Who does not love a good old scary story? A nice collection of urban ghost stories focused around a run-down neighborhood in the Moscow center in the period from 1980’s to early 1990’s. A great love song to all those tales whispered by children in the playground about the dangers of picking up strange objects from the ground and bringing them home, old fortune-tellers, beasts that hide in the basement and inability to sometimes say goodbye and move away from comforting and at the same time - destructive past. Salt of the Earth – 5/5 This one is probably my favorite. The life of an elderly lonely man is changed when a new housekeeper from the countryside moves into his apartment. She takes care of the household, and the man becomes enamored by her cooking, which is spiced by a mysterious black salt. Strange pagan rites, looming threat from a person who seemingly wishes you well and tasty meat pies. Warning: there is certain amount of gore. Tetter - 5/5 Another story that might be irksome for a gentler reader. A school kid is trapped in the basement by the bullies and in the darkness comes across a strange creature. After accidently touching it and running back home, the boy notices a strange red spot that starts to expand rapidly. Really interesting relationship dynamic between the boy and his grandmother, as the metamorphosis sets in. Umr the Great 4/5 Lesson learned: do not pick up old newspaper clippings in the street and if you do, do not enter into correspondence with a mysterious pen friend from the previous century. Other lesson learned: dysfunctional families are just as dangerous as strangers. Downside: I was left wanting for more details about the weird boogeyman and its origins. Through and Through – 3/5 The life at the boarding school for disabled kids starts to change after the arrival of a new headmaster who believes he can heal the kids using new experimental methods. Interesting idea about the burden of expanded consciousness, however the idea of aliens and rushed ending ruined the general impression. Rosa Ada – 4/5 Story of friendship and sisterhood with a twist of extraordinary abilities of one of the girls. Quite refreshing in the middle of the book to have a story where the danger comes from the main character, not some external monstrosity. Also loved the wordplay of “Rose of Hell/Rosa Ada (names of two girls). Suiter – 4/5 The family of fortune tellers, who appear almost in every story one way or another and try to fight the evil forces (often – unsuccessfully) now are haunted themselves by the spirit in the mirror after one of the fortune tellers performs a ritual to summon the image of her future fiancé. More sad than scary. Living conditions 2/5 Too many characters, a poltergeist that never really does any consistent damage (except for giving a blue eye to some poor man in the bathroom), and a bit absurd reason behind all the hauntings. It was supposed to be funny, I guess, but to me it felt too flat. Cutters – 2/5 Another story about aliens. Maybe it is just not my theme… Hoped till the very end that there might be more menacing reason behind leaving around those animal plush toys and words spoken by the kids in lethargic dream. Nope, there wasn’t. Bank - 3/5 Destruction of the old neighborhood by the modern ruthless world with its banks and bandits. Came across a quote from another book I’m currently reading that seems to perfectly summarize the idea of the story “The empire long united must divide, long divided must unite; this is how it has always been”. The stand between the monsters of the neighborhood and the office workers is satisfying to read. To sum up: light and entertaining collection of stories that will tickle your nerves and make you nostalgic for the childhood days and monsters under bed.
