Keeping Score

Rate this book
One more careless mistake and I could lose the career I’ve worked my entire life for—I could lose everything. My last year has been wrapped in one scandal after another, and I’m done. Done with the jersey chasers. And done with women… for the time being.Or so I thought. Sophie Thomas, a local magazine photographer, is my undoing. She’s bright, she’s funny, and her very being just draws me in. I know I need to stay away, but there’s something about her—a sadness almost—that keeps pulling me back to her.Maybe I’m not quite as done with everything as I once believed.

A debut author, but this book did NOT read like a debut. Fantastic -- beginning to end! Definitely recommend it to sports romance fans!

Keeping Score was a very enjoyable and cute sports romance read.
Braxton and Sophie’s story pulled me in and their journey was really interesting.
The story was very well written and had an unexpected twist that was uncommon and intriguing.
However, Sophie’s decisions and the push and pull between main characters slightly lowered my interest and I wanted more depth with the characters’ development as well as with Sophie’s relationship with her father.

REVIEW: 3.5+ STARS

It's a very sticky line for me to agree to read books by friends. I am always objective - but I want it known that I have a personal relationship with this author, but it will not affect my rating on this book. I have always prided myself on my ability to stay objective and respectful with my reviews.

Having said this, I want to say that I really enjoyed this debut book by Alyssa Kale. The bones of the actual story, the background - the storyline, were really good. Have we read this type of story before? Sure. Any sports romance reader has read about the athlete that doesn't want to settle down but meets 'her' and his world changes and he has to 'realize' what he has. I don't read formulaic with both eyes open...but this one, it didn't come across overwhelmingly that way. It didn't feel like I was rolling my eyes and skipping along to get to the HEA I knew was there. Nope. I was enjoying it from the minute I opened it until I finished. It was an easy read with plenty of smiles and some swooniness along the way. I would definitely say this was a win for me.

The fact that I have read this type of story before but didn't want to put it down told me all I needed to know. It flowed easily, even given some of the repetitive nature of some of the statements and points being made. It was a breath of fresh air for the fact that it had characters that were relatable, hardships that were recognizable, and a reality that was as dreamy as they come. I honestly adored these characters. Just an easy, sexy little read that provided some light entertainment.

And I will say this, I think this is only my.....second? baseball romance and I LOVED it. I love sports romance in general, but it was fun reading a sport I don't generally watch or pay attention to, and I won't lie and say it didn't have me smiling while looking at the players and their baseball pants while the game was on the TV at the restaurant the other night. {{insert evil grin}}

"God, that butt. Thank you to whoever designed baseball pants. They really do make everything better."

And much can be said about her characters. they weren't one dimensional, but they were simple and likable. I loved Braxton so much. He had honest faults and true emotions that came out when they were necessary. His actions were all male and I found myself laughing at him, with him, and for him. He was a real easy character to fall in love with. I did appreciate that her Hero's voice didn't sound overly feminine and I cannot tell you enough how much I am very thankful for that. I have DNF'd many books where the Hero sounds too feminine and very unlikely in the way he thinks. And.....and he was about as subtle as a bull in a china shop! His comments had me laughing a few times.

But, the same can be said about Sophie. She was a great, strong and stubborn heroine. I followed her heart and the way her mind worked. I understood her hesitance, but also wanted to shake her for her unwavering stubbornness. I knew what she was thinking but also wanted her to see the light. She was relatable in her strength, but also in her perseverance. I felt an emotional connection to her for the situation she was in, and I loved that Kale gave two varying misunderstandings on the primary situation, which allowed me to see both sides with equal thoughts.

So, a little robotic in some spots, a little formulaic in others - not necessarily a 'been there, done that' kind of read, and I knew what was going on, but I still wanted to keep reading. I felt there was a bit of telling rather than showing, but not so far as to distract and detract from the overall enjoyment of it. She gave me everything I needed in a SWEET read, and she did it well. Again, I don’t do these willingly - but this one really worked for me. It was just the right ease in between the heavy and angsty reads I crave and read regularly. It was seriously the best light-hearted read I have read in a while. I really did enjoy these characters and this book, and I feel like Kale has plenty of stories left in her. I hope she will continue to share her words because I can't wait to read more by her.

