Starts out strong but quickly devolves into Silly, new adult, glitter kink. The world building has more holes than swiss cheese. Skimmed the last 3rd.

2023 reads, #4. A growing amount of my freelance clients are the authors of cheap quick genre novels, meant to be consumed by their audience through the Kindle Unlimited program (a relatively new feature of Amazon, in which for one flat monthly fee, members can read as many quick cheap genre novels as they can possibly get through in 30 days); and so that has me starting to heavily read in these specialized genres for the first time in my life, especially when it comes to crime, fantasy and romance books, since I've never been a natural fan of these particular genres myself in my personal life, which means I have a lot of catching up to do if I want to service my clients as well as I can. So for example, early this week I got the latest promotional email from marketing company BookFunnel.com, which a couple of my clients use, letting me know of the latest hundred or so romance books that I can now download for free through their service, in return for signing up for these authors' newsletters; and instead of ignoring it like I usually do, this time I went over and actually downloaded seven titles from the unending page of identical overly Photoshopped covers of shirtless hunky badboys, and thought I would try blazing through them as fast as possible just to get an idea of what the average KU customer goes through when hunting and pecking through these endless slush piles themselves.

This is now my seventh and last book of this run (see also Victoria Lewis' Wild Nights , Ellis O. Day's The Voyeur , Pearl Tate's Mate Exposed , Cecelia Mecca's The Blacksmith , Candy Quinn's Shipwrecked Beauty , and Bella Beaumont's Can't Stop Won't Stop ), and I'm relieved to say that it's far and away the best of all seven; in fact, I can state with no hesitation that it's simply a great novel, full stop, no matter what genre you're talking about, and certainly is heads and shoulders above many of the urban fantasy novels I read last year when doing my first deep dive into that genre as well, including many books by supposed amazing writers from so-called mainstream presses (I'm looking at you, Jim freaking Butcher). One of the big reasons is that author Drusilla Swan isn't afraid to get her hands dirty here, and just gleefully throws herself into the full prurience and immense darkness that a BDSM story involving vampire doms enslaving the human race begs for.

In fact, this has been one of the big surprises of this reading series so far; that despite so many of these books supposedly embracing outrageous situations and subversive sexuality, most of the authors in the romance and erotica genre then pull back at the moment they should have thrown themselves forward, promising kinky adventures but then giving us the same ol' dumb boring vanilla sex, Valentine's Day teddy bears, and boyfriends washing the main character's hair in the bathtub. (Jesus, what is it with you ladies and your unending fascination for having your boyfriend wash your hair in the bathtub?!) Swan instead gives us the full monty her premise calls for, throwing us on page one into a filth-covered underground prison where kidnapped willowy young women are kept in deplorable conditions, for the purpose of being sold to vampires so they can be fucked to death and then bled for that night's dinner. Yeah, Swan ain't messing around, so that makes it all the more interesting when our reader stand-in hero Amanda (kinda mousy, kinda nerdy) is purchased by the head of one of the two major vampire "families" now running the planet (due to a magical orb the vampires acquired that completely blocks out the sun 24/7, allowing them to very easily overwhelm and then conquer the global human race), then is treated with the kind of "loving firm hand" that's so prevalent in BDSM romance novels, as her stoically gorgeous, emotionally stern master Alex slowly enfolds her into his life at the Paris castle he has taken over as his private home and family headquarters, where she learns that there's actually a lot more infighting, politics and drama among the vampires than the puny conquered humans have even guessed at (to say nothing of the rebel humans who have learned how to wield magic and act as a sort of terrorist antagonist to the vampires, eventually revealed as the actual villains because they have murderous contempt for the "weak, useless" other humans who haven't bothered to fight back).

That gets us into the other major thing that makes this book stand so much taller than the others I've read, which is that Swan goes to the trouble of actually building out a complex and compelling universe for her characters to inhabit, a deep and rich mythos involving underground demons in eastern Europe, thousands of years of vampire history, and other details that wouldn't be out of place at your local "Coniconicon" fantasy convention taking place each summer. The simple fact is that Swan's writing chops are high here, so much so that she could easily be a staff writer for a Peak TV kind of series like Buffy or X-Files; and that does nothing but highlight even more that so many of these other romance and erotica novels you find at these promotional websites are just real bottom-of-the-barrel stuff, churned out by the truckload and all of it just barely of high enough quality to justify its existence as a free read at Kindle Unlimited. I was relieved and gratified to come across a romance novelist who actually cares more about her audience than that, and who is committed to giving them the same kind of high-quality reading experience one might get with any mainstream book you'd find at a Barnes & Noble; and I have to confess that Swan now becomes the first romance author in history that I've actually given money to, so that I can read the further adventures of our plucky hero Amanda and see whether things work out for the seductively dark Diamantis family or not.

That now brings an end to my original run of seven novels; but I have to admit, I found the whole experience so fascinating, I went back to one of these promotional websites and downloaded an entire 30 more books, which I'll be continuing to make my way through this winter and spring in between my more usual titles. (Yes, friends, I know many of you have been getting sick of my detour into Romance Land this month; don't worry, Don Delillo's White Noise is coming next!) Please check out the "romance" tag at the top of this review to check out all the romance novels I end up reviewing; but for now, absolutely stop everything and go pick up a copy of this, a real highlight of the romance genre that will scratch every itch a paranormal or BDSM fan will have.

*KU Read
**First time reading author

I was just coming down from a book high and went searching for something different when I came across this book. I am so happy I did. Drusilla Swan wrote a vampire saga that is unusual from the rest. The vampires are harsh but because the world has ended to some point and the humans are not in control anymore the vamps are fighting between each other. They are in a fight to control the world and each other. But the Master Vampire needs a human mate to move forward.

I would highly recommend this story to anyone that likes a little different in their vampire story.

It was an okay book.
The story was good. It felt like parts of the plot were cut from the book, but it still flowed. The world building was interesting, but then it kind of dropped off. I would have loved a few chapters in the pov of the main MC as I think it would have filled in a lot of the world building and on situations

SUMMARY: (SPOILER WARNING)

The world has been overtaken by vampires and Amanda has been living in a cell with other human captives. When a master vampire comes to purchase her because she’s a virgin, she’s not sure if what’s to come will be better or worse than what she’s already endured.

It turns out the master vampire who purchased her (Alex) wants to have babies with her and make her his mate. The more time she spends with him the more she finds herself giving into his desires.

REVIEW:

So I’m pretty sure I picked this one up for my Kindle when it was a freebie. Kinda glad I didn’t spend money on it because it was…not good. Just all around really terrible.

The entire idea of the vampires taking over the world and destroying it honestly makes absolutely no sense. If humans are their primary food source, then why would they run the risk of them dying out? And if they managed to block out the sun AND the moon, then the earth (and humans) would die out quickly because both the sun and moon are essential to the survival of the earth (and humans).

But let’s just say that all those things didn’t factor in. The next question would be why? What is the purpose of bringing their main food source to the brink of extinction? And why now, when they’ve been around for thousands of years? Again, this makes no sense and the reason for it isn’t explained at all.

Then there’s the idea that this all powerful master vampire of one of the largest vampire clans in the world decides to pick a random human slave to be his mate. Amanda is told that he’s doing this to demonstrate his power and secure his position as leader of their clan. How? Any vampire could pick out and mate a random human. How does doing that secure his position at all?

And let’s not forget that he picked her specifically because she was a virgin and they’re apparently “extra sweet”. If that’s the case, then why didn’t he drink from her before having sex with her? Seems like a waste if he went out of his way to pick out a virgin for the better tasting blood.

Aside from the many plot holes, the story is very rushed, the characters are flat, and their relationship is very lackluster and unbelievable. There’s sex mixed in there too, but it’s so bland and boring.

Overall it’s just not good. I wouldn’t recommend it and don’t plan to read any of the others in the series (especially since they aren’t on KU).

Hooked on the series now

At first I didn't know what to think about the storyline. No spoilers here but I was caught up in this book. I couldn't read it fast enough and then I reached the end. I need to read the next book to continue with the story. Drusilla Swan has created a believable storyline that I know is totally fiction. It has elements of romance along with plenty of steamy scenes too. I found myself rooting for the characters to overcome their challenges and triumph.
Yes this book pulled me in. I think most people will enjoy it too.

Too short and a bit underdeveloped

Vampires rule the world now. They have found a way to block the sun (yeah, a bit of a reach here, but I am reading about mystical supernatural creatures, so who am I to judge?) so they have come out from the darkness to rule. And of course humans are relegated to chattel, slaves and “living blood bags.” Our FMC, Amanda was captured and sold at an auction. Her buyer, a wealthy, gorgeous vampire. You can probably guess how this ends.

I actually don’t mind formulaic stories . . . When they’re done well. I really liked the plot in this book, I just wish it was developed a bit more. World building and character building seemed incomplete. We know virtually nothing about any of the characters, except for the current events. I’d like to know more of their backstories. I want to be in their head and feel all the things. I was missing that here. The ending felt rushed and incomplete, as if the author was trying to beat the bell for recess and just ended it, whether it made sense or not.

I can say that it was a pretty fast read. But if you have other vampire stories on your TBR list, I’d recommend that you prioritize those first.

Entertaining but in extreme need of proofreading. Lots of awkward sentences, typos and poor syntax. My favourite example is "don't do anything brash" (captives should never be uncouth, naturally) but "the savoury soup was the perfect mix of savoury and tart" also comes to mind.

The addition of some segues is a must too. We really shouldn't be skipping forward days in the same paragraph without marking them in some way.

Also, the fixation on virginity is disappointing - to me at least. I find it inherently sexist that the hero's only requirement in his choice of someone to spend eternal life with is that no one else has fucked her.

To be frank, the characterisation is weak. The heroine's convictions (r.e. vampires and r.e. witches) change page by page where she has them at all. The hero is a bit more solid - brooding and domineering but not cruel - but could certainly use more fleshing out. I don't feel as though we know them well enough to justify their devotion.

it was fine…

I will start this by saying that I side-eye vampire stories pretty hard. It’s a mythical monster that has the most to overcome in my eyes. Having said that, the start of this story is gripping. The opening chapter was fantastic… and then I kinda got bored.

It wasn’t bad. But Amanda and Alex were just not interesting. I also have a problem with single POVs. It’s always nice to get the other “side” of the story. Amanda just didn’t have much to offer in the way of appeal.

Alex as a character was, again, fine. The heat between them was pretty tame. I wish there had been more build up, and world building, to the characters and story.

As a quick read, it’s not horrible. I have definitely read worse- but it didn’t make me suddenly a super fan of vampire books.

Dubcon, body betrayal, virgin trope. The vampire MMC bought and owns the FMC, could unalive her at any time, corrects her when she forgets to call him “sir” and punishes her when she tries to run away. For these reasons, I find it baffling and unappealing when he states he plans to turn her into a vampire and make her his mate, because up to that point in the novel he has done nothing romantic or loving for her that is not also self-serving in some way, to the point where I wouldn’t be surprised if we were dealing with the “vampire cannot love” trope. I don’t know why he would want to make her his equal when he seems so satisfied with having her under his thumb. The entire time I was rooting for her to escape.

A good start to this series. It leaves you with a cliff hanger that you are not expecting. The characters are interesting and go well together. The journey of Alex a alpha master vampire and his human mate Amanda will leave you wanting more. This is a new author for me and I am looking to see where the next book goes. The story is very fast paced and sometimes rushed, just wish it was a bit longer to get more on the characters story and background. Hopefully the second one will give us more answers.

Hmmm need book to really give a full review

Not bad, but did not finish. Wish the she put up more of a fight especially since she was captured. Basically it's about how vampires have taken over the world and there is a feud between two vampire clans. Along with the one clan needing to have a mate to strengthen his status. That is just part of the plot. Will finish reading when book two comes out.

This was a very pleasingly story that I didn’t know I was going to like. There was action, romance, suspense and the ever need to just hug the heroine and root for her to stay with MC. Every twist and turn was a nice surprise, the only thing I wished was for it to be a bit longer! I really wanted them to explore the mate bond. The ending was a bit abrupt, but kind of fit into the story in a good way.

A good short read and is a little different to other vampire books, would've liked it to be longer as it did feel a bit rush especially at the end, has some action, suspense and romance. Maybe book 2 will be just as good.

New story line

I enjoyed this one as it was very different but thrilling. I love the way that Amanda is written as well as Alex and Dante. I found myself thinking about it when I wasn’t reading. However, the ending!!! There could be so much more and I wanted longer, seemed rushed but I’m glad they lived. Idk about Rose though

Amanda is captured and then sold to the new head of the Diamantis clan, Alex. Vampire politics, motivation to escape and an unnerving connection will have them struggling to find a balance between their master/pet relationship and the emotions complicating everything else in their lives. This is a very steamy and intriguing story for mature readers.

Her Vampire Master mate

Brilliant book which I totally loved and would heartily recommend hoping others enjoy it as much as I did. As soon as Alex sees Amanda he wants her as his mate and the mother of his children. He's a Master Vampire and she's a beautiful virgin human woman. Can these two people be together and overcome the obstacles that they must face.

Lots of typos but I liked it. I felt like it ended way too abruptly tho. And then I signed up for the bonus chapter and it was basically just the night of her losing her virginity. I thought it would be a continuation but alas twas not. I needed more of it. I think I was prepared for a much beefier read. Finished it in like 3 hours

Much as I enjoyed it in places I'd have preferred it without the MC, but that is just my preference. I'd have liked their steamy times to be less bland as well

Surprisingly good

I started reading Sold To The Master Vampire not expecting to get very far into it. Let's face it, vampire stories are like beating a dead donkey. But this one kept me going from beginning to end. A good read I recommend to vampire genre lovers.

I hate the guy, and she's a spineless fool but the author wants me to believe she's intelligent and brave? Yeah, no. Also, the world makes no sense whatsoever. The conditions in which this society exists would be unsustainable in a short time.
