Shard

Rate this book
The team is everything. The team is sacred. And I have failed mine.

The Pit is the place for monsters. The worst of the worst.

I belong here. The Fells do not.

They intend to win their freedom, and they need me to do it, even if it means lying to everyone I've become their Shard. Even if it means leaving ScatheFire behind. Even if it means marrying one or all of them when this is over, and agreeing to whatever terms Blood sets.

But the Warden has no intention of letting me go, and he's determined to break what's left of my will and own my Aether-bound husk for himself. The Fells are powerless to stop the torment, and I am alone to endure it. I don't need to be their Heart or their Shard to know that their souls are crumbling under the nightmare they're living.

I have to be strong for all of us, but I don't have much time, and I'll have to ask them to give up the only thing that's kept them alive: their hope.

Epic dark fantasy medium-burn "it's complicated" love-hate reverse harem romance featuring a broken heroine who doesn't want to be put back together.

4.25 ⭐️/3.5 🌶️—A great continuation of a very weird (but really unique) series. The author does an amazing job with characterization and relationship building. As of 2025, the last two books haven’t been released in the series, which is unfortunate because it is a compelling series and I want to know how it ends.

Well these two books threw me for a surprise !!! Especially since I dont particularly like young male characters but this bunch has gone thru so much that I feel they have old souls...

This, for me, was the kind of book in which the characters kind of become part of your temporary family where you kind of worry about them and are really happy when you can spend time with them. When I read the second book, I knew book 3 wasn't available yet... So I ended up pacing myself and taking breaks from reading, dreading the end...

I also ended up having to eat quite a few chocolate chip cookies to lift my spirits up after I finished and couldn't continue reading the rest of the story.

Book two picks up where book one left off and we are thrown into it once again.

Crystal can't let ScatheFire up.
No matter how many times the other Fells tell her he isn't there anymore.
He was her first true friend and she will do anything to save him.
With the chance to win her freedom, and those of her Fells, on the line, things become complicated.
But Crystal knows she will never get out of The Pit.
Yet, she also knows that the Fells do not belong here.
She will do what needs to be done to save their innocence.
Even if it means killing again.

This is just one emotional roller-coaster that I can't get off of.
Crystal has NEVER known a kind hand and to see her accept what is happening to her again and again is heartbreaking.
It's evens sadder to see her not understand simple kind gestures.
We get glimpses into how she was raised, but we don't know the full story.
I have a feeling it is going to be exceptionally awful.

The Fells are great.
I love their characters.
And I love seeing how they are responding to Crystal.
They are having to pretend she is their Shard, their center.
But as time passes on, I think that it might not be so much faking.

In book one, we had the four original Fells.
ScatheFire, Smoke, Rot, and Blood.
However, I think we are going to see a fifth member join that harem.
And things will definitely get interesting with him in the mix.

It ends on a cliffhanger and I'm dying to know what will happen next.
Crystal and the Fells pulled off the impossible and things are about to get super interesting.

Highly recommend this series.
If you haven't started it yet, go do it now.
You won't regret it.

I LOVE THIS ORIGINAL STORY!

This story has pulled me in since I read the Blurb for Crystal, it is so original and interesting I just can't get enough! Can't wait to get my hands on Heart. Awesome work!

Continuing straight on from Crystal, Shard continues the adventure(for lack of a better descriptor) of Crystal and her fells.
Looking forward to Heart, to see how this plays out.

The Warden has a lot of connections, so I can’t see this ending easily.

Just sick of hearing her self degradation!

Most of the harem are still acting like arseholes and I’m just not feeling it!! I spent most of book skim reading.

Not enough ScatheFire but I like the new addition.

Summary: Crystal gets tortured by the Warden and they try to figure out what's going on in the prison.

Wish it were better

I continue to enjoy the concept and characters very much. Theres just so many technical issues. I hate that things that could have been fixed in editing have such a seriously negative impact to an otherwise really great story.

The over abundance of italicized words tapers off toward the end. Its still not great, and is very distracting, but the begining is the worst part of that.

There are some vaguely contradictory statements that happen. It was mildly annoying. It wasnt so blatant that I couldn't over look it though so it wasn't a huge issue, but still an issue nonetheless.

I think my biggest complaint would be the repetition. A statement would be made and then reiterated in the next paragraph sometimes with the exact same wording. Like once or twice I could see as an honest mistake but it happened so often I began to wonder if it was intentional. It was pretty annoying and would drag me out of an otherwise very immersive scene sometimes.

These technical issues are so fixable that its frustrating. This plot, characters, and setting should be an easy 5 stars but because it was technically flawed I just can't.

The setting is so interesting and beautifully described that I often feel like I'm actually there. The plot rolls forward with a steady and engaging pace (there was a couple minor places where there's too much exposition but its not too bad) and the characters are deep, dynamic, and relatable. I really love this whole thing so much it kills me to not give it 5 stars but it needs work and so here we are.

I will definitely continue the series, I really want to see where this is going. I do hope that the issues improve but they won't stop me from reading this very enjoyable series of books.