She gave me two characters that I could fall in love with.
She gave me a story that I never stopped smiling while reading.
She gave me a HEA that I just knew was going to be blissful and happy.

I'm a happy....

Never would I have guessed that this is Alyssa's debut novel had I not known. Before I even go into my thoughts I just want to say a huge congratulations to her because damn she really did that. What a phenomenal achievement, all her hard work has truly payed off and her first book baby really is a great start to what I can only imagine being a wonderful and successful future as a author.

Keeping score is a sports romance with a few sneaky twists. As a whole it's a easy sweet read. I enjoyed most of this book happily and like I said, I would never say that this reads like a debut book normally does. It's a really great foundation to build from with multidimensional characters and a unique spin on sports romance.

I really loved Braxton. I think he's a really well rounded character as whole with a lot of likability. He'll definitely be a hit with readers. He's got that sweet swoonworthy personality with a good dose of sexy alpha that has you loving him hard quickly. I loved that even in his less finer moments he isn't to prideful to admit when he's wrong and apologise. I adored the way he delt with unexpected circumstances and rode it out like a pro when most in his situation would pack up and run. He's a little guarded and with good reason but it only adds more quirk to his character. I loved him.

Sophie is a girls girl through and through. She didn't have an easy ride from the get go in this story and I truly felt for her. She's sweet and a little flighty but all round a likeable and easily relatable character. I adored her close relationship with her dad and I freaking love her friendship with Kendall, every girl needs a best friend like that for sure. As a whole I like her but I have to be honest and say I like Braxton more.

Their journey is definitely a rollercoaster of many ups and downs with a fair few oh shit moments thrown in between. Their chemistry was palpable from the first meeting and it was easy to believe in them and their connection because when they were together it just felt so easy between them. Ohh the tensions of it all!!! These two are HAWTTTTT. oh and the ending.... fucking perfection. Legit everything I wanted and them some.

Now like I said as a whole I really enjoyed this book but there was a few things I feel like I missed or frustrated me..

Sophie's reaction or more so the back and forth thing did frustrate me. I get it truly because of everything but I would be lying if I said it didn't bother me. I found myself annoyed with her lack of understanding to Braxton reactions and the fact he seemed to do all the apologising. She was perfectly human but it grated on me a smidge.

There is a few timeline jumps and I would have loved a little more in certain parts. I felt cut off a little to quickly. Although this could be me being a greedy bitch too, I have been known to be that when I'm enjoying a story.

That's it though!. I really did enjoy Braxton and Sophie's journey. It's sweet, swoony and definitely unpredictable. The story has depth and substance and it flows really well. The characters are likeable and relatable and it's easy to imagine everything that's going on. I felt all the good feels and was completely immersed in their world for a few short hours and I was definitely sad it ended.

A fab read and I'd definitely recommend. Oh and it's safe. I wouldn't say there is anything that would trigger anyone in here.

Also... Jared can suck a bag of dicks. What a dicktwat he was.

I would never believe this was a debut book. Sophie and Brax are both scorned by love but he is a world famous baseball player and she's late to photograph him.

Sophie might not have known the secret her boyfriend had but thanks to forgetting a lens, she gets a clear vision that he is not her future. I love how you can relate to her. She's not perfect but she deserves some respect and to not be left in the dark.

Braxton is a bit of a mystery. He's dealing with a bad past relationship and feels that baseball is not a place to have a wife or girlfriend. So he thinks he got it figured out. Keep it simple, satisfaction for both with no attachments.

That all changes when their world's collide. Too bad the walls are built way too high on both ends. But love can be a bulldozer when it's obviously meant to be.

This one throws a few curve balls, slowly gets the bases loaded and then BOOM...we get an HEA home run.

I received an ARC for an honest and voluntarily review.

The authors debut book with a professional baseball player, Braxton is mending his reputation so he absolutely needs no drama circling him. He meets Sophie and while they didn't have the "hearts and rainbows" kinda meeting, there is just something about her and he can't get out of his mind. Sophie is getting over a *$% of an exboyfriend and trying to focusing on her photography career, never did she expect to have feelings for Braxton. As time goes on, these two spend time together and its inevitable the feelings and chemistry they have.

I really enjoyed seeing this guy go all in with Sophie. But of course things are never smooth sailing. Sophie has found out some news that could tear the two of them apart. I'm surprised this was the authors debut book. I loved how they got to know each other and became friends before feelings caught. They grew to really need each other for all aspects of their lives.

There were parts of this that I really enjoyed, I liked Braxton and Sophie as characters and I liked the story overall.

I also struggled with this in places. I thought there were some issues with timeline and how much time actually passed vs. how much time was passing based on the events in the story. There were some places where it bothered me enough to pull me out of the story.

That said, the writing itself was strong. And, I do think it was impressive for a first novel and constructed rather well, aside from the issues with the timeline.

I am looking forward to the next title in the series and I do recommend this one.

4.5 SMOOCHES!

Keeping Score is Alyssa Kale’s debut novel, and I loved this author’s sassy, steamy storytelling style! I always give a new indie author a lot of leeway with their debut novels, but I really didn’t need to do that here. Alyssa’s writing was engaging, brimming with endearing characters and a sexy, baseball-themed romance that was so addictive, I had a hard time putting my Kindle down.

Keeping Score was a well-paced, deliciously slow burning romance. The plot packed a double-play of emotion and humor, and there was one heck of a twist looming in the background that had the potential to change everything. I love the friends-to-lovers trope, and this author’s take on it was refreshing and unique with a bit of a second-chance feel to the story. She did a great job building the romance between a hero and heroine who had both been burnt by betrayals and were taking it slow even as the chemistry between them burned hot.

I’m thoroughly impressed with Alyssa Kale’s writing, and I absolutely loved her debut novel, Keeping Score. There is a whole lot of humor, heart and heat to be found on the pages of Keeping Score, and I absolutely devoured every single word of it. If this is what we can expect from Alyssa Kale right out of the gate, not only can she count me as a fan, but I’m very eager for more from this talented new author. Keeping Score by Alyssa Kale gets 4.5 smooches from me!

Keeping Score is the debut book of the new and upcoming author Alyssa Kale!
Can you tell that it’s her debut book? No, absolutely not! The writing is flawless, on point, the story held my attention with a few twists and turns, and the emotions were real!

Braxton is the 1st baseman from the Aces, and due to an unfortunate incident he needs to work on his reputation. At a photo shoot with a magazine, he meets Sophie the photographer, who’s an hour late. She had a morning from hell, and is now having issues with an angry ball player!

A few days later they meet again in a bar, but she tells him flat out no, which is a totally new concept for Braxton! So he’s more than a bit intrigued!

Sophie has her own troubles, and needs to come to term with them first, before she can open up potentially to someone new.

I love their story a lot. How they become friends, and Braxton can finally open up because Sophie is just interested in him, and not his fame. There’s a lot of tension and chemistry between these two, and it’s pure fire.

I kindly received an arc from the author and voluntarily left a review

This book. My heart. My soul! OMG the raw emotions that are threaded through this story had me devouring the book. Honestly, once I started, I could not put it down. Between the concept, the fluidity and the character build in this story had me totally wrapped up into everything that is Braxton and Sophie. I adored everything from the moment they met each other, to how their relationship builds to how things totally play out. As this story flows, you feel that intense connection that these two have. With how their history plays into their present, my heart aches for both of them with everything they have endured. There are also some amazing twists and turns that will keep you on your toes as well which added so much depth to it.
Overall, as a debut novel, you would never ever know it. It flows amazingly, the concept was brilliant. You root for these two the whole time even with the bumps that happen, literally! I adored the sizzle of the passion, the raw emotions that flow between these two, the push and pull while fighting their feelings! Kale knocked it out of the park with this one and I am dying to get more from this author! If you want a brilliant baseball story with an epic leading lady and a swoon worthy hero, then give this book a chance! It is definitely a top read of 2020 for me!

The storyline of this book was really good and I enjoyed the story overall. This is a slow burn romance that had some great side characters. This is a debut novel for this author and I look forward to seeing her grow as a writer.

For me, this book felt a little choppy at times and the timelines were a big issue for me. I had to step back a few times to figure it out. There was also a lot of repetitiveness to the point where I began to skim those parts.

I really enjoyed the characters. Brax was swoon worthy and I was rooting for him the whole time. Sophie was a hard character to love at times. I completely understand how she was feeling but I got frustrated with her for not being honest with him. She had plenty of moments where she could have told him the truth but instead she tried to distance herself from him yet still dangling hope in his direction. Her best friend was amazing and I hope we get her story.

I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

Sophie and Braxton meet on the worst day of her adult life and things do not go well. I really love Braxton for his kindness and his loving nature and for his perseverance. Maybe Sophie should have more faith faster. I feel in my heart for what happened to Braxton. There is good reason for his current outlook on life. Poor Sophie, what she endures makes me mad. Their chemistry is like a flash fire and I love the slow burn as they take their time while taking a second chance. Kendall is a great best friend. I wish we got more in sight into Laura and mom in the ending or the epilogue. These two earned their 4.5 stars.

I would have never thought this was a debut novel. Alyssa Kale writes like a seasoned writer.~Lana~White Hot Reads

This book has all the feels for a sweet romance. Braxton Lee is the hottest first baseman who gets a taste of sweet and loving Sophie, who just happens to be the one who gets to take his picture for her magazine. After a horrible start to their introduction, Braxton realizes he was completely rude to Sophie so he decides to send her a nice gesture. After this, he can't get enough of her. There are some twist and turns you don't see coming but in the end it all works out. I truly enjoyed this book. Well done Alyssa!!!

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, as it was the first I had read from this author, but i really enjoyed it!! All the usual tropes that sometimes turn me off of a book, but done in a really good way that added to the story instead of feeling like too much. Brax ended up being a really likable H, Sophie was a little harder to rally around, she sometimes came off as whiny & made some decisions that annoyed me, but I could at least understand why she did them. Overall, I enjoyed the book &will look for more work from this author. :)

Pros:
Sophie was cool and the beginning of the book was good
Braxton was dreamy and he fixed his mistakes in a proper way
Scenario was refreshing (I love baseball too)

Cons:
Least favorite trope EVER
Sophie acting really really idiotic by the end of the book, by reading Braxton’s mind and deciding for him without actually talking to him, and despite every single sign that he was in love with her. I hated that she kept going on and on about what he was (more likely) going to do, even when he proved otherwise all the time.
Everything seemed rushed toward the ending, so ...

Other than that, I did like it.

This debit book was phenomenal!

Writing was superb.
Plot yanked my heart out and put it back by the end!

Braxton has had a rough go of it with a Jersey chaser and is a little on the angry side as he has a year of publicity stunts to repair his image!

Sophie thinks she with the man she’ll marry when she finds him in a scandalous position.

Neither are wanting or in a place to find their happily ever after but sometimes true love just doesn’t care!!

Loved this so much! Easily one of my top 2020 reads!

Highly recommend!

It's a very sweet story.
I loved Brax and his development. I think we can see very well a boy become a man by owning his flaws (and by flaws I mean his rudeness in the beginning) and later his feelings.
I would loved to see more about Sophie's dad, Spencer and Laura. Maybe in a future book?

I know it's a mean thing to do, but I couldn't rate it higher because of the typos and some confusing sintaxes. If I (with English not being my native language) was able to spot them it saddens me that the people who read the book before it being edited didn't corrected them.

The book was so easy to read, and I loved Braxton’s journey from who he was with Amber and who he is with Sophie, but the reasons that Sophie wanted to stay away got too repetitive for me to really enjoy the story. I understand being worried, but it felt like I was reading the same problem over and over again.
