span of these books. The hygiene practices are just... really not sufficient.

3.5 stars - Ok, while I do wish that there was a little bit of the back and forth miscommunication was cut from the front half of the book, I have to say I am INTO this deconstruction of the notorious miscommunication trope! And it getting resolved through Ice Planet couples therapy???? I STAN! Love the ideas in this one

Enjoyed it for the most part.
Bridget’s insecurity came off a bit paranoid at times and I did get frustrated about it in places but it wasn’t all that bad overall.

There’s not much else to say about this because in my opinion all the books in this series and the main series as well, are one of the same but tweaked in terms of the characters’ personalities and the some plot changes.

It’s good

Ruby is an amazing writer but I just didn’t like Bridget. Too much has happened in the series. I wanted better for A’tam. The writing is phenomenal as always. This heroine just wasn’t for me.

Bridget’s Bane is book twelve in the Icehome series by Ruby Dixon. This series needs to be read in order.

Bridget & A’Toms relationship has been presented throughout the books in the series, so we have seen a bit of their “not so relationship,” how they interact together, and how they interact with the tribe.

Honestly I didn’t care for Bridget the moment she had a meltdown about her and A’toms one night together. This turned me off on her. It was ridicules.

This story wasn’t the best for me. It has to do with their lack of communication and how neither A’tom nor Bridget can communicate. If they could just talk to each other than their relationship would have be so much better. They do go to therapy with Steph, but man Bridget has a lot of hangups and major issues.

As for our hero, A’tom, he’s got a strong personality and he didn’t take the time to listen. He think’s it’s his way only.

Bridget’s Bane was not my favorite. I had a lot of issues with this one and the two lead characters. I’m glad it’s over and I’m hoping the next Icehome novel is more enjoyable.

I just found these two super annoying. Bridget is incredibly insecure, kind of clueless and stubborn. A’tam is cocky, kind of insufferable and can’t listen to save his life. The miscommunication was outstandingly annoying because if Bridget could just be honest or A’tam would have actually taken in anything Bridget did manage to say this book would’ve been way shorter. Also I’m over finding the aliens mispronunciations of the humans name’s cute/funny. Last book with ‘Er-vin’ I was like who the fuck is that and it was Raven and then this book Bridget was ‘Bree-shit’ and no matter how many times she said he was pronouncing it wrong and it clearly upset her he thought she was lying about how to say it?? Idgi. But hearing a guy call her “shit” for an entire book got really old. This was also the second time I thought we were getting the single alien dad book and it wasn’t but this time I’m confident it’s next…in IH anyway, I’m reading the combined IPB/IH order so I still have to wait, but hopefully it’s good haha.

OK, so this was a rollercoaster of a read for me. I went from disliking the hero to thinking he was a real cinnamon roll. And from liking the sassy, snarky heroine we saw brief glimpses of in other Ice Home books to wanting to strangle her stupidly stubborn a** then understanding her reasons for the stupid and pulling for her again to work out with the hero. This even had one of my least favorite tropes, misunderstanding as one of the main plot points and yet the author made it work. And can I just say that if they can figure out how to do couples therapy on a friggin Ice Planet why can't they in the majority of contemporary romance novels?

4.5 Totally Worth the Wait Stars
I feel like most of us have been waiting for Bridget's story fooooorever! Well the time finally came and I got to say it was everything and more than I wanted. I realize the misconceptions I had about A'tam and Bridget's relationship was all wrong and seeing it from the perception of others did nothing to help that. The two have an immediate attraction that Bridget is not ashamed of and they become quick friends. As we all know the two hook up but since that one time Bridget has been standoffish and rude to A'tam making her appear like the enemy and I hate to say it but a tease. These men are not like Earth men and they bond/mate right away. The thought of having a female of their own is all that matters to them and resonance or not A'tam is ready to commit himself to Bridget after that one night. However let's just say A'tam is cocky, arrogant and more importantly ignorant of women, particularly Earth women with our weird hang-ups let's call them. This book is longer than most and while the action is low, the emotions are high as is the tension between the two. I absolutely loved this book and once again I'm ready and already waiting for the next one!

Quick(ish) Review

What happens when you’re very attracted to another person but things go south at first hookup? That’s exactly what happens between Bridget and A’tam and this book really delves into the fallout of that first disastrous time. I like that in a series that takes instalove and uses it as a starting point, this examines the usual immediate physical compatibility and turns it on its head.

Bridget has a lot of hang ups instilled by her mother, and A’tam is a stereotypical good looking guy who can be thoughtless and impatient. They start with a lot of attraction bu absolutely no ability to talk and listen. They are deeply flawed but you get to see them learn to communicate and get past their issues. And I loved that their “therapy” isn’t a one and done but critical part of their road to an HEA. It’s a different take on the Planet Blue Balls resonance and I enjoyed myself, even when I wanted to knock some sense into both those knuckleheads because I understood them both. This series keeps getting better and that’s an achievement by Ms. Dixon. I liked this a lot and I’d recommend it.

I recommend the earlier Icehome books. I really did not like Bridget's character. She has intimate relations with the hero, then tells everyone it was bad and she didn't like it. She does not tell the hero. Hero has no idea why she doesn't want to sleep with him again. He is hurt and confused.

So they just fight all the time. Until another human woman says they should go to counseling (she is one) and talk things out.

Bridget could have discussed how hero was a virgin and he hurt her without meaning too by being too rough and having a large male appendage. Instead she spends half the book whining to everyone else about it.

I thought the hero deserved better. I was actually more interested in the pottery they were trying to make instead of their romance, since romance was awful.

Again, I really enjoyed the earlier Icehome books, read those.

IINCREDIBLE

I honestly think every new book is my favorite one but this one hits a certain spot for me. The fact that this pairing seemed to have been doomed from the start but was fixed by COMMUNICATION makes it so much more real and it played my heart strings so much more.
I mean, how often does a bad thing happen in a book because of the lack of communication?
*The answer is too many...*
I think this one was incredible especially when talking about the fact that "bad" sex comes from arrogance and lack of communication, a message that people need to hear.
I know that this one was a doozy in terms or Ruby having had a rough time but I have to say that the wait was most definitely worth it.
I would definitely recommend this one to just about anyone.

Out of the whole series I was dreading Bridget's story the most. I'll be honest with you, I highly disliked her throughout the other books. She was so annoying, so frustrating... That I thought I'll be absolutely miserable reading this book.

Oh, how grateful I am to be mistaken. Out of the 13 books I actually felt the most connected to this heroine. I cried for her, I felt for her with all my heart and then I was happy for her and her happy ending. This story was the most leveled of them all, showing actual difficulties and feeling of one's failure and not all honey and roses. I enjoyed the therapy sessions and our couple's realisations of their mistakes.

The whole book was simply beautiful.

Bridget's bane de Ruby Dixon Serie Icehome libro 13

Argumento:
