Joined Audible in Japan recently, only to realise that it is a subscription service (i.e. you can listen to any books on offer, as much as you like, which is great!) but that English titles are few and far between.

Now, I read Japanese to the level where I can read novels without too much difficulty (for example, I read Murakami's "Tsukuru Tazaki" novel in Japanese...from the local library), but audiobooks seemed like the last and most-intimidating frontier. With paper books, you can easily look up a word or track back in a sentence or paragraph (useful in Japanese, where I sometimes lose track of who is speaking or what we are speaking about, due to the subject of the sentence often being left out!).

I thought it might be best, therefore, to dip my toe into Audible's pool of Japanese audiobooks with a much-loved novel I'd read (and taught) many times in English. So I popped on "Kafka on the Shore" and there it was, that story I'd enjoyed so many times before in English translation. Wasn't a problem to listen to at all...very enjoyable, in fact...and quite fascinating to experience it this time in Japanese.

(I actually once encountered the scene between Nakata and the cats in the reading comprehension section of the JLPT...Japanese Language Proficiency Test...which must have seriously thrown off anyone who hadn't read the book before, regardless of their level of Japanese!).

The next test, of course, will be to listen to a Japanese audiobook that I've never read in English. Gonna pick a short one and see how it goes!
